WELCOME

As our summer gives way to fall routines, welcome back,

or welcome to CLA for the first time.

I am thrilled that you are here and anticipate that this fall

will be a meaningful one for you. This magazine is a powerful

illustration of who CLA is, what CLA is about and WHY.

Over the past two years we have focused our purposes and

clearly defined our objectives. Our mission is clear. We are

“Joining God in transforming our lives, neighbourhood, nation

and world”. We will do this in a dynamic partnership

with the Spirit. I invite you to join us.

Acts 2 describes a church fully engaged in the activities

of Christ. It was a charismatic people group. Filled with

the Spirit they met together, worshiped God and made him

known. Church was not a building it was a family. The family

loved each other and was on a common mission. This is my

prayer for CLA. The essentials of the gathering community,

The Church, have focused on six things for over 2,000

years. May these elements be part of your Christian experience

this autumn.

you to inspirational Gatherings, purposeful Growth, new occasions

to Serve and a heart filled to Go. I believe the Connecting

Points offered by Christian Life Assembly will help

you move towards the kind of spiritual life God describes

in the New Testament. My hope and anticipation is high for

the fall ministry season. Come join us!

For those who are new to CLA please take time to

join us at the Welcome to Church Party. After that, check

out the Alpha and Discovery Courses. For those who have

completed both Alpha and Discovery, we encourage you to

make sure you attend the Transformation weekend and the

Spirit Filled Life course.

For those who have been around CLA for a while, this

fall we are launching 6 week “pop up” neighbourhood

groups. Join one! Meet your CLA neighbours and strategize

about reaching your sphere of influence with love and

good deeds.

Thanks for taking time to deepen your faith through

community.

• God’s Word

• Prayer

• Evangelism

As you read the stories, hear about opportunities, and

ponder God’s call for you to connect, may the Spirit guide

GATHER

because of Christ’s resurrection.

Christianity cannot be lived in isolation. We gather because it unites our hearts in one

common belief in Jesus Christ. As we celebrate together, we sing, pray, hear God’s Word

and regularly participate in the Lord’s Supper and baptism as instructed in the New Testament.

We meet to encourage each other to live out our faith as we are sent out.

GROW

because of Christ in us.

The Bible tells us in Colossians 1:27 that Christ in you is the hope of glory! How could

we not be transformed when God lives in us? As we grow in our awareness of God’s

presence in and through us, our lives reflect Him in even greater ways. We’re all called

to growth, and growth happens best together.

SERVE

because of Christ’s sacrifice.

Christ’s own sacrifice compels us to get out of our own story and into the story of

others. Jesus calls us to serve and not sit, to sacrifice our personal time, gifts and resources

to see others transformed by the gospel. We lead and are not just led, we feed

and are not just fed. We find meaning and purpose in choosing to serve.

GO

because of Christ’s love.

We are compelled to reach out because of Christ’s love within us. At the heart of a

missional church is the desire to bring Christ into our sphere of influence, to be the salt

of the earth and a light on a hill. Yet, it does not stop there. CLA has a special call to

our nation and world. We pray, we love, we give, we represent Christ here and globally.

SUNDAYS

Why do we gather?

Each week we gather as a Church, to grow closer to God through great teaching, to focus our hearts through worship on the

God who gives us life. We grow together as a community as we are challenged to serve our community, our city, our country,

our world. We are united in seeking God and serving together.

What should I expect?

Our services usually last about 90 minutes. They include music, an opportunity for prayer, and 30-35 minutes of relevant, Bible-based

teaching. From the time you enter the parking lot, signs will clearly mark the way to our main auditorium. Once in

the building, visit the Guest Services desk and we will help you find a seat and answer any questions you may have. We want

to serve you.

WELCOME TO CHURCH PARTY

A great place to meet people, meet key leaders, and see

what life in our church looks like. Look for the next Welcome

to Church Party at clachurch.com/community

We would love to have you join us for lunch.

DISCOVERY

Three times a year (fall, winter and spring) Pastor Derrick

and Sara-Lee host and lead the Discovery Class. The course

is an opportunity to meet new people, get to know the

Hamres and to hear about God’s unique call for CLA. Those

who attend are often new to our church or checking out

CLA to see if it is where God wants them to be. However,

each semester, there are also people who have been at CLA

for many years and simply want to be better acquainted

with their pastor and/or to connect with new people. It’s a

perfect refresher to remind people of our mission and values.

It is a wonderful environment. Each week an amazing

dessert is shared along with coffee and tea. The informal

setting is perfect for a relational orientation to Christian Life

Assembly. Discovery Class is a prerequisite for membership.

It is a place to take your spiritual gifts test and learn

how God has made you to be a blessing to His Church. It

is a 6-week course. Go to clachurch.com/community to see

LIFE GROUPS

Life Groups are the best way for anyone in CLA to connect,

grow and go deeper into a life that brings impact to our

world. We have a variety of groups that meet all around

the Lower Mainland at different times throughout the week.

Each of our groups are unique, but all are focused on cultivating

real community, growing spiritually and reaching out

in some way. Weather you’d like to find a group that fits for

you, or would be interested in helping host or lead a group,

we’d love to hear from you so we can help!

NEW ON STAFF

ROB BEDARD

ASSOCIATE PASTOR, SERVE

At 14 years old, I began following Jesus. But it was years later

that I realized how well my Ottawa-area home church, Woodvale

Pentecostal Church, taught and modelled that knowing

and loving Jesus are inseparable from serving Jesus. This

truth both formed and informed my life and leadership.

Months after beginning to walk with Jesus, I met and fell in

love with my future wife, Lorinda. In August, 1990 I married the

love of my life! We are extremely proud parents of two grown

sons, Cameron and Stephen. In July 2018, we welcomed to our

family a daughter-in-law, Stephen’s lovely bride, Lisa.

I pastored youth in Ontario, and served as District Ministries

Director in the Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario

District Office of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada,

also serving as Lead Pastor in Manitoba and on Vancouver

Island. After completing higher education specializing

in leadership, I sensed God’s call to assist a large church in

three specific areas: volunteer leadership development; a

School of Ministry; and staff leadership development.

Before CLA, I served as Leadership Development Pastor

at Beulah Alliance Church in Edmonton, Alberta. Fostering a

serving culture, I focused on the first of three areas I believed

God had called me into: leadership development of volunteers.

I am now poised to fulfill God’s call on my life and ministry

at CLA, joining the pastoral ranks as Associate Pastor

(Serve), to help foster a serving culture, develop volunteer

leaders, retool CLA’s School of Ministry, and develop our staff.

What drives my ministry is a deep-seated conviction that

all believers are commissioned by God to develop both spiritually

and in service to God, His church and His world. My

ministry mission is deeply rooted in the Ephesians 4 Mandate:

Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the

evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his

people for works of service, so that the body of

Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the

faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and

become mature, attaining to the whole measure of

the fullness of Christ. (Eph: 4:11-13)

Rob & Lorinda Bedard

In faithful service,

PASTOR ROB BEDARD

MARK COLWELL

MAPLE RIDGE CAMPUS PASTOR

Following Christ is an incredible journey! June 2018 marked my

25th year in pastoral ministry, and as our family transitions into

CLA, we know Jesus has given us a new assignment in a beautiful

destination. My wife, Jenni, and I began our journey together

in Paris, Ontario, cutting our teeth in small town ministry, assisting

in many areas and learning to build disciples and leaders.

We followed our lead pastor to Goderich, Ontario for two additional

years before being summoned to our home church in

Windsor in late 1999. For the next seven-plus years, we invested

Mark & Jenni Colwell

in youth and young adults, built a school of ministry and developed

leaders. By the end of that time we were a family of six!

I served as the District Youth Ministries Director for the

Western Ontario District in Burlington from 2007-2018, giving

passion to the rising generation of leaders and students.

Coaching, preaching, training and serving has occupied most

of my time. It has been a joy to preside over hundreds of

moments watching God move in the lives of pastors and the

students they serve. As a father of four, it has been a gift to

include my family in many of those moments and watch them

As I consider the role of Campus Pastor at Maple Ridge

and serving on the MLT at CLA, my heart is excited about

my own growth as a leader, and the opportunity to lead

others to discover the journey Christ has for their lives. I

believe there is an army of believers in our church who will

respond to investment and challenge in a way that enables

them to discover the life God has rescued them for! Thank

you for welcoming us to the CLA family!

grow. I have had a front row seat as Jenni flourished in ministry

to children and families. God has afforded us opportunity

to be changed and lead others to transformation in Christ.

Peace be with you,

PASTOR MARK COLWELL

JENNI COLWELL

FAMILY LIFE PASTOR

Mark and I, along with our children, look forward to doing

ministry as a whole family. What a privilege it is to team up

together to serve the Lord. I am also passionate about championing

your family to be all that God has called them to be. It

I believe we will raise a generation of children who:

I believe that children are not the church of tomorrow –

CHURCH

Life Groups and deeper community for you this fall.

BY MIKE BIDELL, ASSOCIATE PASTOR, GROW

CLACHURCH.COM

Don’t you think Acts chapter 2 paints a compelling picture of church? In churches like

ours, our attention usually goes first to the portrait of a gathering where the Spirit is

experienced in power, or to the story of the gospel making a profound impact as thousands

respond. We read these stories and our hearts cry, “please God, here too.” And

that should be our prayer! But how did the momentum in the first two stories in Acts 2

turn into a movement that, within years, turned the world upside down (Acts 17.6)? The

answer lies in the third story; in fact the Church of then and now would be incomplete

without Acts 2.42-47. The Spirit-empowered, gospel-moved, world-changing Church

that burst into life in the first two stories is sustained, nurtured and multiplied in kitchens

and living rooms. The Church was devoted to being together in each other’s homes

regularly. They prayed. They were in the Word. They cared generously. They grew. They

ate together. On the weekends, they all gathered together for worship, but on the

weekdays, they were scattered everywhere as communities on mission. And this—the

Acts 2:1-47, all three stories—is the kind of church we dream of for here and now as well!

YOU WERE CREATED FOR DEEPER COMMUNITY

In Genesis, God says that it’s not good for people to be alone. Do you realize that He

says this before the fall of mankind? We don’t need community just because we’re

broken, but because we were created for it with perfect intention.

This year it is important for each of us to wake up to our need for community,

and to the fact that community needs you. Acts 2.42 says the early church was devoted

to fellowship. Fellowship wasn’t just socializing with friends or spending time

with your family. It was a devotion to growing together with people in the church.

Many may have family that live nearby, but you also have a family outside of your

biological one. That family needs you, and you need it.

BUSYNESS IS THE MOST COMMON OBSTACLE

Up until this point, many of us will agree with almost every idea shared in this article.

But will you actually make a decision that produces change toward deeper

community this fall? Among the myriad of reasons like fear of the unknown, a bad

past experience, or indifference that could keep us from connecting in deeper community,

our culture esteems one obstacle above all: busyness. We glorify it. Some

feel trapped by it. Some celebrate it. Whatever busyness is to us, it gets in the way

off deeper community, and ultimately in the way of the transformation we could see

in our lives and neighbourhoods. Sobering thought.

What if this fall you rebelled against the god of busyness?

What if you postponed something?

What if you cancelled something?

What if you sacrificed a few important things as worship to God in order to create

time and space for something even more important?

The community you were created for and the church we dream of could be on

the other side of a few courageous decisions you make this fall.

PLAYING WITH A FULL DECK

BY DERRICK HAMRE, LEAD PASTOR

Gather | Grow | Serve | Go

There is an English colloquialism “playing with a full deck.”

It seems to indicate when someone is fully mentally alert

or not. One certainly wants to be “playing with a full deck”

and it would be disturbing if someone thought we weren’t!

I assume the roots of the saying go back to card playing,

something Pentecostals know nothing about. However, I anticipate

it is extremely important to play a card game with

all the important cards available to the dealer and players.

As plans come into place for the autumn season of

church ministry at Christian Life Assembly, I feel like we are

really “playing with a full deck”. All the key elements are

now in place to accentuate our mission to revitalize, disciple

and reach out in new ways. I’m very excited to see the arrival

of Pastor Mark Colwell in our Maple Ridge Campus. His wife

Jenni has become the new Kids Ministry and Family Ministries

Director in Langley. In addition to the Colwells, Pastor

Rob Bedard joins us to become the Serve Pastor. He is excited

to help us deepen our culture of volunteer-ism and to

bring leadership development to both volunteers and staff.

In the spring of 2017 the leadership of CLA released a

revitalized mission statement, “Joining God in transforming

our lives, neighbourhoods, nation and world”. For 80 years,

our mandate has been to bring Spirit transformation to people.

It’s the DNA of who we are and it gives us a clear roadmap

for the future. As important as the mission statement

was for staff, leaders, volunteers and congregation, we also

articulated a critical strategy. The fourfold ministry strategy,

how we were going to bring transformation, was pivotal. We

will work together to implement transformation by:

1. Gathering

2. Growing

3. Serving

4. Going

These four words represent the New Testament approach

to our Kingdom work. Each aspect of ministry had expressions

that both deepened the church and allowed it to

reach beyond itself into a culture in need. Each of these

strategies are cheerlead by a key pastor who is responsible

for developing the areas in all our expressions. Let me introduce

you to the strategy overseers who will work with me

to bring about Kingdom “fruitfulness”.

1. Pastor Marty Mittelstaedt – Gather

2. Pastor Mike Bidell – Grow

3. Pastor Rob Bedard – Serve

4. Pastor Steve Nicholson – Go

Take some time to hear from each of them in this magazine,

and they will be featured on our Kick off Sunday. They will

help CLA shape our future and accomplish our mission.

GATHER

BY MARTY MITTELSTAEDT, ASSOCIATE PASTOR, GATHER

When one grows up in the church, it’s easy to take for granted

the value there is in regularly joining together as a community

to celebrate our faith in Jesus. Many of us have heard

the scripture verse quoted that we should “not give up meeting

together.” This comes from the book of Hebrews, which

was written to believers who it appears had let their faith

grow a little stale. The writer makes the point that meeting

together will help reignite what they believe about Christ.

We believe gathering is an essential aspect of the Christian

life. It’s a way to regain perspective of the fact that we

are part of a greater story. God’s story. It is a way we are reminded

that we are not alone in the complexities of life. It is

where we communicate, and where communion takes place.

When I look across our auditorium, I see a single mom

with her teenage son, a young man in a wheelchair, a couple

that has been married for over 60 years, a newly arrived immigrant

to our great country, a recovering addict and many,

many more. Each has their own unique story to tell. Yet, we

are all together for the same reason – to celebrate Christ’s

My role is simply to help create an environment where communication

and communion can take place. We communicate

truth through song and preaching. We communicate

our values through video and stories. That is why we commune.

This is where our souls are fed, with a God-fullness

we get from worship and word infused by the Holy Spirit.

This fall we look forward to more God-infused moments

in our weekly services, worship and prayer nights. We encourage

your participation in these gatherings, and your involvement.

Every Sunday, it takes approximately 150 volunteers

to create the environment where communication and

communion can take place, from greeting to teaching to

focusing a camera. There is something for everyone to do,

from highly skilled to just saying hi. You can make a difference

in helping create an environment where our gathering

takes on significant meaning in people’s lives.

Let’s not give up meeting together, but encourage

each other (Hebrews 10:25).

to the fullest through Jesus.

GROW

BY MIKE BIDELL, ASSOCIATE PASTOR, GROW

Can you imagine not growing for the rest of your Christian

life? Not only would that be dull, it would be disobedience!

Jesus’ final words to His followers are “go into all the world

and make disciples…” (Matthew 28:19)

We know making other disciples is part of what each one

of us is called to (ask yourself: ‘Who am I discipling?’). It also

means this great commission is intricately connected to a

life of witness as Jesus says “go” (ask yourself: ‘Who am I

reaching?’). But both of these imply that we are also being

discipled (ask yourself: ‘What will I do to keep growing?’).

I get the joy of helping form environments and pathways

at CLA that give you the opportunity to Grow. My mandate

is developing Spirit-filled disciples who will grow in relationship

with God, in Christ-like character, and in living missionally.

I get to work with the staff and teams that lead other areas

in the essentials of discipleship through their ministries.

Discipleship can happen in all kinds of ways, but we

We’re giving extra emphasis right now to your opportunity

to grow with others in a context that feels more and more

like a family on mission. We have several Life Groups with

room for you. Or if you’re more inclined to try a short-term

experience first, check out one of our fall “Pop-Up” Groups.

We want everyone in CLA to benefit from encountering

God through one of our Transformation Weekends. These

two-day events are all about going deeper into God’s love,

freedom and power – something we all need! I hope you will

plan to join our next one, November 16 & 17.

SERVE

BY ROB BEDARD, ASSOCIATE PASTOR, SERVE

Associate Pastor, Serve is a new role at CLA, and it will

undoubtedly flex and form in the months and years ahead.

Such creative, pioneering opportunities are, for me, extremely

exhilarating.

“Joining God in transforming our lives, neighbourhoods,

nation and world.” Our pastoral team is convinced the best

strategy for accomplishing this mission is by calling all in CLA

to Gather, Grow, Serve and Go. Through CLA’s recent visioning

process, serving was deemed necessary to properly support

and undergird all that we do as a church. Look behind and

look beneath CLA’s many Gather, Grow and Go initiatives and

you will find hundreds of those who Serve – volunteers whom

we recognize need ongoing, intentional transformation.

Followers of Jesus must recognize that God’s call to

know and love Him is inseparable from His call to also serve

Him. In other words, every Jesus-follower is called to serve

Jesus by serving others.

As your new Associate Pastor, Serve, my first steps will be:

2. Assist CLA’s pastors and staff in fostering, when and

where needed, a healthy serve culture.

3. Through gauging the state of our present volunteer workforce,

and only after much prayer, thought and discussion,

craft a volunteer leadership pipeline conducive to supporting

our anticipated volunteer revolution throughout CLA.

4. Partner with others in rethinking, retooling and relaunching

CLA’s School of Ministry to better facilitate

the robust development of more volunteers and teams.

5. Strategize and develop systems and initiatives to propel

ongoing, intentional development of staff members

and teams.

My prayer is this: Heavenly Father, please remind us anew

that many of our greatest resources are our volunteers. Jesus,

like you did with your disciples, please help us equip

your people to serve how and where you have uniquely

called, gifted and empowered them. Holy Spirit, may you

transform our lives, neighbourhoods, nation and world.

1. Measure and assess the breadth and health of all volunteers

in CLA’s many ministries.

BY STEVE NICHOLSON, MISSIONS DIRECTOR, GO

Missions has long been synonymous with CLA’s identity

as a church. Our rich heritage of Missions dates back to

the inception of our church 80 years ago, when two ladies

had a vision to reach the community of Langley. It has since

grown to encompass our nation and many regions of the

world. Recently, we have categorized this as the Go aspect

of what we do at CLA. Our vision statement incorporates

this by saying “We are joining God in the transformation of

our lives, neighbourhood, nation and world”. This has and

continues to be expressed through the witness of our people

in each of their lives, and through special events and

initiatives coordinated by CLA Missions.

We Go because it is required of us. CLA sends because

we aim to make missionaries of our people. “Therefore go

and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the

name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20

and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded.”

(Matthew 28:19 -20)

CLA serves local missions through CityServe, ESLC,

through financial support. We serve in national missions

through ongoing relationship and financial support with the

First Nations, ministries in the NWT and others extending

across Canada. Around the world, we partner with and financially

support over 40 global workers and projects combined.

A key component of what we do is Short Term Missions

Trips. Our church aims to send out an average of 12 teams

per year to various nations around the world and within

Canada. It’s our desire to see more people motivated to

participate in these trips. Through these experiences our

hearts are softened and conformed: to go, to give and to

pray for people who need Christ. The Word of God encourages

us: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom

shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am

I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8)

This year, it is our prayer and desire to see each of you

engage in helping us execute the Go component of our

church. I know from personal experience, once you step into

this area of ministry, your life will forever be transformed.

SOUTHEAST ASIA

BY SARA-LEE HAMRE

Never a dull moment in South East Asia! In March it was an

absolute joy to travel around Asia with a small team from

CLA. We landed in Thailand to a tremendous wave of heat

and humidity and it felt great! Imagine Thailand (IT) Global

Workers, Matt Price and Jim Hussey, met us at the airport

for some orientation and our journey began.

Bangkok is a massive city with crazy traffic and it is

so much fun. We hung out for several days with Zach and

Megan Wylie, seeing the ministry efforts on the university

campus, visiting a local church, eating great food and hearing

from the hearts of these dedicated workers. It didn’t

even matter that we temporarily lost Joel in Bangkok as

we all travelled on motorcycle taxi’s to the university. He’s a

resourceful kid and we did get him back. All good!

Next we drove south to Takua Pa to see the Learning

Centre. Love this place. It is a bundle of energy filled with

local kids coming for after-school programs and help with

homework. This ministry began as a response to the aftermath

of the 2004 Tsunami. Children needed a place to go

after school as parents were working day and night to rebuild

their lives from the devastation. Now it continues as a

community center in that small city. CLA had the privilege

of donating a new playground for the children to use.

From there we drove to Phuket for a short flight to Mae

Sot, on the Western border of Thailand and Myanmar. So

great to hang out with IT worker Lei Mei and have a whirlwind

tour of many Burmese migrant schools where Imagine Thailand

supplies water systems and other supports. It has been a

privilege to be involved in this important work for many years

and to introduce CLA Missions to what is happening here.

Hopefully we can take some teams to Mae Sot in the future.

At this point our adventure really took off as we dragged

our suitcases on foot across the border into Myanmar. We

travelled with Imagine Thailand’s founder Peter Dove. He is

such a great guy to be with and we loved every moment. We

saw so much in Myanmar as we travelled by car through the

south-western part of this beautiful but troubled land. So

much history here. It is a country still trying to find its footing

on solid ground. Peter and Cavelle work in various aspects of

development and it was so inspirational to see them in their

element. Eating at the Yangon Bakery and seeing its production

sight was a very special treat – quite literally.

Finally, we flew in to the small city of Vientiane, Laos and

met up with our very own Andrew Hawkes. Wow! We loved

this cute little city, Common Grounds Café, the jewelry shop

and the ministry to some very special girls. To meet this team

and spend time with them was a wonderful way to end our

travels. It is privilege to support the work of the Hawkes and

their team. I really look forward to returning one day soon with

a team of CLA ladies. It would be such a great experience.

REVIVAL

BY PETER YOON, YOUTH PASTOR

28

CLACHURCH.COM

The fall marks the beginning of a new season for our students

and families; a new grade, a new class, a new teacher,

and perhaps even a new school. For some, this change

presents a unique opportunity to start afresh, while for others

it provokes thoughts of anxiety, angst, and feelings of

uncertainty. All of this on top of the existing pressures of

being a teenager; and let’s face it, being a teenager is hard.

It has always been hard, but it’s harder than it’s ever been.

Experts, surveys, and articles would claim this generation

as the most anxious, disconnected, and confused. This conclusion

sounds bleak and hopeless, and if we allow this prescription

to define our young people, it would be easy for us

to dismiss our students and be cynical about the future. But

there’s good news: God has a plan! He hasn’t given up, and

we believe that God would love to use a generation that the

world counts as “down and out” to be a catalyst in bringing a

much-needed revival to our country.

I once heard a preacher say that the “wave starts in the student

section,” as he was alluding to the influence and impact

that young people can have on the spiritual vitality and life of

the church; and as a youth movement we couldn’t agree more.

We are filled with renewed faith and expectation that

out of a world full of darkness and confusion will rise a

generation passionate about personal relationship and

discipleship to Jesus. We are believing for a youth revival

in our cities, our schools, our sports teams, our clubs, our

homes, and our country. And this fall, as we continue to pursue

Him wholeheartedly, our prayer is the same prayer that

the church has been praying for millennia: “Your Kingdom

come, Your will be done.”

YOUNG ADULTS

BY JEREMY KING, YOUNG ADULTS PASTOR

THE VISION

One year ago, we felt led to start a weekly gathering for

young adults on Thursday nights. Our goal was to create

a space where we could teach the Bible, be open to the

Spirit and re-emphasize kingdom values week in, week

out. Our hope then, and our hope now is that by doing this

we’d see a healthy, Christ centred community develop. All

year we’ve been asking the question: What would it look

like for us to live out the way of Jesus in our relationships,

workplaces, schools and various spheres of influence; and

bit by bit we’re answering the question as we step out in

obedience.

THE LAST YEAR

It’s been a beautiful year. Over 10 people have made decisions

to follow Christ for the first time and are on the

ongoing journey of reordering their lives around His word.

Lots more have rededicated their lives to Jesus and others

have come in to the light about sin that was crippling them.

Some of the people who’ve come to faith did it through

Alpha, which we were able to run two times this past year.

20 young adults took initiative and started alphas in homes

and campuses in our city. We now have over 300 people

that are part of the community and it feels more and more

that people aren’t just attending, but that they are participating

in what God is doing.

THE NEW SERIES

On September 6, we’re beginning a series on spiritual disciplines.

Throughout church history, spiritual disciplines have

been a major part of the Christian life. Sometimes when

we think about spiritual disciplines, we think about chores

and dead religion. However, the disciplines aren’t rooted in

dead religion, but are rooted in a desire to know Jesus and

live life the way He did. All Christians acknowledge that we

need to live dependent on the Holy Spirit and in communion

with the Father through the Son. The disciplines we want to

grow in or choose to adopt in our lives are those that were

practiced by Jesus Himself, who is the perfect man and who

showed us what being a human is really about.

As Christians, we want to follow Jesus. By looking at

the Gospels and all of scripture, we can easily come to the

conclusion that to follow Him means we should follow His

example. One thing Jesus modeled well for us is how to prioritize

relationship with the Father and live with a kingdom

mindedness while living in a hostile culture. We’re designing

the series along with a 30-day booklet designed to help

awaken the disciplines in our lives. Through teaching and

practice, we’re hoping to change our daily rhythms in general

as we tangibly experience the gift that the disciplines

are. We’d love for you to join us on Thursday nights, but

even more so, we would love for you to embrace the disciplines

and grow in deeper relationship with Jesus.

You’re welcome to pick up a copy of the booklet, available

September 27 at our young adult book table for $5!

BUS MINISTRY

INTERVIEW WITH ANNA Mc NICHOLL

BY KIM TRAN

If you have been around CLA, especially in the Summer,

than I am sure you have heard of Bus Ministry and their hot

dog fundraisers! But, if you are like me, you may be wondering

what exactly do they do, who is involved and so recently

I had the chance to connect with Anna to hear more about

Bus Ministry and her involvement.

What is your current role in Bus Ministry?

Currently, I am the Preschool Program Director. Kids Klub is

a fast paced and active program. It can be overwhelming to

young children who may have never been in a group setting

as large as over 200 children. So, I try to achieve the same

purpose as the program for the older children, however at

a developmentally appropriate level younger children can

Hi Anna, thanks for taking the time to answer some of my

comprehend and enjoy.

questions. Lets start with, how long have you been with

Bus Ministry and how did you get involved?

I have been involved with Bus Ministry since Pastor Carl

knocked on my door when I was 5 years old. I got invited

to events such as the Christmas Banquets, Easter Blast,

and Super Saturday Kids Klub. Years after losing contact

with the Bus Ministry Team, I was put into foster care. In

a time where I felt completely alone and no true purpose,

Jesus brought me back to serve and grow a meaningful relationship

with Him again. My foster home happened to be

connected with Pastor Carl and I was given the opportunity

to be apart of the Sidewalk Kids Klub team and later

a member of the Impact Team. I have not stopped serving

Bus Ministry since then.

Can you give an example of how you see God at work in

Bus Ministry?

Through and through, Bus Ministry is a testament that nothing

is impossible with God. Despite the many obstacles Bus

Ministry has had to face to continue to share the word of

God to the community, they have persevered purely because

it is what God has called them to do. Many generations

have come and gone in Kids Klub in their almost 30

years of existence, but with every child that hears the word

of God a seed is planted in their hearts. The ultimate step of

faith Bus Ministry demonstrates is trusting God to continue

to carry that seed into growth in His own time. I am a living

example of that and so are the many volunteers who also

grew up at Kids Klub.

What impact has Bus Ministry had on you life?

Bus Ministry has impacted my life immensely. I was headed

down a path that not many children in my situation get

saved from. When I moved into my foster home, I thought

that God had abandoned me. Bus Ministry became a miracle

in my life. They became the doorway that brought me

back to Jesus and the Church. God never left me but instead

brought me through a journey where I can now serve

for His kingdom. I will always be grateful for their continuous

love and support for me.

Wow 30 years! And you have been both a child attending

and now you are serving. Why do you continue to serve

with Bus Ministry?

I continue to serve with Bus Ministry because I am from the

same background as the children we pick up on our buses

every week. I know the need first hand as I have experienced

the hardships and devastation poverty and mental illness can

cause. A family’s socioeconomic status should not be the

determining factor of whether or not they hear the gospel,

when otherwise they wouldn’t. Bus Ministry does not look at

the exterior of a family’s situation but at their need for Jesus.

32

CLACHURCH.COM

Anna, thank you for sharing about your experience, it is an amazing testimony of

what God has done in your life and through the ministry. What encouragement

could you offer to someone who is considering serving with Bus Ministry?

If you want an opportunity to change lives on a regular basis, Bus Ministry is the

ministry to be in. It is not an easy ministry to stay committed to because the families

you work with have deep pain and many do not believe in Jesus at all. Bus Ministry

humanizes the people that otherwise get written off by society as too difficult

to work with. I encourage anyone who has any calling to evangelize to consider

serving with Pastor Carl. Anyone can listen to a service, it is what you do after that

opens your heart to a deeper relationship with Jesus. The heart of God for the orphans,

the widows and the ill is present here at CLA and it is in Bus Ministry.

HER STORY

BY DEBBIE TONN, WOMEN’S PASTOR

The other night I had a meeting that was cancelled and though this is usually cause

for a celebration, I already knew my husband was working late and my kids were

all out with friends so the only thing waiting for me at home was an overloaded

laundry basket. Yes, I knew that I should probably go home and at the very least

separate the socks from the towels (ugh), but instead I found myself dialling the

number of one of my closest friends to see if she had time for a quick coffee. She

was on her way to the gym, but like me she is not a real gym enthusiast (we both

like saying we were at the gym, but we don’t actually really like going to the gym).

So, I laughed when it took her less than five seconds to say, “where do you want

to meet?”. Amazingly we scored the coveted table by the fireplace at the back of

our favourite café in Abbotsford and spent the next two hours laughing and sharing

and crying.

Now hit the repeat button on that exact pattern about three more times. She

was going through stuff and I was going through stuff. We both shared stories –

some good, some celebratory, and some heart breaking. I was amazed at her faith

despite an on-going trial that I had no idea she had been facing. She encouraged

me in mine as I expressed sadness over a loss that was out of my control. And when

the coffee shop owner came by our table to tell us he was closing, we huddled

close and prayed for each other before we got in our cars and drove away. So much

better than an evening with laundry!

We all have stories, don’t we? Stories of God’s goodness and faithfulness in our

lives; and still very honest stories of the times when we struggled to understand

where He was as we walked through dark days, lonely moments, and heart-breaking

pain. We experience good things and hard things, and in it all and despite it all,

God is in our stories, building our faith, working out our purposes and continually

preparing us for His plan.

Women’s Ministry at CLA is about drawing closer to Jesus as we share our stories

and celebrate the work He has done and is doing in each other’s lives. It is about

recognizing that we all come on Wednesday morning or a Friday night or to Bible

study in different seasons of our life and faith and we bring with us different stories.

We need each other to pass on the good news of what God is bringing us

through and has brought us through. It builds our faith and encourages us when we

come together and share. We would love you to take a look at the many ways you

can connect through Women’s Ministry at CLA as we celebrate, “His story in HER

life” this coming year.

SATURATE EVERYDAY CONFERENCE

With Jeff Vanderstelt | CLA Langley | Oct. 12 & 13, 2018

There is a very exciting and unique opportunity for all of us,

coming to CLA this October!

Our pastoral team is thrilled Vancouver has been selected

as one of only two cities in North America to host

an inspiring conference, called “Saturate Everyday”. Several

leading churches and networks across many denominations

are working together to equip Christians to bring impact

to their day-to-day life through the experiences offered in

“Saturate Everyday” events. And we are pleased to let you

know that this conference will be held right here at our CLA

Langley campus!

presently leading a large American church in a similar direction

as CLA. Last fall, our staff and Life Group leaders

benefited greatly from a day of Jeff’s teaching. Now, Jeff

is returning to speak throughout the two-day “Saturate Everyday”

conference.

This conference is designed for everyone: life-long believer;

brand-new follower; and everyone in between. Your

faith will be encouraged as you gain biblical, practical and

inspiring teaching relevant to your life. You are invited!

We’re hoping to see as many of congregation, leadership

and staff attend as possible. Join us!

WHY SHOULD I GO?

Making disciples and reaching the lost are the two chief

mandates of the Church. We must prioritize effectiveness in

these areas, both personally and as a church. And the clear

heart and purpose of “Saturate Everyday” is to empower

everyone in their spiritual growth and missonal potential together.

As we continue to imagine what it looks like to see

our lives and neighbourhoods transformed, it’s important
