Sometimes in CAMRA we take time out from campaigning to enjoy social events and days out. This is where I come in. I’m Dave Rutter, and I think I have the best job on the committee because it’s my job to organise all the fun events. Of course Christmas was a very busy time. Amongst the multitude of events going on we had our traditional branch Christmas trip which this year was to the Lymestone brewery at Stone in Staffordshire. Arriving rather earlier than expected in Stone we just had time for a “swift one” in the Royal Exchange (a Titanic house) before proceeding to the brewery. The Brewery is housed in an industrial unit which is part of what once used to be Montgomery Brewery. It was then taken over in 1902 by Bents and remained a brewery until it was closed by Bass Charrington in the 1970’s. Lymestone Brewery, set up by former Titanic brewer Ian Bradford and his wife, Viv, took residence there in 2008. Ian told us about which malts he uses and even passed round some for us to try. If you’ve 14 Yes, I really CAN organise one Social Scene never tried them, they taste a bit like Horlicks. Ian also has three beehives on the roof, the honey from which is used in some of his beers. Ian had put on a couple of his beers for us to imbibe during the course of our visit. Unfortunately (!) they were Stone the Crows and Einstein which are both over 5%. While both are very nice indeed, some of us were defi nitely feeling the effects after an afternoon session on them! At least I was presented with a certifi cate at the end of our visit proving that I can, indeed, organise a p*** up in a brewery after all! The evening session in Stone - at the Star and the Swan - are, as you can no doubt appreciate, very hazy memories after such an enjoyable afternoon. In February we held a skittles match against Heart of Staffs branch at the Swan Hotel at Brewood. After a couple of cheeky ones in the bar downstairs for those of us who arrived in time, we moved upstairs to the skittle alley where battle commenced. Our neighbours took a slight lead after the fi rst round and then consolidated their lead after round two to thirteen points. Time for a break and to enjoy the buffet. The skittles teams at Brewood The sustenance gave our team a lift in the third and fi nal round where we managed a spirited fi ghtback. However, it was not to be and our friends from Stafford pipped us to the
post by just three points. Still, the result was unimportant. It was a very enjoyable afternoon out and it is always a pleasure to get together on such occasions with our friends from our neighbouring branches. At the regional awards ceremony held on 27th December at the Drop Forge in Birmingham BEERWOLF picked up another award, having been adjudged fi nalist in the West Midlands Newsletter of the year 2011. As the new editor of BEERWOLF I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to John Dearnaley our outgoing editor. I am just beginning to realise how much hard work, dedication and sleepless nights are required to put such a publication together. I would personally like to thank John for his invaluable help and advice during the production of this, my fi rst issue.I have also learned that it does not happen without the help and support of other people who contribute articles and photos. Also, it would not be possible without our advertisers whose support we acknowledge. John gets married soon to Jo Keeley the regional secretary. Congratulations and best wishes to you both. Ed.
