From the beginning, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have fascinated
tinkerers as a platform for exploring novel engines. In 1971, SRA
International reported results of a study of UAV-related technologies
incorporating a Triggered Isomer Heat Exchanger (TIHE).
The idea of TIHE is to bombard a nuclear isomer, typically hafnium,
with x-rays to force a portion of the material's higher energy protons
and neutrons to fall to a more stable lower-energy state, releasing heat
energy as a by-product. In this reaction, which has been called
quantum nucleonics, the energy released could be used to heat the
compressed air passed into a normal jet turbine.
A 2003 news report stated that the U.S. Air Force Research
Laboratory had commissioned two feasibility studies to equip a
Northrop-Grumman Global Hawk with such an engine. If it worked, the
engine would be able to fly continuously for months on end. No
practical results have been reported to date.
