report to the Le Mars City Council earlier this year. Taylor said
the bylaw and code changes are minor modifications to keep up
changing laws.
Library bylaws, city ordinances
being updated to reflect changes
BY TOM LAWRENCE
Staff writer
LE MARS — It’s both somewhat
ironic and fitting that an
issue at the Le Mars Public
Library comes down to a matter
of paperwork.
The discovery of some problems
with the library’s bylaws
required the city to do some
work to correct discrepancies
and make corrections. They
were discussed at the May 2
Le Mars City Council meeting
and were the subject of a public
hearing at the meeting set for
noon Tuesday, May 16.
At Tuesday’s meeting, there
were no public comments and
no discussion, with a quick
approval of the first reading
by council members.
The rules now in the city
code do not match up with
state law, a recent review
revealed.
Currently, there are seven
board members, but the current
wording called for eight,
listing seven from within the
city limits and one from outside
the city boundaries. The
bylaws will be changed to state
there should be seven total
members, six from within the
city.
The board members now
serve six-year terms, as the
state code mandates, but the
city code says four years, so
that will be corrected.
Like other city departments,
the library submits an annual
report after the start of the
new year, but that does not
match the Iowa code, the city
code states or the library’s own
bylaws. State law says it should
be delivered 90 days after the
end of the fiscal year, so that
will be the rule going forth, City
Administrator Jason Vacura
said at the May 2 meeting. But
he said the library staff can still
deliver it when it is ready and
when the council requests it.
Library Director Shirley
Taylor said rules evolve and
the library bylaws need to as
well. She has been in charge of
the city book depository since
June 2014.
“We try to update our policies
every few years as recommended
by the State Library
of Iowa as part of the accreditation
program,” Taylor said.
“This year I noticed that over
time some things in the bylaws
were no longer in step with the
Iowa Code and City Code, as
those two things changed over
time.”
offers a planning department,
landscape architects and engineers,
identified areas of the
city for development as far a
residential, business, industrial
and recreation in the city.
Gathering of the information
started in August 2022,
when city leaders brought
together various groups and
organizations to find out what
residents think Le Mars should
look like in 2045.
For those unable to attend
the open house, an online survey
was created on the city’s
website, www.lemarsiowa.
com. People can access the
survey by scrolling down the
first page to “The Latest Scoop”
and click on the Community
Development Website.
The city is accepting input
on the website through Friday,
May 19.
ISG Planner Danielle Propst
said as of May 9, more than 115
people had responded to the
online survey.
She indicated preliminary
priorities noted by the public
are Parks, Trail and Open
Spaces; Downtown; and Housing
(in the order).
A snapshot of favored uses
included sidewalk café, indoor
recreation/community center,
trails, senior housing, and
casual café.
he continued.
“Mike and Cheryl are
community and live with
us. They grew up in Sioux
“I would like to say their
involvement in the community
is summed up by this
Bible verse that I have heard
Mike use … Jeremiah 29:7
“Work for the peace and
was simply giving back to so
many that had contributed so
much to our success. I simply
had the pleasure of leading.”
“It is an honor to get this
award and I have been so
blessed to be able to partner
with my team and be a part
of so many things that are for
the betterment of the community,
as well as those that
we have served,” said Cheryl
of her work with Habitué and
Side by Side Ministries.
As noted, the couple made
the choice to make Le Mars
their home and be a part of
the community.
“It is an honor to be recognized
for our efforts in our
community. Honestly, I am
shocked by the award because
there are so many in our community
that give so much of
their time and talents I don’t
feel like we do any more than
our fair share,” Mike said.
“There are so many good
things happening in Le Mars
and the support of the community
here is tremendous,
which just makes me want to
love and serve alongside of so
many others,” Cheryl added.
During his tenure as CEO
of Wells Enterprises, Mike
has received numerous
awards and honors.
“This is the first recognition
that I (we) have received
since retiring from Wells,” he
said. “It really epitomizes our
desire to see our community
succeed and am honored to
end my career with this award
as its more about who we are
rather than what I do.”
Cheryl noted the couple
has always felt support and
love from their friends and
neighbors.
“The Rotary Club award
speaks loudly about the
things that matter most to
both Mike and I. Our goal
is to always love and serve as
Christ modeled for us while
He walked on the earth, but
we know that we fall short
apart from the grace of God,”
she said.
Finally, the couple was
asked what they like about
living in Le Mars and being a
part of the community.
“The authenticity of the
relationships is refreshing
and when hard times come,
I have seen people come
together and do amazing
things,” Cheryl said. “I love to
call Le Mars home. Home is
a place where you feel loved,
safe, and accepted as you are.
Thank you so much.”
For Mike, it’s the people.
“This community cares for
each other and steps up when
people need it the most,” he
said.
LE MARS — Willow Creek
Golf Course hosted a Class 1A
district golf meet on Monday
with four Plymouth County
teams in attendance. Three of
those schools have advanced to
the state meet following their
finish. Kingsley-Pierson led
the way with a 324 team score.
Gehlen Catholic finished in
second place with a 340. Due to
the fact that Gehlen was playing
on their home course, the third
place team also advanced. That
means Remsen St. Mary’s will
make the trip as they took third
with a 343.
The Panthers had played
both the Red and Black courses
at the Western Valley Conference
tournament championship
the week before. Head
Coach Tim Dirksen said that
was an advantage entering the
day.
“We actually shot our best
score of the year here at the
conference tournament. I think
that helped today out here,”
Dirksen said.
The Panthers had two within
the top five of individuals.
Emerson Pratt was runner-up
on the day with a 74, one stroke
behind Newell-Fonda’s Mason
Dicks, who earned one of the
individual qualifying spots.
Pratt fired a -2 score of 33 on
the Red course. He birdied the
par-5 third and par-4 seventh
and eighth holes. He matched
par on five holes and bogeyed
just one. His second nine score
was a 41 on the par-36 Black
nine. He matched par on four
of those holes and bogeyed the
remaining five.
Vincent Koelling was fifth
with a 78. He shot a 39 on both
sets of nine. He matched par
on five holes on the front nine
and four on the second nine.
He also birdied the par-5 No.
6 hole on Black.
Dirksen said he was confident
in his top two golfers.
“I kind of expected it out
of those two,” Dirksen said.
“They’ve been consistent all
year long and I knew coming in
this morning they were going
to be solid. They were confident
and relaxed and I just had
this feeling with them.”
Jake Utesch was 11th overall
and had the third score for
the Panthers. He shot an 82
on identical 41 scores on each
nine. He matched par four
times on the Red course and
four more times on the Black
course. He also birdied the
par-4 Black No. 2 hole.
Completing the team score
was a 90 from Beau Bubke.
He shot a 48 on the Red nine
with two even-par holes, but
improved to a 42 on the Black
nine with four even-par holes.
Evan Neumann added a 91
score. He shot a 46 on the front
nine which included a birdie on
the par-4 No. 5 Red hole. He
ended with a 45 on the Black
course with four even-par holes
to go along with his two on the
first nine.
SPENCER — The Le Mars Community
boys tennis team competed
in the Class 1A substate tournament
on Friday.
The team opened up against Missouri
River Activities Conference
rival Bishop Heelan. The Bulldogs
were the No. 4 seed in the bracket
while the Crusaders were the No. 5
seed.
Le Mars won the regular season
meeting by a 7-2 score which
featured four singles wins. The
Bulldogs did even better this time
around, winning five of the six singles
matches in order to clinch the
win to advance.
Michael Meis won at No. 1 by a
6-2, 6-0 score over Luka Ernesti. The
No. 2 match was by the same scores
in the other order as Evan Pratt beat
Brady Schultz.
No. 4 singles went to Ian Penne by
a 6-1, 6-2 score over Jack Bousquet.
The bottom two singles matches
went to three sets. Jacob McGill won
at No. 5 over Ikey Scott by a 6-3, 1-6,
6-4 score. Devin DeVall claimed No.
6 by a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 score.
The only loss was at No. 3 as
Caden Wurth fell to Jason Breen
6-2, 7-5.
The Bulldogs advanced to play
top-seeded an No. 4 ranked Spencer
in the next round. The Tigers won
their first round contest 5-0 over
Cherokee.
When Le Mars and Spencer met
in non-conference action earlier in
the season the Tigers won by a 9-0
score. It was a similar outcome this
time around with the Tigers clinching
all of the singles wins necessary
to advance.
At No. 1, Sam Feldmann won a
close 7-6 (7-5) tiebreaker in the first
set over Michael Meis before winning
6-2 in the second set.
Owen Kierscht won by identical
6-1 set scores against Evan Pratt at
No. 2.
The Tigers took No. 3 by a 6-3,
6-1 score as Riley DeWitt defeated
Caden Wurth.
In the No. 4 matchup, Parker
Bergstadt beat Ian Penne 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 6, Gavin Honkomp
defeated Devin DeVall 6-4, 6-0.
The only set win for the Bulldogs
came at No. 5 as Jacob McGill
picked off the second set by a 6-3
score over Quinn Baker. The other
set was a 6-1 win for Baker and he
led the tiebreaker set before the
Tigers clinched the victory with
their fifth singles win.
Le Mars finishes 10-4 in dual
competition.
Spencer advances to play Spirit
Lake in Wednesday’s substate final.
On Saturday, the Le Mars girls
lost 5-1 to Estherville-Lincoln Central
in the first round of their Class
1A regional bracket, ending their
season winless in dual action. Individual
results for that contest were
unavailable.
The Midgets went on to lost 5-2
to Cherokee in the next round.
The Braves advanced to play No.
4 ranked Spirit Lake in the next
round.
team’s other score. He scored
a 44 on the Red course with
two even-par holes, but didn’t
have any on a 54 on the Black
course.
As the team heads to Ames
Golf & Country Club for the 1A
state meet on May 22 and 23,
Dirksen said he wants his team
to bring home a championship.
“We’re not going just to
compete. We’re going to go
win this thing,” Dirksen said.
“I’ve got to have four scores in
the 70s, probably low 70s to
compete down there. There’s
a couple tough teams ahead of
us in the state as far as averages
go, but I think we can compete
with them once we get down
there.”
Kingsley-Pierson ranks in
the top five in 1A in 18 hole
average and adjusted average.
Gehlen Catholic
Gehlen Head Coach Nathan
Carlson said the home course
advantage was important.
“It was nice that we were at
home because we could know
the little nooks and crannies
around everywhere,” Carlson
said. “The grass was not as
pleasant as we had hoped. It
was thick and you could tell
because a lot of the kids here
that shoot low did not shoot
as well as they normally do.
I think it definitely affected
everybody evenly. I think it
made it more even of a playing
field.”
The Jays had two within the
top six on the leaderboard.
Landen Reuter led the team
with a 78. He shot matching
39s on each set of nine holes.
On Red he ended with two
birdies and two even-par holes.
He matched par six times on
Black and also birdied the par-4
No. 1 hole on that nine.
Dawson Barthole ended a
stroke behind his teammate
on the day. He scored a 38 on
the front nine with six evenpars
on the Red course with
the other three holes being +1.
His Black course 41 featured a
birdie on the par-5 No. 6 hole
and four even-par holes.
Gabe Wiltgen had the third
score for the Jays with a 90. He
shot 45s on each set of nine. He
matched par twice on each nine
while adding a birdie on No. 6
Black.
The final score used towards
the team total was a 93 from
Keaton Logan. He shot a 46 on
Red with two even-par holes.
His Black course score was
a 47 with one even-par hole
and then a birdie on the par-3
fourth.
Carson Arens ended with a
95 on splits of 44 and 51. He
had four even-par holes across
the 18-hole tournament.
Landen Kneip ended with an
even 100 on splits of 47 and
53. He birdied the par-3 No. 8
Black hole for his best hole of
the day.
Carlson said the pressure is
now off for the team as they
have reached the state tournament.
He just wants his team to
enjoy the state meet and hopefully
being able to relax more
will lead to good scores.
“I think the major thing
for my kids is just to enjoy
the moment. I know it’s very
stressful and very hard to get
there. Now that we’re there,
we don’t have to qualify for
anything. We can just go there
and we know we’re going to get
two days of golf in. I think just
being there free and just enjoying
yourself is going to be huge
for us because stressing out in
a game like golf can never be
good,” Carlson said.
Remsen St. Mary’s
RSM Head Coach Tim
Osterman said it is nice to be
able to get a full team to state,
adding to an impressive haul
of state qualifying banners in
other sports in recent years.
“There’s been a lot of golfers
who have come through here
the last six years and we’ve
been knocking on the door
a couple different times and
then to finally break through,
that means a lot for the kids,”
Osterman said. “I’m really
excited for the program that
we get there as a team. That’s
a big deal.”
The Hawks were led by
Jaxon Bunkers as he finished
third on the leaderboard with
a 75. His score on Red matched
par with a 35. He birdied a pair
of par-4 holes on the nine,
matched par five times and
finished with bogeys on the
other two holes. He shot a 40
on Black with four even pars
and a birdie on one hole.
“Having guys that are capable
of having a low score like a
75, 78 or 79 on any given day
and really helping you out, that
makes a big difference,” Osterman
said. “Obviously Jaxon’s
75 today makes the difference
over Newell-Fonda.”
Hunter Pick finished with
the team’s next score with an
88. He shot a 43 on Red and
45 on Black with a birdie on
each nine.
Collin Homan was a stroke
behind Pick with an 89. He
ended with a 43 on Red with
five even-par holes. He birdied
Black No. 5 as he finished that
nine with a 46.
Rounding out the team score
was a 91 from Ty Tritz. He shot
a 46 on Red and 45 on Black
with three even-par holes on
each nine.
Colby Penning added a
93 on splits of 45 and 48. He
ended with three even-pars on
the day. Isaiah Gerrietts shot an
Sports Editor
even 100 on splits of 46 and 54
as the team’s six golfer with one
even-par hole on the course.
Osterman said he wants his
team to take the state meet one
stroke at a time.
“I was able to go there with
Derrick and Spencer Schorg
and to see some of those teams,
they’ve got guys that hit 70s like
it’s nothing,” Osterman said.
“So when we get down to that
level, it’s going to be about let’s
just put our best foot forward,
let’s just try to take it one stroke
at a time. After that, whatever
the score is, the score is.”
Akron-Westfield
The Westerners came into
the day as one of the favorites
being the War Eagle Conference
tournament and regular
season dual champions. The
team ended up falling to sixth
with a 352.
Carter Wilken led the team
with an 80. His score ended
up being a stroke behind the
last individual qualifying spot
which went to Woodbury Central’s
Chase Copeland.
Wilken ended with a 39 on
the Red course as he birdied
No. 9, a par-4 hole, and finished
even on four others. He
shot a 41 on Black with five
even-par holes.
The team’s second and third
scores were 90s from Jackson
Marnach and Tatum Wilken.
Marnach shot a 47 on Red with
one even-par hole before finishing
with a 43 on Black with
three even-par holes.
Wilken matched par four
times on Red as he ended with a
42 on that nine. He shot a 48 on
Black with two even-par holes.
One of two 92 tallies shot by
Michael and Matthew Swancutt
was used to complete the
team scoring for the Westerners.
Michael shot a 50 on Red
with two even-par holes and
a 42 on Black with five evens.
Matthew ended with one evenpar
hole on Red as he shot a
45. He picked up three pars on
Black as he shot a 47.
Jackson Neubrand had the
last score for the Westerners
with a 95 on splits of 48 and
47. He matched par once on
each nine.
LE MARS/ROCK VALLEY — The
Le Mars Community soccer teams
ended the regular season with nonconference
wins over Boyden-Hull/
Rock Valley on Friday.
The Lady Bulldogs snapped a losing
streak of five games with a 4-0 win
over the Nighthawks at Jim Lorenzen
Field.
Zoe Wittkop was on the field after
missing most of the second half of the
scored three of the team’s goals in the
game. She took 13 shots in the contest.
Wittkop now has 16 goals this
season.
Metta Skov had the team’s other
goal for the Bulldogs. It was the third
goal of the season for her.
Lexi Hurd competed the shutout
in goal as she made three saves in the
contest. It was just the second shutout
win for the Bulldogs this season,
along with a 5-0 win over MOC-
Floyd Valley in the team’s second
game of the year.
Le Mars improved to 6-10 with the
win. The Nighthawks fell to 1-12 with
the loss.
The Le Mars boys ended a skid of
three losses with a 3-2 overtime win
on the road.
the season.
Josh Vargas and Ike Van Der Brink
had the goals for the Nighthawks.
Le Mars improved to 7-9 with the
win. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley fell to
DES MOINES — Iowa
Secretary of Agriculture Mike
Naig commented Monday on
the Iowa Crop Progress and
Condition Report released
by the USDA National Agricultural
Statistics Service. The
report is released weekly April
through November. Additionally,
the Iowa Department of
Agriculture and Land Stewardship
provides a weather
summary each week during
this time.
“We had unseasonably
warm and wet conditions last
week across most of the state
as several rounds of severe
weather brought measurable
rain, hail, high winds and
reports of 11 weak tornadoes,”
said Secretary Naig. “Farmers
should have a window of
opportunity in the coming
week to make more planting
progress, as forecasts indicate
drier conditions and more seasonal
temperatures.”
The weekly report is also
available on the USDA’s website
at nass.usda.gov.
Crop Report
Warm, but wet, weather
meant Iowa farmers had just
3.6 days suitable for fieldwork
during the week ending May
14, 2023, according to the
USDA, National Agricultural
Statistics Service. The warmth
helped crop emergence this
week; however, the wet conditions
marginally slowed planting
progress. Farmers were still
planting corn, soybeans, and
oats during the dry periods
of the week. Other reports of
interest were concerns for isolated
flooding and for a swath
of large hail across the central
divorced.
Weather Summary
PROVIDED BY JUSTIN GLISAN, PH.D.,
State Climatologist, Iowa
Department of Agriculture and
Land Stewardship
Iowa experienced unseasonably
wet conditions as a very
active storm track brought
several waves of showers and
thunderstorms to Iowa. Multiple
rounds of severe storms
produced large hail, gusty
winds and weak tornadoes
along with heavy rains. Stations
across northern Iowa
registered rain totals of two to
six inches above average. Temperatures
were also unseasonably
warm with departures
from four to 10 degrees east
to west; the statewide average
temperature was 66.9 degrees,
7.7 degrees above normal.
Scattered thunderstorms
moved across northern and
central Iowa on Sunday (7th)
afternoon with strong to severe
storms firing towards the evening
hours. Thunderstorms
consolidated into a severewarned
line in eastern Iowa,
fueled by highs in the upper
80s and low 90s and ample
instability.
A secondary line of severe
thunderstorms formed in
western Iowa and joined a
complex in northeastern Iowa
that dove through southeastern
Iowa into early Monday
(8th) morning. Widespread
reports of large hail up to 2.75
inches and straight-line winds
were found over the southern
half of Iowa with a brief EF-
1-rated tornado in Muscatine
County. Stronger thunderstorms
brought heavier rains
with over 100 stations measuring
an inch or more and
a statewide average rainfall of
0.71 inch; 10 stations observed
at least 2.00 inches with 2.54
inches reported in Le Claire
(Scott County).
Tuesday (9th) was a generally
pleasant day with easterly
winds, mostly clear skies
and temperatures in the 70s.
Wednesday (10th) saw southeasterly
winds build in with
partly cloudy skies in western
Iowa as afternoon highs made
it into the low to mid-80s;
upper 70s were observed east.
Isolated storms formed in
northwestern Iowa and then,
more broadly, across the
Iowa-Minnesota border after
midnight on Thursday (11th).
A separate wave of moderate
rainfall propagated north over
the state through the day as
clouds held highs in the mid-
70s with low 80s interspersed.
Rain totals were above 0.25
inch at most stations with a
statewide average of 0.34 inch;
early morning thunderstorms
trained over Mitchell County
producing a 4.83-inch reading
at Osage.
Showers lingered in northern
Iowa through Friday
(12th) morning as temperatures
gradually climbed into
the upper 70s and low 80s in
western Iowa. A potent lowpressure
center in Nebraska
forced severe thunderstorms
that pushed across the western
border into the evening
hours, leaving behind multiple
reports of strong winds
and torrential downpours; 10
northwest stations measured
more than two inches over
several hours.
A separate line of thunderstorms
brought more rainfall
to central Iowa early on Saturday
(13th) with morning lows
in the 60s. As a warm front
lifted north through the day,
unseasonable warmth, ample
moisture and atmospheric
wind shear popped discrete
supercells in east-central and
northwest Iowa.
Several thunderstorms
put down brief, multi-vortex
tornadoes around Knoxville
(Marion County) with more
reports of weak tornadoes in
Buena Vista, Calhoun and
Pocahontas Counties. Weak
steering flow impeded normal
storm motion with several
slow-moving storms producing
anomalous rainfall rates;
two gauges in Pocahontas
County, located in Varina
and Havelock, observed 4.62
inches and 4.95 inches, respectively.
Statewide totals were highest
over Iowa’s northern onethird
and a pocket of central
Iowa with many stations
reporting over 2.00 inches;
widespread totals between
0.75 and 1.00 inch were also
prevalent. Winds shifted to
the east-northeast into Sunday
(14th) with rain still falling
in northern Iowa as morning
lows held in the 60s south to
low 50s north.
Weekly precipitation totals
ranged from 0.27 inch near
Council Bluffs (Pottawattamie
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
AMES — May is Mental
Health Awareness Month, an
important time to talk about
psychological and emotional
wellbeing. The purpose of this
specially designated month —
recognized in the United States
since 1949 — is to increase
understanding and reduce
stigma about mental health
conditions and challenges.
“Many of us are concerned
about the mental health of our
family, friends, coworkers and
even strangers,” said Mackenzie
DeJong, a human sciences specialist
with Iowa State University
Extension and Outreach.
Statistics from the National
Alliance on Mental Illness show
that:
• 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience
mental illness each year.
• 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience
serious mental illness each
year.
• 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17
experience a mental health disorder
each year.
• 50 percent of all lifetime
mental illness begins by age 14,
and 75 percent by age 24.
• Suicide is the second leading
cause of death among people
aged 10-14.
LIGHTER SIDE
Ask Annie
Baby Blues
Between Friends
by Kirkman
by Sandra Bell-Lundy
WIFE IS STRUGGLING WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER AND TAKING IT OUT ON ME
Dear Annie:My wife and I
have been together for over 13
years. She is a great person who
has issues with bipolar disorder.
I’ve gotten used to it, and
with things being off from time
to time, but I’m not sure how
to handle this last situation.
I knew my work jeans were
really getting worn, but even
though they had holes worn in
the legs, they were still usable
and covered everything that
is not supposed to be seen in
public. But my wife took it
upon herself to start buying
me new jeans -- in fact, three
new pairs of jeans. I appreciate
what she is doing for me, but
this evening we had a blowup.
I was at home, and if I’m
home, I take her to work and
go pick her up when she gets
off. When it was getting close
to the time for me to pick her
up, I took a quick shower and
planned to put on my old
jeans. All I could find in the
laundry were the three new
pairs of jeans. I found out later
that she had thrown out all my
old work jeans.
When I picked her up, I
asked what she had done with
my work pants, and she immediately
got hostile and started
yelling and telling me that I
ANNIE LANE
didn’t have anything that was
worth wearing in my old work
pants and I should have more
respect for myself than to wear
them.
She said I should not wear
clothes with holes in them,
and she refused to calm down
and kept trying to keep the
argument going. I had to just
get in my truck and leave the
house for a while, and then she
called me and said she thought
I needed to come back home.
When I got there, she started
yelling all over again. I told
her she had no reason to be so
loud.
Now, I don’t know if her
bipolar disorder has something
to do with her thinking
that if you are worried about
someone you should yell at
them. I’m running out of ways
to deal with the situation and
her changing moods. Can you
give me any advice? I do love
my wife dearly and don’t want
to let this ruin our relationship.
-- Trying to Understand
Dear Trying to Understand:
First off, it’s not about
the pants. It’s about your
wife’s behavior currently, and
it sounds like throwing away
your favorite pants was your
tipping point. The best thing
to do is speak with your wife
and ask her if she is OK. How is
her treatment program working
with her diagnosis? Is she
taking her medications and
going to therapy?
You might also consider seeing
a therapist who specializes
in bipolar disorder to help you
better understand the disease.
I admire how much you love
your wife and are really trying
to help her.
300 Acres M/L of Unimproved Farmland (OFFERED IN THREE TRACTS)
Section 13 and 14, Pilot Township, Cherokee County, Iowa
(Per Original Government Survey)
PUBLIC AUCTION
LIVE AND ONLINE AUCTION
Online Bidding @ BrockAuction.com & Click on
Friday, May 19th, 2023 @ 10:00 AM
Sale to be held at the Farm Site - Intersection of R. Ave & 570th Street
OFFERED IN THREE TRACTS (Tract 1 - 77.12 Acres : Tract 2 - 78 Acres : Tract 3 - 146.27 Acres)
METHOD OF SALE: The property will be sold with the high bidder having their choice of Tract 1 or 2 or both tracts. In
the event both tracts are taken after the first round, the auction of those 2 tracts is over. In the event only 1 of those
tracts are taken, the remaining tract will be offered. Tract 3 will be sold individually. The tracts will not be combined and
offered as a single unit.
LAND LOCATION: From Cherokee: Go South 3 miles on Highway 59, East 1½ miles on Pilot Rock Road, then go South ½
mile on R. Ave. From Aurelia: Go West 3 miles on 550th St., South 1 mile on S Ave., West 1 mile on 560th St., then go South
¾ mile on R. Ave. From Quimby: Go East 4 miles on Highway 31, North 4½ miles on Highway 59, East 1½ miles on Pilot
Rock Road, then go South ½ mile on R. Ave.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: In this offering there are 3 nice High Quality Cherokee County Farms all laying side
by side and only a couple of miles straight South of Cherokee. The Meylor family is offering them in 3 tracts.
Tract 1 is approx. 77.12 M/L acres, Tract 2 is approx. 78 M/L acres and Tract 3 is approx. 146.27 M/L acres.
These highly productive farms offer the buyer(s) an opportunity to purchase anywhere from 77.12 acres all
the way up to 301.39 acres. It’s really hard today to find such flexibility and to have 3 pieces just next to and
across the road from each other. So, whether you want a small tract or a large one, whatever fits your operation
will be available.
The Cherokee ASCS office has all three tracts combined so the exact acres and figures for the individual
tracts will be delegated by their rules. The total figures show 232 farmland acres which includes a few acres of
Steve and Mary Lundsgaard’s land that will not be included in the new buyers total of approx. acres M/L.
Cropland acres 205.57, with a 168.20-acre corn base with a 184 bu. PLC Yield Index and a 37.37-acre soybean
base with a 57 bu. PLC Yield Index.
The Cherokee County NRCS Office shows the main soil types to be as follows:
Tract 1: Mainly Galva, with a small amount of Colo-Judson and an average weighted CSR II of 87.3
Tract 2: Mainly Galva, with smaller amounts of Steinauer, Colo-Judson, and Everly with a weighted average
CSR II of 83.3.
Tract 3: Mainly Galva, with smaller tracts of Colo-Judson, Steinauer, Everly, Sac and Primghar with a weighted
average CSR II of 80.2.
In today’s modern family farming world, it is almost impossible to find 3 pieces so close together and yet offer
so much flexibility. You can tailor this to custom fit you and your operation. No matter what your intentions are
for the future you get to make the choice. Your family’s
future and your legacy will be determined by the
choices you make today. As you look back in history
and follow its trade record you will see that the families
and operations that are flourishing today are the ones
whose forefathers and mothers took the bold step to
grab the opportunity when it was presented. Yours will
be no different down the road. How you respond will
make all the difference for generations to come. Best of
luck to you all. From all of us at Brock Auction
Company and myself, Bruce Brock. Thank you and For Complete Details, Photos & Video go to
