From <strong>the</strong> beginning, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have fascinated<br />

tinkerers as a plat<strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> exploring novel <strong>engine</strong>s. In 1971, SRA<br />

International reported results of a study of UAV-related technologies<br />

incorporating a Triggered Isomer Heat Exchanger (TIHE).<br />

The idea of TIHE is to bombard a nuclear isomer, typically hafnium,<br />

with x-rays to <strong>for</strong>ce a portion of <strong>the</strong> material's higher energy protons<br />

and neutrons to fall to a more stable lower-energy state, releasing heat<br />

energy as a by-product. In this reaction, which has been called<br />

quantum nucleonics, <strong>the</strong> energy released could be used to heat <strong>the</strong><br />

compressed air passed into a normal jet turbine.<br />

A 2003 news report stated that <strong>the</strong> U.S. Air Force Research<br />

Laboratory had commissioned two feasibility studies to equip a<br />

Northrop-Grumman Global Hawk with such an <strong>engine</strong>. If it worked, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>engine</strong> would be able to fly continuously <strong>for</strong> months on end. No<br />

practical results have been reported to date.<br />
