The fox and the pigeon Characters: Narrator Pigeon Fox Setting: Dublin Narrator: A long time ago in Dublin there was a cruel fox. All the animals were scared of the fox. The fox would brag about it’s soft fur and beautiful tail. One day the fox was looking at an apple in a tree and spotted a pigeon. Pigeon Hello. I have never seen a creature like you before. Fox: Hello you hideous creature. Fly up and get that apple for me. Pigeon: And why would I do that? Fox: So that I don’t eat you. Pigeon: OK Narrator: The pigeon flew up and grabbed the apple in his beek. Pigeon: Instead of giving it to you I am going to put it at the top of the tree Fox: Why did you do that? Do you not respect me? Pigeon: No, there is another that I respect. I can take you to him, if you please. Fox: Take me to him now! Pigeon: OK I will take you there. Fox: Why have we stopped at this riverbank? 64
Pigeon: He is past the river, so you must swim over. It’s not far. Fox: Are you sure? I’m not used to swimming that distance…. Pigeon: Just jump in. At least try it! Fox: I’ll give it a shot……… (Panting) How did you get here so quickly? Pigeon: I flew over the river. Fox: I thought you were going to swim too. That’s not fair. Pigeon: Why wouldn’t it be. I can fly! Fox: Hmm. Where is this one that you respect? Pigeon: He’s just over that ravine. Not far. FOX: What is this? How should I get over this chasm? Pigeon: Well, you will have to run around it while I fly over. Fox: How much further is he? I’ve been running for 3 days. Pigeon: The one that I respect is just ahead in the well. You really took your time. Fox: Is that it? (pointing at the well.) 65
