Welcome to the winter

This issue is coming to you hot of the press from the NZ Hair & Beauty Expo (even
though you may not receive it in your hands until a week or so later). We managed
to hold off going to print until immediately after the event, allowing us to include
a quick wrap up and some Expo coverage, with more detailed follow-up content to
come in our next issue of BeautyNZ.

BeautyNZ magazine is a professional beauty trade
magazine published on behalf of the New Zealand
Association of Registered Beauty Professionals Inc.
The NZARBP is recognised as the premier industry
organisation with a 50 year history of supporting
members, regulating the industry and the promotion
of a qualified workforce. The non-profit group
educates, informs, provides advice and keeps the
industry up to date with the latest information
through its magazine.
So, as I write this, we’re still on a high at the opportunity to spend time with SO
many people truly passionate and driven around making this industry successful.
It was also a fantastic opportunity to embrace the passion of those who chose to
be part of the NZH&B Expo, and see first-hand the latest technology, innovations,
products and training available.
The change of location to Viaduct Events Centre elevated the entire experience,
with the bright modern venue a fitting alignment to the cutting-edge technology
and products being showcased.
Actually managing to get face to face with distributors, business owners, brand
founders, educators and trainers rarely happens, so there was definitely a positive
vibe and general air of excitement. The amount of behind the scenes work that
goes into making an event like this happen is enormous, so congratulations to
all involved – organisors, exhibitors, guest speakers and visitors – and looking
forward to next year’s event ( June 15/16) at the same venue.
We hope there’s plenty in this winter issue
of BeautyNZ to fire up your motivation,
inspire and entertain. Plus don’t forget to
enter our awesome competitions
(pages 7 and 61). Good luck!

NZARBP
Representative
Meeting, Hawkes Bay
NZARBP member and area
representative Dawn Baxter hosted her
first representative meeting in Hawkes
Bay. Having worked in the beauty
industry for more than 30 years, Dawn
also has experience in education in the
industry for both AUT and EIT. After
the cyclone, Dawn was nominated to
look after the Hawkes Bay region as
NZARBP area representative.
Committed to helping the community
in many ways, including pitching in
and helping dig silt, Dawn ran a raffle
to help five communities. Close to
60 businesses donated services and
products, with over $11,000 raised.
In the wake of the difficult times
Hawkes Bay has been facing, she also
thought it was timely to host an area
representative evening to help pull
together and connect networks, and
share ideas and experiences.
“We have long been recognised as
a sounding board for our clients,
many of whom are looking for
advice or just for someone to listen
around life’s highs and lows. Lately
beauty therapists have been hearing
particularly raw and heart wrenching
stories. Sometimes the burden is high
for those on the receiving end,” says
Dawn.
“When it comes to mental health, both
the client and the beauty professional
need to be considered.”
As a beauty therapist herself, Dawn
understands how taxing it can be
treating others: giving physical touch
and emotional energy.
“Sometimes during these uncertain
times it’s hard to have the capacity to
be the best version of ourselves.
Booking software company Timely,
which Dawn uses, recently announced
the development of its free online
virtual masterclass training, to help
better understand the layers of
sensitive conversations and how to
navigate through them with some
well-equipped tools.
Rochelle Montgomerie from Making
Sense Psychology was a guest speaker
at the NZARBP meeting, sharing
some basic principles of psychological
first aid and suggesting some useful
strategies.
Eastern Institute of Technology Te Pūkenga NZARBP visit
NZARBP area representative Dawn Baxter visited the Beauty and Body students
from the Eastern Institute of Technology Te Pūkenga, at their temporary premises
in Napier town (the old Premier Hairdressing College). The devastating Hawkes
Bay floods earlier this year forced a premises relocation, with Taradale Campus
severely damaged, particularly the Beauty and Body school. This was hard for
us to hear, as after moving back to Napier, Dawn had originally been in charge of
setting up and helping expand the faculty with the late architect Paris Magdolenis
some 20 years ago. Present tutors
and program co-ordinator’s explained
how harrowing an ordeal it has been.
Dawn talked to the students about
the importance of joining the NZARBP
for many reasons, but especially
relevant in terms of becoming part
of a community, which she feels is
particularly important in the aftermath
of the floods and the ongoing impact
of this. Students and staff were
resilient, doing a lot of work online and
having managed well with everything
they have been through. Some
have lost their entire homes. Dawn
wished them well in their studies and
conveyed the Association’s support
to help them navigate through these
difficult times.
Otago Polytechnic NZARBP visit
Shelly Howat, NZARBP Otago Area Representative recently visited Otago
Polytechnic. Shelly spoke to a wonderful bunch of students about the
importance of working hard and training before going out on your own.
She talked about the importance of having love and passion in what you
do and caring for clients. Shelly talked to the students around one of her
passions - Look Good Feel Better – which she is starting up for patients
going through chemotherapy in the Balclutha area. Shelly encouraged
the girls to stay mindful if they were ever in a position where they could
help someone out to do it, as there are many out there struggling and
sometimes little things we do can make a significant change.

A closer look at the
business of homebased
salons
The beauty industry spans a spectrum of businesses,
amongst them home-based salons.
Arianne Dion officially founded Totally
RAD Beauty in 2020, and part of her
journey has been ensuring a deep
understanding of the importance of
professionalism, integrity and industry
standards. Arianne and her team are
all members of the NZ Association
of Registered Beauty Professionals,
helping ensure they are well informed
of industry changes and committed to
helping instil confidence in the homebased
salon business space.
BeautyNZ chats with Arianne for
a closer look at the challenges and
demands of a home-based salon.
What sparked your original passion
for the beauty industry and motivated
you to start your own business?
I come from a background in banking
and finance, and after graduating
with a bachelor's degree in business
economics, I initially pursued a career
in the corporate world. However, deep
within me, I felt a burning passion
for something more, something
that would allow me to connect
with people on a personal level and
empower them to feel confident and
beautiful.
My passion for the beauty industry
was ignited by my own personal
experiences. When I moved to New
Zealand from the Philippines in
August 2019, I discovered that beauty
services were often unaffordable for
someone with a modest income like
mine. This realisation struck a chord
within me. I wanted to create a space
where everyone, regardless of their
budget, could indulge in self-care and
be pampered. That's when the idea
of Totally RAD Beauty started taking
shape.
I strongly believe that self-care
should be accessible to all individuals,
regardless of their financial situation.
Witnessing the positive impact that
quality beauty treatments can have
on a person's confidence and overall
well-being, I was inspired to establish
a business where affordability and
excellence go hand in hand.
When did your business launch and
what was its original focus?
Totally RAD Beauty officially launched
in June 2020, but our journey began
long before that. It started as a parttime
endeavor, a way to pursue my
passion for the beauty industry while
complementing my income. In the
beginning, my focus was on buying
and selling home beauty devices like
hand-held pore vacuums, facial spinning
brushes, and jade rollers – just small
stuff. It was a way to share affordable
tools for self-care.
However, as I offered free facials as a
promotion for those who purchased
the products, I was taken aback by the
overwhelming positive response. Clients
not only loved the facials but also
requested more and were willing to pay
for my service. This unexpected demand
opened my eyes to the potential of
providing comprehensive and effective
treatments that go beyond just selling
beauty devices.
As my clientele grew and my skills
expanded through continuous learning
and training, I saw the opportunity to
evolve the business. My goal became
clear: to provide exceptional services
that are both accessible and affordable,
ensuring that everyone can experience
the transformative effects of quality skin
and beauty treatments.
The passionate team behind Totally RAD Beauty:
Alliah Dion, Arianne Rabie-Dion, and Karen Tolin
The journey to a fully-fledged homebased
beauty clinic has been an exciting
and rewarding experience. I am grateful
for the trust and support of my clients,
which has allowed Totally RAD to grow
and expand our offerings. The journey
continues as we strive to stay at the
forefront of industry trends, provide
outstanding results, and make a positive
impact on our clients' lives.
What are the positives of a home-based
business?
Operating as a home-based beauty
clinic brings a unique set of advantages.
Firstly, it allows us to create an intimate
and cozy environment that fosters a
sense of relaxation and comfort for our
clients. They can enjoy personalised
attention and a peaceful atmosphere
away from the hustle and bustle of
larger establishments. Additionally,
being home-based enables us to offer
more competitive pricing, making
quality beauty services accessible to
a wider range of individuals. Being a
home-based business also has proven
to be beneficial during uncertain times,
such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike
businesses with commercial rent and
overhead expenses, operating from
a home-based setup alleviates the
financial pressure and allows us to adapt
more easily to changing circumstances.
This flexibility enables us to continue
providing our services and supporting
our clients during challenging times.
What are some challenges of a homebased
business?
Home-based businesses also face unique
challenges, including separating work
and personal life, limited visibility, and
client perception. Balancing work and
personal responsibilities can be difficult
when they coexist in the same space,
requiring discipline and effective time
management. Additionally, home-based
businesses may struggle with limited
visibility, as they may not have the same
exposure as larger establishments.
Building trust and credibility with clients
can also be a challenge, as some may
perceive home-based businesses as
less professional. However, with careful
planning, establishing boundaries,
effective marketing strategies, and a
commitment to professionalism, these
challenges can be overcome, enabling
the business to thrive.
What is the most challenging aspect of
owning and managing a small homebased
beauty clinic?
The most challenging aspect of owning
and managing a small home-based
beauty clinic, despite having a dedicated
team of therapists, is still the immense
workload and the diverse range of
responsibilities that come with it. While
I have a team of talented individuals
who support me, I am still heavily
involved in every aspect of the business.
From providing beauty treatments
to handling administrative tasks,
managing marketing efforts, creating
engaging content for social media,
actively reaching out to potential clients,
overseeing financial management,
maintaining inventories, ensuring proper
cleaning and maintenance, and even
maintaining our website, the list of
responsibilities is extensive.
To keep costs down and maintain the
financial stability of the clinic, I often
take a DIY approach, handling various
tasks myself. This requires a significant
amount of time, energy, and dedication,
but it allows me to provide exceptional
service to our clients while minimizing
expenses.
Despite the challenges, I find great
fulfillment in having a hands-on
approach and building deep connections
with my clients. Each day presents new
opportunities for growth and learning,
and I am constantly motivated to
improve and deliver the best possible
service.
While I may be the sole owner of the
clinic, I deeply value and appreciate
the contributions of my team. They
play a crucial role in the success of the
business, whether it's collaborating on
ideas, assisting with day-to-day tasks, or
providing support during busy periods.
Their dedication, expertise, and hard
work inspire me to create a positive work
environment where everyone can thrive.
What steps do you take to prioritize
self-care and relaxation amidst the
demands of running a home-based
beauty clinic?
It's easy to get caught up in the demands
of running a home-based beauty clinic,
but I firmly believe that self-care is
essential for long-term success and
happiness. By prioritizing self-care and
effectively managing my time, I ensure
that I have the energy and mental
clarity to thrive both personally and
professionally.
One of the advantages of being in
the beauty industry is that I have
the opportunity to try out different
treatments firsthand. When it comes to
self-care, one of my favorite indulgences
is having facials. However, since I'm
currently pregnant, I need to be mindful
of certain limitations. Nevertheless, I still
prioritize hydration and nourishment for
my skin.
In my personal skincare routine, I
love incorporating hydrating facials
with a soothing hydrojelly mask. This
combination infuses my skin with muchneeded
moisture, leaving it feeling
refreshed and revitalized. Additionally,
I rely on a range of products enriched
with Vitamin C. This powerful ingredient
not only brightens my complexion
but also provides antioxidant benefits,
helping to enhance my skin's radiance
and protect it from environmental
stressors.
Taking the time for self-care, including
caring for my skin, allows me to unwind,
recharge, and feel my best. It's an
essential part of my overall well-being
and helps me maintain a healthy worklife
balance.
Can you tell us about the range of
treatments you provide and why you
have chosen to focus on these?
At Totally RAD Beauty, we pride
ourselves on offering a comprehensive
range of treatments that cater to
the diverse needs of our clients.
Our services encompass a variety of
facials, advanced skin therapies such
as hydrafacials, oxygeneo, picosecond
laser rejuvenation, RF skin tightening,
microneedling, peels, etc. We also
provide body sculpting services, lash/
brow enhancements, waxing, makeup
application, and we will soon introduce
cosmetic teeth whitening.
Our focus on these treatments stems
from our commitment to meeting the
desires and requirements of our clients.
We believe in the transformative power
of skincare and beauty treatments and
strive to provide options that address
different concerns and goals. By offering
a diverse range of treatments, we
ensure that our clients have access
to the services they need to enhance
their natural beauty and boost their
confidence.
In addition to our wide range of
treatments, we place great importance
on continuous education and staying
updated with industry trends. We
regularly participate in training

keep up with the latest advancements
in skincare and beauty. By staying
informed and up-to-date, we
can incorporate new techniques,
technologies, and products into our
offerings, delivering the best possible
results and experiences for our valued
clients.
You mentioned that you are continually
studying the industry and taking
short courses. How does this ongoing
education benefit your clients?
Ongoing education is a key aspect
of our commitment to providing
exceptional services. We continuously
invest in our professional development
by participating in short courses offered
by industry suppliers and institutions
like the NZ Laser Training Institute. This
allows us to stay up-to-date with the
latest advancements in skincare and
beauty treatments, ensuring that we
can offer our clients the most cuttingedge
techniques and technologies.
By staying informed and continuously
improving our knowledge and skills, we
are able to deliver superior results and
a more satisfying experience for our
valued clients.
Which brands/products do you work
with or recommend?
As a small business with limited
capital, we have carefully chosen
brands that offer cost-effective yet
efficient products. For most of our
skin treatments, we work with the
brands Dermedics and SkinRX from
YouthBeauty. These brands provide
excellent results while being accessible
for us with smaller opening orders. In
addition, for some of our advanced
treatments, we use high-end products
from Mesoestetic. These brands
have proven to deliver exceptional
quality and efficacy, aligning with our
commitment to providing top-notch
services to our clients.
What are your thoughts on the future
of home-based businesses in the
beauty industry, and how do you see
it evolving alongside larger chain
establishments?
The future of home-based businesses
in the beauty industry is incredibly
promising and exciting. In recent years,
we have witnessed a growing trend and
increased interest in the concept of
home-based beauty clinics. People are
seeking more personalised and intimate
experiences, where they can receive
exceptional treatments in a comfortable
and relaxed environment.
We offer a unique balance between
professionalism and a warm, welcoming
atmosphere. We provide a sense of
privacy and personalised attention
that may not always be achievable in
larger chain establishments. Clients
appreciate the cozy and inviting setting,
where they can truly unwind and enjoy
their self-care journey.
Moreover, home-based businesses
often have the advantage of being
more cost-effective, allowing us to
provide competitive pricing without
compromising on the quality of
services. This accessibility attracts
a wider range of individuals who
may have previously found beauty
treatments to be unaffordable.
In the future, we envision homebased
businesses playing a significant
role in the beauty industry. They will
continue to thrive alongside larger
chain establishments, offering an
alternative option that resonates with
those seeking a more intimate and
personalised experience. This diversity
within the industry allows individuals to
choose the setting that best suits their
preferences and needs.
Ultimately, the success of any beauty
business, whether home-based or
a larger chain, will be driven by the
commitment to exceptional service,
expertise, and the ability to create a
positive and memorable experience
for clients. It's an exciting time for the
beauty industry, and we are proud to
be part of the evolving landscape as a
home-based beauty clinic.
Why are your entire team members of
NZARP, and why do you think this is
important?
This membership holds great
significance for us as it reflects our
commitment to maintaining the
highest standards of professionalism
and expertise in the beauty industry.
Being part of NZARP demonstrates our
dedication to upholding a strict code of
conduct and continually enhancing our
skills through ongoing education and

The home-based nature of our
business does not compromise our
commitment to excellence. In fact,
being members of NZARP establishes
a strong foundation of trust and
credibility with our clients. They can
have confidence in our qualifications,
expertise, and adherence to industry
best practices. Our affiliation with a
respected professional association

When it comes to the beauty industry,
Natasha Bourke has more than earned
her stripes. The tenacious industry
leader has resolutely forged her own
path and become an innovator in
this space, both in New Zealand and
globally.
Natasha’s own personal commitment
to ‘healthy body, healthy mind’ is
at the heart of how she lives her life
(she recently completed a certificate
in Holistic Health Coaching) and is
something of a pro when it comes
to homemade sauerkraut, a family

Natasha’s introduction to the world of
beauty was under the careful guidance
of her parents, who led the way;
founding seven salons in the lower
North Island and igniting a shared focus
and thirst for knowledge and progress
around skin health.
That early involvement sparked a
lifelong passion for both beauty and
business, and Natasha has gone on
to create her own legacy – founding
Skintopia in 2019, a first-of-its-kind
salon concept with a holistic, resultsdriven
approach to skin.
With five Skintopia locations
nationwide, the focus is on combining
quality professional products with
treatment technology and internal
wellness. Skintopia is the perfect
example of Natasha’s leadership

This year marks a time to reflect on the
group’s growth and progress, with Two
Hundred Doors celebrating 30 years
at the heart of New Zealand’s beauty
industry.
BeautyNZ chats with Natasha to find
out more about her journey, goals and
motivation:
Q. What is an overview of what
your role involves and your focus
areas?
A. As Group CEO, I am involved
in developing strategy and
working with our leadership
team to drive the business
forward. I work closely with our
Skintopia Business Managers
in Auckland and Wellington,
constantly looking at ways to
grow the business and improve
efficiencies.
Q.A brief overview of your key
brands and what sets them
apart?
A. Our key brands at Two Hundred
Doors are Dermalogica, The
Beauty Chef, Bio-Therapeutic
and Skintopia. We have been
distributing Dermalogica for
30 years and over that time,
it has been their unwavering
commitment to supporting
the professional skin therapist
(through innovative products and
services and education), enabling
the brand to be a global leader
in professional skin care. The
Beauty Chef is a range of foodgrade
wellness products aimed
at improving skin health through
working on the gut microbiome.
Bio-Therapeutic are leading
manufacturers of equipment
Q.Could you share a brief overview
of your career trajectory?
A. I literally grew up in this industry –
my parents co-founded the New
Zealand Institute of Electrolysis
& Beauty Therapy in Palmerston
North and they owned a chain
of skin care clinics (Jane Dawson
Skin Care) in the lower North
Island in the 80’s/90’s. My
mother developed the PhD
Waxing System and introduced
Dermalogica to NZ in 1993. It
was a natural progression to
enter the industry when I left
school, so I trained as a skin
(beauty) therapist in 1999 and
then completed a Bachelor of
Business Studies (majoring in
Marketing Communications) in
2002. I worked across several
Auckland spa/salon locations as
a skin therapist while studying,
which built the foundation for
my understanding of the beauty
industry. After completing my
studies, I moved to London and
took up a role with Dermalogica
in the UK. I was lucky enough
to complete a graduate
management training program
during my time there, which
gave me a broad understanding
of all functions of the business.
I returned to NZ in 2007 to take
up a sales and marketing role in
the family firm. Over the next
11 years my parents retired and
I took on more responsibilities
and grew the business. In 2018
I had the opportunity to acquire
the ownership of the company
and in 2019 we opened our first
Skintopia location in Wellington.
Last year we added The Beauty
Chef and Bio- Therapeutic to
our portfolio of brands at Two
Hundred Doors.

Q.What continues to fuel your
passion for this industry?
A. I just love the people I get to
work with! They inspire me
every day … our courageous
and entrepreneurial stockists
who we supply, and the kind and
passionate women that I work
with across Two Hundred Doors
and Skintopia.
Q.Some info on your earlier
years and passions, and
what you thought your
career path might be when
you were still at school?
A. There was a time when I thought I
would study law. Thank goodness
my career took a different
direction as being a solicitor now
seems like incredibly dull work in
comparison to what I get to do. I
am a born entrepreneur and love
operating in a creative space and
having autonomy. I love to work
across multiple projects and can’t
sit still for long!
Q. What key learnings have you
taken on board in order to
nurture your own wellness and
wellbeing?
A. In 2018 I was diagnosed with an
autoimmune condition, and it
was a wakeup call for me around
the importance of managing my
stress. I was probably suffering
from Rushing Women’s Syndrome
- juggling work and home life,
and not making enough time for
my own wellbeing. Since then, I
have studied as a Holistic Health
Coach and now try to apply these
learnings to myself and my family.
Q.What are some of the most
valuable lessons learned around
running a successful skincare
business?
A. I have some general lessons that
would apply for any business:
1. Create a winning team culture
2. Listen to your customers
3. Understand the numbers
Q. What valuable tips would you
offer when it comes to nurturing
professional relationships?
A. Be good to your word and deliver
on your promises. And look for
ways you can add value to the
relationship.
Q. What exciting things are on the
2023 horizon for Dermalogica in
NZ?
A. Dermalogica is very committed
to new product innovation. We’ve
had four new product launches
already this year and are expecting
more over the next few months.
We are seeing some unique and
interesting new ingredients in
Dermalogica formulas including
upcycled cranberries which are
a biproduct of the food industry,
ensuring its environmentally
friendly sourcing. This ingredient
provides a biopeptide which
reduces inflammation. Fermented
pomegranate enzymes which are
extracted from unused fruit pulp
promote gentle exfoliation, and
red gardenia flower extract which
is a source of the antioxidant
Ferulic Acid, provides a naturally
pink colour to a formula. Another
recent new product has oxygen
optimising phytoactives which
help the body detect low oxygen
and initiates increased transport
of oxygen through circulation. The
science we’re seeing is amazing.
There are new professional
products for the treatment room
coming up also and an exciting
new skin treatment, Hydrapeel.
Q.How important is the team
around you and what are some of
the most important
considerations for ensuring
successful team dynamics,
particularly in a female-led team?
A. The team are the secret sauce
in our business. We have a
really supportive culture at Two
Hundred Doors and Skintopia and
looking after our team is a number
one priority. We work in an
industry full of emphatic and kindhearted
people (mainly women!).
It is important that our team is
reflective of this. We strive to hire
people that match our company
values (kind, open, courageous,
and who like to have fun!). We find
that when we lead with our values
(and hire on them) this supports
the dynamic we need within our
team.

Q. What have been some of the
most important decisions made to
ensure the evolution of Two Hundred
Doors in the direction you wanted it to
grow?
A. I think getting great advice and
hiring awesome people, but also
staying relevant and watching
trends. We copped a lot of
criticism when we started selling
Dermalogica direct to consumers
in 2010 but we saw that this
was the way of the future. It
was important to us to bring our
stockists along on the journey, so
we have always had a mechanism
to pass on commission from
online sales to our stockists.
This became super important
in Covid when our industry was
restricted from trading. For many
of our stockists, the Dermalogica
website became a lifeline and
perhaps their only revenue
stream for a short time. I’m proud
that we challenge the status
quo and do things differently,
while maintaining our values and
keeping our customers centric
to our strategy. Look around
now: the majority of professional
brands are sold online, and they
don’t all offer a commission to
their stockists.
Q. Who are some other NZ
businesswomen you admire?
A. I am such a fan of Cecilia
Robinson, co-founder of My
Food Bag and Tend. She is smart
and courageous, and a true
entrepreneur. It has also been
such a privilege getting to know
Roanne Jacobson (founder of
Saben) through the EmpowHER
scholarship. I loved hearing her
story in business and have so
much admiration for the brand
she has created.
Q. Have there been unexpected
detours in the evolution of Two
Hundred Doors?
A. I don’t think we have taken too
many detours, but there have
been some brands (along the
way) that haven’t worked out
for us (as a distributor). We’ve
now come up with a very robust
process around due diligence for
assessing whether a brand will
be a good fit for Two Hundred

Doors. Launching a brand to
market takes a lot of investment
and you want to be sure that the
opportunity is there, but also
that they are the right people to
partner with. We are so fortunate
in the relationships we have with
our existing suppliers who are all
incredible to work with.
Q. What are some of the
greatest challenges facing the
NZ Beauty Industry right now
and do you have any advice
around navigating these?
A. Like most industries, the current
economic climate is tough!
Now is the time to be looking at
ways to increase efficiencies in
all areas of your business. The
last 18 months have seen a rise
in last-minute cancellations due
to illness. Our industry needs
to get tough on cancellation
policies and try and secure
booking deposits to minimise
cancellations. The subscription
model is also something that all
beauty businesses need to look
at very closely. Finding great staff
is also a challenge due to low
unemployment and what feels
like a decrease in immigrants
filling roles. My advice here is to
work on staff retention strategies
so you don’t lose people. They are
very hard to replace.
Q. What’s something people might
be surprised to know about you?
A. When I talk about values, I don’t
just talk about them… I live them
(and so do my team!).
Q.What are your favourite personal
‘pamper’ treatments?
A. I love our signature OxyGlow
treatment at Skintopia. It
incorporates Oxygen and LED
light and is perfect for hydrating
the skin and improving barrier
function. And I love a brow
lamination too.
Q. What are non-negotiables
for you when it comes to
business relationships/
decisions?
A. Honesty and transparency. We
don’t hide behind our strategies
– we are open, honest and
forthright about them.

it’s a dream come true to achieve ranging

Two years in the making prior to

disruptors, while all packaging is fully
compostable or recyclable.
“Throughout the evolution of Tronque,
we’ve never wavered from our mission

says Tanné.

Profhilo Body

Profhilo Body has launched in New Zealand. The
new injectable is specifically designed for use on

Hot off the back of the successful launch of

that those areas have aged prematurely.

a non-invasive treatment reduces the possibility

KYT launches designer
bags for diabetics
Bridget Scanlan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 20 and that
experience has motivated her to go on to design and found KYT bags; redefining
diabetes with an innovative bag range that merges medicine and fashion.
KYT, which stands for Keeping You Together, has launched three new
contemporary, premium bags purpose-built for the everyday needs
of people with diabetes — a chronic condition that the World Health
Organization (WHO) says affects 422 million people worldwide.
Crafted with the insights of hundreds of diabetics from around the
world, the bags have innovative features, smart layouts, premium
materials like gold-rated Italian leather and solid brass hardware,
and ethical craftsmanship. A contemporary exterior discreetly
hides diabetes supplies like a testing kit, pump consumables, and
insulin pens.
After being diagnosed, as her pancreas stopped producing
insulin, Bridget had to learn to manage multiple blood glucose
tests and insulin injections every day. Along with all the
equipment that came with it.
“From talking to diabetics around the world, I got universal
insights into the daily diabetes struggle,” Scanlan says. “It
sparked a thought: could smarter design empower people
to feel better about dealing with daily treatment?
I wanted to redesign diabetes, so we could all redefine it.”
Combining her background in fashion design and
entrepreneurship, Scanlan was inspired to channel her
chronic condition to help empower other diabetics by
creating designer bags specifically for diabetics.
“Every zip, every angle, every equipment detail has
been influenced by the insights gathered from the
hundreds of incredible diabetics who have opened
up and shared their diabetes stories (and gripes) with
me,” Scanlan says.

KYT is also committed to ethical production and

Charlotte Tilbury partners
with CIDESCO for new
education program
Global luxury beauty brand Charlotte Tilbury has partnered with CIDESCO for its
new educational certificate program ‘Charlotte’s Expert Skin Program’.
This new program has been created specifically for Charlotte Tilbury beauty
therapists, beauty advisors and make-up artists, with the aim of helping them
provide world standard facial services.
This makes Charlotte Tilbury one of the first retail beauty brands to get its
retail staff trained professionally.
CIDESCO is the world standard for beauty and spa therapy, and
the international certification of this new certificate program will
be Charlotte Tilbury’s first CIDESCO-endorsed educational
program.
‘Charlotte`s Expert Skin Program’ comprises a
Charlotte Tilbury Expert Skin training course
covering theoretical and practical training, an
MCQ examination, practical examination and
submission of five Case Histories. This includes
having an expert level of understanding of
ingredients, skin types and dermatology to
establish a customer centric approach for the
development of skincare routines and to drive
retail sales.
A new workout
- for the face
Lift, sculpt, tighten, and brighten skin
with an exciting new workout from The
Facialist. Founder Ashleigh Scott has
leant into the success of The Facialist’s
iconic Yoga Facial and reimagined it:
developing new facial fitness protocols
and creating an entirely new treatment
menu which combines cardio and
high intensity facial massage with
strengthening, stretching and sculpting
movements.
Facial Sculpt is designed to help
create a naturally lifted appearance
and the workout combines cardio and
high intensity facial massage with
strengthening, stretching and sculpting
movements.
Much as you exercise the body, the
Facial Sculpt treatments work out the
40 odd forgotten muscles in the face.
Like the gym – the more frequently you
work out; the greater and more longlasting
the results.
“You know that saying, do something
today that tomorrow you will be
thankful for. This is it. For best results,
consistency is key when it comes to
skincare and these workouts. Whilst
you’ll get real-time results from one
appointment, you can see lasting
results from regular sessions,” says
Ashleigh.
Among the treatment goals are
kickstarting skin metabolism,
stimulating blood flow, boosting
oxygenation, promoting collagen
production, and lymphatics. Cardio
mimicking massage warms up the face,
before sculpting and lifting movements
work to relieve muscle tension and
sculpt the facial contours creating
definition to cheek bones and jawline
while lifting the eyes.
The longer Facial Sculpt + treatment
also incorporates heritage Buccal
techniques to maximise results by
going deeper, working inside the mouth
to better target cheeks and the jaw to
release tension and lift the face. Then
Facial Sculpt Intense catapults to new
levels with the addition of specialist
micro-current, which works to stimulate
and contract the muscles to keep them
lifted, intensify results and add to the
stay power of the workout.

PSB
celebrates
25 years
PSB Founder Donna Smith
in business
From small beginnings great things grow. This commonplace saying is particularly
relevant for industry stalwart Donna Smith, who has grown her business Professional
Skin & Beauty (PSB) from a small start up to one of New Zealand’s largest
distributors to the professional beauty industry.
2023 represents a major milestone for
Donna and PSB, which celebrates an
impressive 25 years in business.
The journey began when Donna
changed vocations in 1995; moving
from the dental industry to train in
beauty therapy, before setting up her
own clinic and Environ distributorship,
with her therapist partner Sally Topper.
In 1998 when Sally moved to Australia,
Donna formed PSB Ltd, working from
a spare bedroom at home, with just
herself and one part timer. Driving the
country solo to educate therapists
on the benefits of Environ skincare,
Donna built up her stockist accounts.
The business rapidly expanded, until
her late husband Dean, a Master
Builder, designed and built bespoke
offices on site. By 2003, with the
addition of the jane iredale brand, the
business had already outgrown these
offices and located to a purpose-built
facility in Onehunga, where PSB still
operates today.
PSB distributes two world renowned
brands: Environ Skincare and jane
iredale.
Environ Skincare has received over 100
awards, most recently being voted,
‘Top Medical Skin Care Line in the
global Aesthetic Everything Awards for
the sixth consecutive year.
And jane iredale, who led the mineral
makeup revolution back in 1994,
still stands true to her original ethos
of providing ethical, clean beauty
products that are a true extension of
skincare.
Throughout 25 years, Donna has
fronted many major industry initiatives
and trained and mentored hundreds
of skincare professionals in advanced
skin and treatment modalities. She
has consistently supported the NZ
Association of Registered Beauty
Therapists, along with sponsoring
Therapist of the Year at the Industry
Awards on seven occasions. In 2015
she was awarded the Contribution to
the Industry Award and in 2021 was
given Honorary Member status.
‘I would like to pay a huge tribute to all
our staff, current, and over the last 25
years,’ says Donna.
‘A business is only as good as its
people, and this business was built by
a fantastic team of people, who not
only shared my passion and values but
also their hard work and great ideas.
‘I also want to thank our stockists, a
group of exceptionally talented and
caring people who just want to make
a difference and help their clients
achieve healthy protected skin. Plus
the many industry friends I have made,
here and overseas. It has been an
amazing journey, which I hope will
continue for another 25 years!’

GIVE YOUR
FACE A
Elevate your business with
triLift facial stimulation
As innovation continues marching
forwards, triLift opens a new horizon
for the aesthetic industry (and its
patients), with the facial stimulation
device offering a unique three-layered
procedure to achieve a natural looking
face-lift like result – with no down time.
This game changing technology
is powered by Dynamic Muscle
Stimulation (DMSt) and Radio
Frequency energy, from the pioneers in
facial aesthetics – Lumenis.
The triLift skin rejuvenation and facial
stimulation device is a first-of-its-kind;
combining three modalities in one
platform to deliver a face-lift like effect
with no injections, surgery or down
time.
The DMSt technology targets structure,
contour and texture by treating the
triLift
three tissue layers; the
muscles, the dermal layer and
the epidermal layer. Unlike
traditional electrical muscle
stimulation and magnetic
muscle stimulation, DMSt
technology allows in-motion
muscle stimulation, covering
small to large areas. TriPollar
RF and triFX Radiofrequency
Microneedling then tighten the
skin, help smooth its texture and
plump it by regenerating collagen
and elastin.
According to studies (1,2,3), triLift
can increase skin smoothness by
80%,reduce the appearance of
wrinkles by 30%, and triple the natural
production of hyaluronic acid compared
to baseline.
“Ageing is part of life and happens to
all of us, but what many people do
not realise is that ageing is more than
wrinkles on the skin surface. It starts
and continues with the muscles, bones
and soft tissues below our skin,” says
Dr. Steven Dayan, facial plastic surgeon
and Director of DeNova Research in
Chicago.
“I am enthused by triLift’s innovative
technology, an advancement in treating
the multi-layer influences of ageing,
including the muscles, the dermal and
the epidermal layers,” he says. “triLift is
an option for anyone who wants to firm
up the appearance of their face with a
non-invasive, no downtime approach.
It’s a new approach
to anti-ageing.
The first-of-its
kind technology is
designed to tone,
define and lift facial
muscles through a
non-invasive method.
“Patients can expect a visible lift and
glow that is pleasant, quick and seems
to improve with every additional
treatment.”
Lumenis is a global leader in the
medical aesthetic market, and worldrenowned
in developing energy-based
applications, including Laser, Intense
Pulsed Light and Radio Frequency.
“At Lumenis, we are always pioneering
new technological and clinical frontiers,
bringing to market innovative,
efficacious and safe energy-based
aesthetic solutions,” says Paul Vujevic,
Country Manager for Lumenis ANZ.
“With the launch of triLift, we have done
just that and look forward to partnering
with providers to further expand the
impact and reach of this revolutionary
technology.”

PROFILE
triLift in practice with
Dr Saras Sundrum
Cosmetic Physician, Sydney
Dr Saras Sundrum is the medical
director and founder of Dr Saras
& Co Clinics across Sydney. She
holds a MBBS from the University
of Sydney and is a founding fellow
of the Cosmetic Physicians Society
of Australia. Boasting decades of
experience in the specialised field
of aesthetic and cosmetic medicine,
Dr Saras specialises in non-surgical
and non-invasive procedures, and is
passionate about delivering a natural,
healthy, fresh look for her patients.
Why did you decide to add triLift
Q. by Lumenis to your clinics?
triLift is an exciting, new, and
A. extraordinary technology as it
allows me to offer my patients an
anti-aging and lifting result almost
as good as surgery without the
risks and downside of surgery. This
comfortable, quick non-invasive
treatment not only lifts and tones
the face, but also improves contour
and texture, decreases wrinkling
and provides very natural results. It
has three components to it which
allows me to custom make an
individual treatment for individual
patients. The other big attraction
is that there are no consumables
(except for the needles for the
triFX component, which not every
patient is going to have).
What has been your personal
Q. experience with triLift so far?
What is the user experience like?
In more than 30 years of being
A. in the cosmetic medicine field,
I have always done my research
and been an early adopter of new
technology, as this is where the
biggest rewards are. triLift is an
easy-to-use application and can
be completely personalised. The
treatment is comfortable, and
results have been incredible. I’m
really excited to be able to offer
this game-changing technology to
my patients.
How does triLift fit into your
Q. existing aesthetic and cosmetic
offerings?
triLift is a complimentary
A. treatment for patients who
already have other treatments.
Patients can experience the lifting
and toning that triLift offers, in
combination with other therapies
like laser, peels and injectables.
And importantly, triLift is going to
attract a whole new patient group;
those who don’t want any invasive
treatment or injectables and are
attracted to its easy application
and long-lasting results.
Q.How do you find triLift
technology to be superior to
other anti-ageing
technologies??
Dynamic Muscle Stimulation
A. (DMSt) involves the application of
transcutaneous electrical muscle
stimulation through skin contact to
activate healthy skeletal muscle to
cause contraction. triLift activates
this muscle stimulation, causing
toning of muscles and restoration
of the contour of the SMAS,
thus strengthening facial skin
support, and improving the facial
appearance.
As we age, the SMAS weakens,
and the muscles of the lower
face lose their tone. This causes a
slackening of these muscles and
causes a less elastic supported
look to the face. By reversing this
we can provide a more youthful,
supported and lifted look for
patients.
triLift is a spectacular technology
because it addresses the sagging
nature of the face which happens
with ageing. In the past the only
treatment was really surgery
but now we can lift and contour
without surgery or needles.
Q.Why do you find DMSt to be
such an effective technology for
facial rejuvenation?
The before and after results
A. speak for themselves. Also it
can be used on almost everyone
and is so easy and non-invasive.
Treatments can be tailored - not
all faces are the same, particularly
male vs female.

Action packed across both days, with
more than 60 exhibitors, event manager
Shaughan Woodcock was delighted to
be able to support so many facets of the
industry.
“Being able to support those who
support the industry is one of our main
motivators,” he says, “especially in being
able to offer hair, grooming and beauty
professionals their own weekend at
this scale: time to learn, uncover new
trends, network, and just as importantly,
have fun together.”
Good news is that the venue of the
Viaduct Events Centre has been secured
for the NZ Hair & Beauty Expo for the
next five years, so exhibitors and visitors
can look forward to continued growth,
with the 2024 date already announced
for June 15-16.
The Expo weekend also provided
the New Zealand Association of
Registered Beauty Professionals with
the opportunity to meet and connect
with members, across association,
distributor, student and school
members.

Brand PROFILE
WiQo Cosmeceuticals:
WiQo Cosmeceuticals
is a specific home
care line designed to
complement WiQo
ONE and other bio
revitalisation treatments
to help maintain results.
Clinically tested, the
range protects and
nourishes skin, helping
reduce visible signs of
ageing.
Protect, Prevent and Stimulate
Products in the WiQo Cosmeceuticals
line have been developed with the most
advanced scientific research, under
the guidance of dermatologists, to
meet the skin’s main needs: protection,
prevention and stimulation.
1. Protection from damage caused
by UV radiation, weather, drying, air
pollution and TEWL.
2. Prevention by supplying skin with
nutrients to help restore and maintain
the hydrolipidic film.
3. Stimulation of skin to help it
rejuvenate, maintaining it in optimal
condition, while helping reduce the
appearance of wrinkles and sagging.
WiQo Cosmeceuticals offers high
quality and highly effective products to
meet these three needs.
The application of WiQo’s stimulating
products helps lower the skin’s natural
pH of around 5.5, causing it to perform
a kind of ‘gymnastics’ to bring it back
to its physiological values. As skin
never gets used to this process, daily
application of these products helps
keep the skin ‘active’ and is suitable for
all skin types and ages.
WiQo SMOOTHING
FACE FLUID is a
low pH glycolic acid
formulation suitable
for all skin types.
It helps reduce
the appearance of
imperfections and
wrinkles, promotes
deep hydration and
keeps the skin visibly
smooth and firm.
Recommended for
both young and older
skin, its ingredients
include an active
concentration
of glycolic acid
to help retain
water, preventing
dehydration.
WiQo NOURISHING AND
MOISTURISING FACE CREAM FOR DRY
SKIN provides dehydrated skin with
the nourishing and protective actives
it lacks, leaving it nourished, soothed
and hydrated. The high quality and
concentration of Shea Butter soothes,
nurtures and protects the skin, helping
increase firmness and elasticity. This
product is indicated for its protective
action on the superficial layers of the
skin and on skin that has been altered
by chemical peelings or other aesthetic
treatments. It is well tolerated even by
highly reactive skins.

Cell turnover slows dramatically as
we age, from approximately 20
days in younger and middle-aged
adults up to over 30 days in
older adults. As this happens, it
affects the skin’s appearance
and texture in a variety
of ways.
While proven to be
one of the most
effective ways
to address these
changes, chemical
peels aren’t a onesize-fits-all
treatment.
For optimal results, a
peel should be strong
enough to accelerate
cell turnover but not
so powerful as to
induce severe skin
inflammation.
The fully customisable
and ultra-potent Pro Power Peel
collection has been formulated by
Dermalogica to give skin therapists
the flexibility to create bespoke
peels that are perfectly suited to
each client’s needs. Available from
DermalogicaPRO Skin Centres
throughout New Zealand now
(locations available at
Dermalogica.co.nz).
“This continues to be our strongest
and fastest Professional peel suite,
that includes Alpha Hydroxy Acids
(AHAs), Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs)
and Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA),” says
Caroline Parker, Head of Education for
Dermalogica New Zealand.
“Each of these has a different
molecular size and penetrates the skin
to different degrees, allowing skin
care professionals to create tailored
treatments that effectively address
a vast range of skin concerns – from
early signs of ageing to uneven skin
tone and breakouts.
“In short, the Pro Power Peel redefines
the peel experience – allowing skin
therapists to provide every client with
full customised peel, which only take
between 15-25 minutes, so can be
incorporated into the Dermalogica
ProSkin 60 treatment.”

DERMAPEN 4
Setting the standard when it
comes to microneedling has always
been infused in the legacy of
Dermapen. And DermapenWorld’s
latest MG Collection Meso-Glides,
Anabolic/Chemical peeling with
Uber PRO and Uber MD products,
treatments, protocols, and technical
advancements are continuing this
important evolution when it comes to
innovation.
Microneedling is considered one of
the best ways to rejuvenate skin, by
triggering its natural healing process.
Dermapen is the original trailblazer
of this treatment and remains one
of the most trusted brands for
automated microneedling. During
the straightforward treatment, the
Dermapen4 (the hero device) creates
gentle microchannels and ultra-fine
punctures across the top layer of skin
in the affected area using fast-moving
needles in a stamping motion. These
micro-channels may be small but they
sure are mighty: triggering an increase
in collagen and elastin production,
which stimulates the body’s healing
response for skin to grow back better
and healthier than before.
The Dermapen4 has an anticontamination
mechanism, advanced
oscillating needle technology (meaning
more needles with a faster speed and
minimum pain), a unique scar setting,
and several other benefits:
• Clinically tested to refine skin
texture, reduces the appearance of
acne. scarring and stretch marks
• Minimal pain and no epidermal
tearing
• Less downtime compared to laser
and some peels
• Enhances the absorption of skincare
products
• Can be used around all facial
contours including delicate areas
• Excellent for mostly all skin types.
BEAUTYNZ MAGAZINE
The gold standard
IN MICRONEEDLING
Dermapen 4 is the only microneedling
device with a dedicated scar setting and
protocols for revision of all scar types
including acne scarring.
Added Benefits
The rejuvenation doesn’t stop there.
The treatment is enhanced by Dp
Dermaceuticals formulations specifically
designed to complement the action
of the Dermapen: a blend full of active
vitamins, antioxidants, and nourishing,
collagenboosting
ingredients, all of
which are applied
during the treatment.
The goodness of these
penetrates through the
micro-channels for maximised
results. In a Dermapen Gold
ATP (Authorised Treatment
Provider) treatment, this carefully
curated offering is delivered in the
form of a thorough cleansing and
exfoliation, followed by solutions full of
vitamins, hyaluronic acid, and other active
ingredients. Post-Dermapen4, the soothing
Dp Dermaceuticals Hyla-Active Face Mask is
applied. The needling part of the treatment
only takes around 10 to 20 minutes, but the
whole appointment will need up to an hour,
as this includes consultation and the Hyla-
Active Face Mask.
Clinics who undertake additional training
to qualify as a Dermapen Gold Authorised
Treatment Provider bring the added
reassurance to clients around set
standards of protocols and product
use as per Dermapenworld global
guidelines.

CORNER
TAKING THE RED
OUT OF ROSACEA
Those experiencing rosacea may not
be aware of the pathophysiology
of the disorder, nor the individual
triggers which may lead to regular and
prolonged ’flares’. These flares can be
uncomfortable, embarrassing, and
significantly affect one’s self-esteem.
Thought to have a genetic link
component, rosacea most often affects
those with fair skin. It may also still
affect those higher on the Fitzpatrick
Skin Type scale. Genetic vascular
reactivity results in increased blood
vessel density within the papillary
dermis (upper dermis) and with
increased blood flow leads, to flushing
or transient erythema.
While flushing may start in early
childhood and continue throughout
one’s life, rosacea typically peaks
between the ages of 30 and 50 years,
with females more commonly affected.
For males, although the incidence may
be slightly reduced, the severity of the
skin barrier disorder is increased, with
males typically experiencing Grade 3 or
Phymatous Rosacea, which can result in
increased and prolonged inflammation
and hyperplasia (an enlargement of the
skin tissue predominantly affecting the
nose).
Understanding the cause
The exact cause of rosacea is unknown,
however, there is a significant link to the
health of the first lines of skin barrier
defence.
The upper layer of the skin (stratum
corneum) is made up of layers of
corneocytes embedded in lipids that
provide protection to the underlying
cells and systems of the epidermis and
dermis.
When this protective layer becomes
compromised, due to a variety of
internal and external factors, including
stress, hormones and cosmetic
chemistry, the skin barrier does not
serve to provide adequate protection.
The flow-on effect is an increase in
inflammation, erythema, burning and
stinging which is the body’s immune
system’s response to help fight
allergens, pathogens and bacteria from
entering the skin.

DERMAVIDUALS.COM.AU
This increased activity leads to the
reddened appearance that so many
experiencing rosacea are accustomed
to, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
Becoming aware of some of the leading
triggers can be the defining factor in
managing this inflammatory skin barrier
disorder.
How to prevent your
flare-ups
There are many preventative measures
that can be put in place to help minimise
the risk of a flare and these include:
• Protecting the skin from UV radiation
• Avoiding extremes of heat and cold
• Reducing alcohol intake
• Managing psychological and
emotional stress
Additional preventative measures may
also support by improving skin health
while repairing and rebuilding the first
lines of skin barrier defence and these
include:
• Using skincare formulations free from
perfume and essential oils
• Reduce the use of skincare
formulations containing alcohol in
concentrations more than 10%
• Eliminate skincare that contains
emulsifiers, particularly polyethylene
glycols (PEG)
• Mineral oils should be avoided, and
other lipid-rich substances should be
applied sparingly
• Use lukewarm water for skin
cleansing instead of hot or cold
water.
Supportive skincare
In addition, the use of
Corneotherapeutic skincare
formulations, rich in skin-identical
ingredients, can help support the
formation of a competent skin barrier
while protecting the skin from further
damage. Look for anti-inflammatory
and skin-repairing ingredients such
as Liposome Concentrate Plus;
EGCG Liposome Serum; Boswellia
Nanoparticles; and Echinacea Extract.
Rosacea can be a challenging skin
barrier disorder to manage, but with the
help of a practising corneotherapist and
an individual approach in customising
the perfect solution for individual skin
needs, there is help at hand when it
comes to taking the red out of rosacea.

Behind the Brand
JUVENATE
Beauty Pioneer
Marie August is a true beauty pioneer, who has always been fearless when it comes to leading the way around the impact
of ingredients on skin. As with many successful business journey’s, Marie’s determination was fuelled by her own personal
skincare experiences.
"I began my personal crusade to find
the perfect skin solutions 12 years ago
after the birth of my second child. My
skin took a serious turn for the worse,
and I struggled to find any products or
treatments that worked."
Having trained as a dispensary technician
and spent time in a naturopath practice,
Marie had a deep interest in prescriptive
and natural ingredients and how they
worked most effectively together.
She began researching the best
ingredients worldwide and developing
creams until she found a solution
that addressed her own skin issues
more effectively than anything else.
Her commitment to non-toxins was
deep-rooted throughout her research
and remains critical to all product
development at Juvenate.
From small beginnings with a personal
passion for the skincare industry, to
growing her brand Juvenate into New
Zealand’s largest clinic-only range, the
evolution of both Marie and her beauty
brand is remarkable.
Marie has always been driven to show
how powerful the right ingredients can
be, in creating positive change in both
skin and self-confidence.
Based on Skin Regenerative Therapy,
Juvenate is a niche skincare range with
products specifically formulated to
restore skin with long-term results.
"We go beyond barrier repair and target
the energy mechanisms of skin cells;
offering regenerative solutions that
correct cellular and molecular damage,"
says Marie.
Marie is a solid believer in people not
over-spending on multiple products.
With this in mind, each Juvenate product
offers multiple effects in one.
"Plus we only use clean, pure
formulations with ingredients that do
no harm to body or environment, while
never compromising on results.”
Juvenate launched in 2018 with an initial
group of five products: Revitalising
Cleanser, Relief Crème, Rejuvenate
Crème, Resurfacing Serum (now
UpLift) and Cell Renewal Booster (now
Reactivating Serum).
Fast forward to 2023 and Juvenate is
highly sought after, stocked in 80 clinics
nationwide with a swag of awards and
recognition along the way.
BeautyNZ finds out more:
Q. A.
What are non-negotiables in terms
of the Juvenate brand?
We are very ingredients focused -
unique ingredients are researched
and tested for their individual
impact and outcome. Every
ingredient must combine effectively
and efficiently to ensure optimal
results.
A simple regime is essential - less is
more. Maximising the effectiveness
of every product so clients can
simplify or amplify their skincare
regime and still be assured of
optimal results.
Strictly no questionable chemicals.
We are committed to only using
clean, pure formulations with
ingredients that don't harm the
body or environment, and also
benefit and nourish skin.
Q. What are some of Juvenate’s hero
ingredients and why are these are
so important?
Powerful formulations are the
A. backbone of Juvenate and our
ingredients are everything. Every
ingredient is researched and tested
not only for its individual quality
and impact, but also for how well it
combines with other ingredients.
Our formulations are 100% active
and we only include ingredients
that are beneficial to the skin to
work at a cellular level beneficially
optimising cellular activity to gain
optimal results.
Some of our most popular products
include Juvenate ReSculpt,
Reactivating Serum, B-Hydrated and
Rejuvenate Crème.
Our B-Hydrated 4D is formulated
with Hyaluronic acid and Vitamin
B3. HA is well-known in the
industry for it benefits in topical
formulations. It is critical to the
functional well-being of normal
physiological processes of the
skin. We choose to work with four
different weights of HA, which
signal different cellular responses
in the skin, triggering various
pathways of healing and repair.
With differing levels of penetration
into the skin, we can trigger
different physiological pathways,
notably protection via antioxidant
effects, hydration, stabilisation
of the tissue matrix structure
and cellular repair. This makes
B-Hydrated 4D particularly good as
a homecare treatment and also as a
microneedling optimiser in clinic.
Our Reactivating Complex taps
into the diverse effects of GHK-cu,
along with cellular communication
optimisers. GHK-cu has been
clinically proven to improve the
skin’s antioxidant defence by
supporting SOD activity, quenching
toxic products of lipid peroxidation,
and modifying expression of
multiple antioxidant-related genes.
GHK-cu was found to switch
cellular gene expression from a
diseased state to a healthier state.
Capable of up and down-regulating
genes, essentially resetting
DNA to a healthier state. With
clinical studies showing increased
efficacy in conjunction with both
microneedling and Red LED.
Our latest release, ReSculpt is
an innovative body treatment,
utilising state of the art actives that
enhance adipocyte detoxification,
activate synthesis of Type 1 muscle
fibres, and support mitochondrial
resilience, ensuring an effective
treatment for cellulite, lax skin and
stretchmarks.
One of our most complex formulas
– Rejuvenate Crème offers all the
validated benefits of Vitamins A,
B3, C along with peptides and
cosmedical actives that correct and
support skin. Including actives that
support Sirtuin activity (Enzymes
known as the body’s longevity
genes) and NAD+ synthesis within
cell – ensuring our mitochondria

JUVENATE
What is some of the best business
advice you have ever received or
would pass on:
Passion is what keeps us going but
A. persistence is what gets us over the
line.
• Never give up and don’t listen to
the naysayers.
• Honesty and integrity are
paramount.
• Always create, never copy.
Q. What might people be surprised to
know about Juvenate?
A.
The extent that we go to uphold
our integrity among a very
marketing-focused industry. We
have changed the perception within
clinic demonstrating how active our
range is and that is all due to the
integrity and high potency of the
range which sets us apart from all
other ranges.
We are so passionate about making
changes and staying credible in an
industry that seems to be based
around marketing and images
(smoke and mirrors).
Our range is highly active and
needs to be prescribed by qualified
beauty therapists to minimise risk
of reactions. So we are truly cliniconly.
We also choose to not sell our
products to the public ourselves,
rather directing enquiries to our
valued clinics.

SPOTLIGHT
Brow Boss
When it comes to framing people’s faces, and all things lash
and brow related, Lizzy Kacy has found her absolute passion.
The founder of Lash Aesthetica has built a successful
business on a foundation of hard work, a thirst for
knowledge and a dedication to excellence.
Based in Northland on the Tutukaka Coast, Lash Aesthetic
specialises solely in lash and brow services, as well as
training others who share Lizzy’s passion and love of
entrepreneurship.
BeautyNZ finds out more:
Q. When and why Lash Aesthetica
was founded?
A. Pure, soul burning passion ran
through my entire being for the
first time in my life when I picked
up the lash extension and brow
tweezers eight years ago. With an
ignited fire, a feeling of purpose
and unwavering motivation that
I had never experienced in my
life before, I gained a set of new
eyes where I could see endless
possibilities to grow, to learn, to
push myself, to live a successful
life. All while helping others feel
externally beautiful and in turn,
internally confident. Seeing the
overwhelming joy on a client's
face when they look in the mirror
for the ‘big reveal’ is incredibly
gratifying.
Q. What treatments and products
are at the heart of Lash
Aesthetica?
A. I wholeheartedly believe in the
power of focusing on a selected
range of services and doing
them extremely well, which is
why my comprehensive brow
maintenance services are
executed with attention to detail,
including the final styling element
where I use premium products;
RevitaLash Hi-Del Brow Gel to
create fullness and hold, and
RevitaLash Hi-Def Pencil to create
depth and shape definition. I
proudly offer these products,
ensuring my clients have access
to the best tools for maintaining
their brows to perfection at
home.
Q. What sparked your original
interest in the beauty industry?
A. I was obsessed with sculpting
and crafting my own lashes and
brows. My friends would ask me
to fill in their brows, because they
would see how much care and
attention to detail I put into mine.
I loved how I felt when I was
doing a brow or lash makeover.
The rest is history.
When I first entered the beauty
industry I offered lashes, brows,
spray tans, body waxing and
nails. But within three months
I knew that I only really loved
and had a passion for lashes and
brows. So I followed my heart,
dropped tall the other treatments
and dived head, heart, and soul
first into specialising in lashes
and brows. It was a bold and
crazy thing for someone to do
eight years ago.
Q. How you first got involved in the
industry training?
A. The Lash and Brow industry
presents opportunities
for entrepreneurship and
independence, alongside artistic
expression (what more could you
ask for?). This can be extremely
rewarding in multiple ways.
When I began training my staff
from scratch and the general
public requested to learn also,
I recognised my potential to
teach a lifelong skill set to others;
empowering them to gain the
knowledge and ability to offer
quality driven, high standard
services while taking autonomy
in their lives.
Q. What drives your passion for the
industry?
A. It’s fuelled by the opportunity to
impact clients' lives, students'
lives, and within the industry
itself; to set a benchmark of
excellence while elevating
standards.
Q. What aspect of the industry are
you most focused on?
A. Training others in lash and brow
artistry. My focus is to empower
aspiring lash and brow artists
who are seeking guidance in their
career, cultivating a community
of talented and confident artists
who are ready to make their own
mark in the industry.
My mission to empower,
educate and transform women's
lives through the portal of
entrepreneurship and lash and
brow artistry.
Q. What are some of the most
popular lash and brow
treatments at the moment?
A. Definitely at the top of the
list is a lash lift and tint. Lash
lifts are a low maintenance,
impactful enhancement to the
natural lash that requires the
client to consider their natural
lash health - which we love.
Q. What are some of your top tips
for at home lash and brow care?
A. Individual lash and brow care
needs vary, depending on
people’s lash and brow goals
and where they are starting
from. But here are some nonnegotiables:
• Avoid rubbing, picking or
pulling your lashes/brows
• Use RevitaLash and RevitaBrow
daily
• Gently cleanse your lash and
brow area daily
• Throw the tweezers out!
Commit to regular, professional
maintenance appointments
• Avoid using harsh products on
these sensitive areas. Instead,
invest in products that
work with you, not against you
• Follow your professionally
advised aftercare
• Brushing through your
lashes and brows with a
spoolie is simple, yet so
effective.
Q. What are some of your fave
brands to work with and why?
A. I love that the RevitaLash
Cosmetics range works with
lashes and brows, and not
fiercely against them. All the
products are also smudge and
transfer proof but simultaneously
are easy to clean off at the end
of the day. My personal routine
includes the use of; RevitaLash
Lash Curler, Dual Ended Mascara,
Define Eyeliner and Hi-Def Brow
Gel (usually clear), Hi-Def Brow
Pencil (cool brown).
I am currently loving Bored Brows
wax, which is a great alternative
to a brow gel. Brow wax is a
denser product that allows for
creating a laminated effect. It’s
basically ‘brow lamination in a
pot’.
My gal Zoe from Tuesday Skin
has recently gotten me onto
Dermaviduals, which is pure and
active, and free from fragrances,
parabens and all of that nasty
stuff. Dermaviduals adheres to
the philosophy of corneotherapy,
for beautiful, balanced skin. I love
that.

Q.
What you do for your own lash
care/strength?
A. My eyelashes live their best
life - they are taking care of like
royalty.
1) Only using premium, quality
products.
2) Daily application of
RevitaLash Advanced Eyelash
Conditioner
3) On non-makeup days I use
Elleebana's Elleeplex lash lift
aftercare treatment, even
though I don’t have a lash lift.
It’s like applying a clear, juicy,
delicious smelling mascara,
formulated to protect and
restore the lash
4) Gently cleanse my eye area
daily to remove any traces of
makeup, buildup, or debris
5) I do my best to not rub my
eye area - we want those
lashes to stay in for as long as
possible!
Q. What is important to you when it
comes to training?
A. Within the training I provide, it’s
important that I am incorporating
empowerment, for my students
to gain confidence, motivation
and a sense of ownership over
their creative and entrepreneurial
journey. Knowledge is power,
which is why students are
delivered the most up-to-date
comprehensive information.
Support is another nonnegotiable,
and I offer six weeks
of ongoing support, posttraining.

Q. What are some of the most
valuable/important lash and
brow lessons you would pass
on?
A. See a professional for your lash
and brow services! Put the
tweezers down, do not touch
your brows at home (especially
not with those DIY kits, ekkkkkk),
find an artist who is reputable
that you can trust and stick with,
voice your concerns and highlight
the areas you would like to
change with your artist, as well as
letting them know what you love
about your brows that you don’t
want to change! Communication
is key. When we have clarity
around the wants and do-notwant,
we can create a plan and
work towards your dream brow.
Q. What you do for yourself for selfcare
or pampering?
A. My ultimate selfcare afternoon
would look like a walk along a
quiet beach followed by a deep
tissue massage, Thai food, and
then tucking myself away to read
a book.
Q. Some of the most valuable
business lessons you’ve learned?
A. To focus on the process, not
just the end result. It is within
the journey that ‘mistakes’ are
made and challenges are faced,
which ultimately lead you to
grow and evolve as a business
owner. Embrace challenges as
opportunities for growth.
Q. What might people be surprised
to know about you?
A. That I grew up in the far North
(Kerikeri and Hokianga), and that I
have five siblings. Also that I love
to surf - I guess it’s the polarity of
the stereotype, of my business
versus my hobbies. People might
also be surprised to know that
I left school as soon as I could.
But despite being a ‘drop out’, I
carved my own unconventional
path to success. Proving that at
any moment in your life, with
resilience and determination, you
can overcome any obstacle and
be whoever you want to be.

Q. We all have our skincare ‘holy
grail’ products. What are yours,
and why do they work so well
for you?
A. I would have to say our Bf
Restore Face & Body Serum. It’s
one of our OG three and has
proven itself over and over again
to help any skin condition that
requires soothing, calming and
hydrating. It’s a great skin saviour
and all-round hero product
recommended for all skin types
and conditions, for both the face
and body.
Q. As a skincare expert, what are
some of the most common
mistakes you see people
making when it comes to
taking care of their skin?
A. That’s a great question; over
exfoliation is a big one and over
applying/layering a multitude of
products.
Q. Biologi is known for its
innovative approach to skincare.
Can you give us a sneak peek
at any exciting new products or
technologies Biologi is working
on?
A. We’ve just launched our Bio
cellulose sheet masks here in
New Zealand. We are super
proud of these high performing
masks which are made from
superior and fully compostable
coconut fibres. It’s these fibres
that provide a quality strong and
pliable mask with exceptional
hydration qualities. Along with
the super hydration skin benefits,
our exceptional plant extracts
help deliver a choice of three
masks that are hydrating and
targeted for a range of skin goals.
We do have some other product
developments in the work, which
I can’t really reveal yet, but stay
tuned!
Q. What role does self-care play
in your life, and how do you
incorporate it into your daily
routine?
A. I have a simple but targeted daily
skincare regime that consists of
cleanse, serum and oil. I wear
a SPF daily, exfoliate and apply
a mask about once a week and
use a gua sha regularly. I’m an
early riser, so love watching the
sunrise, going to the gym and
walking my two dogs Ruby and
Kiwi. I try to take time out of
hectic schedule to make space
for myself and love a good
shower – that’s where some of
my best ideas come from!
Q. What are some of your favourite
non-skincare-related beauty
products or rituals?
A. I love to gua sha regularly and
I also love facial massage or
‘face yoga’ which can have
such a positive impact on the
skin and your face, especially
if you are feeling puffy or the
skin is looking dull. I am also
an avid user of medical grade
LED. I highly recommend LED
treatments to everyone because
they can help treat a range of
skin concerns and goals.
Q. If you could only use three
skincare products for the rest of
your life, which ones would you
choose and why?
A. Biologi Bf Restore serum would
be my first choice. There’s a
reason we sell one every 15
mins all around the world (it’s
really that good!) I also can’t
live without a good oil. So if I
had to choose one it would be

not too heavy and it’s amazing

SKIN
What happens to
skin in winter?
Just because it’s winter, doesn’t mean it’s time to lighten up on the SPF.
Protect your skin year round with equal dedication. We’ve put together
some of our recommended SPF choices, many of which are hydrating and
moisturusing, as well as delivering protection from the rays.
Winter is notorious for wreaking havoc on skin, often leaving
people with dry, red - and sometimes irritated - skin.
Most of us have experienced this not-very-fun trio of skin
issues during winter.
Beachfox SPF50
Refreshing and invigorating, this SPF50+

and smells delicious, we well as being cruelty
free and vegan. Skindepot.nz
Why does skin go dry,
red and sensitive during
winter?
Winter skin often has a compromised
skin barrier, which makes it drier, more
sensitive and often results in redness
(an inflammatory response). In winter,
the air tends to be drier and colder,
which can have a significant impact on
your skin. The cold temperatures and
low humidity levels can cause your
skin to lose moisture and become dry,
itchy, and flaky. This can be particularly
problematic for people who already
have dry or sensitive skin. Add in heaters
in the rooms you sit in and with wind
and winter can be absolutely brutal on
the skin.
How can we combat these
changes?
The several tricks to looking after skin in
winter conditions:
Protect your skin from UV rays.
Given that UVA (aging rays) are present
in winter too, that means protecting
your skin every day, year-round. UVA
– the sun’s aging rays are there from
sun up to sun down and they also
penetrate glass. Given that UV exposure
is estimated to account for 80% of
premature skin aging, a broad-spectrum
sunscreen should be the cornerstone of
every skincare regime.
Avoid showers or baths that are too
hot.
While taking a hot shower or bath can
feel like the only thing you want to do
in winter, it can unfortunately have

negative effects on the skin. When
water is too hot, it can remove the
natural oils and moisture from the skin,
leaving it dry, itchy, and irritated. The
heat can also cause the blood vessels
in the skin to dilate, which can lead to
redness, inflammation, and a burning
or stinging sensation. Same goes for
spending too long in front of a heater. If
your skin does feel like it has a damaged
barrier function, look to products that
are going to nourish and repair irritable
and dry skin.
Avoid putting things on the skin that
can irritate or dry it out.
The most common culprit is soap
(because of its high pH), but there’s a
host of other products and ingredients
that can dry skin out. Hint: Tight and
red skin is never a good thing. If you
are using a product that feels like it
takes off layers of your face, put it down
immediately. While it might make you
feel like you’ve cleansed thoroughly, it's
actually doing more harm than good.
Instead of soap or harsh stripping
products, opt for a gentle cleanser or
a soap-free face wash that gives skin
a gentle yet thorough wash without
stripping it of its natural oils.
Use moisturising ingredients which
help the skin to retain water.
There are three types of moisturising
ingredients which can either attract
water (humectant), form a smooth
film on the skin (emollient) or block
water loss from the skin (occlusive).
In winter, you will need a ‘heavier’
moisturiser which has more emollients
and occlusive ingredients. ‘Heavier’” is
not a scientific term, but often you can
feel whether a moisturiser sticks around
for a while after application (heavy) or
it feels like there is nothing there. Not
the most scientific way of choosing a
moisturiser for winter, but practically
it usually works. These moisturising
products may come in the form of
creams or oils. The form doesn’t matter,
only the function does.
Use ingredients that help the skin
improve its natural ability to retain
more moisture like lactic acid,
gluconalactone and Vitamin B3.
Drink plenty of water and eat a
balanced diet.
These simple things can also help keep
your skin healthy and hydrated.

Keeping your books in the green
Tips on how to combat rising costs for
your salon, spa or clinic.
Using the reporting available to you in your
salon software is crucial to understanding
where you’re at and what you need to do in
order to reach your revenue goals.
For example, if you want to do a promotion
to drive retail sales, how are you currently
choosing which product to discount? Are
you just choosing one randomly?
Don’t leave the success of your promotion
up to chance; run a report in your salon
software to show you the top-selling
products, this will show you which products
are loved by your clients and therefore likely
to be purchased. Then all you have to do is
choose a product with a high-profit margin.
This means you can safely decide on a
discount that makes the offer attractive
to your clients while maintaining a healthy
profit for your business.
One way to align staff with your goals
and motivate them is by using targets.
If you want to increase revenue by
improving retail sales or rebooking rates,
set achievable targets with your staff so
they can work towards tangible goals. By
doing this, you show your staff that they’re
making a difference towards the overall
business’s success. Your salon software
should allow you to set targets for your
staff so they can access their own metrics
and track their progress.
When you work together towards a
common goal it brings focus into your
vision of what you want your salon to be,
and when you share your success with
your team, it makes everyone feel good.
This promotes hard-working staff that
are happier and boosts the overall salon
culture.

By
Kamrin Hira
As the year progresses, many hair
and beauty businesses are feeling the
effects of rising costs of materials, rent
and wages. You’re not alone if you’re
struggling to maintain your profitability
while keeping prices affordable for your
clients.
Here are three strategies you can use at
your salon, spa or clinic to help combat
rising costs and keep your books in the
green.
Increase your salon’s
efficiency
As they say, ‘time is money’ and that rings
true for our industry especially. One way
to combat rising costs is to increase your
efficiency by utilising what you have around
you. Your salon software should have many
features that can automate processes such
as stocktaking, saving you and your team
time, and you might not even realise it!
Take a moment to look at all the features
it has to offer that you aren’t using, and
you might be surprised. By utilising your
salon software to its full potential, you can
save time on admin-heavy tasks and spend
more time on the floor, increasing revenue!
Maybe you’ve been doing your stocktakes
manually all these years and you realise
your software can generate a list of
products sold in the last month to send to
your supplier to re-order, and suddenly your
stocktake takes seconds instead of hours.
Or, you spend some time setting up some
marketing automation to send messages
to your clients if they haven’t rebooked
in a certain number of weeks. Suddenly
your apprentices can spend more time
shadowing a stylist instead of sitting at the
computer sending out messages to your
clients. Investing some time now to look at
your software and make the most out of it
can potentially save you hundreds of hours
a year.
Motivate your team to
success
Your team is the major driving force for
the business’s success and keeping them
motivated and aligned with your goals can
hugely increase efficiency at your salon
and make your staff happy, and happy staff
means happy customers.
So there you have it; three ways you
can look at combating rising costs and
increasing your revenue. By adopting these
strategies, you can not only survive but
thrive in the face of rising costs and get
your business into a healthy position for
the future.

TIPS FOR MANAGING
THE AWKWARD
‘R’ CONVERSATION
Business
Tips for Talking With
Someone About Their
Relationship
• Never assume you know why
someone is getting a divorce,
or breaking up, even if they’re
telling you why. There is always
more history, so it is important
to not respond with judgement
to them or the other person in
their relationship.
BITES
• Remember, good people can
behave badly.
It is well understood that romantic
relationships are central to human function
and an area of our lives that people naturally
place a lot of focus on. It is also human nature
to want to talk and share details about our lives.
Sometimes talking to someone who is not in
your inner circle can feel free and liberating, a
bit like visiting a therapist.
Not surprisingly, beauty professionals
are often privy to some of the most
intimate details in a client’s life, from
the goings on of their children, jobs,
to relationships. Often, clients will
confide more in their beauty therapist
than their own family and friends. For
the recipient of this information, it
can sometimes be difficult to know
how to manage the conversation,
when it becomes about a relationship
breakdown or breakup.
It’s important for everyone to
remember, including the person
listening, that it is good for people to
talk, so if they want to, you should let
them talk. However make sure that you
also read the signs. There will be some
clients going through a difficult time
who just won’t want to say a thing.
Increased Stress On
Couples
Many people are under extreme
emotional and financial pressures due
to factors following Covid, the rising
cost of living and inflation, mortgage
rate increases and the recent weatherrelated
events. All of these have placed
stress on relationships. Many are either
at breaking point, stressed or fragile and
this trend is not defined by postcode.
The Demise Of A
Relationship
Naturally, it makes sense that the end
of a marriage or long-term relationship
has a significant impact on all aspects
of people’s wellbeing and life. A breakup
can leave people in a place of bitterness,
resentment and of course, anger. It is
also one of the most stressful things
that a person can go through. The
sense of loss and identity that men and
women feel after a breakup is largely
the same. We assume it’s different for
each because we all manage breakups
differently. When a relationship ends,
it doesn't mean the person or couple
has failed, it can be more learning about
themselves.
Divorce
Divorce for any couple has the same
issues, but a high conflict divorce
comes with a lot more intensity. Some
of the main issues involve:
• Communication
• Managing emotions
• Control
• Mental health
Other factors which come into play
include, managing boundaries, trauma,
organisation and the ability to make
educated, effective and realistic
decisions. For those couples with
children together, there is co-parenting
to navigate as well as effects on the
children and wider family.
Specific fears most people face when
divorcing include future financial
insecurity or lack of financial literacy
as a single person, coupled with the
potential loss of the family home and
a change in lifestyle. There is also the
impact of divorce on children, including
the sense of loss or failure of the family
unit. For some people, there may be a
religious or social stigma or the threat
of domination. Many people feel a
sense of abandonment, inferiority,
betrayal or being ignored. Another
common fear post-divorce is being
alone and never finding someone else
to share life with again.
A relationship breakup is different
to a divorce. People who date for a
long time and then break up can go
through very intense heartbreak, but
it is not a divorce. In a divorce there is
a lot more to consider including the
legal side, finances, parenting and
custody and division of everything.
There is also the question, can they
afford to live apart? For those in a de
facto relationship, the same issues in a
divorce still apply.
Divorce is often seen as chaotic but it
can be the opportunity for a healthier
household. Unfortunately, it is people
themselves who create divorce
conflict, not the legal process.
Some interesting divorce related
statistics include:
• Many people do not do anything
about their relationship issues for six
years and by that time the horse has
bolted.
• Women tend leave relationships
emotionally two years before they
leave physically.
• 70% of divorces are initiated by
women.
Recognising Men and
Women Are Different
Men and women use a different
standard to measure whether their
marriages are working. The adage
that “Men are from Mars and women
are from Venus” is true – men prefer
action such as working out, going out
and about, looking for that rebound;
whereas women prefer talking about the
breakup with friends and sharing how
they feel.
New Relationships Either
Inside or Outside an
Existing One
What is good to know is that women are
by nature more emotional than men and
often look for the emotional connection,
with someone when they start a
relationship. Men tend to focus more
on the physical – how they get on, what
they have in common and the bedroom,
are usually top priorities. Women will
have these as priorities too, but near the
top is also the emotional connection.
An affair by definition is an act of
infidelity that occurs within a committed
relationship. It usually includes
passionate, emotional or physical
connection. An affair or act of infidelity
is fundamentally a betrayal of trust and
crossed boundaries. Infidelity, whether
it be physical or chatting to someone
frequently online when in a relationship,
is often viewed by people of the
opposite sex differently. It also depends
on agreements within a relationship of
the created boundaries. With this every
relationship is different.
• How to manage emotions
is often the hardest factor
in a relationship or marriage
breakup and talking releases
emotion.
• Don’t talk about them behind
their back or repeat all that you
hear.
• Do not enter the ‘blame game’
with them.
• Recognise that there are many
stages of grief to work through,
when a marriage breaks apart.
Disbelief/denial, sadness,
anger and depression and
acceptance.
• Control your body language –
you don’t want to be perceived
as negative and reactionary to
what they are telling you.
• Pass no judgement. You may
be the only person they feel
comfortable with in terms of
opening up and sharing their
story/issues.
• Put yourself in their shoes – if
this was you, how would you
be feeling? People usually feel
vulnerable, confused, lost,
exposed and inadequate along
with feelings of failure and
desperation. Think about how
you would like to be treated if
you were in this situation.
• Stay focused, positive and
neutral as much as you can.
Try to be empathetic and
supportive but remember they
are a client.

Tips for Your Own Wellbeing
In my years in the hair and beauty
space, I have journeyed alongside
many clients. The highs and lows that
become life changing events. In our
industry, working so closely with people
you are always talking and connecting
with clients, that connection helps us
be good at what we do.
The classic line ‘you’re a hairdresser
and a therapist’ is true. The salon code,
which we follow, is that we provide
a safe place for all guests to enjoy
their experience. Clients will often
sit in my chair and share the depths
of a situation that may be happening
in their life, a sick family member, a
breakup or the arrival of a new baby.
We never share how many tissues
someone used.
For me the last few years have really
shone a light on how invaluable
connection is, physically, mentally
and emotionally. It is so important as
stylists and beauty service providers
To keep yourself centred and free from fluster, take a moment between clients
to breathe in and out deeply. Concentrate on expelling any negativity in your
mind and commit yourself to remaining calm and collected.
If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed with the burden of hearing a client’s
relationship issues, try to step away for a moment to collect yourself. Don’t
make it obvious; instead offer to fill their drink or tell them you need to grab
something.
Also, be clear on your boundaries – remember that they are your client and
you are a professional. For example, if they keep texting/calling you about their
situation, know that this is a different scenario than with a friend.
No matter the subject of conversation, always keep the banter light and on the
positive side. Try to remain upbeat, although empathetic. Your clients are not
there for you to gossip, or to push your perspective or beliefs. Keep the focus
of the conversation and your attention on the client and stay neutral on all
subject matters.
Exude positivity. Those who are able to create a genuinely happy work
environment will tend to attract other positive people, including clients.
It’s natural for most humans to pick up on any “vibes” – whether positive or
negative – within their surroundings. Your clients will appreciate the experience
and your positiveness will be infectious to your staff or co-workers.

Wellbeing
The beauty of
As we head into colder air
temperatures and winter months the
harsh weather and indoor heating
can wreak havoc on your complexion,
leading to dryness, flakiness and even
breakouts.
It's key to have some skincare rituals
that will leave you still glowing like you
do in the summer months.
By incorporating rituals into your daily
routine, it can help ensure your skin
continues to thrive during these colder
months.
Your skin is the largest organ of the
body and acts as the primary barrier of
external elements, also helping prevent
dehydration of the body. Skin needs
water to maintain elasticity, and help
keep it looking and feeling smooth and
youthful.
Always make hydration a
priority
Drink water
It’s so simple, but over the winter
months this ritual can lessen. Water
works with the skin to help keep it
hydrated from the inside out, by pulling
fluid from the capillary blood flow in
the skin. If there isn't enough water to
pull from, skin can effectively dry out.
With cells and tissues mostly made up
of water, water improves blood flow, so
if you’re feeling thirsty, usually you are
already dehydrated. Drink consistently
throughout the day so your body
doesn't get the chance to become
dehydrated.
Exfoliate skin
Getting rid of dead skin allows your
hydrating skincare products to
penetrate and readily absorb into skin.
When you have dull and tired looking
skin, exfoliating can remove outer/
dead skin cells on the surface. This also
encourages circulation, keeping skin
looking vibrant and hydrated. Regular
exfoliation helps boost cell renewal
allowing new skin cells to grow more
optimally, making for fresher, healthier,
and hydrated skin.
Apply a good face oil
Face oils that are rich in
antioxidants, vitamins and
fatty acids help to nourish and
promote cellular regeneration
of the skin. Oils like rosehip,
argan and jojoba are just a few
to name that add a boost of
deep hydration. It’s best to
use face oils straight after a
shower as your pores with be
open from the warm water
and soak it in as skin food.
Spritz a high quality
rosewater throughout the day
The science behind rosewater
for hydration is that it contains
antioxidants and nutrients that
help to balance the skin’s pH,
while soothing inflammation.
It's rich in micro molecules which
easily penetrate into the skin,
offering increased hydration and
cellular repair. This should be the
all-round go to product that you
keep in your bag, on your desk
and at home.
RITUALS
Elevate your routines into meaningful
rituals and experience more joy in
everything you do and you will really
glow from the inside out.
Get quality sleep
While you sleep, your body repairs and regenerates itself, repairing
damaged skin cells. While you sleep one of the processes is replenishing
its water stores which translates to hydrated skin. Our skin is 64% water
and if you don't get enough sleep this balance can be disrupted leading to
dry, dull looking skin. When we sleep our blood vessels open up and with
our decreased heart rate, the increased blood to the skin means that the
nutrients and oxygen are delivered to the skin cells. All promoting healthy,
glowing skin.
Try to make all of these routines into meaningful rituals, by thinking and
acknowledging while doing them, that you are feeling like you are glowing
from the inside out.
When you drink water visualise your blood flowing beautifully around your
body and your cells and tissues being nourished. When exfoliating imagine
all the dead skin and emotions are washing away and a new you is
emerging. When applying the face oil, give yourself a little face
yoga massage. When you spritz your rosewater, say a daily
empowering affirmation as you spritz.
Elevate your routines into meaningful rituals and experience
more joy in everything you do and you will really glow from the
inside out.

Five ways to manage
skin purging
THE GUT-IMMUNE
connection
Consuming foods rich in zinc as well
as vitamins D and A are also essential
to strengthen our intestinal barrier,
and play a main role in the functioning
of our immune system. Certain herbs
and nutrients have also been shown to
support gut health.

Wellbeing
Have you ever started new skin supplements and noticed subtle skin changes?
That adjustment period where your skin may look slightly unsettled before
you get that clear, healthy-looking skin?
This may be down to the influx of all
those good nutrients. When the body
gets the right nutrition, it can kick start
certain ‘clean-up’ processes that help
get rid of any impurities. Skin is one of
the organs that the body uses to get
rid of these impurities. This is a good
thing – it means what you are doing is
working.
Skin purging can occur when you start
a new skincare product or a few weeks
after you’ve started.
Each person is different and not
everyone will experience skin purging
or the same symptoms e.g.: you may
notice differences in your skin or
energy levels. Remember skin health
is a journey and results can take up to
12 weeks, just like any other lifestyle
changes you incorporate including
going to the gym or a new diet.
The good news is our skin researchers
recommend incorporating the five
habits below to support your skin and
wellbeing during this time.
1. Eat a portion of cruciferous
vegetables every day
Cruciferous vegetables are high in fibre
and good sources of phytonutrients,
which are key in helping clear the
impurities from your skin. Cruciferous
vegetables include:
Broccoli
Brussel sprouts
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Collard greens
Bok choy
Radish
Turnips
All these food sources also help with
regular bowel movements, which help
support the body in removing toxins.
2. Don’t give up, consistency is key
If you do experience any skin
changes, it’s important to not give up.
Consistency is key for results when
taking supplements. Any skin purging
usually lasts a few days to a few weeks
so keep preserving – your skin will
thank you for it!
3. Drink water
During the skin purging process, your
skin may appear drier. Increase your
intake of water to ensure your skin
is getting the moisture it needs. We
recommend you drink 1-2 litres of
water a day to flush the toxins out your
body.
4. Mix it up and move
Gentle exercise is a great way to use
up your daily fuels as well as stress
hormones released during the day.
Simple switch ups like walking during
your lunch break, following a tenminute
yoga session on YouTube or
dancing with family or friends can help
encourage lymphatic drainage.
5. Include a variety of vegetables in
your diet
When adding vegetables to your
meals, remember to add some variety
to ensure your body is getting a wide
range of vitamins and nutrients for
overall wellbeing.
For radiant and glowing skin, the key is
patience and consistency. It’s a journey
and any new lifestyle changes you
make; results don’t happen overnight.
If you do notice any changes to your
skin – this is normal. Remember to
include a wide variety of cruciferous
vegetables every day, drink 1-2 litres
of water daily, you can introduce new
supplements slowly and you’ll soon be
on your way to beautiful, glowing skin.

Nutrition Programme NZ
As we head into winter, we often find
ourselves combating the seasonal
onslaught of ills and chills. Surprisingly,
one of the most effective ways to
bolster our immunity lies within us –
specifically, our gut.
Recent research has shed light on the
intimate connection between the health
of our gut and the immune system,
revealing the pivotal role a balanced
microbiome plays. With approximately
70% of our immune system residing
in the gut, nurturing this internal
ecosystem becomes paramount in
building a strong and resilient defence.
The gut microbiome is a complex
community of bacteria, viruses, and
fungi which not only aids digestion but
also plays a vital role in the function
of our immune system and how we
respond to infection.
Unfortunately, factors like poor diet,
stress, antibiotics, and even lack of sleep
can upset the delicate balance of our
gut bacteria, compromising immune
function and leaving us susceptible to
illnesses.
When it comes to supporting a healthy
and robust gut, a well-balanced diet is
key. High fibre foods such as broccoli,
kumara, legumes, and wholegrains, as
well as fermented foods like kefir and
sauerkraut can all contribute to a thriving
gut microbiome.
Glutamine, an amino acid found in
foods like meat, fish, and beans, aids in
repairing the intestinal lining. Herbs such
as slippery elm and marshmallow have
soothing properties that can alleviate
digestive discomfort as well as support
healthy bowel movements and the
diversity of gut bacteria.
Beyond nutrition, other lifestyle factors
significantly impact gut function. Among
these, quality sleep is a vital element,
allowing our bodies to repair and
regenerate. Research has shown that
insufficient sleep can significantly disrupt
gut bacteria balance and jeopardise the
immune response.
The gut plays a vital

Similarly, chronic stress also poses
a significant threat, with prolonged

Incorporating stress management
techniques like mindfulness, gentle
exercise, and prioritising sleep can all
positively influence gut health.

Simple skincare:
For all
University schoolfriends Rishija Dolli and Georgina Niu are proud founders of Rich & George, a New Zealand
made skincare brand dedicated to simplicity.
Crafted by leading chemists, the two step Rich & George formula was three years in the making and are the
result of Rish and Georgina’s determination to be part of a new age of skincare.
Centred around two products, Clean Slate Cleanser and Get Set Moisturiser, the Rich & George collection is
founded on the conviction that simple is best.
BeautyNZ finds out more about this
New Zealand founded, designed and
made brand:
Q. A.
Q.
A.
What are non negotiables around
your products?
Our ‘non-negotiables’ is that all of
our products are centred around the
idea of simplicity and accessibility.
Simplicity: We understand that
we’re not the only skincare brand
out there – it’s a highly saturated
market. For us, it was essential that
we create something that declutters
the numerous products out there,
instead of adding to the chaos.
Accessibility: In addition, the market
can be convoluted. It can be hard
and confusing to keep up with the
latest new products and trends.
When doing our research, we found
that it was mostly women who kept
on top of it. And while skincare isn’t
gendered - we felt that the marketing
and aesthetic of brands we saw was
very one sided. Men seem to draw
the short end of the stick here with
often muted dark colours and strong
musky scents and we feel like we’ve
moved past this now.
With those two values in mind, it
was essential for us to distil the
essentials into two simple products
that still did everything they needed
to do. We’re committed to using
natural and active ingredients
that serve a purpose and work
effectively together. Those ‘nonnegotiables’
filtered to every part of
our brand, the look and feel of our
tubes and packaging. We’ve opted
for a minimalist but bright look -
something we can see working on
everyone’s bathroom shelves whilst
also using eco-friendly packaging.
We want people of all genders,
ages and stages to feel comfortable
and excited to build R&G into their
daily routine. In the end, we believe
everyone deserves to look and feel
their best.
Q. What was the biggest hurdle prior
to launching your brand?
We definitely faced our fair share
of challenges when it came to
launching R&G, as any small
business does. The biggest challenge
was formulating our cleanser
and moisturiser to the standard
and efficacy we wanted. As avid
skincare users, we reviewed our own
routines and acknowledged that
the complicated 6–10 step routines
we have been accustomed was
Q.
time-consuming and expensive.
We wanted to instil all the benefits
into just the core basics. It took
numerous iterations over a few
years, working closely with our
chemists to perfect the products. We
wanted to ensure we had all the right
ingredients we were used to but that
they worked together effectively in
only two products.
It was 100% worth it to take that
time though as we can say with
confidence that we’re proud of the
outcome.
In addition, from a sustainability
aspect, we feel a strong duty
to minimise the environmental
impact of our operations. We were
particularly motivated to use fully
recyclable materials. While this took
longer to secure, we’re proud that
we use 100% sugarcane tubes which
is far more eco-friendly than oil
based plastic. It’s always a challenge
creating a company, particularly one
that is self-funded and focused on
using local suppliers, creatives and
designers where possible.
What's next in the Rich & George
journey?
For us, the R&G brand stands for
A. more than just a cleanser and
moisturiser. There’s something
refreshing about cutting back to the
bare basics again and cherishing a
more simple life.
Having grown up in New Zealand,
we feel very strongly about the
importance of sun protection and we
have hopes to formulate a beautiful
non-sticky, absorbent, protective
sunscreen that everyone can enjoy -
not as easy as it sounds!
Our hopes in the future are to
continue to create products that we
believe are the essentials and have
a decluttering and positive effect on
people’s lives.
Q.
A.
Q. What are any unexpected outcomes
from launching your brand?
Since launching Rich & George, we
have been overwhelmed by the
positive feedback we have received.
We’re especially grateful for the
reach our products have from those
that have tried our products and
have been pleasantly surprised at
the results. We’ve received many
messages from those in the 60+
age range who have shared with us
that they had previously given up on
finding a skincare routine that works
for them, but our simple, two-step
routine has made them believe it's
not too late to start taking care of
their skin.
Additionally, we have seen a shift
in the attitudes of men towards
skincare. Many men who previously
believed that skincare was
unnecessary or too time-consuming
have tried our products and become
converts. They appreciate the
simplicity of our routine and how it
fits easily into their busy lifestyles.
Many have expressed to us that they
love that our products "actually"
work, which is a testament to the
effectiveness of our high-quality
ingredients and simple approach to
skincare.
Overall, the unexpected outcomes
from launching Rich & George have
been incredibly positive. We are
thrilled to have helped so many
people discover the benefits of
taking care of their skin, and we look
forward to continuing to provide
simple and effective skincare
solutions.

Winter Nail TRENDS
As the cooler months have crept up
on us, we are starting to see a subtle
change in nail inspiration.
As previously predicted, the ‘milky
nails’ and notorious ‘glazed donut’ nails
continue to be a hit. However, simply
mixing up the base colour to create
different natural pearlescent look offers
a new twist on this mani. Milky, glazed,
vanilla: what are the nail trends trying to
tell us?
Enter ‘lip gloss nails’, which as the name
suggests is the nail version of lip gloss.
A simple light, sheer coat of colour with
a glossy finish, this is a versatile look for
any skin tone or outfit.
If the iHeartRadio awards or Met Gala is
anything to go by, then these minimal
yet chic looks continue to dominate the
hues for a glowy finish.
Coined by celebrity manicurist Tom
Bachik, the term rich-girl nails describe
‘perfectly manicured, perfectly polished,
medium-long to long, full-coverage
nude nails’; and that is exactly what we
are seeing.
French manicures have had
their comeback and are
only getting even
more desirable.
We are going
from a fun twist
of the look
to the ‘Micro
French’ look;
fine French
tips that make
hands and
nails look chic and elegant. You can also
apply this technique in a ‘reverse’ French
around the cuticle —just as simple and
stunning. It is certainly a way to make
the diamonds stand out as the shining
star of a hand.
In these cooler months, bolder colours
like icy blues, deep magentas, rusty
orange and reds, browns, navy and of
course a classic black come out. Kris
Kardashian is a huge fan of the short
black style, and she certainly does the
look justice. But if your clients just are
not feeling ready for that boldness, you
can always add a matte finish to soften
the look.
If they are though, then the cat’s eye
and the aura trend have been steadily
emerging. The metallics are always such
a great salon friendly option for that little
extra pizazz, whilst not being too time
consuming for your salon.
On the health side of things, winter is
often the hardest time for nails, as harsh
weather can dry them out, so ensure
you have cuticle oils and retail sized hand
creams in stock. Why not make a sign to
keep in view of the client with your ‘top
tips’ for keeping winter hands
and nails looking the best
they can.

INDUSTRY
Improving
awareness
around
gel polish allergies
Many professionals working in the nail and beauty industry
have invested heavily in training, with both time and money.
They choose the professional brand they work with carefully,
building their businesses with them. They remain committed
to their customers and to ensuring great results.
Appointments start with a consultation, and working together
with customers to ensure the results they desire.
The pandemic sparked a move towards beauty treatments
at home; gel nails was one of these. The manufacturers of
these ‘home brands’ offer the product to be branded as your
own. This saw new brands pop up which have not had the
investment or expertise that go into a longstanding brand; they
are often made with cheaper ingredients to keep costs down
and often don’t have third party testing due to the cost of this.
Nail brands that are exclusively for trained professionals have
often been in the market for many years. CND for instance
has its own laboratory, with a number of well-known nail
scientists having worked there for many years.
CND research, test, formulate and manufacture all product
in the USA, and have always set an unparalleled standard in
professional safety, education, and care. CND Shellac
launched in 2010, after five years of intense research,
development and safety assessments, CND trailblased the nail
industry with the patented Shellac gel polish system.
A hybrid of traditional nail polish and
UV gel polish, CND has a breathable
formula due to its network of tiny
tunnels that allow for oxygen and
cuticle oil to flow through to the nail
plate, keeping the coating and the nail
flexible and conditioned.
Ever since the release of Shellac,
CND has embarked on an ongoing
programme of continual research,
development and safety assessment,
in order to continue to give both
nail professionals and their clients
confidence that they are using a proven
brand with integrity and an outstanding
reputation. The best way to reduce the
likelihood of an allergy is to commit to
using the full system of the product and
this includes the UV/LED lamp.
The ingredient being hailed as the
culprit of some nail allergies has
methacrylate in the name. Although
this is normally seen in the ingredient
list, it is not just seeing this product in
the list that makes it an issue - it is the
percentage of this ingredient in the
product, and whether the matching UV/
LED lamp is being used, which is the
most important issue.
When product has been selected as the
correct coating for your nails, applied
correctly, and cured with the right lamp
this will provide a ‘proper cure’. Not
an under-cure and not an over-cure. If
another lamp is used, the product can
look like it is cured but it is not and after
the appointment or application time,
the product can seep.
Methacrylate is present in plastics and
in its physical form it is safe. It is the
liquid form that is more of any issue. If it
gets on the skin, it must be thoroughly
removed. With repeated exposure to
the skin by application (getting it on
the skin) or not using the right lamp,
seeping can occur that increases the
chance this allergy can appear, although
it does not happen to everybody.
The allergy can present as a severe itchy
rash anywhere on the body, not just
around nails and could happen to up to
2.4% of people. If symptoms appear,
visit your nail or beauty professional to
remove the gel polish then visit your
GP and arrange for allergy testing as
it is the only way to know for sure the
exact ingredient you are allergic to. It is
a lifelong allergy.
As far as safety goes, most professional
brands are as safe as they can be, due
to the level of investment and highly
trained scientists that create them. The
trained professionals will complete a
through consultation and recommend
a programme that is best for you and
your lifestyle. This combined with
the proper use and application of the
product minimises your chance of
developing an allergy.

INDUSTRY
Our advice is to stick with your nail
and beauty professional for nail
enhancements and coatings that
need to be cured, and choose your
beauty professional carefully: ensure
they provide you with a consultation
with your appointment and let them
know if you have any changes to
any medication or have noticed any
changes since your last appointment.
As with all aspects of the industry, good
hygiene, customer care and displayed
qualifications are good indicators of our
committed beauty professionals.
Testing is not compulsory but reputable brands do it to ensure
they know what is in the products. Some of these ‘home
brand’ ingredients can also cause issues as they heighten the
overall sensitivity of a customer. The users of these brands
would have no way of knowing what is truly in them and these
products should come with a warning that says ‘professional
use only’.
Most professionals would never work with these products
as they know they are lower quality, and unfortunately many
products that deem themselves to be the equivalent of true
professional products but are not, are sold to consumers.
These homecare gel systems were not offered from brands
that work exclusively with nail and beauty professionals,
although some of them, like CND, have a range that is
specifically designed for home use.
The CND offering is called Vinylux and it shares the same
colour palette as CND Shellac - however the formulation is
totally different. It dries in 8.5 minutes lasts up to a week, it
does not require a curing lamp.

she’s living in the shadow of his lost love Emily,
soon she’s obsessively comparing herself, trawling

and awaits the return of her husband Liam, little
realising that this is the last night they will spend
together as a family. Because tomorrow she will
be accused of Liam's murder. Accused of her

-and to get her children back.

Pomegranates &
Artichokes
by Saghar Setareh
Murdoch Books, $55
Sometimes a recipe book successfully manages
to achieve that rare alchemy, where the
unexpected ingredients sit joyously in your mind
long after the pages are turned. Pomegranates
& Artichokes is so much more than ‘just a
recipe book’; it is a unique and personal journey
through countries and their food cultures, as
seen through the eyes of author Saghar Setareh.
Generously peppered with Saghar’s own personal
photography, insights and experiences, each
recipe is infused with a special connection
or inspiration and it's impossible not to be
swept away by the meaningful memories. The
beautifully nuanced read serves with much
generosity the rich food culture of Iran, Italy and
the countries in between. With more than 80
glorious recipes celebrating the food of diverse
regions, it’s definitely deserving of space on your
coffee table for its readability, as well as in your
kitchen for the taste sensations within.
Flavour Kiss by
Belinda MacDonald
Penguin Random House, $50
Hot on the heels of popular website and bestselling
book Flavourbomb, comes the hotly
anticipated Flavour Kiss by Belinda MacDonald.
Having grown up on a lifestyle farm in Cambridge,
Belinda was inspired from a young age by her
mother and father's self-sufficiency - the garden,
plantings, foraging, milking the house cow, and
spending hours in the kitchen cooking. Belinda
appeared on TV's first My Kitchen Rules NZ series
in 2014 and co-won the title with her boldly
flavoured cooking combinations, showcasing
strong in-your-face flavours but also simplicity
and fierce healthiness. With a strong passion to
continue sharing her food inspiration, Flavour
Kiss generously shares more than 150 simple
keto-centric recipes full of goodness; from easy
mid-week meals to snack-alicious tapas for

The Glucose Goddess Method
by Jessie Inchauspé
Penguin Random House, $40
Food cravings, energy surges, mood swings;
we’ve all encountered them and often what we
eat is a major contributor to these issues and
more. Jessie Inchauspé is a biochemist, author
and founder of the Glucose Goddess movement
(with over 1.5 million followers on Instagram).
With her first book Glucose Revolution a number
one international bestseller, Jessie started
teaching everyone about the importance of
blood sugar and easy hacks to manage it. In
Ultra-Processed People
by Chris van Tulleken
Cornerstone Press, $40
Wait, I’m eating what? Let’s be honest, most of
us know the difference between what is deemed
healthy, whole food and ultra processed foods
(UPF). But much like the ingredients list of ultra
processed foods, there’s a seemingly endless
pool of murkiness just waiting to be discovered.
Put it this way, you’ll never look at most ice
cream with quite the same enthusiasm again.
Fast paced and eye-opening, Ultra Processed
People reveals the true cause of both obesity
and poor health; UPF. Author Chris van Tulleken
delves into the science and economics of UPF,
reframing obesity as a ‘commerciogenic disease’
driven by an unregulated industry and caused by
the consumption of knowingly harmful, addictive
substances. It is not a diet book, but it may
lead to weight loss; it is not an environmental
treatise, but it could help the planet. The book
uses evidence to propose real solutions to the
current obesity epidemic, both for policy makers
and for readers. Threaded throughout is a highly
engaging personal account of the author's own
confused relationship with UPF as a doctor,
parent and sibling.
The Glucose Goddess Method, she offers a
four-week, step-by-step plan to integrate simple,
science-proven strategies for steadying your
blood sugar into your everyday life. It comes
complete with 100+ delicious, easy recipes, an
interactive workbook and lots of tips and advice
from the Glucose Goddess community on how
to stay on track. Here’s to the delicious recipes,
reduced cravings and restored energy – with
gratitude.

EDUCATION

TRAINING
Training the
next generation
Growing up, Emma Craven was
fascinated with the world of beauty and
fashion. During high school, Emma was
introduced to the world of beauty therapy
through a trades programme, and in her
final year, completed HITO’s Beauty
Therapy Gateway programme.
This introduction to the industry solidified Emma’s passion,
and she knew that a career in beauty was the path for her.
Not wanting to move away from her family and friends to train
at a provider, Emma decided to find a local clinic willing to take
her on as an apprentice. Enrolling in a HITO apprenticeship
would allow Emma to stay near her loved ones, gain real skills
and industry experience, and work towards gaining the New
Zealand Certificate in Beauty Therapy (Level 4).
In her search, Emma came across Marlborough Medi Spa in
Renwick, Marlborough. Clinic owner Wendy Dixon was open to
the idea of training an apprentice and saw Emma’s passion and
potential from the day she was hired.
Marlborough Medi Spa owner Wendy Dixon
Emma Craven, beauty therapy apprentice
“If your apprentice finds that this industry is their passion, you
will have a therapist who is dedicated, keen, and willing to
learn,” says Wendy. “I believe that having a trade will take you
anywhere in the world, so for me it was important for Emma
to gain a qualification in beauty.”
Wendy believes that training in the real world of a busy clinic
allows the apprentice to understand how a clinic actually
works.
“Learning hands-on, in the clinic, is a fantastic way to realise
why beauty therapists require so much knowledge,” says
Wendy. “Watching your apprentice grow and succeed is very
rewarding, and it also makes you keep up with your own
continual learning journey while working in the industry.”
Throughout her apprenticeship, Emma has been trained
by experienced and professional beauty therapists in her
workplace. Working alongside qualified beauty professionals
has allowed Emma to gain knowledge she puts in to practice
with her own clients.
“I’m amazed how much we as beauty therapists need to
know so we can properly educate our clients, so they get the
highest quality treatments that they deserve,” says Emma.
“The amount I’ve learnt about our skin is astonishing and the
best part is learning something new every day.”
Emma’s trainer, experienced and qualified beauty therapist
Arita Hughes, has found the experience of training an
apprentice to be beneficial to her own growth as a beauty
therapist.

“Taking Emma under my wing and becoming her trainer was
the perfect opportunity for the both of us to learn. You grow so
much more when you help others grow,” says Arita.
By being a trainer, you are shaping
the next generation of beauty
therapists. Keep your standards
high and they will follow in your
footsteps.
Looking forward, Emma hopes to continue to learn and grow
into the best beauty therapist she can be.
“Someone once told me, “If you think you know everything
in your job, you’re in the wrong job”. With the amount of new
research, technology, and techniques coming out, there’s
always something new to learn, which I find so fascinating,”
says Emma. “I always want to put my best foot forward and
give my clients the service they deserve.”

WORD
You’re unique.
When it comes to supporting the
New Zealand beauty industry,
Ilse Vermeulen is both a pioneer,
as well as with continuing a family
legacy.
The owner of Youth Beauty, which
has a formidable reputation for being
at the forefront of new technologies
and products, is also committed to
continuing to grow her business and
innovate, just as her father did when
he introduced some of the first IPL
machines to South Africa. That same
passion and drive passed on down to
Ilse, who was working in the medical
field before following in his footsteps
and becoming the exclusive distributor
in New Zealand (and Australia) for the
Oxymegastation machine some 18
years ago. Ilse has since gone on to
pave her own path and today under her
guidance, Youth Beauty proudly offers
an online training platform with hours
of free industry specific education and
stockist training, as well as representing
world leading brands including
Eurofeedback, Asterasys, Vani-T,
Panemorfi, skincareRX, Theravine, Elim,
Brow Code, Dermedics, The Tonik and
Clareblend.
BeautyNZ finds out more.
Q.
What keeps you inspired about the
beauty industry?
Our industry is filled with passionate
A. people who are motivated to
Ilse Vermeulen
help others and who are keen on
self-development. It is constantly
evolving; there’s always something
new and exciting to bring to the
New Zealand market. I’m inspired to
be able to work with cutting edge
technology every day. My goal is
to deliver the most cost-effective
product and technology solutions to
our clients, along with an excellent
client experience.
Q. Who inspires you in general?
My team. Knowing that I have others
A. turning up every day to do their best,
to serve our industry and also further
their own professional development,
helps me keep focused on what is
important. Many of our clients are
owner operated small businesses;
women working to provide for their
families, while juggling motherhood,
being a wife, daughter and even
grandmothers. I feel blessed to
be able to support, supply and
empower others with honest and
trustworthy business solutions.
Q.
What products/treatments are you
loving right now and why?
I’m super excited about launching
A. Enozo Sustainable; environmentally
friendly infection management, and
also our new Salubre Therapeutics
range for sufferers of eczema and
psoriasis, Rocasea, etc.
Q. How do you finish your day?
Bedtime stories and cuddles with
A. my two children, and my amazingly
supportive life partner.
Q.
Greatest business/personal
learnings from the last two years?
I would like to say I’ve learned work/
A. life balance, but with more change in
the last two years than the previous
10, we’ve all had to work harder.
We are privileged however to be in
industry where we can truly make a
difference to people’s lives, but we
can only do it long term if we take
care of ourselves first. All business
owners and mothers will know the
constant struggle to do that.
Q.
I have learned that every bit
adds up. Start with your mind
and your heart. You truly are what
you think about. And take care of
your internal health. Wellness does
start in your gut.
Back yourself with consistent
genuine care for your clients
and your team. Keep learning and
developing yourself daily. 1% a day is
365% in a year.
Honesty is gold. Relationships are
built on trust and mutual respect.
Leadership roles require vibrant and
alert leaders.
