gentleman rather than “this bloke”?
Whilst my experience might be perfectly
acceptable in a run down pub full of 18 year
olds in baseball caps this pub, worryingly, was
not like that at all.
My second question, therefore, is this. Is this
an isolated case or is this an extreme example
of a trend?
If this is part of a trend then are we as
CAMRA members and campaigners for the
preservation of the public house wasting our
time?
Is it no wonder that people are staying away
from pubs when those pubs are staffed by
people who don’t seem to have even basic
good manners, let alone basic product
knowledge? How can we persuade people to
return to their local when they are likely to be
served by someone with such poor customer
service skills?
Answers on a postcard please.
Binge drinking and the law
Dear Editor,
It was always my belief that it was a condition
of a landlord’s licence that he should not serve
alcohol to anyone who is inebriated. Indeed,
we all remember the idealised old fashioned
image of the pub landlord saying to a customer
“come on son, time for bed - you’ve had
enough”. So why, therefore, do we see images
of towns and cities throughout the country full
of ambulances on a Saturday night looking
after people who have drunk themselves to a
point of requiring hospital treatment?
I myself was in a pub recently where one
young “adult” was wandering around the pub,
Beer wolf Spring 2012
not only making himself look foolish but also
annoying all the other customers in the pub.
Even his mates were embarrased and asked
him repeatedly to shut up and sit down. And
yet the bar staff continued to serve
him - several times - with strong lager and
“chasers”. So why is this allowed to happen?
Are times so hard that landlords need the
business THAT much, or has greed taken
over from old fashioned values and the legal
requirement to “keep an orderly house”?
