newsSombornePadel ClubBy Katie WeinerChris Herridge (joint owner ofSomborne Padel Tennis Club) invitedmembers plus friends and family foran open afternoon earlier in the year.There were free flowing drinks, a hogroast, ice creams and a show match.The weather was kind and saw around60 people come to not only socialiseand meet prospective new opponents,but for some to try out padel for thefirst time. On a straw poll of two lovelyladies I chatted to, they both said theywould definitely be giving it a try.Chris set up The Padel Court Companythree years ago and has installedmore than 20 courts in the last twoyears. Having more than 30 yearsof experience as an architect andtechnical director of The World SquashFederation, he turned his hand, alongwith his brother John, to buildingpadel courts.The Somborne Padel Tennis courtsalso showcase the game to peoplewho have never seen it before (yesthere are lot of people, unbelievably!).Chris told me he has a desk fullof requests for quotations forinstallations. Hurrah for that.The coaching team at Padel United,Maldon, are proving that the game canbe played by anyone of any age afteradding regular sessions for its localUniversity of the Third Age (U3A).Rawdonclub newsPadel is going great guns at Rawdon Golf and LawnTennis Club in West Yorkshire. The club was the first inthe Leeds/Bradford area to install a padel court (in May2021) and, less than a year later, added a second.Membership continues to grow, with more than 124 new members,box and mini leagues plus matches against ‘local’ clubs includingHarrogate Squash and Fitness; Surge, Harrogate, and Tennis Worldin Middlesbrough. It also hosted West of Scotland Padel on itssummer road trip.Events such as ‘padel and prosecco’ have proved popular and theclub championships saw 16 pairs competing in men’s and mixed and14 in the ladies contest. Competitions have also been held for thosejust starting to play.Leeds University has formed a padel club that trains at Rawdon(see page 44), and the University of the Third Age (U3A) brings agroup of players aged 70yrs+ for regular sessions.Primaries have a ballWhat to do with used balls is aquestion asked by many padelfacilities - and West of ScotlandPadel has come up with aperfect solution, donating themto local schools.“We are delighted to beworking with our primariesin the local area to donatepadel balls,” said a spokesmanfor the club, which has threeindoor courts in Stevenston,North Ayrshire, and is run bymembers as a not-for-profitcharitable organisation.74 thebandeja.com
