PARADISE FOUND

WITH ITS RUGGED, gently rolling
landscape and pristine whitesand
beaches, Sumba, which
is only a one-hour hop from
Bali, is nothing like the rest of
Indonesia’s dramatic volcanic
islands. An almost forgotten
isle, life here is slow, the
bucolic countryside dotted
with rural hilltop villages and
more buffalo wander the roads
than cars. For years, NIHI
(nihi.com), a much-loved
resort, anchored the island
as the go-to destination for
discerning travelers seeking
serenity and world-class
surfing. But now, surrounded
by miles of untamed beach on
the island’s western shores,
the much-anticipated Cap
Karoso (capkaroso.com) will
shake things up with 67 slick
rooms and villas, a spa, and
a seven-acre biological farm
that will keep the resort’s
three restaurants and two
bars stocked with organic
ingredients.
Moving westward along
Indonesia’s archipelago, the
island of Lombok, an original
surfer’s paradise is also upping
its game with the arrival of
Innit (innithotels.com), an
intimate property with just
seven beach houses, that
seamlessly blend into the
local architectural landscape,
and a restaurant that serves
fresh seafood caught by
local fishermen. Over in Bali,
the Capella Hotel Group’s
design-focused lifestyle
brand, Patina (patinahotels.
com), will open the doors
of its second outpost in the
island’s lush Ubud region
with a collection of cascading
buildings on the banks of the
sacred Wos River. Also along a
river, but in Bhutan, &Beyond
will launch Punakha River
Lodge (andbeyond.com).
