The school will host a range of activities from 11am to 2.30pm tomorrow for pupils, family and caregivers. Principal Nick Gunn said the school has run events in the past to celebrate Matariki and, even though the holiday landed before the school term started, they still wanted to mark the occasion. “We will have a range of activities but one of the main European Car Owners NEW DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT! Now only $35.80 Plus $5 P&H per copy Students devise plan to make streets safer VILLA MARIA College students and staff have come up with a plan to make the streets near the school safer. Deputy principal Mike Baugh said the plan started with senior students and the student council raising concerns about their safety when travelling to school. “Our concerns revolved around the speed limit on Yaldhurst Rd, as well as the lack of signage indicating Mike Baugh there is a school zone and a speed limit change and the narrow congestion on Brodie St due to parking on either side,” he said. They have been working with the city council’s community travel advisor George Booty to develop a travel plan that improves road safety and encourages the whole school community to use active modes of transport to get to and from school. Baugh said even though some people may have issues with a speed limit change, it will improve safety for their students. “It will make a significant difference and we will continue to promote traffic and students’ safety around the school. Students’ safety is our first priority.” Baugh said they presented their travel plan to the Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board, the city council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, which came back with some suggestions. These included promoting ‘Park and Stride’, which involves parents parking and dropping their children off so they can walk the last bit to school, instead of dropping them right at the front gate, to help ease congestion. Said Baugh: “(The plan included) adding more signage to indicate the speed limit change on Yaldhurst Rd from 60km/h to 50km/h, with the city council and transport agency looking into changing the speed limit to 30km/h during school hours.” Baugh said Brodie St will not be altered in terms of parking. He has been informed the changes will be made late 2023 to early 2024. He also said it was nice they got a response so quickly. “It has been an overall positive experience, especially for the students who were involved as it showed them that they could voice these issues and be listened to.” Sarah Pallett MP for Ilam I’m here to help.
