PROFILE: COVER PHOTOGRAPHERCinzia CanneriDocumenting Women’s Bodies asBattlefieldBy Daniela CohenBorn in Italy, Cinzia Canneri startedphotography at a young age, but her20-year career as a psychologist in ahospital and raising her two daughtersprevented her from continuing. Yet photographystayed in her mind and heart, and onceher daughters were older, Canneri resumedher art, becoming a photojournalist.Her first project, “Like two wings,” in2016 documented the effects of asbestos onworkers and their families, who she said,“breathe the dust of asbestos in the housebecause of the clothes of their husbands….”Published in the New York Times Lens Blog,this work won two awards.Canneri then decided to use her privilegeto highlight social issues in places previouslycolonized by her country. This, togetherwith her desire to understand why mostEritrean refugees arriving in Italy were men,led her to travel to the border betweenEthiopia and Eritrea in 2017. Initially, shedocumented women fleeing Eritrea, whichshe called “the second worst dictatorshipafter North Korea.” Canneri named theirimmigration experience “the still journey,”explaining that women’s journeys can lastup to 20 years or even a lifetime becausethey decide to remain in Africa, often at theborder, because they have children and arewaiting for their husbands.Following the invasion of Tigray by theEthiopian federal army supported by theEritrean military forces and Amhara militiain November 2020, Canneri expanded herfocus to include Tigrinya women, documentingthe sexual violence perpetratedby the Eritrean army against both Eritreanand Tigrinya women escaping to Sudan orAddis Ababa.“Sexual violence was used againstEritrean women because they escapedthat country, against Tigrinya womenbecause they wanted to exterminate them,”Canneri said. “Systematic targeting ofwomen’s bodies has come to light as beinga strategy during war.”She said that sexual violence is alsoprevalent in peace time, because of thepaternalistic culture women are living in.There is “cultural acceptance of this violenceagainst women’s bodies because theyare vulnerable, because they cannot speakout for themselves,” said Canneri.Canneri’s work is a way to give thesewomen a voice. “Even though words arenot spoken, … there’s such a strength ofvoice about what is taking place for thesewomen in a time of war, a time of peace,yet both are so violent,” she said. “Whenwe’re looking at the Eritrean womenand also the Tigrinya women, there is nodivision between ‘our women’ and ‘theirwomen’. They are women and … sex isbeing used as a tool to punish.”For Canneri, it is important to alsodocument these women’s strength, as theyraise their children in this context and supporteach other across ethnicities. In one ofher photos, Eritrean and Tigrinya womenare seen praying together for their children.In the cover photo for this issue ofZEKE, a woman who recently arrived atUm Rakuba refugee camp in Sudan withher two children holds a religious pendantfrom her husband left behind, tellingCanneri, “It is the only object I have of mypast life.”Canneri wants to raise awareness thattrue peace needs to go beyond politicalagreements to respect human rights, withthe first step recognizing the victims andthe sexual violence using women’s bodiesas a battlefield.ZEKESUBSCRIBE TODAY!WWW.ZEKEMAGAZINE.COM
