Phillips wrote: ‘SURVIVAL OF
THE FITTEST…At the beginning
of this year we looked at
the fixture programme of
matches to be played during
the final run-in of the season
and we prophesied a really
exciting finish as we were to
play promotion contenders
Aston Villa, Blackpool, Luton
Town and Fulham at this
ground in the closing weeks.
In the event, of course, most
of our promotion opponents
have failed to stay the course.
Blackpool and Fulham “blew
up” last Saturday and today’s
visitors, Luton Town, finally
abandoned their promotion
ambitions for this season
when they surprisingly lost 0-4
at Hull City on Tuesday. (It’s
still mathematically possible
for Luton to go up, however
– but they would have to
score over 40 goals in their
last five matches to do so!)…
it is apparent that the only
remaining danger to our own
promotion hopes comes from
Aston Villa and Sunderland.
Let’s hope the issue is settled
before the final game at Roker
Park on 9th May – or 10,000 of
us will be spending the night in
Sunderland!’
