Daphne’s big day
‘a royal occasion’

Daphne Eva arrived in
New Zealand from Essex
in 1970. And last week
she received a surprise
message from home – a
card from King Charles
and Camilla wishing her
a happy birthday. Daphne
turned 100 last week, an
occasion celebrated at
Radius St Helenas Rest
Home in Barbadoes St
where she lives. Office
manager Ana Bastias said
it was a royal occasion
with high tea and two
chocolate cakes, with her
son John, other residents
and staff all joining in with
the celebration. “It was a
great day, everyone had a
fantastic time,” said Bastias.
“She’s such a character.”
Daphne was overjoyed
by the card from the
royals, and also the one
she received from Prime
Minister Chris Hipkins.

a clean-up
planned

SIXTY FIVE community groups
will take part in Saturday’s
Mother of All Clean Ups –
making it the biggest yet.
Hundreds of people will clean
the Heathcote River, the Estuary,
Lyttelton Harbour Basin and
Avon River.
The first annual
clean-up in 2015
involved only
five community
groups, Avon
Heathcote
Estuary Ihutai
Trust manager
Tanya Jenkins
said.
The trust was
one of the project’s founders.

allocated a waterway and then
will encourage members to get
involved.
The Mt Pleasant Yacht Club
and Ferrymead Rotary Club are
among those taking part.
“It’s all about encouraging
community groups,” Jenkins said.
While the total waste collected
has trended downward from 10.5
tonnes in 2016 to 2.6 tonnes in
2021, the amount of rubbish in
waterways remains an ongoing
issue.

Ballerina’s big dream a step closer

London in June to help make
her dream of becoming a prima
ballerina come true.
The 15-year-old has been
dancing since she was four.
Now, 11 years later, she will
attend the Rambert School of

year worldwide.

of the Royal Ballet in
London, and ballerina Carolina
Cortesi.
In March 2017, Cortesi was
offered a two-year soloist
contract with Plzen Ballet in the
Czech Republic.
The Rambert School summer
class will help Izzy on her
journey to becoming a prima
ballerina – a ballerina who is first
in their company and performs
lead roles.
“My favourite ballets are the
classics, Romeo and Juliet, Swan
Lake and Giselle. So to dance the
lead roles in those ballets would
be an honour,” she said.
“I just want to keep improving,
striving to push my boundaries
and limits.”
Izzy has been to a summer
intensive at the Dutch
National Academy of Ballet in
Amsterdam, making this her
second international trip.
She dances at Anna Lee
School of Dance for 30-35 hours
each week and attends Te Kura
correspondence school.
Izzy’s mornings are dedicated
to schoolwork, but she will dance
from 1-8pm most days.
“My studio is my home, my
happy place,” she said.
“I remember when I was six
and was at my old studio in the
Tai Tapu hall and early Saturday
morning I would have rehearsal,
it was so cold you could see my
breath, but leg warmers and all,
it felt like home, ballet is where I
belong.”
But getting to London will be
no easy feat.
Last Wednesday, Izzy’s family
held a fundraising night, with
members of the Little River
community coming to hear
guest speakers talk about their
life experiences and challenges.
At $35 per person, plus
donations from those who
couldn’t be at the fundraiser,
Izzy and her family raised $1300
for her trip and course fees.
When she was about 12,
Izzy knew she wanted to be a
professional dancer.
She looks up to world-class
ballerinas like Marianela Nunez
of the Royal Ballet.
“She’s just incredible to
watch.”
Another idol is Gillian
Murphy, whom Izzy admires for
her skill – and partly because she
is a fellow redhead.
Izzy’s last competition was
the Alana Hains Australasian
Awards in Wellington.
She placed 25th out of 200 in
her category and was one of the
youngest in the group.
“Being onstage with the lights
and costumes feels amazing and
so rewarding,” she said.
“Having the opportunity
to share my love and passion
with the audience makes all the
training and hours of rehearsals
in pointe shoes all worth it.”

Season finishes
A function and trophy
presentation were held at
Burnside Bowling Club on
Saturday to mark the end
of the season. The club’s
publicity officer Kerrie
Bruce reports
SEVERAL SPECIAL guests were
among the crowd at Burnside’s
annual closing day function.
After the flag was lowered to
mark the end of the summer
bowls season on Saturday, club
patron Mayor Phil Mauger spoke
to members.
He said the club was “a
fantastic asset for the local
neighbourhood and for our
city”.
“The level of success is a result
of having such a strong club.”
Canterbury Charity Hospital
Trust chair Philip Bagshaw and
Dame Sue Bagshaw were
also invited to accept a $600
donation to the hospital.

titles.

women’s player of the year.
Bruce’s highlights included
two Commonwealth
Games bronze medals,
a world champion of
champion women’s singles
gold medal, and gold in
the multi-nations women’s
triples and national pairs.
The Burnside women’s
under-5 singles winner
was Jill Lee who also took
out the Canterbury Centre
champions of champions
women’s under-5 singles.

And A PEnGUIn
Marley
The week started off with Marley, a sweet
1 year old DSH that arrived from the
after-hours clinic with an oblique right
distal humeral fracture, no doubt a run in
with a car. Marley didn’t seem to know he
was in pain. He purred his way through
the physical exam and blood testing,
gobbled up his food and was a delight to
care for.
Marley’s owners adored him but their pet
insurance hadn’t yet kicked in so surgical
referral for a plate and screws was out
of the question. Lucky for Marley, our
new Veterinarian Jack, put his hand up
to repair the fracture with pin and wire
stabilisation. Surgery proceeded without
a hitch and we were rapt with the
post op radiographs. To date, Marley is
doing really well, weight bearing on the
operated leg, although going a little stir
crazy with cage confinement. All going
well, he’ll be watching the birds, climbing
trees again in about 5 weeks time.

Next up was Steve’s second cataract
surgery on another Yellow Eyed Penguin
from the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital.
Steve’s becoming a bit of a gun with bird’s
eyes. It’s a great learning experience for
our team as well as birds have different
requirements under anaesthesia. His first
successful cataract on Mr Sandymount
was a huge success, with his vision being
excellent. Here is a close up of his eye
looking fantastic post surgery.
Max
Lastly we diagnosed FIP ( Feline
Infectious Peritonitis) in our own
special 7 year old ginger “Maximus”.
A real shock for us as FIP is relatively
uncommon and affects usually
younger, pedigree cats. Max didn’t
fit the signalment. He was behaving
weirdly - sleeping in the garage,
growling at Atticus (and us) and then
he completely stopped eating. He also
had intermittent fevers. Max lives for his
tucker so we knew this was serious. We
carried out a series of testing including
blood tests, abdominal ultrasounds,
biopsies and then we got the dreaded
diagnosis.
Thanks to Covid there has been heaps
of development with antiviral drugs and
now we have a drug that can attempt to
beat this usually incurable disease.
We had to specially formulate
Remdesivir for Max and order it in.
72 hours after starting this impressive
drug, Max was eating on his own,
purring and for the first time in months,
and attempting some interaction with
Atticus. Plus he had moved back to
sleeping with us.
A total win.

A Career Highlight on the Horizon
As I write this article, I’m aware that in
a very short time I’ll be participating in
a lifetime career highlight. I’m excited
and just a little nervous, but that’s
appropriate whenever you approach
significant events.
I’m going to be presenting at a conference.
Not unusual for me as I’ve done this on many
occasions over my long tenure, but this time
it’s different.
It’s an international conference for our
company’s brand and it’s taking place in
South Africa, where I’ve learnt they have a
strong presence.
I will present on the main stage to a sellout
audience on 17th May – and here’s my
quandary:
What to share with people whose experiences
may be totally different at a cultural
and business level? How do you create
engagement so that their curiosity is piqued
and how do you maintain that interest for the
duration of the talk so that everyone derives
some definite benefit despite my Kiwi accent
potentially making hard work of things?
In thinking about all of this, I’ve rationalized
that the best place to start is with a process
that I’ve used many times before – and it’s
stood me in good stead whenever a high level
of professionalism is required.
Here’s my simple system.
Resist procrastinating. It never helps to wait
so long that you find yourself in a corner,
desperately looking for inspiration and losing
vital time for fine tuning and practicing. I’ve
never been someone who digs themself into
this particular hole. I prefer to start early and
move incrementally. So, it’s essential I select
a potential topic – and soon – amongst the
numerous suggestions I’ve been given.
The next step is always preparation and
research.
Sure, you’ve settled on a topic, but is what
you have to say the latest information or
interpretation of it? I think of this as currency.
Currency is a concept that requires what
you deliver to be relevant, up-to-date and
engaging.
It’s something I’ve come to respect given
a number of conferences I’ve attended
where often-repeated, outdated ideas were
presented using data shows with no real sense
of purpose other than for a box to be ticked,
and I’d prefer to avoid this for obvious reasons.
Then there’s the timing of everything, hitting
your main points in the correct order, not
relying on notes because they are distracting
for you and your audience, and not going off
topic.
I once went to an event where the speaker
got so far off topic that no one, including the
presenter, knew what was happening.
Lastly, what to wear, given a gal has got to look
good, how to open (I’m thinking Te Reo), what
resources to provide and how to finish well?
There you have it and soon I’m hoping I’ll have
done it!!

after the Covid-19 pandemic to
keep the girls playing together.
They made a strong start to
their fourth season at the
Christchurch Netball Centre,
winning their first game. The
team play St Margaret’s on
Friday.
Graham said she applied
for the ANZ grant to keep the
players together.
“There’s so much happening
in kids’ lives at the moment,
and it’s so important to keep
the girls interested in playing
netball.
“Especially at this age. They’re
all off to intermediate next year
and sport is so important for
their mental and physical wellbeing.”
“We didn’t have bibs for
practices, and it’s great to have
enough balls for everybody. We
are going to donate the pole
pads to the school so the whole
school can use them. It’s a huge
benefit to them which we’re
really appreciative of.”

The event will include a new

“The pick up five campaign is
something people should be doing
all year round,” Jenkins said.
“If we all pick up five pieces
of rubbish . . . that would be
awesome. Then we’ll have the
cleanest city in the country.”

recipes and words of advice on

and chemical use to questioning
alcohol. Here’s a taster.
Chicken drumstick curry
You will need to make the
curry paste first (recipe below).
This is a great paste to have in
the fridge if you want a quick
and easy meal with some bang.
Serves 6
Ingredients
4 Tbsp curry paste (below)
440g can chopped tomatoes, or
fresh
2 Tbsp sesame oil
440g can coconut cream
1 large tsp salt or fish sauce
12 chicken drumsticks
½ cup toasted peanuts
bunch coriander
Directions
Preheat oven to 200 deg C fan
bake.
Mix the curry paste with
tomatoes, oil, coconut cream
and salt in a roasting dish. Add
your chicken pieces and stir
to coat it all. Place in the oven
and cook for 30-40 minutes,
depending on how close together
the drums are.
Let rest for a good 5 minutes.
Garnish with chopped peanuts
and coriander.
You could add different
vegetables to bulk this curry
up, such as cooked potato or
kumara. Throw a few frozen peas
in, perhaps some halved boiled
eggs on top.
Curry paste
It really is worth the effort
to make your own curry paste.
Packed full of all-natural goodness
and none of the bad. Once
it’s done, it lasts for months in
the fridge and you’ll be so stoked
when you’re time-short and want
a quick, easy meal with lots of
flavour. It’s also a great way to
use up coriander roots instead
of tossing them in the bin.
Every part of coriander is edible,
like most plants.
Makes 5 cups
Ingredients
80g fresh chillies, keep seeds if
you like it hot
225g onion, red or white
125g garlic
250g fresh ginger
150g coriander roots
3 Tbsp turmeric (grated fresh is
best but dried will do)
250g coconut oil, melted
1 tbsp fenugreek
2 Tbsp chopped lemongrass
Directions
Chop chillies, peel onions
and garlic, and clean up the
ginger, roots and turmeric if
need be.
Ensure all fresh ingredients are
chopped small to make blending
easier. Also make sure it’s all at
room temperature otherwise
the coconut oil will set hard and
then you’re in trouble.
Put everything into a highpowered
blender and keep
pulsing until you have a smooth
paste.

You will have to keep stopping
the blender and scraping the
sides down. Store in a jar with a
lid in the fridge.
When you are using this paste
in a meal, depending on whether
it’s a dry curry or a cream or
tomato base, don’t forget a salt
element. Fish or soy sauce, or just
salt.
I include a little coconut sugar
when I’m doing a tomato base;
it just adds that little something
extra.

Go-anywhere goliath loaded with luxury
IF A new Toyota Land Cruiser is
on your wish-list but you have a
few extra notes in the bank, the
Lexus LX 500d is the next best
option.
It’s a Land Cruiser on steroids
in terms of specification and
luxury and it sits in a part of the
market that has little competition
in terms of prestige and
ability than, say, Range Rover.
What’s more, it’s an easy decision
to make if you have decided
on Lexus, there are just two
models – F-Sport and Limited
both are priced at $175,900.
As its nomenclature suggests
the F-Sport has design elements
that are a little on the sporty side
– black mesh grille, unique front
and rear bumpers – while inside
there are aluminium centre
console panels and coloured seat
coverings. The Limited has a

The only other real difference
lies with the suspension, the F-
Sport gets what Lexus describes
as performance dampers. In

straight into the Limited, there
was no immediate feeling of
change.
Of course, if you were to
explore all of the driveline settings
and functions that make
the Land Cruiser/LX 500d so
capable, the chassis and suspension
settings would then come
into play.
However, as capable as it is
