A Message From President Ed Kneitel
My work career has always demanded that I keep up with the times, be it in finance, technology or systems.
As a consultant, controller and finance director, it was and is my responsibility to shepherd my clients, and
colleagues, through the change management cycle. The process can be lengthy and demanding depending
on the change, as organizations and teams work through identifying the best options, gaining buy-in,
acknowledging loss, and moving forward with the change management plan. The goal, of course, is to
improve, to try something new, to experiment, and to avoid complacency. The goal is not to change for the
sake of change, as without a plan this approach is doomed to failure.
With this explanation as background, I want to address two upcoming changes that are top of mind for our
congregation.
High Holy Days 5785 / 2024
Our congregation has moved forward with changes for the upcoming High Holy Days, which include lay-led
services, a new choir director and reimagined chorus. Our lay leaders – Dave Hutt, Ted Einhorn, Rachel Hutt,
Aviva Roland, Rachel Lappen and I – have been hard at work with Rabbi Roland reviewing the order of the
service, honoring the familiar melodies of prayers, and looking for opportunities to introduce a few new
melodies where possible. I commend Deana Stein, our chorus coordinator, who has done an incredible
amount of work in a short period of time. Deana has worked with Rabbi Roland to identify prayers for familiar
and new choral arrangements, is working toward finalizing a contract with a new choral director, and will soon
start the search process for several new choral members! Yasher Koach for this group’s hard work and
dedication.
One loss to acknowledge is that Peter Clausen, our long-time choir director. Peter will not be joining us for the
upcoming High Holy Days. He has worked with Shaarey Tikvah off and on (mostly on!) for almost 50 years,
and his dedication to our shul can’t be understated. In recognition of his years of service, we will honor Peter
at our upcoming Celebration of Community on Friday evening, May 31 st . Please plan to attend to celebrate
not only our congregation and our successes, but also Peter’s dedication to Shaarey Tikvah’s choir.
Musical Futures
I mentioned in a previous congregational email that the Board decided to create a sub-committee, tasked to
determine the best options for our musical future at this time. This sub-committee will be chaired by our
Board Executive Vice President, Isaac Kirstein. The recommendation of this sub-committee, be it a visiting
cantor, individual with a professional voice, or other innovative model, will be brought to both the worship
committee and Board for consideration. If you are interested in participating on this sub-committee, please
reach out to either Isaac Kirstein or me.
Interfaith Inclusion
Rabbi Roland’s powerful sermon during last year’s High Holy Day services focused on the role and inclusion of
non-Jewish partners and spouses of our Jewish congregants. Rabbi Roland directed the worship committee
and Board to research and learn about this topic, with the goal of changing our bylaws to be more inclusive of
interfaith families. We had a brief learning session during a shul seudah last year, however we were not able
to dedicate the time necessary to learn as a congregation, let alone bring this issue to either the worship
committee or the Board for meaningful discussion. We now plan to discuss and learn about this important
topic as a congregation throughout the new fiscal year.
We look forward to beautiful and meaningful High Holy Day services, as well as thoughtful learning and
discussion related to our musical future and interfaith inclusion.
A Message from Rabbi Scott Roland
I am writing this bulletin on the first day of spring, five days past the due date the CST Office gave me
for submission. (Sorry Martha and Debbie!) While it is currently 30 degrees and snowing, five days ago
we enjoyed a high of 73 degrees. You might say that instead of writing my article, my head was in the
clouds, the trees, and even a bit in the soil. While spring technically begins on March 20 (actually a day
before this year because of the leap year), you’ve likely noticed that spring began weeks ago. I love this
time of year. You can see the chlorophyll returning to the trees. Some shoots have already begun to
blossom. Others are poking through the earth. Even 40 degrees in March somehow feels warmer than
40 degrees in November. With the days getting longer and longer, we can finally say, “For now the
winter is past, the rains are over and gone. The blossoms have appeared in the land, the time of
pruning [or singing] has come; the song of the turtledove is heard in our land.” (Shir HaShirim 2:11-12)
Now that the winter is past, you may be wondering what happened to our usual winter shabbaton. Well,
the answer is that this year we are going to have a spring shabbaton! It will be the Shabbat of May 3-4.
Holly Sukol and I spent a good number of hours this winter travelling to various camps and retreat
centers. We tried to find an ideal off-site location. Alas, we could not find a place that had enough
space, reasonable enough accommodations, availability that synched with the CST calendar, and a
kitchen that would allow us to bring in kosher food. For better or worse, we will be on-site again this
year. That said, Holly and I have some fun ideas for activities, and for the use of our space, to be sure
the shabbaton feels different from any other week.
Our theme this year will be, “Divine Dialogues: Speaking truth with God”. We will focus on how to pray,
and how to build regular prayer practices, that are authentic to who we are and to our relationship with
God. To that end, I am very excited that my teacher, Rabbi Ebn Leader, will be our scholar in residence.
Rabbi Leader is a masterful leader of prayer, teacher, and spiritual seeker. Registration information will
be in your inbox very soon.
As I consider the springtime and the theme for this year’s shabbaton, I am reminded of a teaching from
Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav:
Every single word is an entire world. When a person stands up to pray and recites the
words of the prayers, they are gathering beautiful buds and flowers and blossoms, like
someone walking in a field picking lovely blossoms and flowers one at a time, until they
make a bouquet. After that they pick more, one by one, making another bouquet, and joining
them together. So they go on, picking and gathering more and more lovely bouquets.
(Likutei Mohoran 65:2:5)
I wonder what our tefillot would look like if we prayed as if we were putting together a bouquet of spring
flowers for Hashem. Might we consider the same questions we ask ourselves when typically picking out
flowers? Are my words fresh? Are they pleasing? Are they colors that my Divine recipient will
appreciate? Am I investing a reasonable amount for the occasion? These are the types of questions I
hope we will consider during our spring shabbaton. I sincerely hope that you will join us. Until then,
happy spring!
Document of Authorization for the Sale of Hametz
Shtar Harsha’ah 5784
We the undersigned grant all authority, by means of signature, whether
transmitted by fax, email or other means to Rabbi Scott B. Roland that
he be appointed and authorized by us to sell all of our hametz, of all kinds, whether it is pure, an admixture, or
merely an item that might have hametz contained therein. We also authorize him in the sale of any partial ownership
of hametz that we may share with any non-Jew, whether such hametz is found in our house, attic, basement or places
outside of our house, on the sea or on the land; so too may he sell any hametz over which we do not have ownership
but do have authority. We grant him full power according to the laws of the Torah and the laws of this country
or any country in which we have any of the sorts of ownership or authority mentioned above. Rabbi Roland is also
granted full authority to sell any animals of ours that are nourished and feed on hametz in any and all locales where
they are found. Furthermore, he may sell this hametz in any manner he wishes and to any one he wishes, with as
many agents as he appoints. Even if no money is transferred at the point of sale, we will accept the sale as fully
binding in all its particulars; nor will we ever make any claim against that sale’s legal validity.
Rabbi Roland is authorized by us to rent all of the places in which our hametz or our animals are found, and to rent
access and full rights of passage and foot traffic to those places to the purchaser of said hametz who may seize there
any vessels and moveable property connected with the hametz.
In addition, Rabbi Roland and any of his assignees are also authorized to sell any hametz that may come into our
possession until the 14 th of Nisan, the very hour until which it is permitted to buy and sell hametz and items and
things in which such impermissible fermentation/leavening might occur. In a year when Erev Pesach falls on
Shabbat, the date of sale will occur just before Shabbat enters on the 13 th of Nisan. Should such fermentation/
leavening occur from the moment of signing this contract, or even during Passover, we distance ourselves from any
sort of ownership of it, and relinquish any rights to it. The non-Jewish buyer has full rights to such hametz as to any
other ownerless property.
Authority is in Rabbi Roland’s hands to actuate this sale using whatever instruments he deems effective according
to Torah law and according to governmental law; we will consider this sale as binding as if carried out by the
highest and most influential religious or secular court.
Our signature below, in whatever manner it is transmitted to Rabbi Roland, indicates our full and unconditional
acceptance of all of the terms outlined above.
A Message From Martha Sivertson
I have appreciated being able to write some non-Shaarey Tikvah related articles through the
years here in GATEWAYS. My job inspires my life and vice versa. This has always been a good
thing in the sense that it is a constant learning experience. However, I want to use his particular
month to do some “spring cleaning”, so to speak, to let you know a few projects that are on my
desk with hopeful conclusions before the end of the fiscal year (June 30).
In no particular order:
A $40,000 FEMA grant to replace many of our current windows with security ones. This
basically means that because all of our windows came with the building in 1970 (though
we did not move in until 1986) so replacement parts are, relatively, non-existent. Rabbi
Roland found some opening fixings on a website a few years ago but we can actually replace
entire casements. I have one quote in now. Should you have suggestions for additional
window people, let me know.
Sanctuary roof replacement. After a recent inspection, and repairs to 4 shingles, it was
found to have considered hail damage. Our insurance company has awarded us just
under $50,000 to have the entire sanctuary (steeped) roof replaced with some minor
interior painting. I have 4 quotes on this that the insurance company is reviewing.
Tuck pointing on the east side of the building. This cement failure was observed last year
when we were having the sukkah re-painted. It is no small job. The first quote, last
summer, came in at $12,000. I have two other companies quoting on this by April 1.
Grass replacement around the grounds due to the exterior lighting grant last year. This is
$5,000 job in that there are rocks and entire swaths of grass that need to be replaced
and tended to throughout the spring and early summer. Some of these funds can come
from the Henry and Marion Gruen Garden Fund.
Installation of a bench by the Ohio Historical Marker. This had been on my list last year but it
turned into more than just plopping down a bench. “Installing” means making sure it
won’t flip over! This should be about a $2,500 project. Fortunately, The Robert and Alice
Schubach Fund and the Wertheim Family Fund have already allotted the funds to
complete this “easy” one.
Moving on, there are so many things I would like to also get done like… tearing up the south
parking lot and planting trees and creating a beautiful seating area in the north lot Euclid Creek
area and creating a full sloping area of flowering groundcover along the whole west side of the
building and installing solar panels and modernizing the kitchen and replacing the sanctuary
carpeting but…those will need to wait. Isn’t that what the summer is for?
Men’s Club
Passover Fund
“Let all who are hungry come and eat”
As we start looking towards Purim and Pesach, generally a happy time that is shared
with family and community, let us not forget CST congregants less fortunate by giving to
the Passover fund. Dollars collected help those in need to celebrate Seders and to
enjoy the entire Passover season. All donations received by April 16, will be, discreetly,
distributed by Rabbi Roland. Thanks, in advance, for your generosity!
Yellow Candle Campaign
The Yellow Candle program was created in 1981 by men’s clubs to keep alive the memory of the Six Million who
perished in the Shoah. The Candle is modeled after a traditional Jewish memorial Yahrzeit candle that burns for
24 hours during periods of mourning and on the Yahrzeit anniversary of a family member. Survivors asked how
could Yahrzeits be observed for those victims whose
entire families had been wiped out. An idea was born - a
unique memorial candle with yellow wax, to remember
the yellow stars forced upon European Jews during the
Nazi regime. In April, you will be able to sign up to get a
candle from the CST Men’s Club which you will be able to
either pick up at the Synagogue or have delivered to your
home. Donations welcome but not required.
Why in the Home?
Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) is sometimes commemorated with large mass gatherings in
communities and synagogues. FJMC (Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs) has long understood that Holocaust
Remembrance should also take place in the home to allow people to reflect on the horrors of the Holocaust and
how that affected Jews generations later. The Shoah Yellow Candle is a mechanism for families to gather for a
moment to teach and to explain to our children and grandchildren the impact and the survival of that horrific
moment in Jewish history. For 43 years, families have come together to light the Shoah Yellow Candle, to
remember, to teach, and not to forget.
NEW BARBEQUE GRILL FOR CST
The CST Men’s Club is pleased to donate a new larger grill for synagogue
events. This grill will make it possible to cook quicker in larger
quantities. A special thank you to Doug and Gail Fox and
Roberta and Gary Kaplan for their financial contributions
that helped to make this possible.
Sisterhood Corner
Raising Funds for ISRAEL continues - Deadline: May 1, 2024
The October 7 massacre naturally intensified our concern for the state of Israel. We pray for the state of Israel,
the IDF soldiers, hostages and their families, the Israeli citizens - every Shabbat and in between. A chair with an
Israeli flag, a picture of hostages and a candle is placed on the bimah to remind us of our people - our land.
Although we want to do more and more for Israel, we need to stay mindful and cannot let ourselves get into a
state of fatigue. Israel needs us! Let’s work together, raise funds for Israel and show our continued support!
Sisterhood funds For Israel
The $500 raised via the 2024 Mahjongg Cards sale will be donated to Israel.
100% of the proceeds from our Ballroom Dance in March-are being donated to Israel.
Members have donated and we are hoping for far more of our community to participate.
As we get closer to the May 1 st deadline and depending upon the amount raised, Rabbi Scott will guide us
where/who to donate it to, in Israel.
On behalf of Sisterhood, I thank each of you in advance, for your generosity and care for our Israel!
Ballroom Dancing Lesson and Party with Debbie and Jerry on March 16
It was truly “ A Ball”. During the uncertainty and tension overseas in Israel, and here, on US soil, an evening with
dancing seemed to be a fun way to remind us to take care of ourselves, while raising funds.
The tables in the social hall were dressed in blue and white: tablecloths, flowers, and sparkling Jewish stars
surrounded by blue and white gems. Strings of Israeli flags and flashy blue lights shone on the social hall walls.
Entering the CST social hall left no one guessing that “ISRAEL” was indeed the theme. A party is not a party
without food and drinks, and so, two extra tables topped with goodies did the trick. From hot and soft drinks,
wine and liquor to an array of awesome snacks, fruit and desserts were beautifully displayed by my secret
Sisterhood helper, Rene’.
The energy in the social hall was awesome! Although some people felt tired when they arrived and/or informed
me that would probably leave early for various reasons, once the music started, time simply passed by for us all,
and before we knew it, it was 11 PM and we needed to fold anyway.
10
Although not Jewish, Debbie and Jerry, donated their time and expertise for our benefit. WOW! Jerry, a
professional Disc Jockey, quickly set up his impressive sound equipment and joined his wife, Debbie, who is a
seasoned dance instructor, in their dance lesson. The couple, with grace and lots of patience, broke down
quite few dance steps into small parts, added some tips to ease the process, and guided us along each
dance until we were able to dance to the music (or close to it) Ok, I’ll admit, although none of us is quite
ready for “Dancing with the Stars” or “Do You Think You Can Dance” (my personal favorite), the invaluable
lessons we have acquired were a hit.
Extra special moments and a disclosure:
“Spotting” is a technique used by dancers to avoid getting dizzy and lose balance when quickly spinning (360,
720 or more degrees.) We were grateful to Debbie for taking extra time to explain and demonstrate it, in spite
of the different interpretations that were offered on the floor.
Some dancing steps are not the easiest to grasp, especially as partners face one another and step with
opposite feet. As the night progressed and our grasping capacities perhaps declined a bit, the challenges
grew. At one point, one special man who suddenly “got” the step, exclaimed to his lovely partner, “Come to
me now, I’m afraid to stop..” We all burst out laughing, as we could relate to the momentary achievement.
… You Go Ed!
A little secret - Rene and I had an ice-cream bar, with a few different flavors and topping options ready to go.
However, I decided that any disruption to the dancing momentum and fun with Debbie and Jerry, could have
possibly ended the evening, and so I skipped the ice cream break… Sorry guys! I owe you all Ice cream.
Special thanks to Jerry, Debbie and Rene’, and all those who came and supported Sisterhood in support of
Israel.
Sisterhood will be accepting donations for Israel (small or large) until May 1st.
May we all have a happy and meaningful Pesach!
Sisterhood President,
The Village is an all-volunteer, non-profit membership organization serving older adults living in
Cleveland’s eastern Heights area suburbs. Shaarey Tikvah was thrilled to receive a grant to pay your
membership in this fine organization. The Village provides no-cost services to members through the
help of vetted and trained volunteers. For example, they offer rides to/from doctors and grocers, telephone
check-ins, and help with simple household or technical tasks. Social, informational and
wellness events are regularly scheduled as well.
The Village will be sponsoring a Kiddush lunch for us on May 11!
For information on how to apply for membership, email Martha at martha@shaareytikvah.org. or call (216) 765-
Heights community!
