The third region is the plateau of the Bekaa valley. It lies at an altitude of
9 0 0 m e t e r s a p p r o x i m a t e l y a n d i s s i t u a t e d b e t w e e n M o u n t L e b a n o n a n d
Anti-Lebanon. It measures 8 by 12 kilometers, and it formes a part of the
G r e a t R i f t Va l l e y t h a t r u n s f r o m n o r t h e r n S y r i a i n S o u t h w e s t A s i a t o
c e n t r a l M o z a m b i q u e i n E a s t A f r i c a . T h e i m p o r t a n t a g r i c u l t u r e c e n t e r s o f
Z a h l e , C h t a u r a , Q u b E l i a s a n d B a a l b e k a r e t o b e f o u n d h e r e . A t o n e t i m e t h e
Bekaa was known as one of the reservoir of wine of the Roman Empire. Its
soil is extremely fertile and is irrigated by two of the major rivers of
Lebanon, Al-Assy (Orontes) & Al-Litani (Leontes).
