Charolais, the breed that leads the way
As we see an end to 2022 and the start of 2023, we can look back on 2022 as a busy but very successful year for the
society and look forward to 2023 with huge positivity and excitement for the breed.
Autumn Sales
Stirling
There was a lot of negativity around the run up to the autumn sales in the press with it being so dry throughout the
summer and feed, fertiliser and fuel costs so high. However, Charolais sired suckled calves were still out stripping
everything else in the store ring, this showed at the bull sales with the breed having another flyer of a sale. With 84
bulls changing hands to a top of 28,000gns, an average of £7467.50 and an 82% clearance, what was even more pleasing
was there were 21 more bulls sold on the year which is a whopping 33% increase in numbers sold and 7% increase in
clearance rate. This is down to the commercial men striving to produce the most efficient and desirable suckled calf
which leaves them the best return on there capital, this being a Charolais.
The show was very ably judged by Duncan MacGregor Corrie herd his Champion was Glenericht Superb for W K & P
Drysdale selling for 20,000gns to L Houston of the Gretnahouse herd. Top price was Falleninch Stormzy for AB Hornall
selling for 28,000gns in a 4 way split to RA Milne & Son, Elgin; R & N Barclay, Harestone; A MacGregor, Allanfauld and H
Goldie, Goldies herd.
Dispersal Sales
October also saw a very sad day losing two stalwarts of the breed in Iain Millar, Lochend and Snowdon Oates,
Ravensworth who both dispersed their herds. The depth of breeding in both herds was clear to see with the trade
reflecting the years of dedication and hard work to get their herds to where they were. With Iain selling to a top of
21,000gns for an outstanding yolk in Lochend Lightning and her bull calf at foot Lochend Thunder. Snowdon sold to a
top of 8,500gns for Ravensworth Nicola. I must thank both men for all you have done for the breed over the years, Iain
being a past Chairman of the Society as well. Both of you will always be welcome at any Society event as your wealth of
knowledge and experience is invaluable to the breed as well as the many friends that you have both made.
Swatragh
The show and sale in Swatragh was Judged by Stuart Barclay Harestone Herd and he had an outstanding show of cattle
to judge with depth and quality from start to finish, it was a credit to the breeders. A special mention has to go to both
of the female classes, they were as good a show of females as you would see anywhere in the UK.
33 bulls sold to average £4239.77 with a clearance rate of 63%. Two bulls had joint top price of 7,200gns, firstly for the
Champion Drumconnis Santiago from J McGrath and secondly for the Junior Champion Brogher Senator from T Phair.
Jack Smith had an exceptional draft sale of females which topped at 10,400gns for a 9-month-old heifer calf Bessiebell
Tilly.
Welshpool
The show was extremely well judged by David MacKenzie of the Thurso herd. There was a total of 41 bulls change
hands at an average of £4582.87 and a 76% clearance. The Overall Champion was Esgob Star from GM Jones and sold
to 6,000gns. Top price on the day was 8,000gns for Maerdy Sermen from D E Evans. This was a very solid trade of bulls
again backed up by strong trade for Charolais sired suckled calves in Wales & Southern England.
White Gold Sale
Friday 20 January is the second White Gold sale following on from last years very successful debut sale where females
topped at 18,000gns for Tweeddale Rosemary. It’s a great opportunity for new and established herds to buy some of the
top genetics within the breed. This year there are 37 entries forward.
AHDB & Bull Sale figures
AHDB has released there most up to date (August 2022) continental breed rankings in which Charolais come out top
on Carcass weight ranking, Average daily carcass gain ranking and joint top on days to slaughter ranking. This puts the
breed top on 2 and joint top on 1 out of 5 rankings.
If you compare 2021 to 2022 figures of bulls sold though society sales there is a huge lift of 22% more bulls sold on the
year. With the ever-declining number of suckler cows in the UK this shows that the breed is bucking the trend.
These two sets of figures are hugely encouraging & satisfying for me as it shows that the breed and its breeders are
doing things right and we are delivering a product to our customer that is efficient, that can work in any farming
situation in the UK whilst leaving the farmer with the best return on their investment by hitting the desired carcass
specification traits when finished. This is something we need to keep building on and concentrate on gaining an even
larger market share of the BCMS Charolais cross calf registrations. If we can continue to work more closely with the
commercial farmer, exposing the breed to them and its benefits then I see no reason why we can’t increase this market
share year on year. In turn this will help our members to continue to sell the same if not more bulls in the upcoming
years.
Charolais Youth Sponsorship
Following on from a very successful youth final at Balthayock Farm by kind permission of Major David Walter we are
pleased to announce that we have secured the backing of Harbro as our sole main sponsor of Charolais youth for the
next 3 years, this is hugely exciting as the backing of Harbro and the knowledge of their team will be invaluable to
the youth. We hope with workshops and seminars we will be able to educate them on the correct preparation of the
animals for show & sales as well as how to manage cows pre & post calving. The young breeders are the future of the
breed and without the next generation we have nothing, I am a very strong supporter of the youth system and trying
to help them as much as we can. I am also delighted to announce that the final for 2023 will by held at Peter Dongers,
Seawell herd on the 2 nd of July. This will again be an excellent venue and experience for the young breeders. We are
immensely grateful to Peter for agreeing to host the final this year.
Margaret Atkinson
It is with immense sadness that Margaret suddenly passed away in November, Margaret was a huge stalwart of the
breed with her husband Mike who ran the exceptionally successful Mowbarypark herd. Margaret was the secretary for
the Yorkshire Charolais club and always willing to offer her help at every opportunity, she always had a smile on her face
and was great company to be around and did so much for the local community and charities. Our thoughts and deepest
condolences go to Mike, Lindsey and all the family. Taken so suddenly but never forgotten.
I would like to thank all the staff at BCCS for the continued hard work and dedication. My fellow council members for all
they do in helping drive the breed forward in the right direction. They give up a lot of time and their efforts are greatly
appreciated.
Thanks, must also go to all the regional Charolais clubs for all they do throughout the
year in promoting the breed at local events.
Lastly and most definitely not least, a huge thank you to all of the commercial
farmers who have purchased Charolais bulls throughout the year. As a society we
want to continue working very closely with you all to produce a bull that’s versatile
and can work in any system, in any part of the country, while still leaving best return
of investment.
I want to wish you all the best for 2023. Here is to another successful year for the
breed and all its members.
Stirling October
Falleninch takes
Stirling by Storm
Judge: Duncan Macgregor
Junior Judge: Annabelle Howell
The Stirling
Bull Sales
kicked off
on Sunday
16 October,
beginning
with the
show of
Charolais
animals
expertly
judged by
Duncan
MacGregor
of the wellknown
Corrie herd.
The sale
followed on Monday 17 October, with
84 bulls changing hands, to a top price
of 28,000gns and an average price of
£7467.50 with an 82% clearance.
Commenting on the sale, Chairman
Allen Drysdale said “This was an
incredible sale for everyone involved
in the breed with an improvement of
21 more bulls sold when compared
to 2021’s October sale – this equates
to a whopping 33% increase in the
number of bulls sold and a 7% increase
in clearance rate. The facts are there to
see in black and white, with Charolais
sired suckled calves topping the
markets week in week out throughout
the country. Commercial farmers are
striving to produce the most efficient
animal that will leave them the best
return on their capital, this being a
Charolais.”
Following the bull sale, 13 females
were sold – including a draft of quality
heifers from the Caithness herd.
Finally, proceedings closed with the
dispersals of the renowned Lochend
and Ravensworth herds, which reached
top prices of 21,000gns and 8,500gns
respectively.
Taking the top price, at 28,000gns, was
the day’s Reserve Junior Champion –
Falleninch Stormzy from A B Hornall of
Top price at 28,000gns Falleninch Stormzy
the Falleninch herd in Stirlingshire. This
wasn’t Stormzy’s first taste of success;
he had previously attained the title of
Charolais Junior Champion at the Royal
Highland Show earlier in the year. This
impressive 17-month-old was sired by
the well-known 70,000gns Barnsford
Ferny, and his dam is Falleninch Orla,
a homebred daughter of Falleninch
Imperator. Stormzy was purchased
under a 4-way joint ownership
agreement between R A Milne & Sons,
Elgin herd; R & N Barclay, Harestone
herd; A MacGregor, Allanfauld herd;
and H Goldie, Goldies herd.
Close behind Stormzy, at 26,000gns,
was the Senior Champion Rutherston
Sonny from the herd of A Anderson
of the Rutherston
herd in Angus.
Sonny had
previously
found success
in the Junior
Bull Interbreed
Championships
at the Perth
Show 2022, and
boasts impressive
400- and 600-
day weight EBVs
of +88 and +103
respectively. This
growthy lad is a
son of Balmyle
Oscar, and his dam
Rutherston Jenna is
by Alwent Goldbar
Rutherston Sonny at 26,000gns
– a trait leader in 200-, 400-, and
600-day weight EBVs. Sonny was also
purchased under a joint ownership,
this time going to J H C Campbell &
Sons of the Thrunton herd, and R A & J
Blyth of the Marwood herd.
The final bull to reach the 20,000gns
mark was Glenericht Superb, who
dominated the previous day’s judging
and won the titles of Overall Male
Champion and Intermediate Champion,
and formed part of the Group-of-Three
Champion team. This 18-month-old
is from the Glenericht herd of W K &
P Drysdale, Perthshire, and was sired
by their successful stock bull Caylers
Oxford. Superb’s dam is Glenericht
Jackie, a daughter of the 12,000gns
6
No bull works harder for the farmer, the plate and the planet

Glenericht Superb at 20,000gns Ricnick Sonnybill at 16,000gns Allanfauld Shogun at 12,500gns
Caylers Gladiator. Winning the bid
and taking the Champion home was L
Houston of the Gretnahouse herd.
Taking the next highest price of
16,000gns was 18-month-old Ricnick
Sonnybill, bred by R F McCornick of
the Ricnick herd in Dumfriesshire.
Sonnybill had previously earned the
titles of Reserve Junior Champion at
the Great Yorkshire Show and Breed
Champion at the Dumfries Show this
summer. Sonnybill was sired by the
popular AI bull Harestone Hercules,
and his dam Ricnick Lingo is a daughter
of Whitecliffe Harlequin – a trait leader
in 400- and 600-day weight EBVs.
Sonnybill will be heading to Newton
Stewart, Wigtownshire, under the
care of successful bidder Shennanton
Livestock.
Selling for the next highest price
of 12,500gns was 18-month-old
Allanfauld Shogun from A MacGregor,
Allanfauld herd. This strapping bull
has a number of familiar names in his
pedigree, having been sired by the
easy-calving Maerdy Norseman, and
out of Allanfauld Mazurka, a daughter
of the 11,000gns Balmyle Jasper.
Shogun caught the attention of J More,
who secured the final bid and will be
taking him home to Kippen, Stirling.
Two bulls reached the next highest
price of 12,000gns – the first of which
was Glenernan Sprinter from W &
N Milne of the Glenernan herd in
Aberdeenshire. Sprinter was sired by
the 17,000gns Elgin Jagger, and his
dam Corskellie Lily goes back to Wesley
Galleon. At 21 months old, Sprinter was
one of the oldest bulls forward for sale,
but this did not deter bidders. Winning
the bid was T Smith & Son, and Sprinter
will be heading back to Aberdeenshire
to their holding in Alford.
Next to reach 12,000gns was
Glenericht Scotsman, another offering
from W K & P Drysdale and a half
brother to the Overall Champion.
Scotsman also formed part of the
Group-of-Three Champion team. This
18-month-old was also sired by Caylers
Oxford, and his dam is Glenericht
Naomi, a daughter of the 15,000gns
Maerdy Hwre. Scotsman will be making
the trip to Fortrose, Inverness, to the
holding of winning bidder J McKenzie.
A further two bulls secured the
next highest price of 11,500gns.
The first of these was 20-monthold
Hollywell Sorrento, from the
Hollywell herd of J & S Middleton,
Aberdeenshire. Sorrento is by the
ever-popular Whitecliffe James, and
his dam Hollywell Italy introduces
some Irish genetics, being a daughter
of Clonoulty Andraemon. Sorrento
will be journeying over to Morpeth,
Northumberland, under the care of
final bidder F T Walton.
Next to reach 11,500gns was
19-month-old Goldies Sultan from H
Goldie of the Goldies herd in Dumfries.
This impressive young bull was sired
by Gretnahouse Heman, who is a trait
leader in several EBVs including Calving
Ease Direct and 200, 400, & 600-
day weights. Sultan’s dam is Goldies
Goldengirl, a homebred daughter
of Goldies Ambassador. Sultan will
be heading over to Ballindalloch,
Morayshire, courtesy of successful
bidder J Stuart.
A total of five bulls managed to secure
the next highest price of 10,000gns.
First up was the Reserve Senior
Champion Bonnykelly Scotsman
from R Leggat of the Bonnykelly herd,
Aberdeenshire. Scotsman was sired
by the 10,000gns Gretnahouse Ivory,
and his dam Bonnykelly Jennifer is
a Kersknowe Clansman daughter.
Winning the bid for this striking
20-month-old was Nether Balfour
Farms Park, who will be taking him
back to Drumolk, Banchory.
Next to sell for 10,000gns was another
from J & S Middleton – 19-monthold
Hollywell Seoirse. Seoirse has an
impressive pedigree behind him – he
was sired by the 18,000gns Thrunton
Fairfax, and his dam Hollywell Noami
is a daughter of popular easy-calver
Blelack Digger. Seoirse caught the
eye of G P Udale & Son, and they will
be introducing him to their herd in
Glenernan Sprinter at 12,000gns Glenericht Scotsman at 12,000gns Hollywell Sorrento at 11,500gns
No bull works harder for the farmer, the plate and the planet 7

Goldies Sultan at 11,500gns Bonnykelly Scotsman at 10,000gns Hollywell Seoirse at 10,000gns
Penrith, Cumbria.
Also reaching 10,000gns was
17-month-old Corrie Stampede, bred
by D MacGregor of the well-known
Corrie herd in Glasgow. Stampede is an
excellent example of French genetics,
having been sired by the French-born
Harestone Oscar. His dam Corrie Lilo
is a daughter of Gavinburn Harry and
goes back to the easy calving Blelack
Digger. Stampede was purchased under
joint ownership between J Irvine &
Son of Ballindalloch, Banffshire and D
Muirhead of Arbroath, Angus.
Next to sell for 10,000gns was
17-month-old Gretnahouse Smiler
from L Houston of the Gretnahouse
herd in Dumfriesshire. Smiler was
sired by Westcarse Jimmy, who is a
trait leader in 200-, 400-, and 600-day
weight EBVs, and his dam Gretnahouse
Nannabel is by the 12,000gns Wesley
Equinox. Smiler is certain to go on
to perform well for his new owners
W J Morrison & Sons of MacDuff,
Banffshire.
The final bull to reach the 5-figure
mark, also at 10,000gns, was the
day’s Reserve Overall Male Champion
and Junior Champion, Balthayock
Sebastian from the herd of D F W
H & N R Walter in Perth. Sebastian
is following in his sire Balthayock
Loyalist’s footsteps – he had also won
the Junior Championship at Stirling
in 2016 before selling for 14,000gns.
Sebastian’s dam is Balthayock Lucia, a
daughter of Ugie Echo. This strapping
young lad will be making the long trip
down to the Vexour herd in Surrey,
to his new home under the care of J
Boomaars.
Thirteen females were sold after the
conclusion of the bull sales, with the
highest price of 5,500gns being secured
by the Female Champion Harestone
Royalgem from R & N Barclay of the
Harestone herd in Aberdeenshire.
Royalgem has some excellent names
in her pedigree – she was sired by
the 40,000gns Maerdy Newman, and
her dam Harestone Locket is by the
25,000gns Inverlochy Ferdie. Securing
the final bid for this stunning young
heifer was K Watret of the Annanview
herd, Dumfriesshire.
Following on from the female sale
was the dispersal of the well-known
Lochend herd, run by Iain Millar
in Stirlingshire. The top price was
an incredible 21,000gns, and was
secured by an outfit consisting of a
beautiful cow Lochend Lightning and
her 5-month-old bull calf Lochend
Thunder. Lightning was sired by the
sought-after Oldstone Egbert, and her
dam Lochend Glitter is a daughter of
the 28,000gns Brampton Nacodar.
Her bull calf Thunder was sired by
Swalesmoor Oscar, whom the Millars
purchased for 10,000gns in 2020. After
a furious round of bidding, the hammer
finally came down with D Sawrij of the
Swalesmoor herd in Selkirkshire taking
the last bid.
Finally, the dispersal of the
Ravensworth herd, from W S Oates
in Tyne and Wear, concluded the
day’s proceedings. The top price
was 8,500gns, and was secured by
Ravensworth Nicole. Nicole was sired
by Goldies Judge, and she is out of
Ravensworth Ivy, a daughter of the
11,000gns Thrunton Bombadier. Nicole
had been scanned in-calf to Goldies
Orchard in May 2022, and both her
and her future calf are sure to perform
admirably for new owner E Vaughan of
Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.
Swatragh November
Santiago tops
Swatragh sale
Judge: Stuart Barclay
The Northern Ireland Charolais Club’s
final sale of the season took place on
Friday 4 November 2022, and saw a
total of 33 bulls sold to an average
price of £4239.77 and a 63% clearance.
The bull sale was followed by the
female sale, in which 9 animals found
new homes with an average price
of £4386.67. Finally, proceedings
closed with a draft sale from J Smyth’s
Bessiebell herd, which reached an
incredible top price of 10,400gns.
The top price for bulls was 7,200gns,
and was secured by two entries. The
first to go under the hammer was
the day’s Overall Male Champion
and Supreme Champion: 18-monthold
Drumconnis Santiago from J
McGrath in Dromore, Co. Tyrone.
Santiago’s dam, Drumconnis Jessica,
is a homebred daughter of multiple
show-winning heifer Wesley Euphoria
and goes back to the 20,000gns Perth
Champion Thrunton Trojan. He was
sired by Sportsmans Monarch, who
sold for the top price of 12,000gns at
Stirling in 2017. This stylish young lad
caught the eye of T Butler, who won
the bid and will be taking Santiago
home to Ballycastle, Co. Antrim.
Next to sell for 7,200gns was
15-month-old Junior Champion
Brogher Senator, from T Phair’s
Brogher herd in Enniskillen, Co.
Fermanagh. Senator was sired by
the ever-popular AI bull Whitecliffe
James, and his dam Brogher Omaria is
a daughter of the 10,000gns Goldies
Icon. Securing the final bid for this
strapping young bull was J Delargy of
Cushendall, Co. Antrim.
Drumconnis Santiago Overall champion and Intermediate champion
at 7,200gns
Selling for the next highest price of
7,000gns was the day’s Reserve Overall
Male Champion Drumilly Samson.
Samson was bred by J Paynter of the
Drumilly herd in Co. Armagh, and
was sired by the French-born AI bull
Invictus. Samson’s dam is Drumilly
Favourite, a daughter of the soughtafter
Oldstone Egbert. The successful
bidder for this young bull was W
Donnell of Donemana, Co. Tyrone.
The next highest price was 6,800gns,
and was secured by 16-month-old
Ardmachree Sonny, bred by A & O
Quigley of Macken, Co. Fermanagh.
This impressive bull was sired by the
70,000gns Barnsford Ferny, and his
dam is Blelack Hillary; a Maerdy Dublin
daughter. Sonny will be making the
trip over to Ballycastle, Co. Antrim
under the care of winning bidder S
McCambridge.
Reaching
the next
highest price
of 6,000gns
was the day’s
Reserve Senior
Champion,
19-month-old
Brigadoon
Sorrento, from
the well-known
herd of W D &
J A Connolly of
Ballynahinch,
Co. Down.
Sorrento is out
of Brigadoon
Milan, a
homebred
daughter of Brigadoon Himself, and he
was sired by the 15,000gns Newhouse
Maxamus. Sorrento will be making the
long journey over to Sandy, Orkney, to
the holding of final bidder Coligarth
Farm.
The top price for females was 6,700gns,
and was secured by the Female
Champion and Reserve Supreme
Champion Battleford Snowball, bred
by B Finnegan of Dungannon, Co.
Tyrone. This wasn’t Snowball’s first
brush with success, having previously
won the title of Reserve Junior Female
Champion at Balmoral earlier in the
year. This stunning young heifer was
sired by Mornity Nero, and her dam
Bessiebell Maisie goes back to the
22,000gns Newhouse Bigal. Winning
the bid and taking Snowball home was
D Knox of Colchester, Essex.
Brogher Senator Junior champion at 7,200gns
12
No bull works harder for the farmer, the plate and the planet

Drumilly Samson, Reserve overall champion and
reserve intermediate champion at 7,000gns
Ardmachree Sonny at 6,800gns
The day’s Reserve Female Champion
Loughriscouse Risika was close behind
Snowball, selling for a final price of
6,200gns. Risika was bred by H & H
Heron of Newtonards, Co. Down,
and was sired by the popular AI bull
Harestone Hercules. Her dam Goldies
Lassie is a daughter of notorious easycalver
Blelack Digger. Risika has her
fair share of Championship titles to
her name, including Reserve Female
Champion at Balmoral and Senior
Female Champion at the Northern
Ireland National Show, both in 2022.
Taking this impressive girl home is J
Porter of Bridgend, Islay.
Finally, the draft from J Smyth’s
Bessiebell herd in Newtownstewart,
Co. Tyrone, topped out at 10,400gns
for 9-month-old heifer calf Bessiebell
Tilly. Tilly was sired by the 22,000gns
Newhouse Bigal, and her dam
Aghyoule Finoula goes back to the
renowned Doonally New. Tilly will be
making the trip up to Dalry, Ayrshire,
to the holding of winning bidder G
Renfrew.
the way at
Welshpool
Judge: David Mackenzie
Shadow judge: Edward Robinson
Maerdy Sermon top price at 8,000gns
The 2022 Autumn sale season drew
to a close on Friday 10 November
with the annual show and sale held
at Welshpool Livestock Sales. Seven
strong classes of bulls were judged by
the discerning eye of David Mackenzie
of the Thurso herd, along with his
shadow judge Edward Robinson. A
total of 41 bulls and 3 females sold
over the course of the day, with bulls
reaching an average price of £4582.87
with a 76% clearance.
The top price of the day was 8,000gns,
and was attained by 16-month-old
Maerdy Sermon from the well-known
Maerdy herd of D E Evans in Flintshire.
Sermon has quite the impressive
pedigree, being sired by the 18,000gns
Goldies Linford, and going back to the
26,000gns Maerdy Hearthrob on his
dam’s side. Securing the final bid for
this young lad was T N Lightfoot of
Callington, Cornwall.
The hammer came down twice for
the next highest price of 7,000gns,
firstly for Montgomery Saturn from
Roberts & Jones in Welshpool. This
impressive 18-month-old is out of
Montgomery Marged, a daughter of
Balmyle Harlequin, and he was sired
by former Carlisle Supreme Champion
Gretnahouse Jugular. Winning the bid
for Saturn was R Jones & Son, who will
be taking him home to Brecon, Powys.
G M Jones of Bala, Gwynedd. Simon
was sired by Caylers Hustler, who was
purchased for 12,000gns at the Blelack
herd dispersal in 2016. His dam Esgob
Nesta goes back to the 26,000gns
Anside Excalibur. The successful bidder
for this young bull was R Williams,
based in Pwllheli, Gwynedd.
Two bulls managed to reach the next
highest price of 6,500gns – the first
of these was another from Roberts
& Jones: Montgomery Strong. Like
Saturn, Strong was also sired by
Gretnahouse Jugular and is out of
another Balmyle Harlequin daughter:
Montgomery Mair. H J Middleton won
the bid for this 18-month-old, and he
will be joining them on their holding in
Bucknell, Shropshire.
The day’s Reserve Overall Champion
Hendy Striker also sold for 6,500gns.
This 18-month-old was bred by J A W
Rees of the Hendy herd in Powys, and
he was sired by the Irish-born Lisnagre
Nero. Striker’s dam is Hendy Jolene,
a daughter of Sandelford Gucci. This
Also selling for 7,000gns was
16-month-old Esgob Simon, bred by
The champion Esgob Star and reserve Battleford Snowball
stylish bull caught the eye of J E & S J
Roberts, who will be introducing him to
their local herd in Welshpool, Powys.
A total of three bulls sold for the next
highest price of 6,000gns, the first
being 18-month-old Castellmawr
Star from A & M Williams of Pwllheli,
Gwynedd. Star is out of Castellmawr
Meg, a daughter of the Irish-born
Goldstar Gentleman, and he was
sired by Caylers Olympus. Star will
be heading over to his new home in
Knighton, Powys, courtesy of winning
bidder A J & J A Powell.
Also selling for 6,000gns was the day’s
Overall Champion Esgob Star – another
from G M Jones’ Esgob herd. A brother
to Simon, Star was also sired by Caylers
Hustler, while his dam Esgob Maddie
is a daughter of the renowned Blelack
Digger. This impressive 18-month-old
was purchased by G Parry of Holyhead,
Anglesey.
The final bull to secure a 6,000gns price
was Montgomery Sphinx from Roberts
& Jones. Like his brothers, Sphinx was
also sired by Gretnahouse Jugular. His
dam Montgomery Hindle is a daughter
of the 30,000gns Dingle Hofmeister.
Winning the bid for this young
16-month-old was J D & M R Buckley,
who are based locally in Welshpool,
Powys.
Finally, two young bulls sold for
the next top price of 5,500gns. The
first of these to sell was 15-monthold
Waldencourt Sunnyboy from
Waldencourt Charolais’ herd in
Newent, Gloucestershire. This young
lad goes back to Blelack Digger via
his dam Waldencourt Jessie, and he
was sired by the 14,000gns Westcarse
Houdini. Sunnyboy will be making
the journey over to Shrewsbury,
Shropshire, under the care of
successful bidder D P & M A Jones.
Also selling for 5,500gns was Maerdy
Sobin, a 15-month-old bull from
D E Evans. Sobin was sired by the
French-born Maerdy Offenback, and
his dam Maerdy Owl is a daughter of
the 10,000gns Blelack Fabulous. This
strapping young bull is sure to go on to
perform well for his new owners D G &
M Owen of Llandrindod Wells, Powys.
Charolais Youth trip to Moulins
Myself, Maddie Clarke and Andrew Adam were lucky enough
to have very kindly been given the opportunity from the
Society, to travel across to France to go and see French
Charolais at their finest, at one of the most highly regarded
shows of the year, Moulins.
The standard of Charolais cattle was exceptional, and it was
quite a sight walking through approximately 400 Charolais
calves in one shed! Judging started at 8am and classes
regularly exceeded 20 in a class. It was great to see such a
huge variety of bloodlines brought forward in the forms of the
show calves and cattle, giving us the opportunity to really see
what clicks in France, and the stamp of animal that they are
looking for.
The afternoon consisted of overall championships where cattle
that had successfully been winning throughout the year at
various shows were bought head to head for overall winners.
One of the most memorable classes from the afternoon was
the senior stock bull class, where there was around 25 bulls
in the ring and I would be surprised if there was a bull under
1200 kilos in the ring!
I would like to thank the Charolais Society for giving us this
amazing opportunity, Allen and Fiona for their worldly wisdom
in navigating through Paris (!), the rest of the UK Charolais
breeders for their great company and the French breeders for
being so welcoming and looking after us.
Annabelle Howells
Andrew and I were fortunate enough to win a trip to the
Charolais Championship Finals in Moulins, back in early
December, after myself placing first at the National Youth
Stock Judging Finals and Andrew coming second. We also won
the pairs competition that day too.
On the first day of our trip traveling to France, we met up with
fellow Charolais breeders from the UK also joining us on our
trip to Moulins. After a flight, and several trains we arrived in
Moulins and decided we would nip into the show for a nosey
around, the evening before the show started. As soon as we
walked in the shed, both Andrew and I were amazed at how
many calves were in front of us and how they all looked like
peas in a pod. I would take a guess at saying there could have
been at least over 400 Charolais calves all in the first shed we
walked in. After a while of scouting about getting excited for
the show in the morning we found ourselves in a Steakhouse
where we had the best Charolais steak and lots of red wine!!
An early start for us on show day with judging starting at
8:00 am. Andrew and I headed out to the carpark where the
judging of the calves began. There were about 8 classes going
at the one time with roughly 15-20 calves in each class. It
was an eye opener and nothing like we have ever witnessed
before. With about two people on each calf, two judges in the
ring and plenty of on lookers, there were more folk in the ring
than cows. A crazy sight but an incredible show of cattle.
We were treated to an amazing three course lunch, courtesy
of the French Charolais Society and then spent the rest of the
20
No bull works harder for the farmer, the plate and the planet

afternoon watching the championships and group classes.
The highlight of the trip would be seeing the class of stock
bulls judged. There would be about 16 older stock bulls all in
the one class, with the heaviest weighing around 1800kg!! It
was some sight to see. We then got to mix with some of the
breeders and enjoyed several drinks at the show through out
the evening.
On behalf on Andrew and myself, we would just like to thank
the Charolais Society for giving us this incredible opportunity
and thanks must go to Allen & Fiona, Ben Harman, Gareth &
Sioned for taking us under their wing and keeping us right on
the trip. If it wasn’t for them we would have found ourselves
eating calves testicles!
Obituary Caldwell McAskie
It is with great sadness that we received news of Caldwell’s passing on 21 December, one of
this country’s true gentlemen. Caldwell was among the pioneers in the early days of Charolais
in Northern Ireland with his Mountjoy herd, importing five heifers from France in 1973. He
remained a lifelong Charolais enthusiast. With a keen eye for stock and an enthusiastic nature, he
was a successful farmer and Charolais breeder winning numerous accolades over the years. His
knowledge of the breed was appreciated at the many shows he judged throughout Ireland.
As a former chairman he maintained a great interest in the ongoings of the Charolais Club and the
Society until quite recently. Caldwell loved meeting people and was very helpful in giving advice
and encouragement to young breeders. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and we
pass our condolences to wife Lila, children Robert, Desmond, Bill, Jayne, and grandchildren.
No bull works harder for the farmer, the plate and the planet

Obituary Margaret Atkinson
On leaving school at 16, Margaret
worked in the accounts department
at ICI Harrogate and studied maths
GCE and farm records and accounts
at evening class at Harrogate
College of Further Education.
Margaret continued her studies at
Lindsey Farm Institute at Riseholme
in Lincolnshire, gaining a distinction
in Farm Secretarial Work, typing,
private secretarial work and
shorthand.
Margaret returned to her beloved
Yorkshire and set up her own
business in agricultural accounts
and costings, working for two
titled families as well as farmers
with large pig units. Her business went from strength to strength
driven forward by the determined and forward-thinking lady we
all knew.
Margaret was an active member of Winksley cum Grantley Young
Farmers Club from an early age and it was there that she met
Michael, her husband to be. She was the club secretary and at
one point the district YFC secretary as well.
Margaret was a competitive sports player and played hockey
from the age of 13. Her passion for hockey never faltered,
despite having her two front teeth knocked out whilst playing for
the college. Typical of Margaret she was very competitive and
represented Yorkshire at hockey and woe betide anybody who
fouled her intentionally! She continued to play for Ripon Ladies
into her mid 50s.
Some 5 years after Mike had proposed to Margaret when he
was only 17 and a half, they were married at St Nicholas church,
West Tanfield on the 26th April 1969. They moved to Kirkby
Malzeard where Mike farmed, 12 months later Harvey was born,
so Margaret treated herself to 10 days maternity leave. Two years
later Bradley came along and this time the maternity leave was
reduced to 7 days. After another 2 years Lindsey was born and
the maternity leave was just 2 days, it was probably a weekend!
Several grandchildren arrived later.
It was often said that Margaret burned the candle at both ends.
She really did live life in the fast lane. She worked hard and played
hard, carrying out her farm secretarial business during the day
and playing hockey, tennis and badminton during the evenings
and weekends. Fortunately, her parents lived next door to do the
necessary babysitting. At weekends the boys were shipped off to
scouts, whilst Lindsey went with her dad to the markets to gather
his luck money.
Margaret loved to talk and no matter where she was or who she
was with, was never short of a word or two.
Always wanting to keep busy, Margaret was looking for a new
challenge for her 40th birthday, so one weekend they decided to
visit Billy and Jane Turner’s Brampton Charolais herd and bought
3 young Charolais cows and calves. Two of the cows were used
for embryo transfer and became the nucleus of the Mowbraypark
herd. The herd became very successful breeding some top-quality
animals such as Gigi, who won the Royal Show and was part of
a winning Burke Trophy team; Napoleon was a Perth supreme
champion; Paramount was a successful A I sire. They also bred
the male champion at the last Royal Show and so the list goes on.
The Mowbraypark herd were the first to export Charolais cattle to
Romania, as well as semen to Australia and Zimbabwe.
When Mike and Margaret visited
Brampton on that first visit, they
came into the house for a cup of
tea and Med and I got on with them
like a house on fire and we became
lifelong friends.
Margaret was committed to this
new chapter of her life and she was
appointed secretary of the Yorkshire
region of the British Charolais Cattle
Society and over the years helped
organise numerous functions to
promote the Charolais breed. She
held this position up to the present
time.
Mike and Margaret became very
involved in the global world of Charolais and attended several
overseas congresses, as well as events in the UK. Of particular
note was a trip to Sardinia when British Charolais took on the
French Herd Book at football. Of course, Margaret played and
came out with her old hockey tactics and took out the star player
of the French team by kicking his shins!
Margaret supported several charities and held fund raising
events for Cancer Research, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the
Addington Fund. Consequently, as a result of her tireless charity
work, she was invited to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party
where she met the Queen.
Margaret’s competitive side never faltered and when she retired
from sport, she decided politics would be the next challenge.
She became the secretary of the Kirkby Malzeard and District
Conservative Club, which sparked her initial interest to stand for
a seat on Harrogate Borough Council. She eventually won her
seat, where she served since May 2002, she went on to become a
North Yorkshire County Councillor in 2013. Margaret represented
Harrogate Borough Council on the Yorkshire Agricultural Society
Agriculture Committee. In May of this year Margaret was
appointed to serve as the last ever chair of North Yorkshire
County Council before it is replaced by a new unitary authority
next year.
Margaret, as always, was fully committed to this role and
attended as many civic functions as possible, often being escorted
by Mike or the county chauffeur. One particular highlight was
a recent invitation to meet the Prince and Princess of Wales at
Scarborough.
It was Mike’s preferred choice that she was driven to the various
functions so as to keep the body repair bills to a minimum, as
she tended to drive herself a little too fast on some of the narrow
country lanes.
She was such a high mileage model that it was a regular
occurrence for her to don her boiler suit on a morning and do
some farm jobs before dashing back to the house for a shower,
change of clothes, pick up the chain of office and be whisked
away by the chauffeur to a function.
Margaret was a busy person and as the old saying goes if you
want something done, ask a busy person and Margaret was
always there to help out.
There is no doubt Margaret’s untimely passing has left a hole in
many people’s lives but we should remember her as a positive,
hardworking, generous and caring person who doted on her
family.
Introducing ILROnline
What is ILROnline?
ILROnline is a new online service which allows members to interact more conveniently with their herd data. Members
will be able to manage registrations, ownership transfer, BREEDPLAN traits, and disposals, directly on the breed society’s
database. Members can also update their contact details and view their work-orders and invoices through a dedicated
and secure web portal. ILROnline is web-based, meaning it can be accessed anywhere, at any time, from any internetcapable
device.
Comparison to Internet Solutions
ILROnline offers a number of benefits when compared to the current system, Internet Solutions.
ILROnline
Internet Solutions
Allows access to the live database in real-time
Operates on a ‘copy’ of the database which is
only updated once every 24 hours.
Members can register animals and immediately
see them on the database.
‘Batch submission’ system which can be
unintuitive.
Allows users to view ‘Pending’ animals, and see
why they are ‘Pending’ (e.g. awaiting DNA)
‘Pending’ animals are not visible.
Allows members to transfer animals to others,
both other members and non-members
No transfer capability.
Users can download a wide range of paperwork,
including pedigree certificates (not available at
launch), invoices, DNA acknowledgements, and
BREEDPLAN documents.
Only BREEDPLAN documents and DNA
acknowledgements can be downloaded.
Members can submit BREEDPLAN weights &
traits, and view each animal’s traits.
Members can submit weights, but cannot view
traits that have been recorded previously.
New platform allows for future enhancement
and updates.
Further development ceased on platform.
When will it be available?
We are entering the final stages of testing for ILROnline, and we will be ready to begin rolling it out to our members in
early Spring 2023. At first, we intend to make ILROnline available to a small group of select members for further testing,
before introducing it to all of our members who pay their fees via Direct Debit.
If you would like to be among the first to trial ILROnline, please contact the office on 02476 697222
28
No bull works harder for the farmer, the plate and the planet

Electronic Certificates
During 2023 the Society will be rolling out electronic certificates. These will only be accessible via the new ILROonline
platform which is due to be rolled out very shortly to all our members that use the payment method of Direct Debit.
With the ever-spiralling costs of postage the society has decided that Certificates will be made available via this platform
to print whenever our members need, which will mean they have the most up to date information.
When electronic certificates are introduced, printed certificates will be chargeable at a rate yet to be decided.
Changes to Payment Methods
A natural progression will be that by January 2024 the Society will only be accepting direct debit as an exclusive payment
method, allowing every member to access ILROnline. If you currently pay by other methods now is the time to contact
the society to switch to Direct Debit as the clock is ticking.
Changes to DNA
Shortly we will be looking to cease sending out pre-labelled pending bags to members with every registration for similar
reasons. Instead, we will send you a batch of blank labelled bags at the start of the year so that you can take the hair
samples and send them in to society by simply writing your animals tag number and your herd prefix on the bag. The
number of bags will be based on your previous years registrations and further bags can be requested at any time, as
required.
No bull works harder for the farmer, the plate and the planet 29

A herd built to last - Jill Hunter - Harbro Beef & Sheep Nutritionist
With another year of rising input costs under the belt, it can
be exceptionally tempting to cut back and only spend on
essentials.
What is ‘essential’?
Many discussions have been had around how best to maintain
and improve herd performance and profitability – after all,
you are running a business. All inputs need to be carefully
scrutinised and their ability to improve efficiency of the herd
justified.
One place we can have an impact on the overall bottom line,
is by having a herd with inbuilt longevity. Cows that get in calf,
calve down every 365 days and live forever should be what
we strive for. In the dairy world, it is readily accepted rearing
heifers for replacements is a significant cost and the ones
which do not get in calf, do not rear a calf or do not make
it to second lactation, are a colossal strain on the business.
Heifers in a suckler herd are no different. Therefore, just as
much emphasis should be placed on rearing heifer calves for
replacements as the cattle being turned out for shows and
sales.
Epigenetics is a simple concept where we can influence
which performance genes are switched on and off in calves,
by the nutrition and environment of the cows and bull just
before bulling and at the point of conception. In reality, we
can influence the lifetime performance of calves, by getting
nutrition and management right around bulling. This is not
overly complex, although requires a careful overview and a
good plan alongside your nutritionist.
When it comes to turning out quality stock, genetics,
management and nutrition are all required. Charolais
cattle stockmen and women are well respected for expert
stockmanship and ability to turn out stock. Couple that with
quality genetics, it just leaves the nutrition. This is where we at
Harbro come in.
Our Stockman’s Choice pedigree range holds health,
immunity, fertility and longevity as its core values and it has
continued to grow in popularity since its launch two years ago.
Yet again, we were delighted to see so many customers doing
well at shows, sales and herd competitions this year.
Jill Hunter
• Rumi Defence, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
properties. It enhances immunity and
improves the function of vital organs such as the liver,
which is undoubtedly under pressure with the level of
performance expected from these animals.
Pedigree nutrition is at the heart of what we do; we have
a team with a vast range of experience on hand to tailor
nutrition plans to meet performance targets, to allow stock to
be turned out to the highest standards and the base herd to
be built to last.
Please get in touch to discuss how a Stockman’s Choice
nutrition plan can complement and enhance your
management and genetics.
From all of us at Harbro, we hope 2023 is full of success for all
Charolais cattle breeders!
The latest addition to the range is our powdered mineral,
which allows producers to get all the benefits of the
Stockman’s Choice mineral package, while feeding a cost
effective total mixed ration (TMR) at home. It is a top
quality, balanced mineral for high genetic merit growing and
conditioning animals, designed to support health, immunity,
fertility and longevity.
To give you a flavour, just two of the unique key features are:
• RumiTech, which is a Carbon Trust assured additive
proven to reduce methane emissions, while also increasing
feed conversion ratio and reducing cost of
production. A trial carried out with young bulls fed
RumiTech, showed an increase in loin eye muscle
area.
Johnes and Neospora .... a 21st century
solution to loss of herd genetics.
A diagnosis of Johnes or Neospora in a
cow or heifer can be devastating as it
often means the end of her breeding
career. Tyndale Vets have been boarding
these animals and producing disease free
embryos by IVF for several years with great
success.
In this article we look at practical control measures for these
important diseases and suggest an option for infected animals.
Johnes disease
This is probably the most difficult disease of cattle to control.
Animals are infected many years before they test positive
and indeed can be infectious to other animals whilst still
themselves testing negative.
The cause is a hardy bacterium called Mycobacterium
avium subsp. Paratuberculosis or thankfully MAP for short.
The vast majority of affected animals became infected under
6 months of age. Any test for the disease at this stage will
likely be negative. The bacteria lodge themselves in the small
intestine and take up permanent residence within the cells of
the calf. At this stage the animal is clinically well but at some
time, often years later, the bacteria begin to shed themselves
in the faeces allowing infection of other young animals. The
infected cow will also produce antibodies that will yield a
positive Johnes blood test result. Shedding and becoming
antibody test positive unfortunately do not occur at the same
time meaning that in an infected herd you do not necessarily
know which animals are shedding and which are not. However,
removing antibody positive animals significantly reduces the
amount of MAP in the environment, reducing the likelihood of
new infections.
To make matters worse, the stress of calving and lactation
make progression of the disease to the shedding stage more
likely. Calving also now means that there are multiple disease
susceptible calves around making the whole situation worse.
Many infected dams will infect their own calf and infection
becomes almost a certainty once the dam is antibody positive.
Remember though that this calf will be infected but will
remain antibody negative for several years. Antibody positive
dams will likely be shedding much more than antibody
negative ones and they become a risk to calves other than
their own, especially when calving indoors.
Practical control measures in a suckler herd are more limited
than in dairy herds as the calves will nearly always be running
with their dams and often a bull as well. Several control
schemes are available and a good place to start looking at
these is the CHECS website (www.CHECS.co.uk) which is an
industry led, not for profit organisation for cattle disease
control.
Fundamentally, all schemes work towards the same end
goal. They identify the positive animals, enabling them to be
removed from the portion of the herd with calves present.
Retaining daughters from a positive animal for breeding
purposes simply keeps, and indeed magnifies, the problem
within the herd for future years.
The good news is that infected cows and heifers produce
clean embryos from both conventional and IVF embryo
production processes. Whilst these animals are blood positive
but clinically well, success in embryo production is within the
normal range. Sadly, once an animal is clinically unwell results
are poor.
At Tyndale Vets we have a dedicated shed for blood positive
Johnes animals. Bedding is separated for spreading onto
arable land and contact with clean stock is avoided. These
cows and heifers have been successful in producing disease
free embryos for transfer back to the herd of origin thus
maintaining valuable genetic lines that might otherwise be
lost. We can produce embryos using a variety of bulls to
increase breeding options and this can be an opportunity to
introduce new lines instead.
Neospora disease.
Neospora is the main infectious cause of loss of pregnancy in
cattle, often between 5 and 7 months gestation. Remarkably
it was only discovered as recently as the 1980s. The cause
is a protozoan that is closely related to Toxoplasma, a
similar disease of sheep. Both parasites have 2 hosts in their
lifecycles. In the case of Neospora it has to go from cow to
dog and back again. Cows rarely infect other cows however
dogs can infect other dogs. The only exception to this is via the
placenta where an infected dam will almost inevitably infect
her unborn calf.
Reproductive losses are from reabsorption, abortion, stillbirth
and weak calves depending on the age of the affected foetus.
Many surveys have shown that most herds have at least one
positive animal and in some cases up to half the animals are
affected, although this is a worst case.
There are 2 main routes of infection
1. Infection of the unborn calf via its dam….most
common route of infection for a calf.
2. Cattle eating feed contaminated with infected dog
faeces.…less common route of infection but an
important mechanism for the introduction into the
herd.
Dogs are largely unaffected by the disease, remaining well
even when infected. They become infected through eating
raw meat or other infected material, maybe raw food waste or
cleansings from the calving yard. The infected dog may or may
not be yours. Many farms are crossed by public footpaths used
by dog walkers. The role of foxes is unknown and they may be
involved, no one is sure. The infected dog excretes infectious
oocytes for a period of time after infection until it becomes
immune. It then stops shedding. It is not known how many
times a dog can be infected but it is probably more than once.
Control of Neospora is easier than Johnes and involves only 3
main aspects:
1. Identify affected cows and don’t keep their heifer
calves for breeding. Previous heifer calves from
affected animals are probably affected and they also
should not be used to breed replacements for the
herd. Affected heifers often have some reproductive
problem.
2. Avoid dog faeces contaminating cattle feed.
3. Avoid dogs becoming infected by only feeding cooked
meat and avoiding scavenging of cleansings.
The good news is that cows rarely infect each other, even at
calving, apart from the dam to daughter infection within the
womb. A Neospora positive bull is no risk to the herd.
Again CHECS offers detailed disease control options.
Whilst the control of Neospora is much easier and the results
seen much more quickly than for Johnes, it still remains the
case that it is difficult to justify retaining a positive cow or
heifer for breeding purposes if the heifer calves are intended
to be kept for breeding themselves.
As with Johnes disease, Neospora infected animals produce
clean embryos. Again, Tyndale Vets are able to house these
infected animals and produce disease free embryos to return
to you to maintain and advance your herd genetics.
With Charolais taking top prices at
local markets across the province, it’s
no surprise that places were hotly
contested for the title “NI Charolais
Suckler Herd of the Year”. The
competition attracted significant
entries from commercials breeders
across the province. The Northern
Ireland Charolais Club recognises
the importance of producing quality
beef and sought to promote and
demonstrate the strength of a
Charolais sire on the herd. The club
encouraged entries from breeders who
were focused on the promotion of
the best and most sustainable Suckler
Herds in Northern Ireland. With all
herds producing commercial calves
using a Pedigree Charolais Bull.
A special thanks to our judge, Albert
Connelly, who took on the task of
judging the herds. Albert took into
consideration several factors such as
calving pattern, calving return and
carried out an on-farm assessment
before arriving at his decision.
The Northern Ireland Charolais
indebted to all their sponsors for
the competition- SAFE, F.S. Heron,
South Midlands - Steve Hookway
I hope you all had an enjoyable
Christmas and I Wish you a happy New
Year. Our breed looks to be turning a
corner, sales of Charolais bulls seem
to be on the up with feed conversion
rates now more important than ever.
Let’s hope the trend continues to grow
throughout 2023 and we can all enjoy
an increased demand for our stock as
farmers strive for greater efficiency
and turn to Charolais.
Welshpool Nov Sale
A good trade was enjoyed at the
autumn Welshpool Sale.
Sharon and I (Waldencourt) had two
bulls forward. Waldencourt Statesman
a January born bull won his class and
sold for 4,200gns.
Our young July bull Waldencourt
Sunnyboy was also placed first in his
class and sold for 5,500gns. Both bulls
were sired by Westcarse Houdini.
The Bostock’s from Roundshill sold
their bull Roundshill Sune for 2,800gns
they also sold Roundshill Sormer a
Female for 2,000gns.
With the sale Ricky and Christine
Butler from the Carrigbeg herd offered
two heifers for sale . The sale of these
two animals will see them retire from
cattle breeding. Carrigbeg Sweetie a
Blelack Digger daughter topped the
female trade and sold for 3,450gns.
Carrigbeg Sunday by Davally Illusion
sold for 2,950gns.
Ricky and Christine Butler Carrigbeg
Charolais
With the sale of their last two heifers
at Welshpool in November Ricky and
Christine Butler have retired from
breeding Charolais cattle.
The herd has represented our region in
many shows and sales over the years.
Ricky and Christine hardly missed a
Three Counties show over many years
and enjoyed a lot of success winning
many red rosettes. Anyone who has
Waldencourt Sunnyboy sold for 5,500gns from
Waldencourt Charolais
enjoyed a cold beer at the show over
the years has them to thank.
Their fridge travelled to the show and
back every year without fail. They have
enjoyed a good trade for many bulls at
the Welshpool sales. Carrigbeg bulls
showing great growth that few could
match. Thankyou to Ricky and Christine
on behalf of our Region.
Obituary Jeremy Hoskins (by PJ
Maher)
Jeremy Hoskins has been breeding
Charolais cattle for about 35 years - his
herd was Parkcorner which is situated
near Cirencester.
He was a very active member both
within the society and our region. He
supported all the local and national
shows, meetings, open days and
general social events. He was a judge
for the breed and judged at most of the
top shows and sales.
He also represented this region on the
council.
Jeremy was very knowledgeable about
the breed, and was always happy
to help anyone who had a problem
either with their animals or with an
administrative query.
PROMOTIONAL GOODS
Due to the rebranding of the Charolais logo we are looking to
bring a fresh new look to the promotional goods later this year.
He was a
particularly nice
man!!!
He made sure
that elderly
members were
looked after,
often going out
of his way to get
them to functions
etc.
He encouraged
young people
to learn about
specifics of the
Charolais breed
and often hosted
the young stock
judging at his
farm.
I think Jeremy will be sadly missed by
all who knew him.
Christmas Dinner
The South Midlands Christmas dinner
was held in early December at the
Royal Oak Much Marcle, Herefordshire.
It was really nice to see twelve
members attending, a nice chance to
catch up with a few people that we
haven’t seen for some time due to
covid. A nice meal and great company.
Three Counties show
The Three Counties will go ahead as
per usual in June. We will as a region
put some effort into the show to look
after our exhibitors as we normally
do. If you are considering showing
your cattle this year please consider
the Three Counties we have a great
showground and great housing and
in the charolais section which was
most encouraging and a jam packed
on the day. A very well done to all
the exhibitors and we look forward to
Committee Christmas Catch Up
The Cairngorm Hotel, Aviemore saw
the annual Christmas catch up take
place with club committee members
attending for a most sociable and
refreshment filled evening. This year
saw all our members manage to
make it to the correct establishment
in plenty time!! All 22 of us managed
to take over the hotel main foyer
for pre-dinner drinks, followed by a
most enjoyable Christmas meal in the
conservatory and our after-dinner
entertainment was supplied by many in
the company but most memorable was
Jimmy Wilson for providing us all with
some first-class entertainment. The
next day was a long one for many I am
sure but well worth it. I look forward to
seeing you all again in December 2023,
same time, and same place.
Congratulations
Many congratulations from us all
here at Scottish & Northern to Robbie
McNeil & Rachel Ralston on the arrival
of Mia Penny McNeil who was born on
23 November 2022. A little sister for a
proud big brother Archie.
Ruby Wedding Celebrations
In August last year Iain & Rhona
celebrated their Ruby Wedding
Anniversary with an afternoon
celebration at Fintry Rugby Club for
family & close friends. A fantastic
afternoon was had by all, with lots
of memories talked about and many
memories to take away. Then onto
October which saw the dispersal of
their Lochend Herd - a herd to be
very proud of and one which they had
established nearly 30 years ago. The
sale was a tremendous success for
them with a top price of 21,000gns
for the duo of Lochend Lightning and
her calf Lochend Thunder. On behalf
of us all here at Scottish & Northern
we would like to wish Iain & Rhona all
the very best for the next chapter and
we have no doubt there will be lots of
fun to be had with their grandchildren
Alba, Jess & Andrew.
No bull works harder for the farmer, the plate and the planet 53

South East - Naomi Jones
October saw the return of the SECA
Herd Competition. Due to reduced
herds in the area, we decided to
combine the pedigree and commercial
herd competition to the same time to
give the judge more to view. We are
very grateful to Andrew Sellick (from
the South West region) for judging
and his wife, Vickie, for keeping him
company for the journey. The results
(see below) were announced at
another SECA virtual quiz night which
we continue to run regularly. Andrew
joined us and shared his reasons for his
placings. The next quiz is planned for
Thursday 9 th February 2023 @19:30.
If you would like any further details of
events, please do not hesitate to get in
touch with any of the SECA committee
via email or Facebook.
Andrew Sellick
It was an honour and pleasure to be invited
to judge the South East Charolais
herd competition, whilst short on numbers
of entries the quality of the cattle
was a credit to all involved. I would
like to thank everyone for their hospitality
and giving up their time to show
us around their herds. It was great to
not only to see the cattle but to get to
know the people behind them.
Without exception every herd had
some very noteworthy cattle and unfortunately
not all of them can win
their class.
Thrunton Orkney
We started our tour of the South East
with a visit to the Chesham & Silver
herds of the Harman Family. Having
recently sold a good number of cattle
the herd was not “complete” however
there were some tremendous cows
still there and it was here that I found
the heifer calf Silver Tonia that stuck in
the memory when I placed her as best
2022 heifer calf. It was also good to see
stock bull Balthayock Muskateer and
the stamp he has left in cattle for the
Harman’s as well as the cattle we saw
the next day at the Chameran herd.
Charolais cross by Thrunton Orkney
Vexour Lemon
A quick dash around North West London
(as quick as you can on the m25)
took us to the Waterman Herd of the
Jones and family. The lasting memory
from the visit being some eye-catching
young heifers coming through showing
the cows are working well. The standout
was the appropriately named Waterman
Sparkle.
Next stop, the highly impressive set up
at Vexour and thanks must go to Martin
for taking the time to show us around
in the middle of calving not only with
the Charolais but the Angus and Herefords
as well and Jan for covering for
him whilst he did. By far the largest
herd of our trip the cattle were consistent
and performing well with some
outstanding cattle amongst them. It
was also good to see the Charolais
influence across the commercial cattle
54
No bull works harder for the farmer, the plate and the planet

Some of the Vexour herd
with the Charolais working well across
native cows.
Our final stop, Highfields Park Farm
and the Chameran Herd. A recently
formed herd compared to some it was
good to meet John and Sheri Hughes.
A strong herd throughout with some
superb cows, the real stand out cow for
me was Edenhurst Jingle with a really
smart heifer calf at foot and arguably
the pick of the yearling heifers was
her calf from 2021. I found my pick
of the 2022 bull calves in the form of
Charmeran Titan. The final paddock
John and Sheri took us to was to see 5
cracking yearling heifers mostly by the
aforementioned Balthayock Muskateer.
Finally, I would like to thank the South
East Charolais Club for inviting me
judge the herd competition and for
allowing us to gate crash the club quiz
night.
Registration Checks
1 Check that the year letter, tag number and names are correct YEAR LETTER FOR 2023 IS U;
2 Different names are used;
3 The birth registration forms are signed;
4 A I dates, and service letters are included if a registered bull owned by another member has been used;
5 Check that the service sire has been DNA-genotyped;
6 Check all boxes are completed accurately and the correct fees accompany the forms;
7 N.B Tattooing of Charolais calves is no longer compulsory but optional for breeders;
DNA PARENTAGE CHECKING
All animals sold privately to pedigree herds must be tested and at least sire verified before they are transferred. This will
be at the vendors cost unless, at the discretion of the society, the animal has been purchased from a non member, a membership
which has ceased or prior to this rule being implemented on 01/03/2020, in which case the cost will default to the purchaser.
All animals entered into a Society sale must be at least sire verified.
All animals’ samples must be either already being processed by the lab or have their DNA profile already completed at the time that
they are entered into a Society sale.
Furthermore, if the DNA profile, parentage verification and myostatin tests are not complete prior to the sale catalogue going to
print (usually approximately three weeks before the sale) then the animal will not be permitted to attend
Having a pending sample stored at the Society office, will not count as the sample being processed at the lab, therefore it is the
responsibility of the member to check that the animal’s sample has been sent to the lab prior to entering the animal into a Society
sale.
All animals will have its parentage verification status displayed in the sale catalogue as either PV, SV or DV. In addition the parentage
verification status will also be displayed on pen cards.
Please note there is a saving of £5.00 + VAT on DNA testing for submitting pending hair samples for animals under 10 months of
age.
Breed Information
Charolais is the leading terminal beef sire noted for its fast growth and excellent conformation. Charolais cattle are creamy white
through to wheaten in colour. Bulls are noted for muscling, with excellent loins, good hindquarters and deep second thigh, while
females are less heavily muscled and have well developed udders. Charolais stand on four strong feet and legs and should be alert.
Charolais Males
• The Charolais bull should be a well-muscled animal on good strong feet and legs to carry the heavy weights associated
with the breed.
• The head should have a wide muzzle with a strong jaw placement.
• The eyes should be set reasonably wide apart.
• The ears should be big.
• The head should be sat proud on a strong muscular neck.
• The back should be long and level without dips, particularly behind the shoulder.
• There should be a good heart room and a minimum amount of brisket in the forequarter.
• The tail-setting should be set comfortably into good wide plates over the hindquarters of the bull.
• The hindquarters should also have a good depth of second thigh and should be well rounded.
• There can be two extreme types of Charolais which should be discouraged. One type would be the tall, flat sided bull
which has a slack back and a poor hindquarter. This type has no place in modern day beef production (and indeed
never has). The second would be the double-muscled heavy shouldered bull which invariably has associated fertility and
calving problems.
Charolais Females
• The females should have a feminine appearance and should not be heavily muscled and masculine in appearance as this
sort tends to be either poor or irregular breeders.
• The head should be wide muzzled with a longer rather than boxy type appearance. Like the bulls, the head should be
alert.
• The back should be long and level with a good spring of rig and a minimum of brisket in the forequarter.
• The tail setting should not be dropped and preferably should be slightly raised as this is alleged to be associated with
easier calving.
• The legs should be of strong flat bone on good sound feet.
• In the case of cows, the udder should be of good capacity with four well-formed teats for suckled calf production.
• The colour of Charolais cattle is generally creamy white through to a light tan colour. Broken coloured cattle are not to be
encouraged
BVD VACCINATIONS
BVD VACCINATIONS - ALL Charolais cattle forward at BCCS auspices sales are to be vaccinated against BVD (Bovine Viral
Diarrhoea) as per the manufacturers instructions.
For herds which are in a CHeCS approved health scheme and are BVD accredited they do not have to be BVD blood antigen
tested, but must be fully BVD vaccinated.
For the herds which are not BVD accredited, then potential sale cattle should be BVD antigen tested negative, and
given the first BVD vaccination on the same day as the blood sample is taken. If the BVD antigen test is negative, the
animals should then be given the second vaccination 3-4 weeks later (if using a double jab vaccine). BVD antigen testing
certificates must accompany the cattle to the sale or they will be rejected from the sale.
IMPORTANT - Do not vaccinate cattle just prior to the sales as immunity to BVD will not have built up sufficiently.
CATTLE NOT FULLY VACCINATED FOR BVD WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ENTRY TO THE AUCTION CENTRE
