Tennis club aims for two new courts
• By Heidi Slade
VACANT RED Zone land could be
used by the Sumner Tennis and Squash
Club for two new tennis courts, which
would be open to the public.
The courts would go in on the corner
of Nayland St and Heberden Ave.
The courts, which would include
landscaping and fencing, are expected
to cost about $250,000.
The club intends to cover costs
through existing funds, fundraising
and potential funding applications.
“We’re lucky to have a bit of money in
the bank,” club treasurer Nelson Glass
said.
The additional courts would help
the club clear its waitlist and create
more space for its large events like
tournaments. It would also provide
free courts for the community to use.
Last week the club asked the city
council if it could lease the land longterm.
“It looks like we can get the land,”
Glass said.
The club will now consult with
its members and work towards a
definitive plan for the project.
