A Message From President Ed Kneitel
I had the opportunity to socialize with some of my CST friends a few weekends ago. I floated the idea for a
group activity and ended up with 14 people coming along for the fun. When I suggested dinner after the
activity, one of the couples offered to host a pot luck in their home. This made the day even more special.
As I think back on this day, I realize that some of the relationships I have with this group go back over 30 years.
Some started at The Agnon (Mandel) School, and all continued at Shaarey Tikvah. We have shared simchot,
grieved during times of loss, and reached out to each other for friendship and support when necessary. These
are truly lifelong friends.
I’m sure you have similar stories of friendships made through school, work or shul, and these relationships grew
organically through mutual interests, play dates with your children, school event participation, or simply getting
to know someone by enjoying Shabbat lunch at the same table. It starts small, sometimes without
even realizing it, and it often turns into a lifelong bond.
We continue to offer this opportunity at Shaarey Tikvah, to create generational friendships through worship,
educational and membership activities that bring congregants together to celebrate our successes, and learn
new ways to connect with Judaism through prayer and learning. Do you enjoy weekly Jewish text study? If so,
Rabbi Roland’s midweek Mishnah class is the perfect way to spend part of your Wednesday morning. How
about alternative Shabbat morning prayers? If yes, remember to join the monthly Pesukei Café for a niggun
and a nosh!
These opportunities are borne from committee meetings where dedicated congregants offer and act on
creative and fresh ideas for the many events we schedule throughout the year. One such committee is
membership, which is currently going through a re-energizing process! Our new chairperson, Alyson Fieldman,
is looking for congregants who can commit to one meeting plus 1-2 hours of volunteer work each month,
focused on new member recruitment and current member retention. This is an important committee for our
shul, so please consider contacting Alyson if you have time and energy.
Our other committees and task forces are also active and working on programming for a broad spectrum of
our congregation. Please contact me if you are interested in giving your time to these important initiatives.
It is through the hard work of our committees, combined with the dedication of our congregants to brainstorm,
organize, plan, advertise and attend our events, that will allow us to continue to create new, and strengthen
existing, relationships for years to come.
A Message from Rabbi Scott Roland
Dear Friends,
I am writing to you a day after returning from Washington, D.C., where nearly 300,000 of us gathered on the
National Mall to show our loving support for Israel, to demand release of her hostages, and to showcase our
Jewish pride amid increasing antisemitism. As I looked upon the crowd yesterday, I repeated the words of
Chronicles 17:21 to myself: “Mi k’amcha Yisrael,” who is like Your people Israel? With two weeks to plan,
Jewish Federations of North America and the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations lead
us and partnered with us to ensure an enormous, safe, peaceful, and meaningful gathering. In a world that
was beginning to feel like a lonely place for Jews, I felt very much at home. I arrived home past midnight,
simultaneously exhausted and energized.
Though I did not travel with our Cleveland delegation, it is
worth noting how impressive it was. Cleveland Federation was
the only Federation who chartered twenty five busses to bring
nearly 1300 people to the rally for free. Combined with those
of us who made our way to D.C. by other means, Cleveland
was very well represented. One did not have to look far about
the sea of people to see Clevelanders standing out with our
branded signs and swag. Several friends commented that they
looked for me among the Cleveland delegation. I chuckled at
the thought as there seemed to be mini Cleveland delegations
in every section of the National Mall.
Now we are home, and I am thinking about how best to keep yesterday’s experience with me. There was
a particular safety, security, and joy that I felt surrounded by so many lovers of Jews and Israel. This is a
feeling that has felt somewhat out of reach over the past six weeks. One does not have to look too hard to
uncover Jew Hatred in our world today. We see it everywhere we look, be it in the increasing security of our
beloved institutions, the desecration of a local Jewish cemetery, or the hateful rhetoric of today’s digital
world.
As I consider how to hold on to the emotions I felt in Washington D.C., I am immediately turn to the
importance of our Shaarey Tikvah community. We have had two evenings of song and reflection to make
room for our members to process the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. We were fortunate to be able to learn from
Israeli American comedian, Benji Lovitt that it is okay to laugh, even at times like these. Every Shabbat has
provided the opportunity to stand with our community to offer prayers for Israel, the IDF, and the safe return
of the hostages.
I want to thank Alana Gallardo and Anna Rosenfeld for their support in holding space for our community to
gather in the wake of the October 7 th attacks. If you are interested in imagining how we might continue to
process together as a community, please contact me to join our little task force. Otherwise, I want to remind
you that self-care is extremely important at this time. I am here to listen to any members of our community
who may be struggling. If this sounds like you, I sincerely hope you will reach out.
With blessings for love and light,
Rabbi Scott B. Roland
A Message From Martha Sivertson
A few days ago, I met with Leona Green as she is planning her 90 th Birthday Party for
Shabbat, December 23 rd here at Shaarey Tikvah. I hope you can all join us in wishing
her all the best on the road to 100!
Our conversation, however, took a slight turn from the proposed lunch menu, as I
realized, in all my years of seeing Leona at events and services, I had never gotten the
chance to talk to her about her former life in the community. Most of you probably know
a lot about Leona already but one thing, in particular, stuck out to me… memory from
her Lyndhurst neighborhood.
Many of us know our next-door neighbors or even others from our block, so to speak,
but how many of us get together every Saturday night with them? Not me, for sure.
Leona and her husband be-friended many Christian (and Jewish) couples and spent
many a Saturday evening talking and laughing and singing. As a matter of fact, singing
was mandatory! Each person needed to sing, not just any song but, THEIR song.
Leona could not remember what her song was but it got me thinking about what
MY song would be.
There are so many songs that became my favorite year-by-year or season-by-season.
Some songs achieved that status because of the memory it conjured up – a boyfriend,
a holiday, birth of my daughters, etc. But when I went home and told my husband about
this “challenge”, he, without hesitation, said that my song has to be the one below. I
had learned it in my High School Glee Club and used it for auditions, while washing
dishes and even serving a tennis ball. What my husband remembers, though, is in
singing my daughters to sleep. Not exactly a lullaby but an easy lesson.
Everywhere you go, sunshine follows you.
Everywhere you go, skies are always blue.
Children love you, they seem to know
You bring roses out of the snow.
The whole world says “hello”
Everywhere you go.
- Willie Nelson
Happy Birthday, Leona. Thank you for the inspiration.
Now, what would YOUR song be?
Saturday Evening, January 20th
The Three Mens Clubs are hosting a dinner dance Saturday evening, January 20, at Park
Synagogue. Tickets are $75 per person. Proceeds will go to Neve Hanna, a youth
village supported by the Masorti Movement in Israel. Neve Hana is just 14 miles from
Gaza. They were serving children with trauma from the south before October 7. Now they
are pressed to the limit serving children directly traumatized by the terrorist slaughter.
They also must replace their security fence with a wall as well as increase the number of
security personnel at the village. There will be chances to be a sponsor for this event.
Sisterhood Corner
Sisterhood Shabbat
In a world where women’s rights are being denied, limited, controlled, and monitored, we had a chance
to celebrate and enjoy ourselves expressing our individuality in various ways, while leading Sisterhood
Shabbat service with all its parts, according to the conservative movement.
A little pizzazz added a flare by Alyson and Roz with their beautiful 20’s and
50’s hats, Edie and Nora with their tall striped and very colorful Dr. Seuss hats
and the rest of us, who wore a variety of hat styles or no hats at all. The Bima
was decorated with USA flags in Respect to Veterans on Veterans Day, and
Israeli flags - in support of Israel.
New beautiful catchy Shacharit tunes were introduced by Rachel Hutt and
Adon Olam was sung by Deana Stein. Elise Braverman-Plotkin, as the head
service leader (Rabbi role) added a special and current touch to the prayer for
Rosh Chodesh, correlating it to the emotional aspect of the war in Israel. The
meaningful D’var was delivered by Alice Schubach who dedicated it in memory
of her husband, Bob, gave much needed inspiration to us all.
The energy, content and flow of the service provided us a much needed safe space to pray together
especially during these rough times where we are getting singled out with hate. I wish I would get an
extra page to thank each and every person who had a role in the service. Kudos to all, new and
veterans!
A big shout out to the three amazing young women: Moriyah Roland, Liora Fieldman and Adina Gordon,
who, without hesitation, accepted my invitation to read Torah with only 7- 8 days of practice, wow!
An array of Israeli dishes, with the rich colors, flavors, and aroma, covered the long serving tables with
a diversified menu that left no one hungry.
Ruth Hatchuel, spoiled us with delicious cheese cakes and other sweets.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the service as well as helped with prep, decorations,
cooking, baking etc.
It certainly takes a village to make Sisterhood Shabbat
Happen and I am grateful to be part of this amazing
village, the CST Sisterhood!
We have now partnered with CMHA to fill a void in services. Members connect by
phone with families who have housing vouchers to assist in the
search for affordable housing. The interest of voucher holders in
receiving this service has increased rapidly. Free training is
provided by CMHA. This is an extremely exciting and valuable
volunteer opportunity.
CST Virtual Holiday Auction 2023
Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s
auction. With your bids, we raised $6,425.
Dear Friends,
Thank you to all of you who supported our auction by donating items, and by
bidding and buying. Our little committee (Roz Stone, Laurie Starner, Gayle
Shapiro, Debbie, Martha and Doug Fox, photographer) worked hard to make it
all happen.
While the total raised this year was short of our goal, we had fun and know the
profits will be put to good use.
Think about joining “the fun” next year!
Elisabeth C. Plax
Committee chair
Consider sponsoring a lunch in your Birthday month or,
simply, contributing to the lunch in honor of someone (even
yourself!) with a small (or large) cash donation.
Always want lox ($100) or brownies ($50)
or Mitchell’s Ice Cream ($350) on your birthday?
Contact Martha for specific pricing.
Remember your deceased loved ones by purchasing a bronze plaque for
the memorial boards in the back of the sanctuary. You do not need to have been a
CST member to be added to our walls of remembrance.
Also, adding a brass Simcha leaf to the boards in the hallway is a
beautiful way to celebrate a birth, a B’nai Mitzvah, a “Thank You”,
a Milestone Birthday, an Anniversary, or other life cycle event.
Contact the office to purchase a plaque or leaf at 216-765-8300 ext. 101 or
martha@shaareytikvah.org
We need your help to continue this lovely tradition.
occasion, or commemorate the Yahrzeit of a loved
one, by sponsoring a Shabbat lunch. See weekly
email for the link to SIGN-UP GENIUS, or contact
the office. Someone will contact you to confirm
dates and pricing. Thanks!
