Tonight’s edition of The Robins Online
Matchday Programme was produced prior
to Good Friday’s fixture at Stoke City, so
you may notice slightly outdated stats and
league table but it remains another actionpacked
programme for you to enjoy.
Welcome to this evening’s opponents
Middlesbrough, and the fans who have
made that gruelling trip from the North East.
It’s a good opportunity for both clubs as we
look to finish as strongly as possible, while
Middlesbrough know they are competing for
a top-six finish.
Our last home game, the 1-1 draw with
Reading, was a performance which
“warranted more” in the words of Nigel
Pearson. It was great to see Tommy Conway
back on the pitch and he capped his return
with a goal - he’s now into double figures
for the season. I’m sure that will be a great
confidence booster for the young lad and I’m
sure that there are more goals to come as
he chases Nahki Wells as our top scorer.
That reminds me, voting closed last week
for the End of Season awards. These are
making a return with an evening at Ashton
Gate in May. For those who have grabbed a
ticket, I hope you are looking forward to the
occasion - it will be a wonderful night.
Omar Taylor-Clarke has enjoyed a
breakthrough year. He started against
Reading, and let’s not forget places in the
matchday squad for Harry Leeson and
Callum Wood. That’s yet more evidence of
the clear pathway between the Academy and
the first team and the opportunities these
bright, young players are given. Taylor-Clarke
is today’s cover star and therefore exclusive
interviewee, so I hope you enjoy hearing
from him.
We haven’t done particularly well in the
Easter Monday fixture in recent years. You
have to go back to 2014 when we beat
Stevenage 3-1 at home. A year later we beat
Swindon Town the day after Easter Monday,
as the fixture calendar fell, but there has
been no joy ever since.
Still, it’s a good thing football isn’t played
based on history. Speaking of which, City fan
Paul Gainey takes us back to the 1950s to
shine light on Johnny Watkins over on page
35. There’s a throwback to how the local
paper covered a 3-0 win in the Bristol derby
from 1932 and Mike Adams looks back on a
memorable fixture against Boro, courtesy of
Joe Royle, from 1977.
Enjoy all this and much more!
>4 THE ROBINS MIDDLESBROUGH

Good afternoon and welcome to this
Easter Monday fixture which sees us
take on Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet
Championship.
We extend that warm welcome to Michael
Carrick and his team as well as the
supporters who we know many will have
made quite the journey to be at Ashton
Gate for this one.
The Easter period is always busy with
this game off the back of Good Friday’s
encounter at Stoke City. Due to deadlines,
I had written these programme notes in
advance of the match, so without being
able to reflect on the score or performance,
I hope it has set us up well. If we come
away with a good points haul over this
Easter weekend then it will likely be proof
of how well we have played.
With each passing game means the end
of season is getting closer and you can be
assured that we are focusing on finishing
as best as we can because we are always
playing for something, whether that’s
points or our futures.
Middlesbrough on Monday is no easy test.
They are a side which is right up there
contesting for promotion, so we will need
the whole squad to be ready. Boro had
been one of the in-form teams prior to
defeat versus Huddersfield Town. However,
we can’t worry about them too much, the
focus is always on ourselves.
Looking back over the course of the
season, we look much better as a team.
There are still occasions where things
don’t go our way but nobody can doubt
the application from the players, who have
been incredibly committed week-in, weekout.
Another committed performance on
Monday should put us in good stead.
Speaking of the players, Kal Naismith is
now back in training and Alex Scott will
benefit from his recovery over this period,
who we hope will be back in contention
within a couple of weeks. It was great
to see Tommy Conway on the pitch and
scoring again in the draw with Reading,
following his recovery, and it’s important
we continue to manage his pitch time and
workload.
But with players coming back into the
squad, that’s key to finishing the season
positively. We want the players to feel good
about themselves as well as be fit and that
gives us an optimistic outlook in these final
few weeks where, as I say, everyone has
plenty to play for.
Enjoy the game.
Cheers,
Nige.
LOOKING BACK OVER THE
COURSE OF THE SEASON,
WE LOOK MUCH BETTER
Middlesbrough’s hunt for promotion to
the Premier League will take another
twist when they visit Ashton Gate on
Easter Monday.
Writing before they faced leaders Burnley,
Boro were locked level on points with
Luton Town (67), after a 4-2 defeat away
to Huddersfield Town, six points behind
second-placed Sheffield United.
Boro have not played in the Premier
League since relegation at the end of the
2016/17 campaign. They have finished in
the Championship play-offs once since
then, but lost to Aston Villa over two legs
under Garry Monk.
They are closing in on achieving a top-six
finish again but that loss to Huddersfield
last weekend could leave its mark. Some
would consider it a shock result against
a relegation-threatened Terriers side, yet
it goes to show what can happen against
teams with something to fight for at either
end of the table.
Playing away from home, Boro had led 1-0
at half-time, but four goals in 21 minutes
after the break saw the Terriers take
control, before Chuba Akpom’s goal on
74 minutes.
Michael Carrick was quoted by BBC
Sport: “We thought the first goal would
be important for us, and we were quite
content with the way the game had gone
and the position we were in, but we
wanted to be better in the second half.
“Then we came out and gave them the
goal, really, and then they go again and…it
was a crazy 15 minutes and that’s what’s
cost us.
“Of course we had to be better, there’s no
hiding from that. There were things we
could have done a lot better to avoid what
happened in that spell, but it’s the first
time it’s happened to us and we’ll have to
learn from it.”
That was a 14th defeat in all competitions
for the season, with the majority of losses
(10) all coming on the road.
Off the pitch, veteran midfielder Jonny
Howson recently signed a new contract,
keeping him at the club until 2024. He is
the club’s second longest-serving player
after Dael Fry and at 34 years old had
made 270 appearances, scoring six times
since he joined from Norwich City in 2017.
With 25 league goals, the forward was seven clear at the
top of the Championship scoring charts, ahead of Coventry
who had played the fewest games of the top 10 scorers,
and boasted the joint best goal conversion (37%) and shot
accuracy (67%) alongside Burnley’s Nathan Teller.
The 27-year-old is enjoying his best goalscoring season,
and has thanked his manager Michael Carrick for giving
him “freedom” to play. The former Arsenal youth player,
who has also starred for PAOK Salonika and experienced
loans across the EFL, had already scored 12 times before
Carrick’s arrival.
He scored the equaliser when we met back in November,
one month before a hat-trick v Wigan and, prior to the Good
five games - a run of six goals in all and 12 goals from 11
INTERVIEW
Omar Taylor-Cl
>14 THE ROBINS MIDDLESBROUGH

Fearless might be one word to sum up Omar ‘Rivaldo’
Taylor-Clarke.
In just a few weeks, the midfielder
will look back on a breakthrough
2022/23 season where he earned
his way into first team football and
went head-to-head against some
of the world’s football elite.
Since his first call-up in the FA Cup,
the 19-year-old has taken it all in
his stride. He went on to make
his full debut against Swansea
City in March, which Manager
Nigel Pearson described as an
“outstanding” display.
Now with seven appearances in
a Robins shirt to his name at the
time of writing, Taylor-Clarke said:
“He has helped me all the way
through,” said Taylor-Clarke. “He’s
been full of advice and kept me
going, telling me my time will
come and he’s been very good to
ensure I’ve kept working at it. In
recent seasons I saw players like
Tommy Conway and Sam Bell
being given more opportunities
so it was very clear that if you
do well then you will be given a
chance. That’s always inspired
and motivated me, and now I’m
sure there are other young players
coming through who see my name
and hopefully they will think the
same thing as well.”
I ADMIT I WAS A BIT
NERVOUS BUT WITH THE
EXPERIENCE AROUND
ME I FOUND IT EASY TO
SETTLE INTO THE GAME
arke
“It’s obviously been really good
since breaking through in January
and I can’t be happier about that. I
think I am progressing well.”
He said he owes a lot to the
Academy, which he joined at
Under-13 level and hailed club
legend Brian Tinnion for his words
of encouragement.
The teenager, who began the
season on loan at Yate Town,
made his debut in our dramatic
FA Cup Third Round victory at
Swansea City, when he came off
the bench in extra-time.
He said: “I admit I was a bit
nervous but with the experience
around me I found it easy to settle
into the game and it was great to
as strongly as possible. There’s a
good atmosphere about the place
and I’m enjoying it a lot.”
Up next are Middlesbrough
and what will likely be a stern
challenge against a side fighting
for the chance of Premier League
football next season.
Taylor-Clarke said: “It will be
difficult but we’re focusing on
finishing this season as best as
we can and that requires a winning
mentality, to get as many points
as possible and see where we can
finish. It’s a tough test but we’re
ready to compete with them.
“For me I just try to go into every
game the same; I try not to be
afraid of anything. I like to be
confident and that’s how I try to
play, whoever we go up against.”
That’s a mature outlook for a
young player who only two months
ago came on as a late substitute in
our FA Cup tie against Manchester
City.
“I’ll never forget it,” he continued.
“That was a great experience
against a top team. I remember
coming on and being close to the
players you only ever see on TV.
I’m a huge fan of Kevin de Bruyne
and he’s someone I’ve always
looked up to so to play against
him was a dream come true. He
actually apologised for fouling me.
I thought it was crazy to be honest.
“I’m massively proud of where I
have got to, so too are my family.
Goals from Liam Cullen and Olivier Ntcham gave Swansea City victory
as the Robins ended the week with a second defeat on the road.
On a day when 19-year-old Academy graduate Omar Taylor-Clarke made
his full debut and Zak Vyner captained the side for the first time, City were
on the wrong end of the scoreline and another turned-down penalty claim.
Cullen opening the scoring in the 35th minute while Ntcham got the
second in the 78th minute, leaving City heading into the international
break on the back of two away defeats but a largely successful post-World
Tommy Conway marked his return from injury with a goal as we shared
the points with Reading fresh from the March international break.
Conway had given us the lead after Nahki Wells saw an earlier goal ruled
out for offside.
However, the Royals equalised through a floated free kick as Lucas João
got his head on to the end of the set-piece.
City pushed on strongly but couldn’t force a winner with the woodwork
denying Andy King and Harry Cornick volleying inches wide.
OBITUARY
John Newton
1979-2023
The club was saddened to hear of the passing of lifelong
supporter John Newton, aged 43.
John dedicated his life to his family and Bristol City. From the
age of four, John attended the home games at Ashton Gate and
by the age of seven John became the club mascot leading the
team on to the pitch against Brentford.
John attended most away games with the Junior Reds and
became one of the ballboys for many years at home games.
When John left school, he worked full-time at Ashton Gate as a
member of the catering team. He was loved by everyone.
John’s final match attendance was at Cardiff, in March 2023.
Our thoughts are with John’s family and friends at this sad time.
featured on the 11th February should have mentioned that it originally
appeared in the City programme v. Northampton Town on the 26th March
1955.
Both teams had a goal struck off; Jackson for the Rovers
on 15 minutes and Scriven for the City almost on the
interval. Shortly after Taylor had headed into his own net,
to give the Rovers some hope, they squandered a penalty.
Jackson took the kick, but sent the spot-kick well wide.
CITY
WOMEN
News
0-1
ROBINS HPC | SUN, APR 2ND 2023 | BARCLAYS WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP
City fell to their first Robins High Performance
Centre league defeat of the season as a 25th-minute
Courtney Sweetman-Kirk goal separated them from
Sheffield United.
The Robins struggled to get into the game against the
Blades while they had to play most of the second half
with 10 players after Vicky Bruce was red-carded.
And though Grace Clinton had the ball in the net in
added time, the goal was disallowed for offside and
the league leaders could not salvage anything.
The Robins had few chances on goal, the first real one
falling in the 23rd minute when Brooke Aspin headed
Aimee Palmer’s corner wide.
Then came a sucker-punch when a Palmer free-kick
was cut out and Sheffield counter-attacked with
Sweetman-Kirk popping up at the far post to steer the
ball into net.
The Blades almost grabbed a second when they
countered from another City free-kick but Mia Enderby
shot over.
Lauren Smith made a half-time substitution, with Ella
Powell replacing Naomi Layzell, who had already been
booked for a heavy challenge.
However, things got worse when Bruce was red-carded
for a foul on Enderby in the 52nd minute while they
needed an Aspin shot-saving challenge to deny the
visitors another opportunity.
Hayles and Emily Syme came on for Jess Woolley and
Rachel Furness after 62 minutes and the changes had
the desired effect with City having more of the ball.
And they almost got the breakthrough when Gracie
Pearse hit the post with a header from Palmer’s corner
and then Clinton had the ball in the next but was
judged to be offside.
City’s last throw of the dice came in added time with
Profile
WORDS: PAUL GAINEY
An explosive left-winger
and former-England youth
player, Johnny Watkins made
his league debut for Bristol
City in particularly memorable
circumstances in 1951.
On 30th September 1953 he was
waiting to travel with the reserve
team to Southampton when he was
told that he would instead be playing
for the first team against Norwich at
Ashton Gate that afternoon.
In his earliest days at Ashton Gate
he won four England youth caps but
he had to wait until 1956/57 for this
next appearance. Thereafter he was
a regular and he played a significant
part in the famous FA Cup fifth
round game against Bristol Rovers
in February 1958 when he opened
the scoring with a rare headed goal.
He then missed a penalty just before
half-time as Rovers went on to win
4-3.
Whether swerving ungovernably
through thickets of defenders,
speeding beyond them with perfect
balance, or shooting explosively, he
was a breath-taking entertainer with
an ingrained work ethic.
As a footballer he combined craft
and graft, proving a quick-thinking
improviser with endless stamina.
His shooting was extraordinarily
explosive and his cannonball shot
reputation was enhanced on 27th
March 1959 when his shot broke the
net at Ashton Gate v Ipswich Town.
In the close season of 1959 he was
sold to Cardiff City for £2,500 but
manager Peter Doherty probably
regretted the decision as he went on
to star in the Welsh side’s Second
Division promotion side in 1959/60.
He returned to Bristol in 1961/2 and
played 23 league games for Rovers
before turning out for Bath City and
Welton Rovers to bring his career to
a close.
Still living locally, he was a clerk for
Harry Dolman’s firm, then at Rolls
Johnny
Watkins
Royce for 20 years until 1991 and
Strachan Henshaw engineers.
Watkins also managed local football
side Shirehampton and he was a fine
cricketer with Stoke Bishop CC and a
bowls player with National Smelting
Club in Bristol.
the challenges
This sensational debut for Joe
Royle was not only a personal
triumph but it also equalled our
club’s best-ever result against
Boro, which had previously been
achieved on 18th September 1909.
That was barely two months since
Louis Blériot became the first
person to fly a heavier-than-air
machine over the English Channel
or any other sea!
It was a dream start for Joe, who
scored his first with a header at
the far post from Clive Whitehead’s
cross. After some good play from
Boro, Joe scored his second, a
left-footer, following a Whitehead
corner-kick on 27 minutes. Donnie
Gillies challenged for the ball,
keeper Pat Cuff tangled with a
defender and Royle swivelled to fire
a powerful right-footer into the net.
David Mills scored to raise Boro’s
spirits just before the break. Buoyed
by this goal, Boro came out all guns
blazing after the break. Having
played his last game two months
previously, Royle was expected to
fade in the later stages but still he
managed to fashion two gilt-edged
chances for fellow striker Gillies
before scoring a disputed third goal
just before the hour mark.
With the linesman flagging for
offside as Whitehead lay injured
in an offside position near the
touchline, the referee ruled he was
not interfering with play and waved
play on. Royle was through with the
defence static and scored with a
left-footer to complete the perfect
hat-trick. The Gate was rocking but
Royle was not finished and grabbed
a fourth in the 83rd minute. Tom
Ritchie started a counter-attack
from his own half. He made ground
and played a perfect pass for Royle
to run on to and slam another leftfooter
past the hapless Cuff to send
the City faithful home in dreamland.
On a related note, Paul Stevens,
who made his first City appearance
against Boro on Saturday, April 8th
1978, returns to Ashton Gate this
Easter to mark 45 years since his
debut. He was drafted in to replace
the suspended Gerry Sweeney in
the game which Boro won 2-0 in
the North East. Paul and nine other
family members will be in the top
tier of the Lansdown Stand on
Monday.
WHAT DID YOU COLLECT
FOR THE WORLD CUP
Grandad?
CITY FAN STEVE SMITH CONTINUES
HIS LOOK AT WORLD CUP MEMORABILIA...
In a glittering career of multiple league titles and FA Cup final wins that was encapsulated in a 38-year playing
career, Roy of the Rovers failed to land soccer’s biggest prize…the World Cup.
Melchester Rovers’ star player, Roy Race, accomplished many things since appearing in the first edition of Tiger
comic on Sept 11 1954: 10 League titles; 11 FA Cup wins; three European Cup victories; scored a record 481
goals and won 42 England caps, scoring nine goals. And yet, even in his fictional world, the blonde bombshell
failed to emulate Bobby Moore and lift the World Cup.
It wasn’t for the lack of trying though, but maybe it was fate that brought about a run of badly-timed injuries
that curtailed any success with
England, unlike his magnificent
domestic career, and in 2014,
the legendary centre-forward put
the record straight in Roy – The
Official Autobiography of Roy of
the Rovers.
“First of all, I turned on my ankle
stepping backwards on to the
jack in a post-season charity
bowls match and missed out
on the 1966 World Cup. When a
groin strain kept me out of the
1970 World Cup in Mexico, family
history seemed to be repeating
itself. (It was a groin strain that
put my dad on the side-lines
during WWII).
“England didn’t qualify for either
the 1974 or 1978 tournaments, so
Roy Race, captured in his England playing kit from Italia 90 from the Robert Harrop figurine
collection (2003). Behind him is the 2010 World Cup Special of reprinted stories, while a
collection of 100 postcards celebrating 60 years is waiting to be opened.
>40 THE ROBINS MIDDLESBROUGH

the fact that I sprained a wrist at the start of the summer of ’74 and did a metatarsal in May 1978 is, ultimately,
irrelevant.”
There was, however, more bad news to follow as Roy was ruled out of the 1982 trip to Spain because of an
ingrowing toenail “…which was just typical of the niggling misfortune that tended to dog me on the international
scene.”
By the time of the 1986 finals in Mexico, Roy was apparently too much of a gamble for the England selectors as
his flamboyant style of play made him a scapegoat for any international defeat. And by 1990, even though he
thought he could be of some use as an impact substitution, to use today’s terminology, by coming off the bench
and offer something different, he was again overlooked.
In book form, Roy of the Rovers appeared on the front cover of his 1958 annual right up to 1975, where
following a two-year hiatus, he reappeared in his very own self-named publication as the Tiger logo is now
removed from the spine, the last of which was in 1994.
The debut appearance of the Roy of the Rovers
annual in 1958 (left) and a more modern definition for the 65th
anniversary publication (2019).
Hat-trick of fact and fiction, from the left: bringing Roy to life (Pitch, 2016);
from the man himself (Century, 2014) and a more in-depth look behind the
scenes of a football icon.
From figurines, postcards, stamps and several reprints of
his best and sometimes dramatic exploits; including five
kidnappings, a helicopter crash and a failed assassination
attempt, the name of Roy Race lives on. It’s a pity that “World
Cup winner” was never added to that list.
Roy became England player/manger in 1974/75 and on 18th
February 1978 came his greatest achievement by beating Holland
5-0 at Wembley.
