OUR HEAD COACH SETS THE
SCENE FOR TODAY’S GAME...
Never mind every goal and every point –
we’ll be scrapping for every header, every
tackle and every loose ball. That’s the
mindset I want and the players showed it in their
performance at West Brom on Monday.
We had a big meeting the day after the 2-0 defeat
to Preston, where we talked about a reset of
our mental values and what we need to pull us
through. The boys all spoke up at the meeting and
I’m proud of them for being brave and speaking
up at a time when a lot of people might have gone
missing. Then they backed it up at West Brom –
and that 2-2 draw really did feel like a win. I said to
the boys after the game that it wasn’t the point
itself as much as the nature of how we got it.
People might think they can have a piece of QPR
and we’ve probably been written off by everyone –
bookmakers, fans around the Championship – but
we looked like we were going to prove them wrong
and that’s really important. I was really pleased
with the reaction the boys showed after going two
down.
One of those who was quite vocal in the meeting
was Lyndon Dykes and he backed it up with his
effort and performance alongside Chris Martin up
top. Lyndon’s work-rate and application is what
makes him a top Championship striker – there are
not many in this division who chase so many lost
causes and run as hard as he does and we’re very
pleased to have him. Both he and Chris are going
to cause problems for any defence and it was
great to see them both on the scoresheet. If the
goal Chris scored might have looked fortunate,
it was still a brilliant moment for us. I think it was
Gary Player who said ‘the harder I work, the luckier
I get’ and there’s no truer example of that than
Chris closing down their goalkeeper and forcing
him into that mistake.
Points away from home are always welcome, but
they become even more important if you can win
your home fixtures and that’s our target in what’ll
be a tough game today against Coventry. Mark
Robins is a manager who should be commended
for the understated job he’s done. I’m lucky
enough to know how it feels taking a side from
League Two to the Championship – but the way
Mark has done that, got Coventry to survive in
this division and then become a real contender
is something to aspire to. It also shows it doesn’t
take incredible money and resources to compete
in the Championship if you have hard work and
good organisation. Mark and his assistant Adi
Viveash are prime examples of that and the
Coventry board should also be commended for
keeping them in charge for so long – they’ve been
able to build and put their stamp on the club.
Well done to everyone who took part in the walk
to raise funds for our Tiger Cubs team today.
This initiative was just starting when I was a
player at QPR and Andy Evans and his team at
the Community Trust deserve a huge amount
of credit – the longevity of the Tiger Cubs is
absolutely brilliant. I was privileged to host the
Tiger Cubs recently after training and meet a few
of the people who run the team as well. It really
does put into perspective what life’s about and the
smiles on those kids’ faces are fantastic to see,
especially when they’re wearing QPR shirts!
Finally, I want to say again – our fans are vital to
what we want to achieve. We need the crowd
to get behind the boys, we need support and
togetherness to get out of the situation we’re in
and I can’t wait to see the smiles on everyone’s
faces when this is achieved.
Let’s get this place rocking!
John’s first QPR match
was in 1958 and he
remained a member and
season ticket holder in
the Loft Upper until he
developed a rare form of
dementia.
A true gentleman and
Rangers fan, John loved
KEITH FRIEND
(13th May 1949 – 13th
February 2023)
Our sincere condolences
to the family and friends of
Keith, who is fondly
remembered as a
personable and
inspirational chairman of
the QPR Supporters’ Club.
Born in Putney, Keith came
from a solidly Chelseasupporting
family, but
chose to support QPR,
then in Division Three. He
joined QPR straight from
school and initially worked
as an assistant to
Commercial manager Tony
Ingham in the pools
department. In 1975 Keith
became Supporters’ Club
chairman, based in the old
club shop hut on South
Africa Road. With his
characteristically dynamic
and innovative leadership,
Keith made great progress
from 1975 to 1977,
mirroring the success of
our greatest-ever team in
that period. He pioneered
the Supporters’ Club trips
into Europe for QPR’s
inaugural UEFA Cup
campaign of 1976/77,
reinstated the Player of the
Year Dance with a lavish
event at Hammersmith
Palais, and also set up the
highly-successful QPR
Supporters’ Club football
team. RIP Keith.
GEORGE
Welcome to the QPR
family, George
O’Brien – one of our
newest fans, born on
Friday 3rd February 2023.
A MESSAGE
FROM THE EFL
• As we approach the
season finale, people
must respect that the
pitch is for players and
stands for spectators
• It is against the law to
enter the pitch at any
time and anyone who
does so will face a ban
and police action
• Recent pitch invasions
have brought football
bans, police prosecution
and criminal records -
this can impact
employment, education
and international travel
• Everybody should feel
safe at football but pitch
invasions endanger
everyone because it’s
impossible to tell the
difference between
celebration and an attack
• Entering the pitch
could also result in
penalties for the club, so
do not spoil it for the
team or other fans
• From fans, to stewards
to players, we all have a
role to play in keeping
each other safe on
matchdays
• We need to protect
each other, the club and
the game
LINDSEY HILL
In loving memory of
lifelong QPR fan Lindsey
Hill, who sadly passed on
Saturday 28th January at
the age of 40.
Lindsey, who lived in
Coventry with her
husband Ricky, helped to
run the Planet QPR
Facebook group and was
adored by everyone that
interacted with her. She
was a loving wife, a loving
step-mum to son George,
and was truly loved by her
family and hundreds of
friends.
May Lindsey rest in peace.
| SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP | MONDAY 10 APRIL 2023
WEST BROM
QPR
THE HAWTHORNS | ATT: 23,969 | HT SCORE: 2-1 | REFEREE: M DONOHUE
2
GOALS from Lyndon Dykes
and Chris Martin crowned a
stirring fightback by Rangers
to secure a valuable point after
going two down early on at The
Hawthorns.
West Brom opened the scoring
in the 10th minute when John
Swift’s free-kick was turned in
by Brandon Asante-Thomas
and Semi Ajayi made it 2-0 four
minutes later, stabbing in from
close range after Seny Dieng
had parried Swift’s attempt.
But the R’s reduced the deficit
midway through the first half
when Ilias Chair delivered an
inviting cross for Dykes to guide
his header across Baggies
goalkeeper Josh Griffiths and
into the far corner.
It was all square four minutes
after the restart when Martin
put Griffiths under pressure
and the keeper’s clearance
rebounded off him into the net.
Rangers might even have
completed the turnaround
late on as substitutes Taylor
Richards and Andre Dozzell both
directed efforts fractionally wide
of the far post.
Community DAY
Women’s Football
CELEBRATING GROWTH
OF THE WOMEN’S GAME
Throughout the last
12 months, QPR in the
Community Trust worked
tirelessly to ensure girls and
young women have had the
opportunity to be involved
in football in their local
community.
As a result, over 900 female
participants have taken
part in a range of weekly
programmes, including both
our Kicks and Changemakers
projects which are supported
by the Premier League and
London Marathon Charitable
Trust. Meanwhile, our younger
age groups have been
attending our popular FA
Wildcats and Squad sessions.
As a Community Trust
we have continued to
support and deliver multiple
tournaments and school
festivals across west London,
with over 60 primary and
secondary schools taking part
throughout 2022/23.
EUROPEAN WOMEN’S
CHAMPIONSHIP 2022
Our most recent tournament
took place just a stone’s
throw away from our very
own Loftus Road, with
the European Women’s
Championship helping to
inspire a generation of
budding female stars.
Prior to the tournament,
students were able to meet
our QPR FC Women’s team
and pose for photos with the
trophy that the triumphant
Lionesses – including west
Londoner and QPR fan
Chloe Kelly – would lift just
a few weeks later. As the
tournament kicked off around
the country, our very own
Wildcats were chosen as
player mascots for the group
game between Germany and
Denmark at the Brentford
Community Stadium.
In addition, 10-year-old
Savannah, a member of
QPR FC Girls’ Under-12 team,
was picked to be the matchball
deliverer at the same
game, playing her part in an
historic event for female sport
in this country.
PREMIER LEAGUE KICKS
The PLCF Kicks programme
is moving into its 16th
year and remains QPR’s
largest stand-alone female
programme, having engaged
just over 650 participants this
year alone. As a Community
Trust we have focused
particularly on the London
boroughs of Hammersmith
& Fulham and Brent this year,
as we felt there were gaps in
provision. We are thrilled to
see some of the participants
progressing into our
competitive female teams.
QPR FC WOMEN & GIRLS
QPR FC Women and QPR Girls’
competitive sides continue to
go from strength to strength,
while our Under-10s will be
competing in mixed football
once again this season as we
aim to keep strengthening our
female pathway.
From the start of the 2022/23
campaign, we are delighted to
announce that all our female
age groups are back within
the QPR Trust bracket, as we
continue to offer opportunity
and strive for excellence.
Of course, we are proud to
continue our connection with
Lionesses’ match-winner
Chloe Kelly, a graduate of the
QPR FC Girls programme who
returned to Loftus Road to
celebrate her England success.
QPR COLLEGE ACADEMY
During the 2021/22 academic
year, we introduced our
very own QPR College
Academy Women’s team – a
programme for post-16
students who train and play
alongside their education.
We are pleased that students
from our Academy have
followed the pathway into
both the QPR FC Women’s
first and reserve teams – with
several making a number of
appearances for both sides.
Two of our students have
progressed even further,
having recently signed for
FA Women’s Super League
academies. Jessica Francis-
Weir and Harriet Stiles-
Winfield have joined West Ham
United Women and Tottenham
Women respectively – a feat
of which our College Academy
are immensely proud.
The Trust run a post-16
football and education
programme for girls and
boys, with the players earning
educational qualifications
while playing games and
representing QPR. Players
can study for A-Levels or
a BTEC while training and
playing games in competitive
leagues, and many have gone
on to join professional and
semi-professional clubs. The
programme is delivered at
Rectory Park, home of the
Middlesex FA.
Throughout the college
academy season, both girls
performed impressively in the
league and cup, with Jessica
scoring 11 goals in 10 games
for the R’s and Harriet notching
four goals and 12 assists in
six games. As a result of their
impressive performances,
several WSL clubs kept the pair
on their watch lists.
“In the past year, I’ve really
enjoyed being at the QPR
College Academy,” said
Jessica. “The coaches have
been supportive in my football
and educational development,
and I’ve made some great
friends during my time here.
“I’d like to thank Ram and all
the coaches at QPR, and I look
forward to my next challenge.”
QPR’s College Academy host
boys’ and girls’ trials throughout
the year. The College Academy
has become a key part of our
female pathway, with several
students taking their coaching
badges while they are studying
with us, enabling them to
support our younger girls’
Wildcats sessions.
COME AND JOIN US!
Our female programmes
don’t stop there – the
philosophy across the Trust
is to inspire and create
opportunities and as such we
have some exciting projects
and partnerships coming up
in the next few months.
The excitement generated
by the Women’s European
Championships last summer
has helped girls and women to
be more widely represented
in sport and hopefully that will
fuel their drive to continue
participating in whatever
form they like.
There’s no better time to get
involved in the excitement of
female football – so what are
you waiting for?
Community DAY
H&F Foodbank
PROVIDING FOOD FOR
THOUGHT AT CHRISTMAS
Ahead of our Championship
clash with Burnley in
December, members of QPR’s
first-team squad took it upon
themselves to support our
local foodbank.
That followed the EFL’s
launch of the ‘Together –
Supporting Communities’
campaign, through which
clubs provide community
services and matchday offers
to help people in challenging
economic times. The scheme
also contributed towards
the Government’s ‘Help for
Households’ initiative.
QPR worked closely with
Hammersmith & Fulham
Foodbank and conducted a
matchday collection for the
organisation in our Fan Zone
ahead of the Burnley game,
with the squad playing their
part by donating a host of
non-perishable items to help
the local community over the
festive period.
Club captain Stefan Johansen
said: “As footballers, we know
we are in a very fortunate
position but we are also fully
aware of the challenges so
many people in the country
are facing right now.
“It is important we understand
this. QPR has a fantastic
reputation as a family and
community club, and it didn’t
surprise me when I heard the
club have a close relationship
with our local foodbank.
“The squad have brought in
donations for Hammersmith &
Fulham Foodbank and we hope
this can be of benefit to the
people who need it most.”
If you would like to support our
foodbank collection, you can
do so ahead of any game in
W12 between now and the end
of the season by bringing your
non-perishable donations to
the Academia Fan Zone.
Non-perishable donations
(foods that have a long
shelf life and do not require
refrigeration) include:
• Long-life/UHT juice & milk
• Tinned meat – corned beef,
chicken, mince, meat pies
(no pork)
• Tinned vegetables
• Tinned fish
• Tinned fruit
• Sponge puddings
• Coffee
Community DAY
Youth Justice Service
WORKING TO STEER
YOUNG PEOPLE AWAY
FROM CRIME
QPR in the Community Trust
have worked closely with
partners at Hammersmith &
Fulham Youth Justice Service
to help develop and support
young people through the
Prevent & Prosper project.
The Trust’s close relationship
with the borough’s YJS was
highlighted as a specific
strength when the latter were
commended for ‘outstanding’
services in a recent report
by HMIP (His Majesty’s
Inspectorate of Probation).
H&F, who were only the
second London YJS to
achieve that feat, provide a
range of services to help and
support young people and
their families, with the aim of
keeping them away from crime
and anti- social behaviour.
Following the assessment,
Alison Sabaroche, head of the
borough’s YJS and her team
were invited to a celebration
event at Loftus Road to
recognise their achievement.
The Trust’s youth and
communities’ manager
Michael Nyarko said: “It has
been a pleasure working
closely with Alison and the
rest of the Hammersmith and
Fulham team.
“Working with her staff and the
youth and communities’ team,
I feel the award reflects the
amazing work which is being
delivered together.”
Community DAY
Rainbow Rangers
TAKING PRIDE IN
RAINBOW RANGERS’
DRIVE FOR CHANGE
QPR in the Community Trust
were proud to once again help
shine a light on the positive
work of our official LGBT+
supporters’ group, Rainbow
Rangers, during February.
Not only was February
the dedicated month of
action for the Football v
Homophobia (FvH) initiative,
it also marked LGBT+ History
Month – a chance to reflect
on and celebrate pioneers
past and present who have
helped people from LGBT+
communities on the road
to equality.
While significant progress
has been made, football-wide
there is plenty of work yet to
be done to completely stamp
out homophobic behaviour
from the game. Campaigns
such as FvH are key in bringing
awareness to the issues, but
education is also essential
in making football a safe and
welcoming place for everyone.
As well as showing our support
for the FvH campaign at all
three of QPR’s home fixtures
in February – with R’s boss
Gareth Ainsworth sporting a
Rainbow Rangers pin badge
for his first game in charge
against Blackburn Rovers – we
were delighted to welcome
members of Rainbow Rangers
to our Heston training
ground, where they delivered
awareness workshops to staff
and players alike.
The group also interviewed
QPR director of football Les
Ferdinand on the subject of
inclusion in the sport.
“Conversations have come
a long way,” said Ferdinand.
“Twenty years ago, we weren’t
talking about matters such
as LGBT rights. When I was
a young player, racism and
homophobia was much more
prevalent in football.
“The fact that conversations
are now taking place can only
be positive – but it’s about more
than that. It’s about actions.
“We want to make football, and
QPR specifically, a safe and
welcoming place for everybody.
We’ll do anything we can to
achieve that and we’ll always
welcome education about what
we can do as a football club to
be fully inclusive.”
Rainbow Rangers chair Richard
Young said: “As a supporters’
group, a lot of our focus is on
the experience in the stadium,
so it was invaluable to also be
able to talk directly to coaches
and players about what LGBT+
inclusion looks like on the pitch
and at the training ground.
“Our sessions are based around
sharing facts and experiences
– diverse experiences that
people may not have thought
about before.
“The support and engagement
we’ve received from the Trust
and club all season long has
been exceptional.
Words are cheap, but the
actions of QPR show that this
really is a club committed to
making football a game for
everyone.”
If you want to get involved
with Rainbow Rangers, either
as an LGBT+ fan or an ally,
you can find the group on
Twitter @qprainbowranger
and Instagram @
qprrainbowrangers.
There are regular pre-match
socials and attendance to
matches together, as well
as working with the club on
campaigns like this one.
Everyone is welcome
As part of today’s
Community Day, we
have a number of
partners supporting
the activities taking
place at the Academia
Fan Zone.
The Fan Zone is open
at every weekend
12pm and 2.30pm,
with a range of FREE
BACK OF THE BOX OFFICE
MOST QPR fans will have visited
the front counter of our box
office on South Africa Road.
However, an active workspace
is hidden away from the public
at the back. There is a large
office where members of the
ticketing team operate during
the week.
They deal with both in-person
and telephone sales for match
tickets, season tickets and
There is also a kitchenette and
a separate office for Jenny
Elliott, who has been the box
25 years.
SINTON
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
G
ood afternoon everyone and welcome back
to Loftus Road for today’s Championship
match against an in-form Coventry City.
Coventry are having another very good season,
sitting just three points outside the top six as
I write these notes and have lost just once in
their last 12 matches. They also came out on
top against us back in November and it is fair to
say Mark Robins has done an outstanding job
at Coventry. We know we are in for a very tough
encounter at Loftus Road this afternoon and
go into the game knowing exactly where we are
and what we have to do in terms of our league
position and needing points.
Over the Easter weekend, we had two very
contrasting performances against Preston North
End and West Brom. In the Preston game, where
we lost 2-0, we did not do anywhere near enough
to get anything, although at 0-0 we did have a
great chance to take the lead. We conceded two
goals in quick succession in the second half and
I felt Preston were good value for their win on
the day. The defeat continued our really poor run
of form and results and left us in real trouble in
terms of relegation.
We then travelled up to West Brom on Monday
looking for a better performance and a muchneeded
result. West Brom were on a good run of
form at home and, when we found ourselves 2-0
down after 14 minutes, you could be forgiven for
fearing the worst. However, I felt the response
from the team was really good. We got ourselves
back in the game quite quickly with an excellent
header from Lyndon Dykes and, like everyone
watching, I sensed we could get something from
the game. We equalised with a bit of fortune
for Chris Martin, which was a reward for closing
down and putting the opposition under pressure.
I said at the time it might not be the best goal
Chris has scored during his career, but it might
prove to be one of the most important goals he
has scored – especially for QPR.
Having got back on level terms, we kept
pressing and looking to win the game and came
really close to finding a winner on a couple of
occasions.
I felt it was a huge point on Monday, especially
from where we were in the game and in terms
of where we are in the league. Coming back
from 2-0 to get a point will and should give
everyone a lift, as well as the much-improved
performance as a team. Yes, it was only a point,
but in a strange way it felt more than that. We
must now look to back that up with another
good performance that will hopefully get us
three valuable points today. That will not be easy
and we will have to earn what we get but, as I
have already said, we know where we are and
exactly what we have to do. In the remaining five
games there will be twists and turns but we are
22 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

hoops
in control of where we end up and that is very
important. We have to perform and get points
– that is the position in which we find ourselves
and we have to meet the challenges that lie
ahead full on.
At the Preston game, we welcomed back to
Loftus Road many of the playing squad and
coaching staff from the 1992/93 season – the
first Premier League season where we finished
fifth in the table and London’s top-ranked
club. It was great to see so many of that group
back together and I know from speaking with
everyone in attendance how much they enjoyed
the day back here at QPR. As I have said many
times, this was a special group both on and
off the pitch and seeing each other again only
cemented that view many years later. What a
team – it really was.
By the time today’s game kicks off, myself and
many other participants will have completed
the Tiger Feet 13 walk – all in the aid of the QPR
Tiger Cubs, a football team for children and
young people with Down’s syndrome. The Tiger
Cubs project aims to create a multi-tier learning
environment that will improve participants’
overall physical, social and emotional health. All
the money raised goes directly to the team to
OFFICIALQPRFC // @OFFICIALQPR // @QPR // WWW.QPR.CO.UK
cover the expenses associated with the project
and to assist with extending opportunities in the
future.
It really is such a wonderful project, always
tremendously supported by our fans and I am
always very proud to do the walk and back the
event as best I can. This year, we are taking in a
bit of QPR history as we all walk the sites where
QPR have previously played their home games
over the years. It promises to be another great
event and once again thank you to everyone who
supports Tiger Feet for your generosity towards
such a good cause.
I keep saying how incredible your support for the
team has been at both home and away games
throughout the season. Every QPR fan knows
the situation we find ourselves in and the team
need you more than ever today and during the
remaining games that lie ahead.
Let us all get behind Gareth, his staff and his
players today and roar them on to three vital
points.
Enjoy the game and...
COME ON YOU R’s
OPPOSING VIEW
MARK SMITH (PICTURED RIGHT), WHO HOSTS THE SKY BLUE FANS TV PODCAST,
PROVIDES US WITH THE LOWDOWN ON COVENTRY CITY’S SEASON SO FAR…
First of all, Mark, can you
tell us a bit about the
podcast?
We do two shows a week,
at 7.30pm on a Thursday
and Sunday on our
social media channels,
previewing the match with
opposition fans and then
reviewing it on the Sunday.
How do you view
Coventry’s season so far?
After a rocky start on and
off the field, things have
changed drastically with
(new majority owner)
Doug King really doing a
superb job – and we are on
the cusp of the play-offs!
Who would be your player
of the season?
It’s a toss-up between
Viktor Gyokeres and Gus
Hamer for me, but Viktor’s
goals, assists and allround
play has helped us
get to where we are.
Can Mark Robins take the
Sky Blues to the Premier
League?
Yes! He has instilled a
winning mentality and
galvanised the club and the
fans back him all the way!
How has our former
player Jake Bidwell been
performing?
He’s started all but a
handful of matches and
has been a steady, reliable
performer playing as a
wing-back this season.
More accustomed to
playing a conventional
left-back or as a leftsided
centre-half, he has
performed admirably.
What are your best and
worst memories of
previous visits to Loftus
Road?
There haven’t been many
wins in previous seasons.
The stand-out game was
in 2007, when we won 2-1
through a 90th-minute goal
by Kevin Kyle. Our worst
performance was back in
1993, when we lost 5-1.
Recent results at Loftus
Road haven’t improved but
we can get a result today!
The Gaffer
Former Manchester
United, Norwich and
Leicester striker Mark
Robins has masterminded
two promotions and reestablished
the Sky Blues as
a Championship club since
returning for a second stint in
the dugout six years ago.
Robins, who hung up his boots
in 2005 to become assistant
manager at Rotherham,
another of his previous clubs,
succeeded Alan Knill in the top
job two years later and moulded
the Millers into League One
promotion challengers.
Barnsley appointed him as
manager early in the 2009/10
campaign but, having lifted
the Tykes away from the
Championship danger zone,
he quit and spent more than a
year out of management.
Robins’ first spell as Coventry
boss, during the 2012/13
season, lasted just five months
before he joined Huddersfield
and repeated his achievement
with Barnsley by securing the
Terriers’ second–tier status.
An unsuccessful 15-month
spell with Scunthorpe
followed before the Sky Blues
reappointed Robins in 2017 and
he guided them to EFL Trophy
success, followed by victory in
the League Two play-off final a
year later and promotion back
to the Championship in 2020.
Danger Man
There were still nine games
of the campaign left to
play when the Sky Blues’
prolific Swedish striker Viktor
Gyokeres overtook his tally of
17 Championship goals from
last season.
Gyokeres, who started his career
in the youth team at Stockholm
club Brommapojkarna and
made his senior debut at the
age of 17, netted 25 goals in 67
appearances during the next
two years.
Brighton snapped up the
youngster during the January
2018 transfer window and he
made his first-team debut
in the Carabao Cup before
joining German second-tier
side St Pauli on loan during the
2019/20 season.
Having registered seven goals
in 28 games, Gyokeres was
loaned out again the following
season, initially spending three
months at Swansea and then
Coventry, where he found the
net three times.
His performances were enough
to persuade the Sky Blues to
make the deal permanent in
the summer of 2021 and the
striker’s form in front of goal
quickly earned him a call-up to
his national team, the first of
13 to date.
QUEENS PARK RANGERS 4
COVENTRY CITY 1
SATURDAY 6TH MARCH 1976
FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
A COMPREHENSIVE performance enabled titlechasing
Rangers to extend their unbeaten run to
seven games.
Dave Thomas gave the R’s the lead on six minutes
when he smashed into the net following a delightful
clipped pass by Republic of Ireland international
striker Don Givens.
Stan Bowles put Gerry Francis in the clear for the
second goal on 61. Although the England captain’s
initial shot was blocked, he was alert enough to nod in
the rebound from close range.
With 71 minutes played, another defence-splitting
ball by Bowles picked out Thomas on the left wing and
his cross enabled Givens to hammer home first time.
Two minutes later, Don Masson hit number four –
nipping in to convert after David Webb shot against
the upright.
Barry Powell scored a consolation half-volley for midtable
Coventry in the 82nd minute. However, the Sky
Blues were second best overall.
This result sent QPR to the top of the league – two
points clear of previous leaders Liverpool, who lost
2-0 at home to Middlesbrough that afternoon.
Denis Compton wrote in the Sunday Express
newspaper: “QPR, London’s pride and joy, today stand
clear at the top of the First Division. And it was an
inspired performance from Stan Bowles which helped
put them there. Bowles turned on a second-half display
of artistry which left Coventry’s defence in tatters.
“His footwork and distribution led to two of the goals
that could bring the League title to Loftus Road.
Honours also go to England captain Gerry Francis,
whose electrifying runs up the middle added to
Coventry’s confusion, and the consistently good
goalkeeping of Phil Parkes.”
RANGERS: Parkes, Clement, Gillard, Hollins,
McLintock, Webb, Thomas, Francis, Masson, Bowles,
Givens. Sub not used: Leach.
INTERVIEW: TONY INCENZO
IT’S NOW 30 YEARS SINCE ONE OF
THE BIGGEST SHAKE-UPS IN ENGLISH
FOOTBALL – THE LAUNCH OF THE
As founder members of the new breakaway division,
LES, the first season of the Premier
League was 30 years ago now –
does it only seem like yesterday?
It certainly does! Although I was only
talking to someone about this the other
day when it was mentioned that QPR
were top London club. We had a good,
competitive team in those days.
There was plenty of publicity at the
time, but did anyone realise how big
the Premier League was going to
become?
No, although there was a lot of
razzmatazz and hullabaloo. If you
remember, there were pyrotechnics,
fireworks and dancing girls before kickoff
when we played in the first Monday
night live TV game away to Manchester
City. That was something we hadn’t
seen before. We were thinking: “How
long is this going to last?” To me, it was
business as usual. We had been in the
old Division One so the league just had
a different name to it and you were still
playing against the same players. But 30
years later it has now turned into what
we are witnessing today, one of the
most watched products in the world.
You mentioned our opening fixture
at Manchester City. QPR manager
Gerry Francis didn’t want to play the
match as it meant we would face three
fixtures in five days, do you remember
that?
I remember it well. Why was it us?
Because we were one of the smaller
clubs and they were experimenting
Ferdinand was
season, finding
was unfair as we had to play three times
in quick succession. In the end, Andy
Sinton’s screamer got us the point we
deserved in a 1-1 draw.
Looking back to 30 years ago, QPR
could compete with the very best
teams in the country…
Definitely, anyone coming down to
play at Loftus Road realised they were
going to have a hard match. Even the
top teams, the Manchester Uniteds, the
Liverpools – it was never a comfortable
outing for them. We had a group of
footballers at Rangers who – to a man –
were good on the ball and we knew how
to win games. I was fortunate with the
wingers that I had supplying crosses,
Andy Sinton on one side and Andrew
Impey on the other. Then Ray Wilkins
in the middle of the park controlled
everything.
You have also touched on the fact that
we finished as top London club, which
was a meaningful milestone in the
1990s…
Yes, when you think about the teams
that were in the division at the time
Remarkably,
Ferdinand
registered two
1992/93,
following his
Nottingham
Forest with
another at
Goodison Park
two days later
Chelsea. I always think it is tough for
London clubs to do well in the Premier
League because there are so many
local derbies which are always very
competitive.
It was your first big season in the QPR
first team and you scored 20 Premier
League goals. Gerry Francis instilled a
lot of faith in you, didn’t he?
Gerry came into the club 12 months
before that and the timing was perfect
for me. I’d previously had periods of
being in and out of the team under
former managers Jim Smith and Don
Howe. Jim and Don helped me on my
way and I told their families that recently
when both men were posthumously
inducted into the Forever R’s. But the big
turning point personally was when Gerry
took over as boss. He was methodical
and put time and work in with me. In
fact, Gerry placed an arm around my
shoulder and said: “Look, you are going
to be my main striker, no matter what
going forward. I believe in you – I feel you
can play for England.” And at the time, I
was thinking: “I’m not even really playing
for QPR!” So England was a very distant
thought in my head, to be honest with
you.
You spent the whole of the previous
summer in your dad’s gym building up
your muscle strength. How important
was that preparation for you?
I’d had a problem with the ligaments in
one of my knees. A doctor said to me it
hoops
Above: the
former
was because my ligaments hadn’t grown
in the way they should have done, so I
ended up going into the gym with my
dad. It was the first time I had ever done
it. Back then, my dad did bodybuilding as
a hobby, so he oversaw some bits and
pieces with me to make sure that my leg
strength was where it needed to be to
sustain my ligaments.
Of your 20 goals, six came over the
Easter weekend when you scored two
hat-tricks against Nottingham Forest
at home and away to Everton, games
we won 4-3 and 5-3 respectively…
I remember those matches like they
were yesterday. They were some of the
highlights of that season for Rangers as
they were such ding-dong games. We
were in a rich vein of form at the time
and playing some really good football.
When you are winning games, it brings
confidence and we were confident in
the ability of our team-mates. The
other lads were creating opportunities
for me and luckily I was taking those
chances. Yet when I think about football
nowadays, if I scored a hat-trick on a
Saturday then the likelihood is I would
be sitting on the bench on the Monday
because they rotate everything. But
back then, we didn’t really have the
option to rotate players as much as we
wanted to.
Did you keep the two match balls from
those games?
Yes, I have still got them both. I never
gave them away.
In the event, of course, most
HEROES
DON GIVENS VS DERBY COUNTY
SATURDAY 1ST FEBRUARY 1975
FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
IRISH striker Don Givens was in scintillating
form to net a fine hat-trick in this 4-1 win
against Derby County at Loftus Road.
The Rams forged ahead by virtue of a Bruce Rioch
goal after just three minutes, but Givens equalised
six minutes later when his cross-shot from the
left deflected in off Derby defender David Nish.
44 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

hoops
With 10 minutes to go, Givens struck again with
a fierce volley into the roof of the net as Derby’s
defenders appealed for offside.
Dave Thomas made it 3-1 to Rangers before
Givens completed his hat-trick in the 89th
minute by touching home following a great run
by Stan Bowles on the right-hand side.
In his Sunday Times match report, Brian James
wrote: “Givens, who took three of the goals, having
harassed Derby into conceding one of them, will
attract praise for the most obvious contribution.”
A master in the air and fleet-footed on the ground,
Limerick-born Givens originally moved to QPR
from Luton Town for £40,000 in July 1972. He went
on to make 294 appearances in a hooped shirt
and hit the net 101 times. Another 19 goals were
registered in his 56 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
Looking back on his time at QPR, Givens said:
“That was the most enjoyable spell of my playing
career. The attitude of our team was to attack,
we only ever thought about hitting the back of
the net.
“I feel lucky and privileged to have played under
R’s manager Dave Sexton. He was exceptional as
a coach and ahead of his time.
“After we had played on a Saturday, Dave
would fly over to Holland or Germany on a
Sunday to watch matches at places like Ajax or
Mönchengladbach. Then he would bring ideas
back that we would work on in training on the
Monday at QPR, so those tactics that he had
seen abroad would be put into our game.
“I remember many English managers went over
to World Cups and things like that, but I don’t
think there was anyone at that time who did what
Dave did with watching European club matches.
Therefore I would say he was the best person I
ever worked with.”
SAM TAYLOR
‘R’ GENERATION WRITER SAM TAYLOR
DISCUSSES THE LATEST GOINGS-ON IN W12
In my short 21 years coming to Loftus Road
I don’t think I’ve witnessed anything quite
like this.
It’s bizarre what you remember and what you
don’t from your early years on this planet
because I don’t remember learning to read
or write, family holidays or playdates. When
I think back to the earlier years of my life, I
simply remember Martin Rowlands.
Whether I was living out my Sunday League
fantasies vicariously through him or simply
was drawn to the man at the heart of the
action, Rowlands was always my favourite
player. Fourteen is a number that remains
special for me. In my final years playing
Sunday League, as all great strikers do toward
the closing stages of their careers, I reverted
back to midfield and was sure to take up the
14 as my squad number that year.
In what was a relatively blissful upbringing, my
Dad would probably identify one of the few
major aggravations in my childhood as the
struggle to dress me in hoops. I was set on
supporting Arsenal like my schoolmates and
my siblings had all pretty much discredited
football as a source of pleasure the minute
they left their first QPR match. But in the
great puzzle of getting me to board the blue
and white train, Rowlands was certainly a
corner piece.
There was something about Rowlands that
really brought me around. I think it was the
passion. He was a player who very clearly
cared an awful lot about what he was doing
each week. I’m sure he was brilliant, but
reflecting back now I don’t actually remember
how capable he was as a footballer. I
remember him scoring a screamer at some
point against Watford and I remember him
wearing that yellow nPower Football League
captain’s armband each week but, other than
that, my image of Rowlands is all about the
passion he played with.
It was really amazing to see someone care
so much about their job. In my school, the
best you might find would be some mildly
passionate introvert blissfully resigned to an
inevitable route to accountancy. So seeing
Martin go out each week and play Scunthorpe
as if his life depended on it really brought the
club to life.
Of course, it wasn’t just him. I’ve seen
countless players don the hoops in the last
two decades willing to die for this club. The
other most prevalent fighter in my (and I’m
sure your) recollection was, of course, Gareth
Ainsworth. It’s an attribute that is priceless in
this profession, adding a level of ferocity that
perhaps doesn’t transcend technical ability
but most certainly elevates it.
I feel this elusive internal fire is something
lacking in this current crop. It’s crucial to
success at this level and the lack of it is
deafening in recent performances. Gareth
has that fire somewhere and I truly hope
he can find a way to strike his match, ignite
a flame in this squad and light a pathway to
safety.
What are your strengths as a player and what
do you need to work on?
My strengths, I’d say, are my long-range passing
and slide tackles and aggression to win the
ball. But I need to work on my heading in terms
of distance and height and earlier decisionmaking.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Either signing my professional contract at QPR
or making my senior debut in men’s football for
Dulwich.
What are the differences between playing for
Dulwich and the QPR B team?
The difference I noticed straight away
was how the manager spoke to all of us – there
was no filter in what he said and especially
during the match as well. At QPR the philosophy
is to play as much football as we can and,
if you make a mistake, it’s not as bad. But,
if you make a mistake at Dulwich, you could
cost the team three points, the manager his
job and the team their position in the table as
well. So you really have to always be on it, no
matter what, as players in the league are very
experienced and it’s very demanding physically
and mentally.
Who’s had the greatest influence on your
career and why?
(Brentford youth coach) Kevin Lema. I wouldn’t
be the person I am today if it wasn’t for him and
wouldn’t have had the opportunities I have now.
He always stuck with me through the toughest
times and always kept me level-headed at the
best times to keep going and make me better
as a person.
Who’s your favourite player or inspiration?
Ronaldo would be my inspiration, but
my position idol would have to be Virgil van Dijk.
When was the first football match you
attended?
An FA Cup match, Brentford v Chelsea at Griffin
QPR MEMBER AND SEASON TICKET HOLDER PAUL FARRELLY
DECIDED TO HAVE A ROOT THROUGH HIS PROGRAMME
COLLECTION AFTER RECEIVING THE 1982 FA CUP FINAL
COMMEMORATIVE PRESENTATION PACK LAST YEAR.
Delving into his collection,
Paul located his original
copies of the programmes –
and match tickets – for both
the Wembley final and replay
against Tottenham, more
than 40 years on.
That completed the perfect
presentation box for Paul,
who sits in the Loft Upper,
and also jogged his personal
memories of the day Division
Two side Rangers went toe to
toe with the FA Cup holders
and lived to fight another day.
“On the day itself I had
to work a half day for my
Saturday job at Woolworth’s
in the Bush, so I missed the
march to Wembley,” said Paul.
“Later I jumped on a train and
it was me among thousands
of Spurs fans. I felt very
conspicuous and a bit
nervous the whole way.”
Do you own a piece
of interesting
or unusual QPR
memorabilia? If so,
CHESHAM UTD LADIES 1
QPR FC WOMEN 2
LATE goals from Chloe Gunn and Frankie
Webster completed a turnaround as Rangers
fought back to take all three points at The
Meadow.
Following a scoreless first half, Mathilde Belouu
put Chesham ahead just before the hour mark.
However, the R’s kept pressing for an equaliser
and gained their reward when substitute Gunn
levelled with three minutes remaining.
But there was still time for Rangers’ summer
signing Webster to score again right at the death
and secure victory.
Chesham will have an immediate opportunity to
take their revenge on Sunday when they travel
to the Powerday Stadium for the return fixture,
kick-off 2pm.
TONY’S TALES
I
WAS surprised and humbled when an
old friend approached 10 minutes before
kick-off at the recent Watford home
game and said: “I’ve got something for
you to commemorate your 50 years of
supporting the R’s!”
It is a beautiful ‘QPR 50’ wooden plinth
hand-crafted by football fan John Walker.
I am absolutely delighted with it!
This is a huge milestone for me, to be
concluding my 50th season of devotedly
watching Queens Park Rangers – a real
rollercoaster ride. In all of my time going
to Loftus Road, we have won no national
trophies.
But I don’t care about that. I am just so
proud to support my local team from where I
grew up in London NW11.
QPR carry out fantastic work in the
surrounding community, I’ve made lifelong
friends and I feel part of a big family. Three
of my favourite past R’s players came to my
wedding – Gerry Francis, Kevin Gallen and
Rufus Brevett.
I wouldn’t change anything about my
half-century as a QPR fan. I believe you
should support your football club through
thick and thin.
You will win some games and lose some
games, but true supporters stay loyal no
matter how bad things become. I think
back to the gut-wrenching feeling of total
devastation when we lost at home to nonleague
minnows Vauxhall Motors in an FA
Cup replay 21 years ago. By far the worst
night of my life.
But my mantra is to stick with it and one
day you might get your reward when your
beloved team scores a last-minute winner at
Wembley Stadium.
I did when Bobby Zamora blasted into
the net right in front of me to clinch
promotion for QPR in the 2014
Championship play-off final.
My utter elation at that precise moment
cannot be described!
Media Voice
JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER AIDAN MAGEE
PENS HIS LATEST COLUMN
That performance from the
14th minute onwards at The
Hawthorns was exactly what
I needed after a wretched
Easter.
I fell seriously ill the day before
the Preston game with a
condition known as DKA – a
diabetes-related illness which
saw excess acid form inside
my body.
My blood sugar level was high
off the chart, I couldn’t eat
for nearly three days and my
weight plummeted by nearly a
stone in 36 hours.
I was still in intensive care as I
listened for updates on events
from Loftus Road and, while
the news on my own condition
was encouraging – sadly,
QPR’s result was anything but.
I was discharged on the
Saturday night and was able to
spend Easter Sunday at home
with family.
The following day, I really did
fear the worst early on as
West Brom swung a flurry of
balls into our box confident
that every time they did so,
they’d cause mayhem and
probably score.
For the players to raise their
game to such an extent
immediately after such a poor
run – and from 2-0 down –
took plenty of courage.
A point was an excellent
result and something to build
on. I’m pleased to say that,
after a real scare, I’m back to
full fitness and will be at the
Coventry game today.
Talking of which, QPR fans are
embarking on their annual 10-
mile walk from Loftus Road
to raise funds for the QPR
Tiger Cubs – a football team
for children and young people
with Down’s syndrome.
You may have seen on socials
that I’m selling a bespoke QPR
5ft x 6ft print (pictured) and
donating the proceeds to the
Tiger Cubs.
I have placed a reserve price
of £75.00. If you or anyone
else wants it, you can place
an offer to me via Facebook
or Twitter before midnight
tomorrow, 16th April. I will
cover UK postage.
Good luck to all our
#TigerFeet13 walkers today.
