Zephyr
releases
debut
single

A RISING young rock band
is set to release its debut single
tomorrow.
Former and current students
from Christchurch Boys’ High,
Christchurch Girls’ High and
Avonside Girls’ High Schools
make up the band Zephyr.
(She Ain’t Got No) Shame is the
band’s first single since forming
in 2022. It follows their success at
last year’s Rockquest, where they
were third in the national final.
They also opened the Selwyn
Sounds music festival in March.
There, they performed to
about 5000 people and shared
the stage with renowned New
Zealand musicians Sir Dave
Dobbyn, Stellar, Mi-Sex and Gin
Wigmore.

targeted
in crime
spree
CUTTS RD Mini Mart in Russley
was raided during a smash and
grab spree across the city early on
Monday morning.
Seven business were targeted,
including stores in Halswell and
Wigram.
Cutts Rd Mini Mart owner
Kinjan Shah heard a large “bang”
at 6am and quickly discovered his
shop had been hit.
“I’m always reading the news
and I know the ram-raids happen
so I know it’s going to happen,
they target each and every store,”
he said.
Shah ran to check his shop
and found a car planted in the
building’s entrance.
Footage from the incident
showed the car attempting to
breach the shop entrance but
being unable to.
The break-in followed another
at the MetroMart on Sparks Rd,
Halswell, about 3am, when a large
hole was smashed into the glass
shop front and shards scattered
inside the store’s entrance. Fifteen
minutes later, another shop on
Wigram Rd was hit.
Said Shah of the break-in at his
Cutts Rd store: “The emotion of
my business friends – we feel this
problem but we know it’s going to
happen.
“We have to face the problem
now, that’s normal these days.
When is it going to stop?”

School celebrates with
kite-making and kai

along to celebrate Matariki at
Redwood Primary School.
The school will host a range of
activities from 11am to 2.30pm
tomorrow for pupils, family and
caregivers.
Principal Nick Gunn said the
school has run events in the
past to celebrate Matariki and,
even though the holiday landed
before the school term started,
they still wanted to mark the
occasion.

Students devise plan
to make streets safer
VILLA MARIA College students
and staff have come up with a
plan to make the streets near the
school safer.
Deputy principal Mike Baugh
said the plan started with senior
students and the student council
raising concerns about their
safety when
travelling to
school.
“Our
concerns
revolved
around the
speed limit on
Yaldhurst Rd,
as well as the
lack of signage
indicating

there is a school zone and a speed
limit change and the narrow
congestion on Brodie St due to
parking on either side,” he said.
They have been working with
the city council’s community
travel advisor George Booty
to develop a travel plan that
improves road safety and
encourages the whole school
community to use active modes
of transport to get to and from
school.
Baugh said even though some
people may have issues with
a speed limit change, it will
improve safety for their students.
“It will make a significant
difference and we will continue
to promote traffic and students’
safety around the school.
Students’ safety is our first
priority.”
Baugh said they presented
their travel plan to the Waipuna
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board, the city
council and Waka Kotahi NZ
Transport Agency, which came
back with some suggestions.
These included promoting
‘Park and Stride’, which involves
parents parking and dropping
their children off so they can walk
the last bit to school, instead of
dropping them right at the front
gate, to help ease congestion.
Said Baugh: “(The plan
included) adding more signage to
indicate the speed limit change
on Yaldhurst Rd from 60km/h
to 50km/h, with the city council
and transport agency looking
into changing the speed limit to
30km/h during school hours.”
Baugh said Brodie St will not
be altered in terms of parking. He
has been informed the changes
will be made late 2023 to early
2024.
He also said it was nice they got
a response so quickly.
“It has been an overall
positive experience, especially
for the students who were
involved as it showed them that
they could voice these issues and
be listened to.”

Team leader
provides
books with
an extra life
WITH A background as a
bookbinder and as a trainer on
the construction of commercial
books, each day is different for
the city council’s preservation
and distribution team leader
Jane Hackett.
“Whether I’m organising
my team to deliver books and
exhibition items across the city,
or I’m spending time repairing
books, no day is ever the same,”
said Hackett.
Hackett said her team works
hard to make sure books are
relocated to fill customers’ holds,
and to give books that need to
remain in the collection an extra
life.
“Every library book is examined
on return and will be passed along
to my team if it is in need of repair.
We’ll determine what needs
to be done and then restore it to
the best of our ability.
“When I come home with a
huge smile on my face, my husband
can always tell I’ve been repairing
books. I love this aspect
of my job, it’s my happy place.”
Books that are no longer
needed in the collection skip the
repair process and instead are
kept for the Christchurch City
Libraries Big Bargain Book Sale
– an event planned and managed
by Hackett.
Hackett said the preservation
and distribution team deliver a
selection of books to at least 10
rest homes each fortnight.
“This is a joint effort with our
outreach team who put these selections
together, and we deliver
them.
“To encourage tamariki to engage
with books and reading, we
also deliver a range of children’s
books to low decile preschools
three times a term.”
Hackett said another significant
part of her role is to
manage the distribution of books
between the libraries, using two
trucks to visit 20 sites a day,
Monday to Friday.
“During library closures, we
work alongside the facilities team
to assist with the reconfiguration
of shelving, moving furniture
and equipment around and
minor maintenance. We also
provide valuable help with the
setting up of exhibitions across
the network.”
The collaboration list continues
as Hackett works together
with the archivists at CCL and
the city council.
“This is an important aspect
as I can provide advice on how
material can be preserved for the
future – whether this is by creating
specialised archival boxes for
loose-leaf material, or mending
books with fragile bindings.
“We work hard each day to
keep the collections looking at
their best, and to move books
around the city to refresh
collections on a regular basis and
to meet customer demand.”

AN AUTOMATED external
defibrillator has been installed at
Cotswold Mātāhae School.
Administrator Marie Bianco
said it had been a long-term
project for the Bishopdale
school.
“We wanted to have this
vital piece of life saving
equipment available for our
staff and students as well as
our wider community, outside
of school and business hours.
“We were lucky enough
to be chosen . . . to have the
AED installed due to Cotswold
Mātāhae School having Ayden, a
very special heart child enrolled
at our school.”
The device was funded by
Hato Hone St John; Embracing
Hearts, a charity that donates
defibrillators to schools; Heart
Kids NZ, which supports
families impacted by childhood
heart conditions, and the school
board of trustees.
The AED is located at the
entrance to the school office at 50
Cotswold Ave.
It is available to the
community 24/7 and has
been added to the AED
locations app, making it easy
to find in an emergency via
aedlocations.co.nz

18, have been friends since they
were 13.
Vocalist Cleo Cavell, 17, joined
the band after being approached
by Robson to be their singer.
Anderson said it is quite
exciting to be releasing their
debut song.
“It has been a big process but
very happy it’s happening,” he
said.
He said it has taken awhile
because they have been learning
about the process and what
goes on behind the scenes of
recording a song.
“We want to thank Chris
van de Geer from the band
Stellar* for helping us with the
distribution and everyone at
Big Pop Records and Regan
Barker for helping us with the
recording.”
Cavell said the biggest
obstacle was deciding on the
cover art for the single.
“When you have four people
with all different visions and
styles it can take a while to agree
on something,” she said.
Originally the band was called
The Jhets but they changed the

name as people kept thinking
they were like Bennie and
the Jets. “We didn’t like the
association and we didn’t like
how it wasn’t original, so from
the beginning of this year we
have been Zephyr, which Mya
came up with and we all liked,”
she said.
The single follows the story
of a young female waltzing her
way through life in a groupie
fashion with attacking guitar
riffs, a pounding bass, powerful
drumming and a stunning vocal
range.
With three of the musicians
still at school, Anderson
and Cavell said they hope to
continue the band for a while.
“The goal is to write as much
music as we can and get it
recorded and released,” he said.

Dive into delicious bounty from the sea

delectable kai moana
Seafood chowder
Serves 6
Ingredients
¾ cup dry white wine
1.5kg shellfish (I used mussels
and clams)
1 large potato, cubed 1cm
50g butter
1 leek, diced
1 carrot, diced
2 clove garlic, chopped
½ cup flour
1 litre fish stock
1 bay leaf
2 sprigs thyme
250ml cream
250ml full milk
300g smoked fish (I used
kingfish)
1 fillet of white fish (I used blue
cod)
1 fillet of salmon
Chopped parsley to garnish
Sea salt & pepper
Directions
In a large pot, heat the wine
and add the shellfish, cover, and
steam until the shells open. (I
usually stand ready to extract
each one as it opens with a pair
of tongs). Set the shellfish aside.
Reduce the wine by half then set
aside.
Meanwhile, tip the potatoes
into a small pot of boiling water
to cover and simmer till fork
tender. Drain and set aside.
Heat the butter in a large
saucepan and gently cook the
carrots, leek, and garlic, until
tender. Add the flour, stirring
to form a roux. Add the wine
and a little fish stock and stir to
a thick paste. Gradually add the
rest of the stock, and the bay leaf
and thyme, stirring to ensure no
lumps form.
Add the milk and cream, using
a whisk to form a smooth base.
Add in all the seafood and the
cooked potato and bring to a
gentle simmer then remove from
the heat.
Serve garnished with parsley.
Fish cakes
Serves 4
Ingredients
400g Agria potatoes, peeled and
quartered
2 Tbsp olive oil
Finely grated zest and juice of 1
lemon
2 thyme sprigs
½ lemon, sliced
300g fish (I use a combination
of salmon and white)
300g smoked fish
Handful of flat leaf parsley,
chopped
½ cup plain flour
2 medium eggs, lightly beaten
1½ cups of panko crumbs
¼ cup canola oil
Anchovy dressing
2 Tbsp capers
2 small shallots, peeled and
finely chopped
Zest of a lemon
Bunch flat leaf parsley leaves,
chopped
1 small tin of anchovies,
chopped (about 6)
½ cup of good quality extra
virgin olive oil
Directions
Put the potatoes in a pot of
well-salted water to cover and
bring to the boil.
Cook for 10-15 minutes until
tender when pierced with a knife.
Drain well and mash. Mix in the
first measure of olive oil, zest and
juice. Season to taste, cool.
Add thyme, lemon slices and
all the fish to a wide pan of
slowly simmering salted water
and gently poach for a few
minutes until cooked. Transfer
to a plate lined with a paper
towel to cool down.
Flake the fish and add with the
parsley to the mashed potatoes,
gently mixing with your hands.
Taste and adjust seasoning.
Divide mixture into four
rounded patties.
Season the flour with salt and
pepper, coat the patties with the
flour then dip into the egg and
finally into the panko crumbs,
turning to evenly coat all over.
Chill in fridge to set
(minimum ½ hour).
To cook, heat the oven to
180 deg C. Heat a thin layer of
canola oil in a wide ovenproof
frying pan. Fry the fish cakes
for 2-3 minutes until golden
brown, then flip over and fry
for a further 1-2 minutes. Finish
cooking in oven for 5-7 minutes.
To make the dressing, gently
warm the ingredients in a small
pot for 3-4 minutes. Spoon a
dollop on each warm plate and
place the fish on top, with a
further spoonful on top. Serve
with steamed greens. – ODT

Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a

ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.

Substantial overhaul for Nissan Pathfinder
ARMED WITH a raft of
improvements and a lot more
style, the latest iteration of the
Nissan Pathfinder should find
the road to success smoother
than its underwhelming
predecessor.
It borrows some bits from the
old model, including the same
3.5-litre petrol V6, but has had
an emphatic styling overhaul to
make a telling and compelling
difference. This Pathfinder demands
attention with its strong,
muscular appearance, shorter
front overhang, slimmer pillars,
C-shaped LED headlights and a
“floating” roofline.
Seven drive and terrain
settings are available for the
all-wheel drive system. A new
innovation is Pro-PILOT featuring
semi-autonomous driving.
Safety is nailed in one, thanks to
nine airbags, including curtain

bags spanning all three rows of
seats. Towing of braked trailers
up to 2700kg is made safer and
easier with a two-mode on-board
trailer-stability programme.
Sold here initially in 2022 as a
three model line-up, Nissan NZ
didn’t wait long to hit the delete
button on the entry-level ST.
Instead, they’ve opted for a two
high-spec line-up starting with
the $83,490 Ti. The lavishly appointed
Ti-L I road tested is the
‘cherry on the cake’ model.
The engine’s maximum power
of 202kw is about the same as
the old model, while the 340Nm
of torque is under done in an
SUV of this size and weight.
Consequently, low-speed pulling
power suffers and isn’t as
strong as it needs to be to cope
with long punishing hill climbs
under load. This leads to the
transmission hunting between
gears in search of more power to
keep the vehicle moving along
at a respectable clip. At times, all
nine gears the transmission has
at its disposal need to be called
into play to do their bit.
A large and welcoming cabin
looks and feels the real large
upmarket SUV deal. Comfort is
assured regardless of what the
weather is doing. Making this
happen is the excellent tri-zone
climate controlled air-conditioning
with air vents all the way
through to the back row of seats.
Rear sunshades do a good job of
reducing heat and glare.
A huge 10.8-inch Head Up
Display is standard, projecting
key information, including turnby-turn
satellite navigation, to
keep the driver focused on the
road ahead. An upgraded infotainment
system has integrated
wireless Apple CarPlay and
wired Android Auto, four USB
charging points plus two 12-volt
outlets.
There’s a comprehensive safety
package from Nissan’s Intelligent
Mobility Suite. Included is a
rearview camera, an Advanced
Drive-Assist instrument cluster
and LED dusk-sensing headlights
with high-beam assist.
A well-sorted double wishbone
front suspension and an
independent multi-link rear end
with coils, brings a fair degree
of handling composure to the
road holding table. However, the
Pathfinder’s sheer size and 2000-
plus kg kerb weight compromises
the vehicle’s handling at its outer
extremities. This comes to the
fore when driving on tight,
twisty terrain, which we have an
abundance of on our roads. The
vehicle’s handling limitations
aren’t helped by light steering.
To my mind, the latest Ford
Everest is the road-holding
benchmark model for our large
SUV market. Because it’s based
on the latest Ford Ranger ute,
it has genuine go anywhere
off-road capabilities that are
superior to the Pathfinder. It’s
okay on ski-field access roads
and that type of driving, but
little more with its average
ground clearance.
