Auxiliary members are hoping
to increase their numbers of
volunteers to help with stalls
Sue Heins elected new Mayor
Councillor Sue Heins has been elected the
new Mayor of the Northern Beaches. Council
voted for the position at an Extraordinary Meeting
in May, following Michael Regan’s resignation
from the role. A second May
meeting saw Councillor David
Walton elected as Deputy Mayor.
Cr Heins, who represents the
Curl Curl Ward, was first elected
to Council in 2012. She will hold
the position of Mayor for four
months before the next Mayoral
election is held in September.
Cr Heins has lived and worked
on the Northern Beaches for
more than 25 years. She has supported
the local small business
community passionately for
many years, running networking
events and facilitating mentoring
programs.
Cr Heins is also involved
with several charities and is
currently Chairperson of Women & Children
First (domestic violence services) and Women’s
Healing Sanctuary. In 2015, Cr Heins received
the Minister’s Award for Women in Local Government
for her outstanding contributions to
Council and the community.
New-Mayor Heins acknowledged the work
of former Mayor Michael Regan, who has been
elected the Member for Wakehurst in the NSW
State Parliament, and said she
was honoured to accept the role.
“I am looking forward to collaborating
with my fellow Councillors
and thrilled to serve the
Northern Beaches community in
this new role,” she said.
Councillor Rory Amon also
submitted his resignation from
Northern Beaches Council.
Council is consulting with the
NSW Electoral Commission for a
countback of the ballot papers
to fill the vacancy in the Pittwater
Ward, with the new Councillor
likely to be sworn in in July.
New Deputy Mayor David Walton
was previously a Police Officer,
Detective and Commander
of the Northern Beaches Local Area Command,
where he was awarded the NSW Police and
National Police Medals.
The position of Deputy is a 12-month appointment
and is peer voted annually.
