Season 2 of The Headwaters
The first three podcast episodes are now available online.
The paranormal, old-growth trees, and tall tales of the Basin
are just three of the topics tackled in season two of The Headwaters:
Stories from the Source. Brought to you by Columbia Basin
Trust and hosted by Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine’s
Editor-in-Chief Mitchell Scott, season one of The Headwaters
was a huge success, amassing more than 10,000 downloads.
“People told us they really loved hearing these stories about
where they live,” says Scott. “So we headed back out on the road
for another year, and we gathered more.”
Each episode is based on a theme, which is written, produced,
and recorded in the Basin using journalists, writers, musicians,
and designers exclusively from the region. Three new episodes

were released this morning, and one episode a week will drop
throughout May and June.
“We know the love that people feel for the Columbia Basin
region, so it’s no surprise that unique stories that celebrate the
incredible people and places here are proving to be a hit with
them, too,” said Delphi Hoodicoff, Director, Communications,
Columbia Basin Trust. “We’re excited to launch this second
season, which will once again share stories about what makes
this area such a great place to live, work and play. Thank you to
Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine and all those who have
helped make the podcast a success.”

L.V. Rogers
L.V. Rogers is well-known to locals as the
name of the high school, but the story of the
man behind the name may not be as familiar.
Historians, Patricia and Robert Malcolmson
shed some light on this local historical figure
with a presentation and launch of their new
booklet, L.V. Rogers: The Man Behind the
Name at the Nelson Library on May 31 at 7
pm.
L.V. Rogers: The Man Behind the Name tells
the story of Rogers’ life, from his birth to an
unwed teenager in England, his passage across
the Atlantic on his own as a five-year-old, and
life with a farm family in Eastern Ontario.
Rogers’ went on to graduate from Queen’s
University, teach in British Columbia, run for
elected office, and serve as the principal of Nelson’s high school
for almost 25 years. Rogers’ was widely admired, loved by his
students, respected by other teachers, and praised by school
inspectors. Robert says, “Our goal for the
evening is not only to recount his exceptional
life but also to provide readers with
a glimpse into the process of historical discovery.
We hope to inspire a deeper appreciation
for local history and the individuals
who have shaped our communities”.
Patricia and Robert Malcolmson are
social historians and have authored and
edited over twenty books, most of which
focus on English society since 1700. Their
recent works include editions of diaries
written during the Second World War,
including The View from the Corner Shop
and A Nurse’s War. Currently, they are
working on a social history of the South
Okanagan between about 1920 and 1950.
Copies of L.V. Rogers: The Man Behind the Name will be
available by donation.

Larry was born on April 28,
1936, in the Kaslo Victorian
Hospital. He passed away
peacefully on April 17, 2023,
in the Kootenay Lake Hospital
in Nelson after a ten-year battle
with cancer.
Larry was born to Malcolm and
Mae (Dinney) Greenlaw. He
was raised by his mother and
stepfather, John Greenlaw, after
the tragic passing of Malcolm
when Larry was a child. Larry
survived the loss of his siblings
Margaret and Jack.
Growing up in Howser and
Kaslo, he met and married Coriene Frances Collier
on July 1, 1957. They had two children, Ron and
Dolores, and after living in Howser and starting a
store there, they moved their business to Meadow
Creek, where they continued until their retirement.
Their marriage stood the test of time, nearly 66

in any project that came up
from Lardeau Lew Days to
establishing and maintaining
parks for family and community
use. His passion for the
people of the Lardeau Valley
also inspired him to work as a
Director of the Regional District
of Central Kootenay for
12 years. He was an involved
loving father to his children
and grandson. In the end, what
concerned him the most about
his illness was the thought
of being separated from
those he loved, his family, many friends, and his
beloved valley.
Our loving father will be greatly missed by his wife
Coriene, son Ron (Marlene), daughter Dolores
(Rhoalle), his grandson Colin, nieces, nephews,
other family members, and many friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Lardeau Valley Community Hall on June 10, 2023, at 1:00 pm.

Selkirk College Annual Awards
Student success at Selkirk College is not achieved in isolation
and four individuals who have helped bolster outcomes are
being recognized for their guidance on the learning journey.
The college’s Board of Governors held its annual awards
luncheon on the day after Convocation 2023 in late-April
to acknowledge vital contributions. This year’s recipients
include an Indigenous forest sector leader, a retired psychology
instructor, an alumni who is known across Canada for her
academic work in youth physical activity and a Sinixt elder
who has put it all on the line to get recognition for the rights of
his people. Distinguished Alumni Lennard Joe, Distinguished
Alumni Dr. Laurene Rehman, Distinguished Educator Monica
Vogler and recipient of an Honorary Diploma in Liberal Arts
Robert Watt are this year’s group of eminent recipients.
“The graduates from the Class of 2023 will contribute their
knowledge, skills and training in a multitude of ways that will
provide them personal fulfilment and make us proud,” says
Margaret Sutherland, chair of the college’s Board of Governors.
“Helping tie all of this together each spring, the awards
are a way to recognize remarkable individuals who reflect the
college’s core values of community, access, respect and excellence.
It takes outstanding instructors, shining alumni examples
and committed community supporters to empower and
inspire today’s learners.”
The Board of Governors is comprised of external members
who reflect the various sectors of the community served by the
college and several internal members representing students,
faculty, support staff and the president. Board members play
an important role in college governance and are trustees of the
public interest.
The four recipients now join more than two decades
of Board of Governors award recipients who continue to
enhance the educational journeys of students and build stronger
communities.

4 Seasons of Indigenous Learning
Local opportunity to deepen Indigenous knowledge and
understanding After a successful pilot program offered to
nearly 4000 people, the Columbia Basin Environmental Education
Network (CBEEN), in partnership with forty organizations,
has opened early bird registration for a new year-long
learning opportunity starting this fall. This will bring together
ten Indigenous presenters who will share knowledge and
encourage learners to deepen their understanding of Indigenous
culture, history, knowledge and perspectives. Local
Indigenous presenters include Sophie Pierre, Bonnie Harvey,
Dr. Christopher Horsethief, Smokii Sumac, and Nasuʔkin
(Chief) Joe Pierre. From further afield, well-known Indigenous
speakers include Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer, Dr. Niigaan
Sinclair, Kevin Lamoureux, Doug Anderson and Ariana
Roundpoint. Jenna Jasek, co-founder of this initiative, and
VP for Indigenous Learning and Equity for Rocky Mountain
School District No. 6, shared that “Hearing Indigenous People’s
voices and personal experiences is hugely impactful and
validates the urgency of Truth and Reconciliation and putting
the 94 Calls of Action, into action.” These monthly virtual presentations
will be grounded in self-paced learning modules.
For those just starting out, Season 1: Foundations of Learning
focuses on topics such as colonialism, racism, residential
schools, reconciliation, and restitution. For those who have
already taken this pilot program, Season 2: Learning from the
Land will be made available to deepen this learning. In addition
to learning modules and virtual presentations, both seasons
will offer additional resources, learning extensions and
access to a community of learners from across the Columbia
Basin, and beyond. This initiative is offered as acknowledgement
that to authentically undertake a personal learning journey
towards Truth and Reconciliation, it takes more than just
a day or month each year, but should be ongoing.

Passing of the Torch at The Langham
The Langham
Cultural Society
has announced
the hiring of a
new executive
director. Recent
Kaslo resident
Charissa Hoppenbrouwers
will succeed outgoing
ED Paul
Grace-Campbell.
Hoppenbrouwers
brings a
wealth of nonprofit
management
experience
to the Langham.
Originally
from Edmonton,
Alberta she
spent the last
decade working
in non-profits,
building leadership
experience,
volunteering on
boards and most
recently starting
her own consulting business providing professional services for
non-profit and charitable organizations.
“Having recently moved to Kaslo, I am excited to have a role
that will allow me to engage further with our unique community.”
says Hoppenbrouwers. “The Langham ED position is an
excellent opportunity for me to work in an exciting role for such
an important, dynamic and beloved community institution. I
look forward to applying my skills and experience to continue all
the great programming and to help expand the Langham’s scope
and influence.”
After six-and-a-half years at the helm, departing ED
Grace-Campbell leaves behind a robust and diverse community
arts organization. During his tenure he secured funding for and
oversaw the largest set of building renovations since the Langham’s
original rescue in the mid-1970s. Grace-Campbell steadily
increased operational revenues and staff remuneration over his
time, while also broadening programming into new areas. He
also successfully guided the organization through the difficult
years of the pandemic.
“The last few years were certainly challenging, aborting some
great initiatives we had in the works. But it also lead to new creative
projects, such as producing online content and developing
the popular Kaslo Summer Music Series, which continue to this
day. Ultimately, I think the Langham has emerged as a more
accessible and diverse arts organization.” says Grace-Campbell.
“I am grateful to the incredible staff, wonderful boards and
dedicated volunteers I’ve had the privilege to work with over the
years, with a special shout out to Langham Curator Seathra Bell
who has consistently done such excellent work in our art galleries.
It’s truly been an honour.”
Hoppenbrouwers will spend June orienting with Grace-Campbell,
and then take the reins beginning July 1st.

Kaslo May Days Champs, again.!
The Kaslo Screeners, formed in 1981, is the longest running
active ball team in Kaslo and boasts the oldest average aged
team as well. They have been participating in the Annual May
Days for 42 years, with teams from around the West Kootenay.
In the last 10 or so years, Kaslo has fielded most of the
teams itself – 6 of 8 recently. Over time, just about every team
has earned the bragging rights and Champ title, at least once,
none more then the Kaslo Screeners have.

Kaslo Student Graduates RMC
Lt. Helen Hawes has successfully graduated from the Royal
Military College of Canada (RMC), with a bachelor’s degree
in English, Culture, and Communications, and received a
Commission Script in the name of His Majesty to pursue
a career as a Public Affairs Officer in the Canadian Armed
Forces (CAF).
Hawes, amongst nearly 250 fellow students, has completed
a challenging academic program while meeting the highest
military standards, and is now well equipped to lead and
excel in the profession of arms in the service of Canada.

Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a Qualified Professional
performing soil sampling, obtaining government authorization

be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two
major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres
lost from the pulping process and surplus bacteria from the
wastewater biological treatment facility. Wood fibres enhance
soil moisture retention and bacteria are a good source of soil
nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating
Celgrow into their soil.
