Carver Award Nominations 

Call for Nominations: The 10th annual Carver Award for 

Emerging Writers opens on Monday, May 15th and close on 

Monday, June 26th, 5pm 2023. 

The Nelson and District Arts Council and Elephant Mountain 

Literary Festival request assistance in nominating emerging 

writers in West Kootenay communities for the 10th 

Annual Carver Award. The award, which comes with a $500 

cash prize, will be presented at the Elephant Mountain Literary 

Festival in Sept 2023. 

Nominations must be for writers just starting in their careers 

who have had one to two books published, or an equivalent 

body of work published in anthologies or literary journals. The 

work must be creative, literary writing, including fiction, creative 

nonfiction, poetry, and writing for children and teens. 

Self-published authors are eligible. Nominees, who must 

reside in the West Kootenay, are judged using three criteria: 

quality of work, the strength of nomination, and community 

engagement. Nominations must include name and contact 

information for both the nominator and the nominee, writing 

discipline (fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, teen, children’s, 

etc), titles of published works and their publishers, and a paragraph 

outlining the reason for the nomination. 

Richard Carver was a lover of the arts and the Kootenays, 

and he was invested in the community. He was a mover and 

shaker on the board of the Nelson and District Arts Council, 

the primary sponsor of this award named in his honour. His 

daughter Jocelyn Carver, an arts lover herself, has continued 

the family’s generous support of this award. 

The 2022 recipient Zaynab Mohammed shares “Last year I 

received the Richard Carver Award for being a local emerging 

writer. Well, I have emerged! This award was like a set of wings

THE 2ND ANNUAL DANDELION 

FESTIVAL -Salmo Valley’s Spring Festival 

on Saturday, May 27, is being held 

at the picturesque For-rest Retreat, 

www.for-rest.ca just North of Salmo. 

Participants can expect a peaceful, 

serene environment with an artisan 

market, acoustic music, backwoods 

sauna, hiking trails, fresh sushi, wood 

fired pizza and engaging activities for 

all ages. All of the above will be ‘admission 

by donation’ at the gate. The 

focal point and highlight of the Dandelion 

Festival is in the workshops 

and incredible presenters that we are 

featuring. Access to these workshops 

is available only to Festival Pass Holders. 

As a pass holder you can fill your 

day with inspiring and heart nourishing 

workshops, choosing from the 

selection of at least fifteen different 

workshops. Each facilitated workshop 

will run for a minimum of one hour 

over the course of the day. You will be 

able to create a unique, to you, experience.

Grief Support Volunteer Training 

What do you say to someone who has just experienced a major 

loss? There is a desire to acknowledge that loss, but the right 

words may be hard to find. The person needs support but finding 

the right way to reach out can be challenging. 

“Grief is a universal experience”, notes Hospice Chair Brenda 

Hooper. “We sustain losses, big and small, all through our life. 

The greatest loss is when a loved one dies, but the loss of a beloved 

pet, a home, or a job all cause a grief reaction too.” 

Few people understand what the process of normal grief is like, 

or how to navigate the complex emotional, physical or spiritual 

reactions they are experiencing. Brenda explains that the people 

around the grieving person may accept these responses as normal 

for a few weeks or months but may become frustrated when 

people continue to grieve for longer periods of time. Few realize 

grief and loss are a life-long process. 

The Greater Trail Hospice Society is looking for volunteers who 

would like to learn more about the grief journey. The upcoming 

workshop will provide an opportunity for community members 

to learn how grief progresses and what can be expected as a person 

mourns. Volunteers working from a philosophy of companioning 

a person through this life-changing time helps grievers 

discover ways to move forward into a life that has changed significantly. 

Brenda describes the training, “This is a chance to 

acquire skills that will help anyone support family and friends 

through grief, but it also provides an opportunity to fill a real 

need in our community. Over the pandemic there were so many 

losses that could not be processed, and we are now seeing the 

huge need for grief support in this area.” 

The Grief Support Training Workshop will be held in Trail on 

May 26 and 27 (Friday evening and Saturday) and June 9 and 

10 (participants attend both weekends). The cost is $30 for

The pandemic highlighted the many benefits of getting outside 

regularly and connecting with nature. 

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada underlined 

the need for us to deepen our understanding and knowledge 

of local Indigenous history, culture, language and land. 

The UN The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 

recently shared that “Education on climate change adaptation 

should be a lifelong learning process that equips learners with the 

needed practical knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to live in 

the new climate realities as well as socio-emotional resilience to 

face possible climate anxiety”. 

Through environmental education, non-profit organizations 

such as the Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network 

(CBEEN), Wildsight and dozens of other local groups work tirelessly 

to address all of these critical pieces, and more. This work 

supports the sustainability and resilience of our local communities, 

land, homes and planet. And the people of our region have 

responded by engaging in these programs and initiatives in record 

numbers. 

Columbia Basin Trust has until recently said that “residents of 

all ages deserve opportunities to learn about the region they live 

in and be inspired to take care of it”. However, their current plan 

is to withdraw all support from all of these programs, initiatives 

and organizations as they have said that they have heard this is no 

longer a priority in this region.

encourage you to have your voice heard at the upcoming community 

engagement sessions that Columbia Basin Trust has planned 

for your community, as well as through their online survey:

Be Bear Aware 

With Spring, also Bear season is upon 

us and in addition to disposing of garbage 

properly, avoiding birdfeeders 

and cleaning BBQ areas, there is also 

the yard and garden to consider...It is 

much easier to keep food away from a 

wild bear in the first place than it is to 

teach who has already been rewarded 

with human food/waste to stop accessing 

that easy, high calorie source. 

Securing attractants is the single best 

way to keep people safe, prevent property 

damage, and avoid the unnecessary 

killing of bears that come into conflict 

with people. 

Here are some tips: 

In the Garden: 

• Vegetable gardens, especially those 

containing potatoes and root vegetables 

such as carrots and beets, attract bears. 

Flower gardens are not as attractive to 

bears as long as they don’t contain sweet 

vetch, dandelions and clover. 

• Harvest garden vegetables as they 

ripen. 

• Consider a permanent electric fence 

to keep animals out of your garden. 

• Never use blood meal, fish fertilizer 

or deer repellent in any garden. 

Landscaping: 

• Avoid using plants that bears like 

to eat next to doorways, windows or 

entrances, near children’s play sets, 

beside paths and high use areas. 

• Avoid seeding with clover and keep 

your grass cut and free of dandelions. 

• Plants that bear fruit or nuts should 

be used with caution. 

Compost: 

• Use a bear-proof composter. 

• Keep your compost clean and odour 

free. Use equal amounts of brown and 

green matter. Keep compost aerated and 

properly turned. 

• Never compost meat, fish, oil, grease 

or dairy products. 

• Sprinkle your compost with lime to 

aid in decomposition and reduce odour. 

Bury kitchen waste and cover with dry 

leaves or dried grass clippings. 

• Locate compost well away from the 

forest edge, thickets and natural pathways 

used by bears. 

• Start a community compost at your 

local electric-fenced landfill. 

• Try indoor vermicomposting!

destinations, provided certain common sense safety precautions are observed. 

Because the water in our reservoirs is used for flood control and the production of electricity, reservoir 

water levels can rise or fall daily. Reservoir users should be aware that changing water levels can conceal 

submerged hazards, particularly in shallow water near the shoreline. It is important that visitors be aware 

of these potential dangers and take precautions to stay safe. Canadian Hydrographic Charts are an 

excellent reference for boaters and are available at www.charts.gc.ca. 

Boating, fishing and swimming above or below a dam or generating station can be very dangerous. For 

your own safety and the safety of those with you, obey all warning signs and stay out of restricted areas.

Kuimba Choir celebrates Spring! 

It’s spring, birds are singing, and so are the singers of Kaslo! Kuimba 

Choir is celebrating spring on May 27 and 28 with a concert 

featuring music from North America, including Canadian folk 

favourites like Four Strong Winds and Northwest Passage, as well 

as some rollicking gospel songs including O Mary Don’t You Weep 

and a barn-burning, show-stopping arrangement of the classic Go 

Down, Moses that will have you out of your seat. We’ve also snuck 

in one African song – arranged by Canadian composer Brian Tate 

– just because we enjoy singing African music so much. Check the
