President Ed Kneitel - Annual Meeting Speech
Jessi – you succeeded Josh Gordon two short years ago, and I had the privilege of watching you dive
headlong into your new role. During your tenure, you dedicated yourself to the success of our shul, led us
through challenging issues, all while working through COVID restrictions, planning Benjamin’s bar
mitzvah, and focusing on your personal health needs. You powered through in-person and zoom
meetings, and honestly hardly missed a beat. You have been a great leader, certainly during the most
challenging of times. You simply never stop, or at least you don’t let on when you do.
You have been an amazing friend and mentor to me during the past 2 years. You made time for 1-on-1
conversations, copied me on way to too many e-mails, and showed everyone on our board how to lead in
a calm, planful and deliberate way. Thank you for continuing Shaarey Tikvah’s legacy of exemplary
presidential leadership and thank you, in advance, for your ongoing support of our board and our shul.
Please come up and accept this token of our appreciation. Congratulations on your soon-to-be new role
as Shaarey Tikvah past president!
Speaking of our past leadership, I want to take a moment and remember those who served as president
of Shaarey Tikvah as noted in our monthly bulletin as ‘of blessed memory’, all of whom I had the pleasure
and honor of knowing – Henry Marsh, Oscar Stadtler, Henry Gruen and Alan Leff. They, along with all
other past presidents, have set an example of leadership and personal commitment, and I am honored
to follow in the footsteps of such strong leaders.
I had the privilege last Sunday (May 28) to watch the dedication of our congregation’s Ohio historical
marker. It’s remarkable to think that here we are today, the result of a group of Jewish German immigrants
who met and prayed above the Tasty Shop. Our history is now memorialized at the top of the
driveway, to share our story with all who pass by. Thank you so much, Martha, for finding and following
through with this initiative, and to the Wertheim and Schubach families for supporting the installation
and beautification of the marker.
I very much respect Shaarey Tikvah’s history, given that my family and I are both a part and the product
of our past.
My wife Jan and I joined Shaarey Tikvah 31 years ago, when our children Matt & Allie were 5 and 3 years
old. We wanted a shul that was welcoming to our family (hint…children), and CST offered that
opportunity. Although there were few young families with young children here at the time, we took the
chance and it certainly paid off.
Jan and I quickly became integrated in Shaarey Tikvah life. We promoted CST to our Agnon friends, and
we watched as over the years more families, more young families, joined our growing congregation. Jan
became a Sunday school teacher, and over the years was Sisterhood co-president, and served on the
education, nominating, Shabbaton and strategic planning committees. I served on the board and as
treasurer for many years, and have since served on rabbinic search, cantorial search, worship, finance
and High Holy Day honors committees. I was once a not-so-youthful CST USY advisor, and sang (or
pretended to sing) in the High Holy Day choir. I am most familiar to everyone in my Shabbat morning role
on the bima as gabbi sheni, having assumed these duties from Henry Marsh of blessed memory. I am a
frequent Shabbat shaliach tzibur, less frequent Torah and haftarah reader and, thanks to Barry Mintzer,
have been a b’nai mitzvah tutor for over 20 years. Our children were active in Kadima and USY, looked
up to the older kids, made lifelong friends and now even come back to shul every so often.
President Ed Kneitel - Annual Meeting Speech continued…
This shul became, and still is, the center of our Jewish and social life. We have celebrated milestone
events here, and were surrounded by your love when we needed emotional support. CST has become our
sacred community, a place where we enjoy the company of our longtime friends, create new friendships,
and watch as the next generation grows up and thrives here. Ours is not a unique story, as many of you
followed or are following a similar path of participation and leadership and, looking back, I doubt we all
would have done things any differently.
Our shul thrives on active congregational engagement, in prayer, study, auxiliaries, task forces and board
leadership. Our membership helps to create programs that bring us together in prayer, song, learning,
relationships and of course, meals. I am thankful that so many of you, including our most recent members,
support our shul in this way, as this is the essence of who we are as an active, participatory
congregation. I want to highlight some recent events that make us so unique.
We recently welcomed close to 50 people to our 2 nd ‘Adult Swim’ dinner and program, coordinated by
Wendy Sattin, Nancy Zimmerman, Arielle Cohen, and Amy Einhorn as a way to target engagement of congregants
in the loosely defined ‘empty nester’ demographic. We look forward to future events and hope
that more congregants will join in the globetrotting culinary fun.
Led by Rachel Hutt, Sharon Fagin and Luisa Aviv, the racial inclusion task force has trained 50 people
during multiple training sessions. The mission of this task force is to ensure that CST is, as these sessions
are advertised, ‘a place of unquestioned and true inclusion and belonging for congregants, visitors, family
and friends who are people of color’. Please consider joining one of the next cohorts.
Our YP Etc. group, led by Holly Sukol, has created fun programming to engage our young leaders, as well
as those young at heart. What better way to end Pesach than with a late-night pizza party!
Rabbi Roland has continued to offer opportunities for Jewish study, including Midweek Mishnah and
Shabbat afternoon seudot here at shul. Please consider attending future sessions.
Our Shabbaton, coordinated by Erin Stone-Tompkins, Karla Anhalt and Holly Sukol, was very well attended
and featured internet sensation and Roland family friend, Miriam Anzovin. Her teaching style was fun and
engaging, and because of her visit I now have an Instagram account. You’re as young as you feel.
Our auxiliaries continue to be very active, with Men’s Club BBQ, bourbon tasting and interesting speakers,
to Sisterhood game nights, havdallah programs at congregants’ homes, and knife skills classes which I
could have used a month ago before I sliced my finger instead of an onion.
These are just some examples, which I highlight for two reasons. First, it is a tremendous amount of work
to even create a concept, then form a committee, plan, advertise, engage the synagogue office and,
ultimately, have a successful event. This doesn’t happen by chance…it literally takes a village. Second,
these examples remind us that even though we always strive for more and even better synagogue
programming, we already work very hard to have active membership engagement, people do want to be a
part of the experiences we create, that attract new members, and allow us to stand out as a unique option
in the Cleveland Jewish community. We should, and sometimes must, be reminded to celebrate our
successes.
President Ed Kneitel - Annual Meeting Speech continued…
Some of our most impactful moments come from participation in Shabbat, Holiday and High Holy Day
services. Our Shabbat services are participatory and lay-led by an ever-expanding group of shlichai
tzibur. Some in this group have been studying together to find more meaning in our davening
experience, and introduce new niggunim to spiritually engage the congregation. Our congregants read
Torah, now including pre-b’nai mitzvah, chant haftarah and deliver d’vrei torah. Our monthly Pesukai
Café ensures an early minyan, with pastries, drinks, and abbreviated Shabbat morning prayers. Our
Sundown Shabbat outdoor services and picnic dinners are always well attended, and attract prospective
members. Cantor Laura Berman will once again join us for the High Holy Days, and our choir will
continue to include a mix of congregant and professional voices.
Over the next 2 years, your board will re-re-review our strategic plan, to ensure our focus on key areas
such as membership recruitment and retention, worship, and fundraising to maintain our long-term
financial stability. We will continue our emphasis on security, while following the lead of the Jewish
Federation of Cleveland and our security committee chaired by Gil Rubanenko, and continue to recruit
security ushers and greeters for Shabbat services. We will respect our similarities and differences, and
strive for CST to be an inviting safe space for all.
I am excited to continue working on these and other initiatives with our board in the coming years. I am
also happy to announce that our future leadership is secure through 2027 as Isaac Kirstein has agreed
to succeed me as president in 2025. Isaac has made significant contributions as a board and executive
committee member over the past 6 years. I thank him, not only for this future commitment, but also for
his ongoing friendship and support.
I am also happy to announce that Janice Steirn and Gail Fox have accepted 1-year presidential
appointments to the board, and we look forward to their participation in the coming year.
Thank you also to Martha, Frank and Debbie for your unwavering dedication to our synagogue. Our
board will continue to work to ensure that proper policies and procedures are in place to support you in
your roles.
Rabbi Roland, you joined Shaarey Tikvah 7 years ago, and you still remind me of your 1 st visit here, when
during our walk to the Gold’s house I pretty much interviewed you the entire way. I hope I made up for it
by participating in your onboarding, to make your eventual transition to CST as smooth as possible. You
have become a respected leader and teacher both here and within our Cleveland Jewish community, and
we appreciate your fresh ideas for creative religious programming. And, you are a wonderful neighbor
and friend.
In closing, I want to thank my parents, Barbara & Julius Kneitel of blessed memory, for raising our Jewish
family in what was, at the time, a thriving Erie Jewish community. I am not sure if they would congratulate
me or tell me I’m crazy for assuming this new role, yet they would be proud nonetheless. Thank you,
Jan, for being an amazing wife, mother and support system for over 40 years, not an easy task if you
know me. Thank you Matt and Allie, for helping mom tolerate me over the next 2 years.
Thank you everyone for seeking out opportunities to become and stay active members, pursue an area of
interest, expand your circle of friends, welcome visitors with our trademark ‘aggressively friendly’
approach, and be open-minded to new ideas in the coming years. The evolution of CST is ongoing, so
please be excited for the future of our small shul, large community. Thank you.
Jessi Shapiro - Outgoing Presidential Speech
Good morning!
The past two years have gone by in the blink of an eye. It’s hard to believe all that’s happened or how far
we’ve come.
Two years ago, we had returned from COVID lockdown to in-person worship, but with the sanctuary doors
open, everyone masked, and no Torah parade. In contrast, yesterday morning many of us willingly moved
closer to each other for a more concentrated Mussaf experience.
Two years ago, we were fully masked indoors, so we had grab-and-go kiddush or gathered briefly outside.
Contrast that with our current tradition of Shabbat lunches at synagogue every week!
Today, I’m grateful that those days of isolation are behind us. There’s always uncertainty in life, but
Shaarey Tikvah continues to be a hub of togetherness for many of us. Martha has captured the past year
in words and images in this beautiful annual report, but I wanted to mention a few things that stood out
to me as deepening the sense of belonging at Shaarey Tikvah in the past year.
The worship committee has continued to innovate around Shabbat morning services while maintaining
that Shaarey Tikvah feeling. Psukei im Café has become a monthly fixture that draws folks in for the first
service. I know my Ethan makes sure we are not late those days, though he may be looking for a favorite
donut more than a favorite psalm!
When we had to engage in a whirlwind search for a High Holiday Cantor, so many of you stepped up with
contacts from your networks, turning a worrisome situation into one that showcased how much our
community cares. And we were able to connect with Cantor Laura Berman who led us beautifully through
last year’s High Holidays despite the short time available to prepare. I’m thrilled that we will be welcoming
her back this year.
50 congregants completed our Racial Inclusion Task Force’s Road to Teshuvah program designed to help
us extend our CST welcome to non-white and non-Ashkenazi Jews. I’m so proud of the Task Force for
seeing this program through from conception to delivery. And I’m equally proud of our congregants who
devoted four hours to this program and are poised to discuss potential next steps this coming year.
The LGBTQ+ Task Force successfully completed the Keshet Leadership Program to lower barriers and
continue to foster belonging for LGBTQ Jews at Shaarey Tikvah. Among other things, the group organized
a successful Pride Shabbat last year and is planning another for June 24 (2023).
Our YP, etc. group is thriving, organizing themselves on WhatsApp and having meaningful and fun-filled
get togethers around a variety of subjects.
And Adult Swim formed out of substantive conversations Wendy Sattin led with a group of adult
congregants about what Shaarey Tikvah means to them. If you haven’t had a chance to attend one of
Adult Swim’s vibrant Shabbat Supper Club events, look for more dates in the coming months.
Each of these adds to the sense of community here at Shaarey Tikvah. Visitors can sense it and
congregants tell their friends about it: we added 21 new member families this year, topping the 18 we
added last year.
(Continued on next page)
Jessi’s Speech, continued
I hope each new member finds the same sense of belonging that has sustained our longtime members for
many years. It was an amazing testament to our community to have over 100 folks here Friday night
(June 2, 2023) to celebrate our most veteran members in our first Celebration of Community.
The best thing about watching each of these groups and initiatives blossom over the past year or more, is
that I had very little to do with any of them! I’ve had the privilege of watching these dedicated leaders
pursue aspects of our community they are passionate about, inspiring me and their fellow congregants.
One thing I’ve learned from them, and you, is that belonging comes in many forms. It will come as no
surprise to you all that I feel most connected when I’m getting my hands dirty – moving chairs, chopping
onions, or schlepping donations. I’ve learned that others have a greater sense of belonging when
davening to a familiar tune, learning with longtime study partners, making a donation, or kibbitzing after
(or even during) services. Each of you has leaned in to what makes you feel most connected, and it’s
formed an amazing community which I feel so honored to have served.
Thank you to anyone who ever said “yes” when I badgered you (ahem!) presented you with an opportunity
to help.
Thank you to all who served on the executive committee and board over the past two years. Thank you for
being my sounding board, for caring enough to make suggestions about what could be better, and for your
commitment to treating each other with the utmost respect even during difficult discussions. We didn’t get
all the way to fixing the world, but at least I ended the last board meeting on time!
Ed, you got promoted unexpectedly this winter, but it was well deserved. Thank you for stepping up when
I needed to be away for a bit and for always having my back. You always listen first, ask thoughtful
questions, and honor everyone’s point of view. You’re an experienced leader with a huge depth of
knowledge about Shaarey Tikvah’s people and history. If anyone knows what it means to belong to
Shaarey Tikvah, it’s you.
Rabbi Roland, thank you for your support these last two years. Each of us got the other in trouble a few
times, but you always responded with compassion and love. I’ll miss our chats. I was never as organized
as I wanted to be – nevertheless I always left feeling buoyed up, even when the topics were heavy.
Martha, thank you for your can-do attitude. Even when I came up with crazy ideas, you never said, “That’s
never going to work!” You tried to run with it along with everything else you do to keep this place running -
despite the delusional volunteers you have to work with - with your cheerful good humor, even after 10
years!
Debbie, thank you for all your hugs this year! You are always looking for ways to improve what you do and
make Shaarey Tikvah even more welcoming.
Frank, thank you for always letting me know that you’ve checked and the food is kosher. And for making
sure that the toilets work, the lawn is mowed, the groceries are bought, the lights are on, the tables set up,
and a million other things I don’t even know about. Thank you for taking care of our congregation for the
last 25 years!
And thank you to all of you. Your generosity, dedication, and just your amazing selves make
Shaarey Tikvah the best place to belong. Thank you for letting me be a part of that these last two years.
RACIAL INCLUSION TASK FORCE
As kind and caring human beings, we generally strive to express empathy. Empathy involves experiencing
another person’s point of view, rather than just one’s own. It allows us to behave compassionately. Sometimes
it comes easy. At other times, we struggle with the expression of empathy and can even make the
other person feel worse. One example is the dilemma of the appropriate expression of empathy when
intending to comfort a mourner. We may want to share our life experience in an attempt to be empathetic.
This has the effect of “making it about ourselves” rather than about supporting the bereaved.
As we emphasized in our learning groups for welcoming Jews of Color, sometimes our impact does not
match our intent. When it comes to Jews of Color feeling a sense of belonging in our CST community, it is
the impact that matters, not the intent. I have overheard individuals share their Jewish experiences in an
attempt to empathize with the experience of Jews of Color. As emphasized very clearly in Haaretz.com:
“Tempted to Compare Anti-Semitism With Anti-Black Racism? Just Don’t”.
It is important to recognize that the historical oppression of Jews due to
anti-semitism is different from that of Black Americans, the community that
has experienced poverty and deprivation more than any other group in the
United States. It is essential that all Jews who can claim some form of white
identity and privilege listen carefully and intently to Jews of different races
and different ethnicities.
How do we express empathy when Jews of Color share their
experiences? Just listen actively. Make comments such as “I imagine that was very hurtful”; “how
insensitive of them”; “you absolutely do not deserve to be treated like that”; “if I hear someone making a
similar remark to you, I will stand with you”.
There are several websites that give further insights to the issues mentioned: Jewishexponent.com;
haaretz.com and njjewishnews.timesofsrael.com
Let us continue to strive to be a welcoming community for all!
Signs
by Marty Kohn
The convex disc shimmering on the other side of Fairmount Boulevard enables us to move forward by first
enabling us to look back...
In the mid-1950’s I remember walking on Coventry as my mom explained to me - sotto
voce*— what it was to be a DP**.
Later, I saw them again in the sculpture*** on the brick facing of the old Mayfield J
The image transfixed me then and still does to this day:
A zig-zagging line of wanderers, escapees, nomads, seekers, refugees
Jews on the move who never knew like the birds do
The shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line.
All life migrates: birds and seeds and trees and glaciers
And everything in-between.
It’s that slender state of in-between that we crave in our seeking new territory
That state of temporary permanence
With time to make our marks,
Leave the signs of our having been
Here and there and there and there.
Do you know the Prothonotary Warbler camouflages
The meaning of its name with its “h”? When the “h” is removed
The bird becomes First Scribe-- “proto notary”.
Alleged namesake of the Yellow Robed Catholic clerics
Who scratched the details of important events on their manuscripts
Just like the engraver who etched our new sign - a deeply planted historical marker--
That lauds our immigrant founders at the Fairmount entrance to Gates of Hope.
The birds take flight when the days’ length changes
When the temperature begins to gallop one direction or another.
When did our Founders sense the change?
Was she ironing a shirt? Was he fixing the radiator of his automobile?
She knew as soon as she saw the burning hole in the shirt.
He knew when the wrench fell through the slats in the sewer grate beneath the car.
The days were getting shorter. The temperature was changing. Glass was breaking.
So they took flight
And landed here;
So we remember them in our time of temporary permanence,
And remember, too, this lesson: By looking back we learn how to find our way ahead.
* In a whispered voice
The time a few of us volunteered at the Kosher Food Bank on June 11, was immensely rewarding for each of
us and no doubt, provided the necessary help to many. Working in small groups, we stuffed brown shopping
bags with a variety of vegetables and grocery items, based on a specific list posted on the wall. The more
items we packed, the more invigorated we all felt. Some even suggested making it a monthly event. Food for
thought!
Personally, I intend to return to the Kosher Food Bank and invite members again to join in for the next visit.
Thank you to the first group of volunteers that joined our Sisterhood sponsored event: Marty Kohn, Marcia
Silver, Gail Fox, Jason Bravo, Amelia Bravo, Fern Simkoff, Yaffa Silverman, Stephanie Steirn and Janice Steirn.
Remember your deceased loved ones by purchasing a bronze plaque for
the memorial boards in the back of the sanctuary. You do not need to have been a CST
member to be added to our walls of remembrance.
Also, adding a brass Simcha leaf to the boards in the hallway is a
beautiful way to celebrate a birth, a B’nai Mitzvah, a “Thank You”,
a Milestone Birthday, Anniversary or other life cycle event.
Contact the Office to purchase a plaque or leaf.
There are two possible interpretations of Elul
Elul Reflections - 5784
Song)אֲנִ of Songs ִ֤י לְדֹודִ י֙ וְ דֹודִ ִ֣ י ִ֔ לִי Elulאֱלּול/ as an acronym for (1
6:3) Ani L’dodi V’dodi Li. “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is
mine.” Those who interpret Elul in this way understand the month as
a time to work on our relationship with the Divine. This is a time to
reengage with Hashem as we prepare to stand before Hashem to be
judged on Rosh Hashanah. In this way we begin the New Year with
renewed connection and intimacy between ourselves and the Holy
One of Blessing.
Esther)אִ (9:22 Ish L’re’ehu V’matanot ִ֣ יׁש לְרֵ ִ֔עֵהּו ּומַ תָּ נ֖ ֹות לָָּֽ אֶ בְ יֹונִָֽ ים Elulאֱלּול/ as an acronym for (2
L’evyonim. “To one another and gifts to the poor.” This verse is referring to our obligation to send portions
to one another (Mishloach Manot) on Purim and to give gifts to the needy around us. Those who interpret
Elul in this way understand the month as a time to work on our relationship with each other. As we learn in
the Mishnah (Yoma 8:9), “For transgressions between a person and God, Yom Kippur atones; however, for
transgressions between a person and another, Yom Kippur does not atone until he appeases the other
person.” Though Divine forgiveness comes naturally, we know that human forgiveness takes work.
I would like to invite you to join me in engaging with both aspects of Elul this year in a new way. Below you
will find a short list of prompts upon which I invite you to reflect in the coming weeks. Feel free to pick one
or to mix and match as you please. You may choose to reflect by writing a short response, a poem, a
drawing, or in any other way the spirit moves you. Responses will be included in the HHD Tochnit and will
be available for all of us to read and enjoy during this year’s High Holy Day services.
I am very excited to see the ways your reflections will add to our experience this season. Once completed,
please feel free to e-mail your submissions to Debbie Rosen debbie@shaareytikvah.org no later than
September 1
5 E.L.U.L Reflection Prompts
1) If we were to truly understand that we are created in the image of the Divine, how might our relationship
with God be reflected in our relationship with each other and vice versa?
2) Each of the acronyms above reflect mitzvot regarding love. We are commanded to love God (Deut. 6:5)
and we are commanded to love each other (Lev. 19:18). How might you personally commit to fulfilling
either or both of these mitzvot in the coming year?
3) In his book, “The Tanya,” Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi (18 Century Lithuania) describes Elul as a time
of Divine proximity. Does God feel close or distant to you right now? Explore why that may be.
4) On Rosh Hashanah, God sits upon the Throne of Judgement. Between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur,
God moves to set upon a Throne of Love. Which is a better motivator for you, judgement or love? Are there
aspects of each that are helpful in different parts of your life?
5) While social psychologists debate whether or not people can change, it is our Jewish belief that change
is possible. Do you agree with this idea? What does true change look like? Do you believe change is
possible for you?
