A Message from Jessi Shapiro
I’m sure you’ve noticed, as I have, the sense of community and friendship that pervades our social hall
each week following Shabbat services. Regulars plan their Saturdays knowing that they will eat lunch at
shul. Newcomers, and those who attend Shabbat services less frequently, have been pleasantly surprised
to find a full buffet lunch waiting for them after mussaf.
No matter whether lunch is poke bowls, plant-based “meat” tacos, pizza, or the old standby of egg salad
and tuna salad, camaraderie is the common ingredient. Each week, many linger over lunch, even when a
lunch and learn isn’t planned. I hear folks catching up on the doings of each other’s families, discussing
upcoming vacations and events, and even comparing notes on the sermon.
I know indoor communal dining is not for everyone; many of us are still taking care to limit our exposure
to COVID and other germs. As good weather returns, I expect the joys of Shabbat lunch together to spill
out onto the Sukkah patio where more of us may feel at ease gathering to eat.
Wherever and however we gather, the companionship is priceless. But it is not without cost. Lunch
expenditures—which include Laura’s time preparing and serving it, paper goods, and the ever-rising cost
of actual ingredients—average about $1,000.
We’ve had a number of weeks since July 2022 when lunch was generously sponsored by a family, a
group of congregants (such as for Birthday Shabbat), or a committee. A recent instance is the April 22
Shabbat to which Board members generously donated in celebration of Rabbi Roland’s 40 th birthday.
Thank you to the Board members and all our sponsors this year!
The synagogue’s budget accounts for lunches on some weeks without sponsorship, but these work out to
fewer than half the Shabbatot. So, if you’ve enjoyed lunch after services, if you like being able to plan on
tuna with extra mayo and a side of great conversation with friends, consider paying it forward and
sponsoring an upcoming kiddush.
Martha can walk you through the details and help you pick the best date to sponsor. Don’t let the cost I
mentioned above scare you; any contribution toward lunch is much appreciated and will be
acknowledged. Your generosity will be recognized in the announcements from the bima, with signage at
the buffet, and in the weekly email and tochnit.
If you need a reason, lunches are often sponsored by families in honor of milestone birthdays,
anniversaries, or yahrtzeits or career events like graduations, retirements, promotions, publications —
the list goes on. But your reason might be more lighthearted, such as honoring beloved pets, thanking
the community for support, or celebrating your favorite season.
Whatever reasons you and our fellow congregants choose for
sponsoring future kiddushim, let me be the first to thank you for
making these lunches possible. I look forward to enjoying a bagel
and conversation with you soon.
A Message from Martha Sivertson, Executive Director
Growing up in suburban New Jersey, there were always enough kids my age to play in various
backyards down, or across the street. We would ride our bikes, occasionally, to get to a ball field
or ice cream shop but, otherwise, walking did us just fine. As the spring has sprung here in
Cleveland, however, I see hundreds of people out on their bikes for exercise, for errands, or just
for nothing. I am reminded of my New Jersey family’s tradition of buying bikes as a rite of passage.
My parents had a vision for each of my siblings that, by age ten, we would pretty much be on our
own to explore the neighborhood and beyond. At birth, a $25.00 US Bond was purchased so that
we would cash it in and buy a bicycle…though I am not sure $25 would even buy a handlebar or
bell nowadays. Even then, it was nothing fancy but that investment for my parents was the first
true possession for which I became totally responsible.
I pampered that bike the first summer with washing and waxing. I would avoid the rain and
puddles and any other perceived hazard. If a scratch did happen, it was quickly buffed out. I
would not let anyone borrow it and carefully carried it onto my enclosed front porch before dark.
If my parents would have let me, I would have carried it all the way up to my room.
The next summer, cooler than cool Alice Morano came to town…
My age, but attending a private school, Alice put the “tom” in tomboy. Her father owned a
business that supplied pizzas to Shea Stadium where my team, the New York Mets, played. Did I
mention how cool she was? Her favorite activity was to ride her bike very fast and then skid into a
pile of leaves. To add to the thrill, she would get an ice cream cone, skid into the leaves and yell,
“save the food!” As I remember, the both of us skinned our knees repeatedly but never broke a
bone…or lost an ice cream. It is really the only summer I remember before High School.
My story does not say anything new. Playing it safe with my bike in my 10th year demonstrated
that I was responsible and thankful. Taking risks in my 11th year may have shown some
irresponsibility but even my parents smiled to know I was having the time of my life…. well, at age
11, that is.
Happy Spring, everyone. Get outside. Ride your bike. Avoid piles of leaves no matter how much
they beckon!
A Message from Rabbi Scott Roland
My dear friends,
As you receive this month’s Gateways, we are somewhere near the halfway mark between
celebrating our Pesach redemption and our Shavuot revelation. (Cue this Jersey boy singing,
“Ohhhhhhhh, we’re halfway there. Ohhhhhhhh, counting the Omer!)
This Omer period, which begins on the second day of Passover and ends with
Shavuot, is a time of reflection and preparation. It is a time to connect with the spiritual
journey of our ancestors as they traveled from slavery to freedom and from Egypt to
Mount Sinai.
Of course, biblically, Shavuot is a celebration of the wheat harvest. It was
when our ancestors turned their wheat into bread. You may remember
that the Mishnah (Avot 3:17) compares bread to Torah. During the Omer
we mature and grow. Torah was given as the wheat is harvested to remind
us that both are necessary for our nourishment and survival.
The counting of the Omer is not only a reminder of this journey and our
ultimate needs. It also serves as a time for us to engage in personal
growth and spiritual refinement. Our mystical tradition teaches us that
each day of the Omer represents a different aspect of the Divine, the reflection of which we should work
on improving within ourselves. By counting the Omer and reflecting on these traits, we can strive to
become better versions of ourselves. Therefore, Shavuot becomes the culmination of this journey of
reflection and growth.
This underappreciated time in our calendar is ripe with opportunities for connection. It provides us with
an opportunity to engage in meaningful reflection and introspection. As we count the Omer and reflect on
our journey towards personal growth, we are reminded of the importance of paying attention to both our
physical and spiritual needs. We must remember that just as bread sustains our bodies, Torah sustains
our souls. By striving to improve ourselves each day and connect with the Divine, we can continue to
grow and flourish both individually and as a community. As we approach Shavuot, may we be inspired by
the journey of our ancestors and continue to embrace the paths they cleared for us.
I hope to see you all at our Community Tikkun Leyl Shavuot on May 25 th !
Tzedek Task Force Update
All who are hungry, let them come and eat.
All who are in need, let them come celebrate Passover with us."
At your Seder, how did your family give meaning to the phrase above? While you may not have
literally invited the needy to your Seder, you can now follow through on a commitment to address food
insecurity, in collaboration with the Tzedakah task force.
In the weeks ahead, we will be talking about some of the causes of food insecurity, and learning
how members of our kehilla can help relieve hunger locally, nationally and internationally. We’ll also
share information about related initiatives, such as reducing food waste. We are encouraging groups of
congregants to volunteer at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, one of its distribution centers or the
Kosher Food Pantry and individuals to become Hunger Network Food Rescuers.
Sisterhood has committed to staff the food packing work at the Kosher Food Pantry on the
morning of June 11. Please contact Irit Rawraway (216-856-5555) if you want to be
part of that event, or another Sisterhood volunteer group. And we ask
everyone to watch the weekly emails for notices about learning and volunteering
opportunities, including a few than can be done with children.
Together, we can make a difference!
Our Ohio Historical Marker has been installed!
Please join us at 9am on Sunday, May 28 as we officially
unveil this meaningful piece of our CST history.
SO WHAT IS THIS ADULT SWIM?
The name was coined as a playful reference to the fact that Adult Swim programs are, by default,
attended by adults only. If you are an empty-nester/never-nester/baby-boomer/baby-boomer-plus-a
-few-years or just a plain adult, then you are welcome to join CST’s Adult Swim.
Our Shabbat Supper Club is the first of our initiatives; we look forward to creating more
opportunities to socialize, learn and grow together. If you would like to get involved in planning
activities or have ideas of what you would like to see happen, please contact
Wine and chocolate Social (April, 1 st 2023)
Cozy tables with black tables cloths atop, dimmed lights, flickering candle lights and soft jazz music (as soon
as Shabbat ended) in the background were the backdrop to our wonderful Wine and Chocolate Event.
Six types of chocolate truffles, and a respectful variety of other chocolates and treats, would have made any
chocolate lover happy. The wine tasting experience was led by husband, Rene, who acted as our “Wine
Steward.” From white to red wines, simpler to more layered and complex flavors were the focal point of the
evening. Yet, the social interaction of those who attended lingered and topped the multi flavored event.
I hope you will join our casual Jazz club ‘‘like’’ evening next time, and judge for yourself! Thank you to Rene,
and thank you to Gail and Doug Fox, the advisory committee.
Deep Muscle Relaxation (DMR) with Janice Steirn
Have you ever felt stressed out by work, family, plans, trips or a “simple” upcoming Passover Seder at your
house? I didn’t think I was really stressed out, when I entered the Beit Tefilla, where Janice Steirn led the
“Deep Muscle Relaxation” session. But boy, as Janice walked us through certain steps, and by end of her
magical session, my body and mind were free. THANK YOU JANICE for the April session! Would I do it again?
Absolutely, and you might want to try it too!
Upcoming class: Tuesday, May 16 11- noon (Tentative date )
In Honor of Mother’s Day
As a daughter of a 97 year old Mom, it feels like Mother’s Day every day when I hear mom’s voice and
when she seems excited to hear my voice as well. Even when she complains about this or that, it is such
a gift for both of us! I’m simply grateful for the small things we can still do together. Mom lives in Israel,
but at this very moment, Rene’ and I are staying in an apartment in my mom’s building to maximize our
time together.
Yesterday was Yom Hashoah. The meaningful ceremony on her floor, touched me more than usual and
brought me to tears while my mom was stoic and strong, as always. Everyone in the room wore white
shirts and black pants, as is a traditional here on certain holidays. Mom and I don’t look anything alike;
but yesterday, our matching shirts and perhaps the hugs and hand holding gave it away.
I sat next to my mom who is quite small in size, but a giant in experiences. During the
ceremony mom stayed strong and stoic, while I gently kept wiping my eyes, trying not to
let her see me. Before lighting the sixth and final candle in memory of the 6 million
Jews who perished in the Shoah, my Mom shared a personal note in honor of those
who survived. Her revenge, as was for many other survivors, was to live, create a family
and help build the country of Israel. I was invited to stand by mom as a witness to her
success. More tears!
Mom and I didn’t see eye to eye till my 50’s. The part of her life she held back from me,
her incredible inner strength and the wall she created that had saved her, also blocked
her relationships. Opening up in my presence in our home few years back, seems to
have unlocked the barrier she was holding back and the key to the incredible bond
between us. Was it the standing by my mom, being the live evidence of her success to live and multiply,
that brought tears? Was it her age and the dread of the limited time we have together?
For now, I am grateful for every opportunity we have together, and I wish for us all to appreciate and
cherish every moment we get to experience or recall those precious times with our moms!
Let us celebrate Mother’s Day often!!
Nancy and Adam Levin of Beachwood are thrilled to
Rebecca Lauren to Mark Gerald Lenz of Evanston,
