Roy Harket reports.Looking back at 2022 there’sno question that there are at leastthree very good reasons to becheerful as a new year in whichpadel finally announces its arrivallooms large.Reason OneIn August the inaugural FIP RISELondon Padel Open was held atthe National Tennis Centre (NTC)in Roehampton, London, brilliantlydelivering a British winner in the formof GB Ladies No 1 Tia Norton, whotriumphed in the ladies tournamentwith her Spanish partner CarlaFito Fernandez. It was Tia’s firstinternational title.Reason TwoIn October We Are Padel Derbyplayed host to the European WorldChampionship Qualifiers andemphatically proved that the 11-courtfacility is the super-venue Britishpadel has been crying out for. Thevenue provided the perfect settingfor the GB Men to qualify for theWorld Championships in Dubai, witha dramatic tie against Germanygoing to the wire before playersChristian Medina Murphy and SamJones prevailed.Sadly there was only heartache forthe GB Women, captained by Tia, asa strong Carolina Navarro-inspiredSweden proved simply too wily andtoo good to overcome on the roadto Dubai.Reason ThreeThe GB men travelled to Dubai forthe XVI World Championships justweeks after qualifying in Derby. Theyequipped themselves incrediblywell against the top players fromaround the world but the task proveda bridge too far when they foundthemselves drawn in the ‘group ofdeath’ against defending championsSpain (including Ale Galán and JuanLebron), dark horses Portugal andprevious quarter-finalists Uruguay.The experience did provide a wealthof invaluable experience for the team,which will surely stand them in goodstead going forward.Perfect blueprintReflecting on the success of the FIPRISE London Open, LTA Head of PadelTom Murray said it provided theperfect blueprint for 2023: “We will behosting four FIP Rise tournaments in2023 and the idea was to showcasethis type of event at the NTC so thatvenues could enjoy it and see what itentailed and then request to host.“The more venues we have comingforward for these events will supportWINTER 202337
