CAPITAL GAINS
From top: A balcony of a suite
Oriental Mayfair, London.
designed by the legendary
Richard Rogers. Located in
Knightsbridge, the 60-room
property will be outfitted
by a roll call of prestigious
designers—including
Alexandra Champalimaud,
André Fu, Pierre Yves
Rochon, Rémi Tessier, and
Patricia Urquiola—and will
be home to a restaurant by
Jean-Georges Vongerichten
and a subterranean spa and
pool. Elsewhere, the city’s
prominence has been raised
a notch further with the debut
of some exciting luxury brands
from The Peninsula (peninsula.
com) to Raffles (raffles.com).
The former is perched in prime
location on Hyde Park Corner
in the heart of Belgravia.
Designed by British firm
Hopkins Architects, the 190-
room newly built hotel takes
luxury to the next level with a
host of exciting collaborations
that includes interiors by
architect Peter Marino, staff
uniforms by fashion designer
Jenny Packham, a bespoke
fragrance for the hotel’s inroom
bath products by Timothy
Han, and a rooftop restaurant
overseen by Michelin-starred
chef Claude Bosi. The muchanticipated
Raffles at The
OWO will also finally open its
doors. A project many years
in the making, the 120-room
hotel occupies the landmark
Grade II* listed former Old War
Office on Whitehall. Alongside
85 Raffles branded residences,
there will be no less than 12
restaurants and bars and a
sprawling spa with an indoor
pool. Another new international
brand to debut in the city, Six
Senses (sixsenses.com) will
launch in the former Whiteleys
department store in Bayswater
with 110 rooms and 14
branded residences alongside
a host of facilities including, of
course, an expansive wellness
offering. Soho, meanwhile,
will welcome Broadwick
Soho (broadwicksoho.com),
an eclectic residential-style
57-room bolthole designed
by Martin Brudnizki to also
include a cosy Sicilian-inspired
restaurant and a wraparound
rooftop bar and terrace. Over
in Mayfair, Mandarin Oriental
(mandarinoriental.com) will
open its second outpost in the
city on Hanover Square with
50 rooms and 80 residences—
the most exclusive private
homes in the city—which will
all have access to the hotel’s
facilities including a fitness and
wellness centre and an indoor
pool. Also in Mayfair, 1 Hotels
(1hotels.com) will debut its UK
flagship property overlooking
Green Park. Featuring 181
rooms, the hotel’s sustainability
ethos will weave its way
throughout, from its design that
uses natural materials from the
British Isles, to a restaurant
helmed by Michelin-star chef
Tom Sellers, which will use
seasonal and locally sourced
organic ingredients.
ITALIAN ICONS
Home to some of the world’s
most incredible architecture
and works of art, not to
mention its gastronomy, it’s no
surprise that Italy is a bucketlist
European destination,
with millions of tourists
visiting each year. Boosting
the country’s already thriving
hotel scene—which includes
icons such as Il San Pietro
di Positano, Lake Como’s
