All eight Spanish playersare in the world’s top 15 for wheelchairpadel so it was little surprise thattheir team took the honours, withOscar Agea/Coco Bernal beatingcompatriots Marcos Cambronero/Inaki Ramperez in the final.“The final was so spectacular, intenseand the level of game so high thatemotion took over the public whenthey realised again that the playerswere actually in wheelchairs. This iswhat padel is all about,” said Albane,who was assisted in organising thetournament by competitor SebastienHusser, France’s top wheelchairpadel player.Eight nation planAlbane is now working on plans forat least eight nations to competein a wheelchair padel tournamentin 2023, with hopes that the UKand Ireland will participate againstnations including Sweden, Finlandand potentially the UAE.Speaking to Padel Magazine inFrance, player Sebastien Husser said:“This international tournament, thefirst in the world, will remain a veryspecial competition for me. This isa very important step in the historyof French wheelchair padel andalso worldwide.”Hi team mate Nicolas Vanlebergheadded: “The atmosphere betweenall the players was great. There isreal pride to have participated inthe first international tournament,to witness what will be the futureof padel in a wheelchair.”Wheelchair padel rules are muchthe same as those for able-bodiedplayers with one exception - the ballis allowed to bounce twice. All theFrench national team come froma wheelchair tennis background, asituation mirrored in other countriesand Albane has brought the FrenchTennis Federation onboard tosupport international tournamentsin 2023. •“I will do anything to help padel grow, I think it isthe most amazing game, the sport of the futurefor everybody and the wheelchair athletes are thebest sports people I have ever met.
