Charolais, the breed that leads the way<br />

As we see an end to 2022 and the start of <strong>2023</strong>, we can look back on 2022 as a busy but very successful year for the<br />

society and look forward to <strong>2023</strong> with huge positivity and excitement for the breed.<br />

Autumn Sales<br />

Stirling<br />

There was a lot of negativity around the run up to the autumn sales in the press with it being so dry throughout the<br />

summer and feed, fertiliser and fuel costs so high. However, Charolais sired suckled calves were still out stripping<br />

everything else in the store ring, this showed at the bull sales with the breed having another flyer of a sale. With 84<br />

bulls changing hands to a top of 28,000gns, an average of £7467.50 and an 82% clearance, what was even more pleasing<br />

was there were 21 more bulls sold on the year which is a whopping 33% increase in numbers sold and 7% increase in<br />

clearance rate. This is down to the commercial men striving to produce the most efficient and desirable suckled calf<br />

which leaves them the best return on there capital, this being a Charolais.<br />

The show was very ably judged by Duncan MacGregor Corrie herd his Champion was Glenericht Superb for W K & P<br />

Drysdale selling for 20,000gns to L Houston of the Gretnahouse herd. Top price was Falleninch Stormzy for AB Hornall<br />

selling for 28,000gns in a 4 way split to RA Milne & Son, Elgin; R & N Barclay, Harestone; A MacGregor, Allanfauld and H<br />

Goldie, Goldies herd.<br />

Dispersal Sales<br />

October also saw a very sad day losing two stalwarts of the breed in Iain Millar, Lochend and Snowdon Oates,<br />

Ravensworth who both dispersed their herds. The depth of breeding in both herds was clear to see with the trade<br />

reflecting the years of dedication and hard work to get their herds to where they were. With Iain selling to a top of<br />

21,000gns for an outstanding yolk in Lochend Lightning and her bull calf at foot Lochend Thunder. Snowdon sold to a<br />

top of 8,500gns for Ravensworth Nicola. I must thank both men for all you have done for the breed over the years, Iain<br />

being a past Chairman of the Society as well. Both of you will always be welcome at any Society event as your wealth of<br />

knowledge and experience is invaluable to the breed as well as the many friends that you have both made.<br />

Swatragh<br />

The show and sale in Swatragh was Judged by Stuart Barclay Harestone Herd and he had an outstanding show of cattle<br />

to judge with depth and quality from start to finish, it was a credit to the breeders. A special mention has to go to both<br />

of the female classes, they were as good a show of females as you would see anywhere in the UK.<br />

33 bulls sold to average £4239.77 with a clearance rate of 63%. Two bulls had joint top price of 7,200gns, firstly for the<br />

Champion Drumconnis Santiago from J McGrath and secondly for the Junior Champion Brogher Senator from T Phair.<br />

Jack Smith had an exceptional draft sale of females which topped at 10,400gns for a 9-month-old heifer calf Bessiebell<br />

Tilly.<br />

Welshpool<br />

The show was extremely well judged by David MacKenzie of the Thurso herd. There was a total of 41 bulls change<br />

hands at an average of £4582.87 and a 76% clearance. The Overall Champion was Esgob Star from GM Jones and sold<br />

to 6,000gns. Top price on the day was 8,000gns for Maerdy Sermen from D E Evans. This was a very solid trade of bulls<br />

again backed up by strong trade for Charolais sired suckled calves in Wales & Southern England.<br />

White Gold Sale<br />

Friday 20 <strong>January</strong> is the second White Gold sale following on from last years very successful debut sale where females<br />

topped at 18,000gns for Tweeddale Rosemary. It’s a great opportunity for new and established herds to buy some of the<br />

top genetics within the breed. This year there are 37 entries forward.<br />

AHDB & Bull Sale figures<br />

AHDB has released there most up to date (August 2022) continental breed rankings in which Charolais come out top<br />

on Carcass weight ranking, Average daily carcass gain ranking and joint top on days to slaughter ranking. This puts the<br />

breed top on 2 and joint top on 1 out of 5 rankings.<br />

If you compare 2021 to 2022 figures of bulls sold though society sales there is a huge lift of 22% more bulls sold on the<br />

year. With the ever-declining number of suckler cows in the UK this shows that the breed is bucking the trend.<br />

These two sets of figures are hugely encouraging & satisfying for me as it shows that the breed and its breeders are<br />

doing things right and we are delivering a product to our customer that is efficient, that can work in any farming<br />

situation in the UK whilst leaving the farmer with the best return on their investment by hitting the desired carcass<br />

specification traits when finished. This is something we need to keep building on and concentrate on gaining an even<br />

larger market share of the BCMS Charolais cross calf registrations. If we can continue to work more closely with the<br />

commercial farmer, exposing the breed to them and its benefits then I see no reason why we can’t increase this market<br />

share year on year. In turn this will help our members to continue to sell the same if not more bulls in the upcoming<br />

years.<br />

Charolais Youth Sponsorship<br />

Following on from a very successful youth final at Balthayock Farm by kind permission of Major David Walter we are<br />

pleased to announce that we have secured the backing of Harbro as our sole main sponsor of Charolais youth for the<br />

next 3 years, this is hugely exciting as the backing of Harbro and the knowledge of their team will be invaluable to<br />

the youth. We hope with workshops and seminars we will be able to educate them on the correct preparation of the<br />

animals for show & sales as well as how to manage cows pre & post calving. The young breeders are the future of the<br />

breed and without the next generation we have nothing, I am a very strong supporter of the youth system and trying<br />

to help them as much as we can. I am also delighted to announce that the final for <strong>2023</strong> will by held at Peter Dongers,<br />

Seawell herd on the 2 nd of July. This will again be an excellent venue and experience for the young breeders. We are<br />

immensely grateful to Peter for agreeing to host the final this year.<br />

Margaret Atkinson<br />

It is with immense sadness that Margaret suddenly passed away in November, Margaret was a huge stalwart of the<br />

breed with her husband Mike who ran the exceptionally successful Mowbarypark herd. Margaret was the secretary for<br />

the Yorkshire Charolais club and always willing to offer her help at every opportunity, she always had a smile on her face<br />

and was great company to be around and did so much for the local community and charities. Our thoughts and deepest<br />

condolences go to Mike, Lindsey and all the family. Taken so suddenly but never forgotten.<br />

I would like to thank all the staff at BCCS for the continued hard work and dedication. My fellow council members for all<br />

they do in helping drive the breed forward in the right direction. They give up a lot of time and their efforts are greatly<br />

appreciated.<br />

Thanks, must also go to all the regional Charolais clubs for all they do throughout the<br />

year in promoting the breed at local events.<br />

Lastly and most definitely not least, a huge thank you to all of the commercial<br />

farmers who have purchased Charolais bulls throughout the year. As a society we<br />

want to continue working very closely with you all to produce a bull that’s versatile<br />

and can work in any system, in any part of the country, while still leaving best return<br />

of investment.<br />

I want to wish you all the best for <strong>2023</strong>. Here is to another successful year for the<br />

The sale<br />

followed on Monday 17 October, with<br />

84 bulls changing hands, to a top price<br />

of 28,000gns and an average price of<br />

£7467.50 with an 82% clearance.<br />

Commenting on the sale, Chairman<br />

Allen Drysdale said “This was an<br />

incredible sale for everyone involved<br />

in the breed with an improvement of<br />

21 more bulls sold when compared<br />

to 2021’s October sale – this equates<br />

to a whopping 33% increase in the<br />

number of bulls sold and a 7% increase<br />

in clearance rate. The facts are there to<br />

see in black and white, with Charolais<br />

sired suckled calves topping the<br />

markets week in week out throughout<br />

the country. Commercial farmers are<br />

striving to produce the most efficient<br />

animal that will leave them the best<br />

return on their capital, this being a<br />

Charolais.”<br />

Following the bull sale, 13 females<br />

were sold – including a draft of quality<br />

heifers from the Caithness herd.<br />

Finally, proceedings closed with the<br />

dispersals of the renowned Lochend<br />

and Ravensworth herds, which reached<br />

top prices of 21,000gns and 8,500gns<br />

respectively.<br />

Taking the top price, at 28,000gns, was<br />

the day’s Reserve Junior Champion –<br />

Falleninch Stormzy from A B Hornall of<br />

the Falleninch herd in Stirlingshire. This<br />

wasn’t Stormzy’s first taste of success;<br />

he had previously attained the title of<br />

Charolais Junior Champion at the Royal<br />

Highland Show earlier in the year. This<br />

impressive 17-month-old was sired by<br />

the well-known 70,000gns Barnsford<br />

Ferny, and his dam is Falleninch Orla,<br />

a homebred daughter of Falleninch<br />

Imperator. Stormzy was purchased<br />

under a 4-way joint ownership<br />

agreement between R A Milne & Sons,<br />

Elgin herd; R & N Barclay, Harestone<br />

herd; A MacGregor, Allanfauld herd;<br />

and H Goldie, Goldies herd.<br />

Close behind Stormzy, at 26,000gns,<br />

was the Senior Champion Rutherston<br />

Sonny from the herd of A Anderson<br />

of the Rutherston<br />

herd in Angus.<br />

by Alwent Goldbar<br />

Rutherston Sonny at 26,000gns<br />

– a trait leader in 200-, 400-, and<br />

600-day weight EBVs. Sonny was also<br />

purchased under a joint ownership,<br />

this time going to J H C Campbell &<br />

Sons of the Thrunton herd, and R A & J<br />

Blyth of the Marwood herd.<br />

The final bull to reach the 20,000gns<br />

mark was Glenericht Superb, who<br />

dominated the previous day’s judging<br />

and won the titles of Overall Male<br />

Champion and Intermediate Champion,<br />

and formed part of the Group-of-Three<br />

Champion team. This 18-month-old<br />

is from the Glenericht herd of W K &<br />

P Drysdale, Perthshire, and was sired<br />

by their successful stock bull Caylers<br />

Oxford. Superb’s dam is Glenericht<br />

Jackie, a daughter of the 12,000gns<br />

Taking the next highest price of<br />

16,000gns was 18-month-old Ricnick<br />

Sonnybill, bred by R F McCornick of<br />

the Ricnick herd in Dumfriesshire.<br />

Sonnybill had previously earned the<br />

titles of Reserve Junior Champion at<br />

the Great Yorkshire Show and Breed<br />

Champion at the Dumfries Show this<br />

summer. Sonnybill was sired by the<br />

popular AI bull Harestone Hercules,<br />

and his dam Ricnick Lingo is a daughter<br />

of Whitecliffe Harlequin – a trait leader<br />

in 400- and 600-day weight EBVs.<br />

Sonnybill will be heading to Newton<br />

Stewart, Wigtownshire, under the<br />

care of successful bidder Shennanton<br />

Livestock.<br />

Selling for the next highest price<br />

of 12,500gns was 18-month-old<br />

Allanfauld Shogun from A MacGregor,<br />

Allanfauld herd. This strapping bull<br />

has a number of familiar names in his<br />

pedigree, having been sired by the<br />

easy-calving Maerdy Norseman, and<br />

out of Allanfauld Mazurka, a daughter<br />

of the 11,000gns Balmyle Jasper.<br />

Shogun caught the attention of J More,<br />

who secured the final bid and will be<br />

taking him home to Kippen, Stirling.<br />

Two bulls reached the next highest<br />

price of 12,000gns – the first of which<br />

was Glenernan Sprinter from W &<br />

N Milne of the Glenernan herd in<br />

Aberdeenshire. Sprinter was sired by<br />

the 17,000gns Elgin Jagger, and his<br />

dam Corskellie Lily goes back to Wesley<br />

Galleon. At 21 months old, Sprinter was<br />

one of the oldest bulls forward for sale,<br />

but this did not deter bidders. Winning<br />

the bid was T Smith & Son, and Sprinter<br />

will be heading back to Aberdeenshire<br />

to their holding in Alford.<br />

Next to reach 12,000gns was<br />

Glenericht Scotsman, another offering<br />

from W K & P Drysdale and a half<br />

brother to the Overall Champion.<br />

Scotsman also formed part of the<br />

Group-of-Three Champion team. This<br />

18-month-old was also sired by Caylers<br />

Oxford, and his dam is Glenericht<br />

Naomi, a daughter of the 15,000gns<br />

Maerdy Hwre. Scotsman will be making<br />

the trip to Fortrose, Inverness, to the<br />

holding of winning bidder J McKenzie.<br />

A further two bulls secured the<br />

next highest price of 11,500gns.<br />

The first of these was 20-monthold<br />

Hollywell Sorrento, from the<br />

Hollywell herd of J & S Middleton,<br />

Aberdeenshire. Sorrento is by the<br />

ever-popular Whitecliffe James, and<br />

his dam Hollywell Italy introduces<br />

some Irish genetics, being a daughter<br />

of Clonoulty Andraemon. Sorrento<br />

will be journeying over to Morpeth,<br />

Northumberland, under the care of<br />

final bidder F T Walton.<br />

Next to reach 11,500gns was<br />

19-month-old Goldies Sultan from H<br />

Goldie of the Goldies herd in Dumfries.<br />

This impressive young bull was sired<br />

by Gretnahouse Heman, who is a trait<br />

leader in several EBVs including Calving<br />

Ease Direct and 200, 400, & 600-<br />

day weights. Sultan’s dam is Goldies<br />

Goldengirl, a homebred daughter<br />

of Goldies Ambassador. Sultan will<br />

be heading over to Ballindalloch,<br />

Morayshire, courtesy of successful<br />

bidder J Stuart.<br />

A total of five bulls managed to secure<br />

the next highest price of 10,000gns.<br />

First up was the Reserve Senior<br />

Champion Bonnykelly Scotsman<br />

from R Leggat of the Bonnykelly herd,<br />

Aberdeenshire. Scotsman was sired<br />

by the 10,000gns Gretnahouse Ivory,<br />

and his dam Bonnykelly Jennifer is<br />

a Kersknowe Clansman daughter.<br />

Winning the bid for this striking<br />

20-month-old was Nether Balfour<br />

Farms Park, who will be taking him<br />

back to Drumolk, Banchory.<br />

Next to sell for 10,000gns was another<br />

from J & S Middleton – 19-monthold<br />

Hollywell Seoirse. Seoirse has an<br />

impressive pedigree behind him – he<br />

was sired by the 18,000gns Thrunton<br />

Fairfax, and his dam Hollywell Noami<br />

is a daughter of popular easy-calver<br />

Blelack Digger. Seoirse caught the<br />

eye of G P Udale & Son, and they will<br />

be introducing him to their herd in<br />

Glenernan Sprinter at 12,000gns Glenericht Scotsman at 12,000gns Hollywell Sorrento at 11,500gns<br />

Goldies Sultan at 11,500gns Bonnykelly Scotsman at 10,000gns Hollywell Seoirse at 10,000gns<br />

Penrith, Cumbria.<br />

Also reaching 10,000gns was<br />

17-month-old Corrie Stampede, bred<br />

by D MacGregor of the well-known<br />

Corrie herd in Glasgow. Stampede is an<br />

excellent example of French genetics,<br />

having been sired by the French-born<br />

Harestone Oscar. His dam Corrie Lilo<br />

is a daughter of Gavinburn Harry and<br />

goes back to the easy calving Blelack<br />

Digger. Stampede was purchased under<br />

joint ownership between J Irvine &<br />

Son of Ballindalloch, Banffshire and D<br />

Muirhead of Arbroath, Angus.<br />

Next to sell for 10,000gns was<br />

17-month-old Gretnahouse Smiler<br />

from L Houston of the Gretnahouse<br />

herd in Dumfriesshire. Smiler was<br />

sired by Westcarse Jimmy, who is a<br />

trait leader in 200-, 400-, and 600-day<br />

weight EBVs, and his dam Gretnahouse<br />

Nannabel is by the 12,000gns Wesley<br />

Equinox. Smiler is certain to go on<br />

to perform well for his new owners<br />

W J Morrison & Sons of MacDuff,<br />

Banffshire.<br />

The final bull to reach the 5-figure<br />

mark, also at 10,000gns, was the<br />

day’s Reserve Overall Male Champion<br />

and Junior Champion, Balthayock<br />

Sebastian from the herd of D F W<br />

H & N R Walter in Perth. Sebastian<br />

is following in his sire Balthayock<br />

Loyalist’s footsteps – he had also won<br />

the Junior Championship at Stirling<br />

in 2016 before selling for 14,000gns.<br />

Sebastian’s dam is Balthayock Lucia, a<br />

daughter of Ugie Echo. This strapping<br />

young lad will be making the long trip<br />

down to the Vexour herd in Surrey,<br />

to his new home under the care of J<br />

Boomaars.<br />

Thirteen females were sold after the<br />

conclusion of the bull sales, with the<br />

highest price of 5,500gns being secured<br />

by the Female Champion Harestone<br />

Royalgem from R & N Barclay of the<br />

Harestone herd in Aberdeenshire.<br />

Royalgem has some excellent names<br />

in her pedigree – she was sired by<br />

the 40,000gns Maerdy Newman, and<br />

her dam Harestone Locket is by the<br />

25,000gns Inverlochy Ferdie. Securing<br />

the final bid for this stunning young<br />

heifer was K Watret of the Annanview<br />

herd, Dumfriesshire.<br />

Following on from the female sale<br />

was the dispersal of the well-known<br />

Lochend herd, run by Iain Millar<br />

in Stirlingshire. The top price was<br />

an incredible 21,000gns, and was<br />

secured by an outfit consisting of a<br />

beautiful cow Lochend Lightning and<br />

her 5-month-old bull calf Lochend<br />

Thunder. Lightning was sired by the<br />

sought-after Oldstone Egbert, and her<br />

dam Lochend Glitter is a daughter of<br />

the 28,000gns Brampton Nacodar.<br />

Her bull calf Thunder was sired by<br />

Swalesmoor Oscar, whom the Millars<br />

purchased for 10,000gns in 2020. After<br />

a furious round of bidding, the hammer<br />

finally came down with D Sawrij of the<br />

Swalesmoor herd in Selkirkshire taking<br />

the last bid.<br />

Finally, the dispersal of the<br />

Ravensworth herd, from W S Oates<br />

in Tyne and Wear, concluded the<br />

day’s proceedings. The top price<br />

was 8,500gns, and was secured by<br />

Ravensworth Nicole. Nicole was sired<br />

by Goldies Judge, and she is out of<br />

Ravensworth Ivy, a daughter of the<br />

11,000gns Thrunton Bombadier. Nicole<br />

had been scanned in-calf to Goldies<br />

Orchard in May 2022, and both her<br />

and her future calf are sure to perform<br />

admirably for new owner E Vaughan of<br />

Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.<br />

Show Results:<br />

The Northern Ireland Charolais Club’s<br />

final sale of the season took place on<br />

Friday 4 November 2022, and saw a<br />

total of 33 bulls sold to an average<br />

price of £4239.77 and a 63% clearance.<br />

The bull sale was followed by the<br />

female sale, in which 9 animals found<br />

new homes with an average price<br />

of £4386.67. Finally, proceedings<br />

closed with a draft sale from J Smyth’s<br />

Bessiebell herd, which reached an<br />

incredible top price of 10,400gns.<br />

The top price for bulls was 7,200gns,<br />

and was secured by two entries. The<br />

first to go under the hammer was<br />

the day’s Overall Male Champion<br />

and Supreme Champion: 18-monthold<br />

Drumconnis Santiago from J<br />

McGrath in Dromore, Co. Tyrone.<br />

Santiago’s dam, Drumconnis Jessica,<br />

is a homebred daughter of multiple<br />

show-winning heifer Wesley Euphoria<br />

and goes back to the 20,000gns Perth<br />

Champion Thrunton Trojan. He was<br />

sired by Sportsmans Monarch, who<br />

sold for the top price of 12,000gns at<br />

Stirling in 2017. This stylish young lad<br />

caught the eye of T Butler, who won<br />

the bid and will be taking Santiago<br />

home to Ballycastle, Co. Antrim.<br />

Next to sell for 7,200gns was<br />

Fermanagh. Senator was sired by<br />

the ever-popular AI bull Whitecliffe<br />

Icon. Securing the final bid for this<br />

strapping young bull was J Delargy of<br />

Cushendall, Co. Antrim.<br />

Selling for the next highest price of<br />

7,000gns was the day’s Reserve Overall<br />

Male Champion Drumilly Samson.<br />

Samson was bred by J Paynter of the<br />

Drumilly herd in Co. Armagh, and<br />

was sired by the French-born AI bull<br />

Invictus. Samson’s dam is Drumilly<br />

Favourite, a daughter of the soughtafter<br />

Oldstone Egbert. The successful<br />

bidder for this young bull was W<br />

Donnell of Donemana, Co. Tyrone.<br />

The next highest price was 6,800gns,<br />

and was secured by 16-month-old<br />

Maerdy Sermon top price at 8,000gns<br />

The 2022 Autumn sale season drew<br />

to a close on Friday 10 November<br />

with the annual show and sale held<br />

at Welshpool Livestock Sales. Seven<br />

strong classes of bulls were judged by<br />

the discerning eye of David Mackenzie<br />

of the Thurso herd, along with his<br />

shadow judge Edward Robinson. A<br />

total of 41 bulls and 3 females sold<br />

over the course of the day, with bulls<br />

reaching an average price of £4582.87<br />

with a 76% clearance.<br />

The top price of the day was 8,000gns,<br />

and was attained by 16-month-old<br />

Maerdy Sermon from the well-known<br />

Maerdy herd of D E Evans in Flintshire.<br />

Sermon has quite the impressive<br />

pedigree, being sired by the 18,000gns<br />

Goldies Linford, and going back to the<br />

26,000gns Maerdy Hearthrob on his<br />

dam’s side. Securing the final bid for<br />

this young lad was T N Lightfoot of<br />

Callington, Cornwall.<br />

The hammer came down twice for<br />

the next highest price of 7,000gns,<br />

firstly for Montgomery Saturn from<br />

Roberts & Jones in Welshpool. This<br />

impressive 18-month-old is out of<br />

Montgomery Marged, a daughter of<br />

Balmyle Harlequin, and he was sired<br />

by former Carlisle Supreme Champion<br />

Gretnahouse Jugular. Winning the bid<br />

for Saturn was R Jones & Son, who will<br />

be taking him home to Brecon, Powys.<br />

G M Jones of Bala, Gwynedd. Simon<br />

was sired by Caylers Hustler, who was<br />

purchased for 12,000gns at the Blelack<br />

herd dispersal in 2016. His dam Esgob<br />

Nesta goes back to the 26,000gns<br />

Anside Excalibur. The successful bidder<br />

for this young bull was R Williams,<br />

based in Pwllheli, Gwynedd.<br />

Two bulls managed to reach the next<br />

highest price of 6,500gns – the first<br />

of these was another from Roberts<br />

& Jones: Montgomery Strong. Like<br />

Saturn, Strong was also sired by<br />

Gretnahouse Jugular and is out of<br />

another Balmyle Harlequin daughter:<br />

Montgomery Mair. H J Middleton won<br />

the bid for this 18-month-old, and he<br />

will be joining them on their holding in<br />

Bucknell, Shropshire.<br />

The day’s Reserve Overall Champion<br />

Hendy Striker also sold for 6,500gns.<br />

This 18-month-old was bred by J A W<br />

Rees of the Hendy herd in Powys, and<br />

he was sired by the Irish-born Lisnagre<br />

Nero. Striker’s dam is Hendy Jolene,<br />

a daughter of Sandelford Gucci. This<br />

A total of three bulls sold for the next<br />

highest price of 6,000gns, the first<br />

being 18-month-old Castellmawr<br />

Star from A & M Williams of Pwllheli,<br />

Gwynedd. Star is out of Castellmawr<br />

Meg, a daughter of the Irish-born<br />

Goldstar Gentleman, and he was<br />

sired by Caylers Olympus. Star will<br />

be heading over to his new home in<br />

Knighton, Powys, courtesy of winning<br />

bidder A J & J A Powell.<br />

Also selling for 6,000gns was the day’s<br />

Overall Champion Esgob Star – another<br />

from G M Jones’ Esgob herd. A brother<br />

to Simon, Star was also sired by Caylers<br />

Hustler, while his dam Esgob Maddie<br />

is a daughter of the renowned Blelack<br />

Digger. This impressive 18-month-old<br />

was purchased by G Parry of Holyhead,<br />

Anglesey.<br />

The final bull to secure a 6,000gns price<br />

was Montgomery Sphinx from Roberts<br />

& Jones. Like his brothers, Sphinx was<br />

also sired by Gretnahouse Jugular. His<br />

dam Montgomery Hindle is a daughter<br />

of the 30,000gns Dingle Hofmeister.<br />

Winning the bid for this young<br />

16-month-old was J D & M R Buckley,<br />

who are based locally in Welshpool,<br />

Powys.<br />

Finally, two young bulls sold for<br />

the next top price of 5,500gns. The<br />

first of these to sell was 15-monthold<br />

Waldencourt Sunnyboy from<br />

Waldencourt Charolais’ herd in<br />

Newent, Gloucestershire. This young<br />

lad goes back to Blelack Digger via<br />

his dam Waldencourt Jessie, and he<br />

was sired by the 14,000gns Westcarse<br />

Houdini. Sunnyboy will be making<br />

the journey over to Shrewsbury,<br />

Shropshire, under the care of<br />

successful bidder D P & M A Jones.<br />

Also selling for 5,500gns was Maerdy<br />

Sobin, a 15-month-old bull from<br />

D E Evans. Sobin was sired by the<br />

French-born Maerdy Offenback, and<br />

his dam Maerdy Owl is a daughter of<br />

the 10,000gns Blelack Fabulous. This<br />

strapping young bull is sure to go on to<br />

perform well for his new owners D G &<br />

M Owen of Llandrindod Wells, Powys.<br />

Charolais Sale Highlights 2022<br />

Spring Bull Sales<br />

Carlisle (White Gold) – 20 <strong>January</strong><br />

The first White Gold sale of elite females was a resounding success. 25 heifers (both served and maiden) sold to an average of<br />

£4779.60, with an 81% clearance rate. The top price was 18,000gns for 21-month-old Tweeddale Rosemary.<br />

Stirling – 21/22 February<br />

105 bulls sold to an average of £8317, up by £1196 on the previous year, with an 89% clearance rate. Harestone Ronaldinho was the<br />

top seller of the day, reaching the top price of 24,000gns. This sale marked a phenomenal new centre and breed record, smashing<br />

the previous records set at Stirling in October 2021.<br />

Aberdeen – 2 March<br />

8 bulls sold for an average price of £6602, an increase of £1601 over last year. The highest price was 8,500gns, and was secured by<br />

class winner Aultmore Reputation.<br />

Clogher – 4 March15 bulls sold, reaching an average price of £4501 and a 60% clearance rate. The top price of 9,200gns was reached<br />

by Reserve Intermediate Champion Killadeas Raymond.<br />

Exeter – 22 April<br />

7 bulls sold to an average of £4297.50, up £1077.50 on the previous year. Reaching the top price of 6,000gns was Penhargard<br />

Rhubarb.<br />

Swatragh – 29 April<br />

30 bulls sold for an average price of £4163 (up by £623 on 2021), with a clearance rate of 75%. Glencoe Ragnarok sold for the<br />

highest price of the day, at 9,600gns.<br />

Welshpool – 30 April<br />

39 bulls were sold, with an average price of £5670 – an incredible £1251 increase on the previous year – and a phenomenal 100%<br />

clearance. The top-priced bull was Teme Skyfall, who secured a final price of 9,000gns.<br />

Stirling – 1/2 May<br />

30 bulls were sold, reaching an average price of £5845, up £230 on last year’s May sale, and with an 88% clearance. Glenericht<br />

Robert was the top priced bull of the day, at 14,000gns.<br />

Carlisle – 13/14 May<br />

62 bulls sold with an average price of £6487.98 and a clearance rate of 81%. Additionally, 5 heifers also sold, to an average of £1743.<br />

The highest priced bull was Elgin Redrum, who sold for 18,000gns.<br />

Autumn Bull Sales<br />

Stirling – 17/18 October<br />

84 bulls were sold, with an 82% clearance and an average price of £7467.50. 13 females were also sold to an average of £3925.38<br />

and a clearance of 100%. The sale was followed by the dispersals of the Lochend and Ravensworth herds, who reached top prices of<br />

21,000gns for cow-and-calf Lochend Lightning and Lochend Thunder, and 8,500gns for Ravensworth Nicole, respectively.<br />

Swatragh – 4 November<br />

33 bulls sold to an average price of £4239.77, with a 63% clearance. 9 females also sold, averaging at £4386.67. Proceedings closed<br />

with a draft sale from J Smyth’s Bessiebell herd, which reached a top price of 10,400gns for Bessiebell Tilly. The highest bull price, at<br />

7,200gns, was secured by Supreme Champion Drumconnis Santiago. Battleford Snowball was the highest-priced non-draft female,<br />

selling for 6,700gns.<br />

Welshpool – 10 November<br />

41 bulls sold with an average price of £4582.87, with a clearance rate of 76%. The top price of the day was 8,000gns, and was<br />

secured by Maerdy Sermon.<br />

After having received feedback from many members the Council have reviewed the upset price of bulls at society<br />

sales, as such all society sales from <strong>2023</strong> will have an upset price of 3000gns for bulls.<br />

N.B. club sales are permitted to set their own upset price.<br />

Charolais Youth trip to Moulins<br />

Myself, Maddie Clarke and Andrew Adam were lucky enough<br />

to have very kindly been given the opportunity from the<br />

Society, to travel across to France to go and see French<br />

Charolais at their finest, at one of the most highly regarded<br />

shows of the year, Moulins.<br />

The standard of Charolais cattle was exceptional, and it was<br />

quite a sight walking through approximately 400 Charolais<br />

calves in one shed! Judging started at 8am and classes<br />

regularly exceeded 20 in a class. It was great to see such a<br />

huge variety of bloodlines brought forward in the forms of the<br />

show calves and cattle, giving us the opportunity to really see<br />

what clicks in France, and the stamp of animal that they are<br />

looking for.<br />

The afternoon consisted of overall championships where cattle<br />

that had successfully been winning throughout the year at<br />

various shows were bought head to head for overall winners.<br />

One of the most memorable classes from the afternoon was<br />

the senior stock bull class, where there was around 25 bulls<br />

in the ring and I would be surprised if there was a bull under<br />

1200 kilos in the ring!<br />

I would like to thank the Charolais Society for giving us this<br />

amazing opportunity, Allen and Fiona for their worldly wisdom<br />

in navigating through Paris (!), the rest of the UK Charolais<br />

breeders for their great company and the French breeders for<br />

being so welcoming and looking after us.<br />

Annabelle Howells<br />

Andrew and I were fortunate enough to win a trip to the<br />

Charolais Championship Finals in Moulins, back in early<br />

December, after myself placing first at the National Youth<br />

Stock Judging Finals and Andrew coming second. We also won<br />

the pairs competition that day too.<br />

On the first day of our trip traveling to France, we met up with<br />

fellow Charolais breeders from the UK also joining us on our<br />

trip to Moulins. After a flight, and several trains we arrived in<br />

Moulins and decided we would nip into the show for a nosey<br />

around, the evening before the show started. As soon as we<br />

walked in the shed, both Andrew and I were amazed at how<br />

many calves were in front of us and how they all looked like<br />

peas in a pod. I would take a guess at saying there could have<br />

been at least over 400 Charolais calves all in the first shed we<br />

walked in. After a while of scouting about getting excited for<br />

the show in the morning we found ourselves in a Steakhouse<br />

where we had the best Charolais steak and lots of red wine!!<br />

An early start for us on show day with judging starting at<br />

8:00 am. Andrew and I headed out to the carpark where the<br />

judging of the calves began. There were about 8 classes going<br />

at the one time with roughly 15-20 calves in each class. It<br />

was an eye opener and nothing like we have ever witnessed<br />

before. With about two people on each calf, two judges in the<br />

ring and plenty of on lookers, there were more folk in the ring<br />

than cows. A crazy sight but an incredible show of cattle.<br />

We were treated to an amazing three course lunch, courtesy<br />

of the French Charolais Society and then spent the rest of the<br />

afternoon watching the championships and group classes.<br />

The highlight of the trip would be seeing the class of stock<br />

bulls judged. There would be about 16 older stock bulls all in<br />

the one class, with the heaviest weighing around 1800kg!! It<br />

was some sight to see. We then got to mix with some of the<br />

breeders and enjoyed several drinks at the show through out<br />

the evening.<br />

On behalf on Andrew and myself, we would just like to thank<br />

the Charolais Society for giving us this incredible opportunity<br />

and thanks must go to Allen & Fiona, Ben Harman, Gareth &<br />

Sioned for taking us under their wing and keeping us right on<br />

the trip. If it wasn’t for them we would have found ourselves<br />

eating calves testicles!<br />

Obituary Caldwell McAskie<br />

It is with great sadness that we received news of Caldwell’s passing on 21 December, one of<br />

this country’s true gentlemen. Caldwell was among the pioneers in the early days of Charolais<br />

in Northern Ireland with his Mountjoy herd, importing five heifers from France in 1973. He<br />

remained a lifelong Charolais enthusiast. With a keen eye for stock and an enthusiastic nature, he<br />

was a successful farmer and Charolais breeder winning numerous accolades over the years. His<br />

knowledge of the breed was appreciated at the many shows he judged throughout Ireland.<br />

As a former chairman he maintained a great interest in the ongoings of the Charolais Club and the<br />

Society until quite recently. Caldwell loved meeting people and was very helpful in giving advice<br />

and encouragement to young breeders. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and we<br />

pass our condolences to wife Lila, children Robert, Desmond, Bill, Jayne, and grandchildren.<br />

SALES ENTRY REQUIREMENTS<br />

BVD VACCINATIONS - ALL Charolais cattle forward at BCCS auspices sales are to be vaccinated against BVD<br />

(Bovine Viral Diarrhoea) as per the manufacturers instructions.<br />

For herds which are in a CHeCS approved health scheme and are BVD accredited they do not have to be BVD<br />

blood antigen tested, but must be fully BVD vaccinated.<br />

Stirling Bull Sales<br />

For the herds which are not BVD accredited, then potential sale cattle should be BVD antigen tested negative,<br />

and given the first BVD vaccination on the same day as the blood sample is taken. If the BVD antigen test<br />

is negative, the animals should then be given the second vaccination 3-4 weeks later (if using a double jab<br />

vaccine). BVD antigen testing certificates must accompany the cattle to the sale or they will be rejected from<br />

the sale.<br />

IMPORTANT - Do not vaccinate cattle just prior to the sales as immunity to BVD will<br />

not have built up sufficiently.<br />

Obituary Margaret Atkinson<br />

On leaving school at 16, Margaret<br />

worked in the accounts department<br />

at ICI Harrogate and studied maths<br />

GCE and farm records and accounts<br />

at evening class at Harrogate<br />

College of Further Education.<br />

Margaret continued her studies at<br />

Lindsey Farm Institute at Riseholme<br />

in Lincolnshire, gaining a distinction<br />

in Farm Secretarial Work, typing,<br />

private secretarial work and<br />

shorthand.<br />

Margaret returned to her beloved<br />

Yorkshire and set up her own<br />

business in agricultural accounts<br />

and costings, working for two<br />

titled families as well as farmers<br />

with large pig units. Her business went from strength to strength<br />

driven forward by the determined and forward-thinking lady we<br />

all knew.<br />

Margaret was an active member of Winksley cum Grantley Young<br />

Farmers Club from an early age and it was there that she met<br />

Michael, her husband to be. She was the club secretary and at<br />

one point the district YFC secretary as well.<br />

Margaret was a competitive sports player and played hockey<br />

from the age of 13. Her passion for hockey never faltered,<br />

despite having her two front teeth knocked out whilst playing for<br />

the college. Typical of Margaret she was very competitive and<br />

represented Yorkshire at hockey and woe betide anybody who<br />

fouled her intentionally! She continued to play for Ripon Ladies<br />

into her mid 50s.<br />

Some 5 years after Mike had proposed to Margaret when he<br />

was only 17 and a half, they were married at St Nicholas church,<br />

West Tanfield on the 26th April 1969. They moved to Kirkby<br />

Malzeard where Mike farmed, 12 months later Harvey was born,<br />

so Margaret treated herself to 10 days maternity leave. Two years<br />

later Bradley came along and this time the maternity leave was<br />

reduced to 7 days. After another 2 years Lindsey was born and<br />

the maternity leave was just 2 days, it was probably a weekend!<br />

Several grandchildren arrived later.<br />

It was often said that Margaret burned the candle at both ends.<br />

She really did live life in the fast lane. She worked hard and played<br />

hard, carrying out her farm secretarial business during the day<br />

and playing hockey, tennis and badminton during the evenings<br />

and weekends. Fortunately, her parents lived next door to do the<br />

necessary babysitting. At weekends the boys were shipped off to<br />

scouts, whilst Lindsey went with her dad to the markets to gather<br />

his luck money.<br />

Margaret loved to talk and no matter where she was or who she<br />

was with, was never short of a word or two.<br />

Always wanting to keep busy, Margaret was looking for a new<br />

challenge for her 40th birthday, so one weekend they decided to<br />

visit Billy and Jane Turner’s Brampton Charolais herd and bought<br />

3 young Charolais cows and calves. Two of the cows were used<br />

for embryo transfer and became the nucleus of the Mowbraypark<br />

herd. The herd became very successful breeding some top-quality<br />

animals such as Gigi, who won the Royal Show and was part of<br />

a winning Burke Trophy team; Napoleon was a Perth supreme<br />

champion; Paramount was a successful A I sire. They also bred<br />

the male champion at the last Royal Show and so the list goes on.<br />

The Mowbraypark herd were the first to export Charolais cattle to<br />

Romania, as well as semen to Australia and Zimbabwe.<br />

When Mike and Margaret visited<br />

Brampton on that first visit, they<br />

came into the house for a cup of<br />

tea and Med and I got on with them<br />

like a house on fire and we became<br />

lifelong friends.<br />

Margaret was committed to this<br />

new chapter of her life and she was<br />

appointed secretary of the Yorkshire<br />

region of the British Charolais Cattle<br />

Society and over the years helped<br />

organise numerous functions to<br />

promote the Charolais breed. She<br />

held this position up to the present<br />

time.<br />

Mike and Margaret became very<br />

involved in the global world of Charolais and attended several<br />

overseas congresses, as well as events in the UK. Of particular<br />

note was a trip to Sardinia when British Charolais took on the<br />

French Herd Book at football. Of course, Margaret played and<br />

came out with her old hockey tactics and took out the star player<br />

of the French team by kicking his shins!<br />

Margaret supported several charities and held fund raising<br />

events for Cancer Research, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the<br />

Addington Fund. Consequently, as a result of her tireless charity<br />

work, she was invited to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party<br />

where she met the Queen.<br />

Margaret’s competitive side never faltered and when she retired<br />

from sport, she decided politics would be the next challenge.<br />

She became the secretary of the Kirkby Malzeard and District<br />

Conservative Club, which sparked her initial interest to stand for<br />

a seat on Harrogate Borough Council. She eventually won her<br />

seat, where she served since May 2002, she went on to become a<br />

North Yorkshire County Councillor in 2013. Margaret represented<br />

Harrogate Borough Council on the Yorkshire Agricultural Society<br />

Agriculture Committee. In May of this year Margaret was<br />

appointed to serve as the last ever chair of North Yorkshire<br />

County Council before it is replaced by a new unitary authority<br />

next year.<br />

Margaret, as always, was fully committed to this role and<br />

attended as many civic functions as possible, often being escorted<br />

by Mike or the county chauffeur. One particular highlight was<br />

a recent invitation to meet the Prince and Princess of Wales at<br />

Scarborough.<br />

It was Mike’s preferred choice that she was driven to the various<br />

functions so as to keep the body repair bills to a minimum, as<br />

she tended to drive herself a little too fast on some of the narrow<br />

country lanes.<br />

She was such a high mileage model that it was a regular<br />

occurrence for her to don her boiler suit on a morning and do<br />

some farm jobs before dashing back to the house for a shower,<br />

change of clothes, pick up the chain of office and be whisked<br />

away by the chauffeur to a function.<br />

Margaret was a busy person and as the old saying goes if you<br />

want something done, ask a busy person and Margaret was<br />

always there to help out.<br />

There is no doubt Margaret’s untimely passing has left a hole in<br />

many people’s lives but we should remember her as a positive,<br />

hardworking, generous and caring person who doted on her<br />

family.<br />

What is ILROnline?<br />

ILROnline is a new online service which allows members to interact more conveniently with their herd data. Members<br />

will be able to manage registrations, ownership transfer, BREEDPLAN traits, and disposals, directly on the breed society’s<br />

database. Members can also update their contact details and view their work-orders and invoices through a dedicated<br />

and secure web portal. ILROnline is web-based, meaning it can be accessed anywhere, at any time, from any internetcapable<br />

device.<br />

Comparison to Internet Solutions<br />

ILROnline offers a number of benefits when compared to the current system, Internet Solutions.<br />

Electronic Certificates<br />

During <strong>2023</strong> the Society will be rolling out electronic certificates. These will only be accessible via the new ILROonline<br />

platform which is due to be rolled out very shortly to all our members that use the payment method of Direct Debit.<br />

With the ever-spiralling costs of postage the society has decided that Certificates will be made available via this platform<br />

to print whenever our members need, which will mean they have the most up to date information.<br />

When electronic certificates are introduced, printed certificates will be chargeable at a rate yet to be decided.<br />

Changes to Payment Methods<br />

A natural progression will be that by <strong>January</strong> 2024 the Society will only be accepting direct debit as an exclusive payment<br />

method, allowing every member to access ILROnline. If you currently pay by other methods now is the time to contact<br />

the society to switch to Direct Debit as the clock is ticking.<br />

Changes to DNA<br />

Shortly we will be looking to cease sending out pre-labelled pending bags to members with every registration for similar<br />

reasons. Instead, we will send you a batch of blank labelled bags at the start of the year so that you can take the hair<br />

samples and send them in to society by simply writing your animals tag number and your herd prefix on the bag. The<br />

number of bags will be based on your previous years registrations and further bags can be requested at any time, as<br />

required.<br />

A herd built to last - Jill Hunter - Harbro Beef & Sheep Nutritionist<br />

With another year of rising input costs under the belt, it can<br />

be exceptionally tempting to cut back and only spend on<br />

essentials.<br />

What is ‘essential’?<br />

Many discussions have been had around how best to maintain<br />

and improve herd performance and profitability – after all,<br />

you are running a business. All inputs need to be carefully<br />

scrutinised and their ability to improve efficiency of the herd<br />

justified.<br />

One place we can have an impact on the overall bottom line,<br />

is by having a herd with inbuilt longevity. Cows that get in calf,<br />

calve down every 365 days and live forever should be what<br />

we strive for. In the dairy world, it is readily accepted rearing<br />

heifers for replacements is a significant cost and the ones<br />

which do not get in calf, do not rear a calf or do not make<br />

it to second lactation, are a colossal strain on the business.<br />

Heifers in a suckler herd are no different. Therefore, just as<br />

much emphasis should be placed on rearing heifer calves for<br />

replacements as the cattle being turned out for shows and<br />

sales.<br />

Epigenetics is a simple concept where we can influence<br />

which performance genes are switched on and off in calves,<br />

by the nutrition and environment of the cows and bull just<br />

before bulling and at the point of conception. In reality, we<br />

can influence the lifetime performance of calves, by getting<br />

nutrition and management right around bulling. This is not<br />

overly complex, although requires a careful overview and a<br />

good plan alongside your nutritionist.<br />

When it comes to turning out quality stock, genetics,<br />

management and nutrition are all required. Charolais<br />

cattle stockmen and women are well respected for expert<br />

stockmanship and ability to turn out stock. Couple that with<br />

quality genetics, it just leaves the nutrition. This is where we at<br />

Harbro come in.<br />

The WLS team conduct weekly Monday sales of prime<br />

lambs, prime cattle, cull ewes and cull cows, as well<br />

as seasonal store sheep sales including store lambs,<br />

Johnes and Neospora .... a 21st century<br />

solution to loss of herd genetics.<br />

A diagnosis of Johnes or Neospora in a<br />

cow or heifer can be devastating as it<br />

often means the end of her breeding<br />

career. Tyndale Vets have been boarding<br />

these animals and producing disease free<br />

embryos by IVF for several years with great<br />

success.<br />

In this article we look at practical control measures for these<br />

important diseases and suggest an option for infected animals.<br />

Johnes disease<br />

This is probably the most difficult disease of cattle to control.<br />

Animals are infected many years before they test positive<br />

and indeed can be infectious to other animals whilst still<br />

themselves testing negative.<br />

The cause is a hardy bacterium called Mycobacterium<br />

avium subsp. Paratuberculosis or thankfully MAP for short.<br />

The vast majority of affected animals became infected under<br />

6 months of age. Any test for the disease at this stage will<br />

likely be negative. The bacteria lodge themselves in the small<br />

intestine and take up permanent residence within the cells of<br />

the calf. At this stage the animal is clinically well but at some<br />

time, often years later, the bacteria begin to shed themselves<br />

in the faeces allowing infection of other young animals. The<br />

infected cow will also produce antibodies that will yield a<br />

positive Johnes blood test result. Shedding and becoming<br />

antibody test positive unfortunately do not occur at the same<br />

time meaning that in an infected herd you do not necessarily<br />

know which animals are shedding and which are not. However,<br />

removing antibody positive animals significantly reduces the<br />

amount of MAP in the environment, reducing the likelihood of<br />

new infections.<br />

To make matters worse, the stress of calving and lactation<br />

make progression of the disease to the shedding stage more<br />

likely. Calving also now means that there are multiple disease<br />

susceptible calves around making the whole situation worse.<br />

Many infected dams will infect their own calf and infection<br />

becomes almost a certainty once the dam is antibody positive.<br />

Remember though that this calf will be infected but will<br />

remain antibody negative for several years. Antibody positive<br />

dams will likely be shedding much more than antibody<br />

negative ones and they become a risk to calves other than<br />

their own, especially when calving indoors.<br />

Practical control measures in a suckler herd are more limited<br />

than in dairy herds as the calves will nearly always be running<br />

with their dams and often a bull as well. Several control<br />

schemes are available and a good place to start looking at<br />

these is the CHECS website (www.CHECS.co.uk) which is an<br />

industry led, not for profit organisation for cattle disease<br />

control.<br />

Fundamentally, all schemes work towards the same end<br />

goal. They identify the positive animals, enabling them to be<br />

removed from the portion of the herd with calves present.<br />

Retaining daughters from a positive animal for breeding<br />

purposes simply keeps, and indeed magnifies, the problem<br />

within the herd for future years.<br />

The good news is that infected cows and heifers produce<br />

clean embryos from both conventional and IVF embryo<br />

production processes. Whilst these animals are blood positive<br />

but clinically well, success in embryo production is within the<br />

normal range. Sadly, once an animal is clinically unwell results<br />

are poor.<br />

At Tyndale Vets we have a dedicated shed for blood positive<br />

Johnes animals. Bedding is separated for spreading onto<br />

arable land and contact with clean stock is avoided. These<br />

cows and heifers have been successful in producing disease<br />

free embryos for transfer back to the herd of origin thus<br />

maintaining valuable genetic lines that might otherwise be<br />

lost. We can produce embryos using a variety of bulls to<br />

increase breeding options and this can be an opportunity to<br />

introduce new lines instead.<br />

Neospora disease.<br />

Neospora is the main infectious cause of loss of pregnancy in<br />

cattle, often between 5 and 7 months gestation. Remarkably<br />

it was only discovered as recently as the 1980s. The cause<br />

is a protozoan that is closely related to Toxoplasma, a<br />

similar disease of sheep. Both parasites have 2 hosts in their<br />

lifecycles. In the case of Neospora it has to go from cow to<br />

dog and back again. Cows rarely infect other cows however<br />

dogs can infect other dogs. The only exception to this is via the<br />

placenta where an infected dam will almost inevitably infect<br />

her unborn calf.<br />

Reproductive losses are from reabsorption, abortion, stillbirth<br />

and weak calves depending on the age of the affected foetus.<br />

Many surveys have shown that most herds have at least one<br />

positive animal and in some cases up to half the animals are<br />

affected, although this is a worst case.<br />

There are 2 main routes of infection<br />

1. Infection of the unborn calf via its dam….most<br />

common route of infection for a calf.<br />

2. Cattle eating feed contaminated with infected dog<br />

faeces.…less common route of infection but an<br />

important mechanism for the introduction into the<br />

herd.<br />

Dogs are largely unaffected by the disease, remaining well<br />

even when infected. They become infected through eating<br />

raw meat or other infected material, maybe raw food waste or<br />

cleansings from the calving yard. The infected dog may or may<br />

not be yours. Many farms are crossed by public footpaths used<br />

by dog walkers. The role of foxes is unknown and they may be<br />

involved, no one is sure. The infected dog excretes infectious<br />

oocytes for a period of time after infection until it becomes<br />

immune. It then stops shedding. It is not known how many<br />

times a dog can be infected but it is probably more than once.<br />

Control of Neospora is easier than Johnes and involves only 3<br />

main aspects:<br />

1. Identify affected cows and don’t keep their heifer<br />

calves for breeding. Previous heifer calves from<br />

affected animals are probably affected and they also<br />

should not be used to breed replacements for the<br />

herd. Affected heifers often have some reproductive<br />

problem.<br />

2. Avoid dog faeces contaminating cattle feed.<br />

3. Avoid dogs becoming infected by only feeding cooked<br />

meat and avoiding scavenging of cleansings.<br />

The good news is that cows rarely infect each other, even at<br />

calving, apart from the dam to daughter infection within the<br />

womb. A Neospora positive bull is no risk to the herd.<br />

Again CHECS offers detailed disease control options.<br />

Whilst the control of Neospora is much easier and the results<br />

seen much more quickly than for Johnes, it still remains the<br />

case that it is difficult to justify retaining a positive cow or<br />

heifer for breeding purposes if the heifer calves are intended<br />

to be kept for breeding themselves.<br />

As with Johnes disease, Neospora infected animals produce<br />

clean embryos. Again, Tyndale Vets are able to house these<br />

infected animals and produce disease free embryos to return<br />

to you to maintain and advance your herd genetics.<br />

With Charolais taking top prices at<br />

local markets across the province, it’s<br />

no surprise that places were hotly<br />

contested for the title “NI Charolais<br />

Suckler Herd of the Year”. The<br />

competition attracted significant<br />

entries from commercials breeders<br />

across the province. The Northern<br />

Ireland Charolais Club recognises<br />

the importance of producing quality<br />

beef and sought to promote and<br />

demonstrate the strength of a<br />

Charolais sire on the herd. The club<br />

encouraged entries from breeders who<br />

were focused on the promotion of<br />

the best and most sustainable Suckler<br />

Herds in Northern Ireland. With all<br />

herds producing commercial calves<br />

using a Pedigree Charolais Bull.<br />

A special thanks to our judge, Albert<br />

Connelly, who took on the task of<br />

judging the herds. Albert took into<br />

consideration several factors such as<br />

calving pattern, calving return and<br />

carried out an on-farm assessment<br />

before arriving at his decision.<br />

The Northern Ireland Charolais<br />

Club acknowledged that they are<br />

Year. Our breed looks to be turning a<br />

corner, sales of Charolais bulls seem<br />

to be on the up with feed conversion<br />

rates now more important than ever.<br />

Let’s hope the trend continues to grow<br />

throughout <strong>2023</strong> and we can all enjoy<br />

an increased demand for our stock as<br />

farmers strive for greater efficiency<br />

and turn to Charolais.<br />

Welshpool Nov Sale<br />

A good trade was enjoyed at the<br />

autumn Welshpool Sale.<br />

Sharon and I (Waldencourt) had two<br />

bulls forward. Waldencourt Statesman<br />

a <strong>January</strong> born bull won his class and<br />

sold for 4,200gns.<br />

Our young July bull Waldencourt<br />

Sunnyboy was also placed first in his<br />

class and sold for 5,500gns. Both bulls<br />

were sired by Westcarse Houdini.<br />

The Bostock’s from Roundshill sold<br />

their bull Roundshill Sune for 2,800gns<br />

they also sold Roundshill Sormer a<br />

Female for 2,000gns.<br />

With the sale Ricky and Christine<br />

Butler from the Carrigbeg herd offered<br />

two heifers for sale . The sale of these<br />

two animals will see them retire from<br />

cattle breeding. Carrigbeg Sweetie a<br />

Blelack Digger daughter topped the<br />

female trade and sold for 3,450gns.<br />

at Welshpool in November Ricky and<br />

Christine Butler have retired from<br />

breeding Charolais cattle.<br />

The herd has represented our region in<br />

many shows and sales over the years.<br />

Ricky and Christine hardly missed a<br />

Three Counties show over many years<br />

and enjoyed a lot of success winning<br />

many red rosettes. Anyone who has<br />

Waldencourt Sunnyboy sold for 5,500gns from<br />

Waldencourt Charolais<br />

enjoyed a cold beer at the show over<br />

the years has them to thank.<br />

Their fridge travelled to the show and<br />

back every year without fail. They have<br />

enjoyed a good trade for many bulls at<br />

the Welshpool sales. Carrigbeg bulls<br />

showing great growth that few could<br />

general social events. He was a judge<br />

for the breed and judged at most of the<br />

He also represented this region on the<br />

council.<br />

Jeremy was very knowledgeable about<br />

the breed, and was always happy<br />

to help anyone who had a problem<br />

either with their animals or with an<br />

administrative query.<br />

PROMOTIONAL GOODS<br />

Due to the rebranding of the Charolais logo we are looking to<br />

bring a fresh new look to the promotional goods later this year.<br />

Christmas Dinner<br />

The South Midlands Christmas dinner<br />

was held in early December at the<br />

Royal Oak Much Marcle, Herefordshire.<br />

It was really nice to see twelve<br />

members attending, a nice chance to<br />

catch up with a few people that we<br />

haven’t seen for some time due to<br />

covid. A nice meal and great company.<br />

Three Counties show<br />

The Three Counties will go ahead as<br />

per usual in June. We will as a region<br />

put some effort into the show to look<br />

after our exhibitors as we normally<br />

do. If you are considering showing<br />

your cattle this year please consider<br />

the Three Counties we have a great<br />

showground and great housing and<br />

facilities for the cattle ,we would love<br />

We are now at the end of December<br />

with the Christmas and New Year celebrations<br />

coming to a close. We have<br />

had lots of rain in November, two<br />

weeks of frost and icy conditions including<br />

frozen pipes in December but<br />

look forward to the longer days ahead<br />

in the New Year. We wish everyone<br />

Health and Happiness in <strong>2023</strong>.<br />

AGRI EXPO AT CARLISLE<br />

There was another good turnout for<br />

Agri Expo held at Borderway Mart on<br />

Friday 28th October. We had our usual<br />

stand in conjunction with the Society<br />

and welcomed many visitors to view<br />

the cattle and join us for refreshments.<br />

Our thanks go to those who provided<br />

the cattle, set up the stand, provided<br />

the refreshments and served them,<br />

and anyone who helped in any way.<br />

We were pleased to welcome Allen<br />

the Society and were there to meet<br />

We held an Interbreed Quiz at the<br />

Stockman, Wigton with a Pie, and Pea<br />

Supper on Monday 7 November. Quiz<br />

Master for the night was Peter Vasey<br />

who kept the crowd entertained with<br />

his jokes and tales as well as asking the<br />

questions. The winners were a team<br />

from the Aberdeen Angus Club. Thanks<br />

to those who supported the night and<br />

brought raffle prizes.<br />

AUCTION MART NEWS<br />

Mitchell’s Auction, Cockermouth held<br />

their Christmas Show on Saturday 26th<br />

November. The best animal sired by<br />

a Charolais went to Alan Twentyman<br />

from Osborne Farm, Wigton with his<br />

home bred steer which weighed 681<br />

kgs and made 370p per kg totalling<br />

£2519.70. The best heifer was from<br />

John and Jenna Dixon, Lesson Hall<br />

made 332p and came to £2556.40.<br />

Edlingham Newtown for charity, to<br />

celebrate the family being on the farm<br />

for one hundred years. The proceeds<br />

were donated to the Air Ambulance.<br />

The 50 th AGM of the S&N Charolais<br />

Club was held at UA Stirling on<br />

Saturday Oct 15 2022. Colin Wight<br />

gave a summary of the past year’s<br />

events including the Stirling Bull Sales,<br />

White Gold Sale and the top prices and<br />

averages. He mentioned all the Scottish<br />

& Northern members who had done<br />

well. He also discussed the success<br />

of Scotsheep, the breed winning the<br />

Overall Interbreed Championship at the<br />

Royal Highland Show & the successful<br />

Young Breeders Day at Balthayock,<br />

finishing with the World Convention<br />

which was a top-class event bringing<br />

the breed & it’s members together<br />

the show. Selling at 20,000gns he<br />

was sired by the Drysdale families<br />

successful stock bull, Caylers Oxford.<br />

Superb’s dam is Glenericht Jackie, a<br />

daughter of the 12,000gns Caylers<br />

Gladiator. Taking him home was Lucy<br />

Houston of the Gretnahouse herd.<br />

Saturday 13 November saw the Stars<br />

shine bright at Stars of the Future<br />

in the charolais judging rings. An all<br />

ladies judging day at Stirling saw Louise<br />

Mcarthur, Cretlevane Farm take up the<br />

task of judging the charolais section.<br />

Entries were up on previous years<br />

in the charolais section which was<br />

most encouraging and a jam packed<br />

crowd added to a great atmosphere<br />

on the day. A very well done to all<br />

the exhibitors and we look forward to<br />

seeing your stars again next year !!<br />

Committee Christmas Catch Up<br />

The Cairngorm Hotel, Aviemore saw<br />

the annual Christmas catch up take<br />

place with club committee members<br />

attending for a most sociable and<br />

refreshment filled evening. This year<br />

saw all our members manage to<br />

make it to the correct establishment<br />

in plenty time!! All 22 of us managed<br />

to take over the hotel main foyer<br />

for pre-dinner drinks, followed by a<br />

most enjoyable Christmas meal in the<br />

conservatory and our after-dinner<br />

entertainment was supplied by many in<br />

the company but most memorable was<br />

Jimmy Wilson for providing us all with<br />

some first-class entertainment. The<br />

next day was a long one for many I am<br />

sure but well worth it. I look forward to<br />

seeing you all again in December <strong>2023</strong>,<br />

same time, and same place.<br />

Ruby Wedding Celebrations<br />

In August last year Iain & Rhona<br />

celebrated their Ruby Wedding<br />

Anniversary with an afternoon<br />

celebration at Fintry Rugby Club for<br />

family & close friends. A fantastic<br />

afternoon was had by all, with lots<br />

of memories talked about and many<br />

memories to take away. Then onto<br />

October which saw the dispersal of<br />

their Lochend Herd - a herd to be<br />

very proud of and one which they had<br />

established nearly 30 years ago. The<br />

sale was a tremendous success for<br />

them with a top price of 21,000gns<br />

for the duo of Lochend Lightning and<br />

her calf Lochend Thunder. On behalf<br />

of us all here at Scottish & Northern<br />

we would like to wish Iain & Rhona all<br />

the very best for the next chapter and<br />

we have no doubt there will be lots of<br />

fun to be had with their grandchildren<br />

South East - Naomi Jones<br />

October saw the return of the SECA<br />

Herd Competition. Due to reduced<br />

herds in the area, we decided to<br />

combine the pedigree and commercial<br />

herd competition to the same time to<br />

give the judge more to view. We are<br />

very grateful to Andrew Sellick (from<br />

the South West region) for judging<br />

and his wife, Vickie, for keeping him<br />

company for the journey. The results<br />

(see below) were announced at<br />

another SECA virtual quiz night which<br />

we continue to run regularly. Andrew<br />

joined us and shared his reasons for his<br />

placings. The next quiz is planned for<br />

Thursday 9 th February <strong>2023</strong> @19:30.<br />

Andrew Sellick<br />

It was an honour and pleasure to be invited<br />

to judge the South East Charolais<br />

herd competition, whilst short on numbers<br />

of entries the quality of the cattle<br />

was a credit to all involved. I would<br />

like to thank everyone for their hospitality<br />

and giving up their time to show<br />

us around their herds. It was great to<br />

not only to see the cattle but to get to<br />

know the people behind them.<br />

Without exception every herd had<br />

some very noteworthy cattle and unfortunately<br />

not all of them can win<br />

their class.<br />

Thrunton Orkney<br />

We started our tour of the South East<br />

with a visit to the Chesham & Silver<br />

herds of the Harman Family. Having<br />

recently sold a good number of cattle<br />

the herd was not “complete” however<br />

there were some tremendous cows<br />

still there and it was here that I found<br />

the heifer calf Silver Tonia that stuck in<br />

the memory when I placed her as best<br />

2022 heifer calf. It was also good to see<br />

stock bull Balthayock Muskateer and<br />

the stamp he has left in cattle for the<br />

Harman’s as well as the cattle we saw<br />

the next day at the Chameran herd.<br />

Vexour Lemon<br />

A quick dash around North West London<br />

(as quick as you can on the m25)<br />

took us to the Waterman Herd of the<br />

Jones and family. The lasting memory<br />

from the visit being some eye-catching<br />

young heifers coming through showing<br />

the cows are working well. The standout<br />

was the appropriately named Waterman<br />

Sparkle.<br />

Next stop, the highly impressive set up<br />

at Vexour and thanks must go to Martin<br />

for taking the time to show us around<br />

in the middle of calving not only with<br />

the Charolais but the Angus and Herefords<br />

as well and Jan for covering for<br />

him whilst he did. By far the largest<br />

herd of our trip the cattle were consistent<br />

and performing well with some<br />

outstanding cattle amongst them. It<br />

was also good to see the Charolais<br />

influence across the commercial cattle<br />

Our final stop, Highfields Park Farm<br />

and the Chameran Herd. A recently<br />

formed herd compared to some it was<br />

good to meet John and Sheri Hughes.<br />

A strong herd throughout with some<br />

superb cows, the real stand out cow for<br />

me was Edenhurst Jingle with a really<br />

smart heifer calf at foot and arguably<br />

the pick of the yearling heifers was<br />

her calf from 2021. I found my pick<br />

of the 2022 bull calves in the form of<br />

Charmeran Titan. The final paddock<br />

John and Sheri took us to was to see 5<br />

cracking yearling heifers mostly by the<br />

aforementioned Balthayock Muskateer.<br />

Finally, I would like to thank the South<br />

East Charolais Club for inviting me<br />

judge the herd competition and for<br />

allowing us to gate crash the club quiz<br />

night.<br />

1 st July 2018. (Information only calves do not count)<br />

Myostatin variants tested are Q204X & F94L. The results will be published on the certificate, the Charolais website<br />

and sale catalogues. Polled DNA results will also be published in the same way.<br />

We encourage all members to submit pending samples for all calves they register. Further details regarding DNA<br />

Registration Checks<br />

1 Check that the year letter, tag number and names are correct YEAR LETTER FOR <strong>2023</strong> IS U;<br />

2 Different names are used;<br />

3 The birth registration forms are signed;<br />

4 A I dates, and service letters are included if a registered bull owned by another member has been used;<br />

5 Check that the service sire has been DNA-genotyped;<br />

6 Check all boxes are completed accurately and the correct fees accompany the forms;<br />

7 N.B Tattooing of Charolais calves is no longer compulsory but optional for breeders;<br />

DNA PARENTAGE CHECKING<br />

All animals sold privately to pedigree herds must be tested and at least sire verified before they are transferred. This will<br />

be at the vendors cost unless, at the discretion of the society, the animal has been purchased from a non member, a membership<br />

which has ceased or prior to this rule being implemented on 01/03/2020, in which case the cost will default to the purchaser.<br />

All animals entered into a Society sale must be at least sire verified.<br />

All animals’ samples must be either already being processed by the lab or have their DNA profile already completed at the time that<br />

they are entered into a Society sale.<br />

Furthermore, if the DNA profile, parentage verification and myostatin tests are not complete prior to the sale catalogue going to<br />

print (usually approximately three weeks before the sale) then the animal will not be permitted to attend<br />

Having a pending sample stored at the Society office, will not count as the sample being processed at the lab, therefore it is the<br />

responsibility of the member to check that the animal’s sample has been sent to the lab prior to entering the animal into a Society<br />

sale.<br />

All animals will have its parentage verification status displayed in the sale catalogue as either PV, SV or DV. In addition the parentage<br />

verification status will also be displayed on pen cards.<br />

Please note there is a saving of £5.00 + VAT on DNA testing for submitting pending hair samples for animals under 10 months of<br />

age.<br />

F.O.T Rules and Regulations for Fertilised Ovum<br />

Transplant Operations<br />

Main Book F.O.T Females<br />

1. The donor female must be registered with the Society and be DNA – Genotyped.<br />

2. The sire must be registered with the Society and be DNA – Genotyped.<br />

3. All calves must be registered within 27 days of birth.<br />

4. All embryo calves (including imported or transferred embryos) will be parentage verified, at the cost of the member.<br />

5. The Society reserves the right to make on farm inspections.<br />

6. Members have the facility to withdraw any birth registered fertilised ovum transplant animal before 12 months of age (only<br />

if still in the ownership of the breeder registering the calf) for a 90% registration refund. Fee credits will only be made when<br />

the Pedigree Certificate is returned to the Society Office.<br />

D.I.Y Embryo Transplant<br />

For any calves born as a result of ‘do-it-yourself embryo transplant, the flushing details should be forwarded to the Society office<br />

within 30 days of flushing or implanting a cow and when the relevant calves are born they are to be registered within seven days of<br />

birth. Inspections of the relevant calves may or may not be carried out. If, however, registrations are received after the seven-day<br />

period, then an inspection will be carried out at the breeder’s expense.<br />

General<br />

a) Embryos may be transferred to members along with the necessary documentation, which is available on request from the<br />

Society office.<br />

b) Fertilised embryos can be exported providing the statutory requirements of the exporting and importing country and Herd<br />

Book are met.<br />

c) Export certificates are available at a price of £10 per embryo.<br />

Breed Information<br />

Charolais is the leading terminal beef sire noted for its fast growth and excellent conformation. Charolais cattle are creamy white<br />

through to wheaten in colour. Bulls are noted for muscling, with excellent loins, good hindquarters and deep second thigh, while<br />

females are less heavily muscled and have well developed udders. Charolais stand on four strong feet and legs and should be alert.<br />

Charolais Males<br />

• The Charolais bull should be a well-muscled animal on good strong feet and legs to carry the heavy weights associated<br />

with the breed.<br />

• The head should have a wide muzzle with a strong jaw placement.<br />

• The eyes should be set reasonably wide apart.<br />

• The ears should be big.<br />

• The head should be sat proud on a strong muscular neck.<br />

• The back should be long and level without dips, particularly behind the shoulder.<br />

• There should be a good heart room and a minimum amount of brisket in the forequarter.<br />

• The tail-setting should be set comfortably into good wide plates over the hindquarters of the bull.<br />

• The hindquarters should also have a good depth of second thigh and should be well rounded.<br />

• There can be two extreme types of Charolais which should be discouraged. One type would be the tall, flat sided bull<br />

which has a slack back and a poor hindquarter. This type has no place in modern day beef production (and indeed<br />

never has). The second would be the double-muscled heavy shouldered bull which invariably has associated fertility and<br />

calving problems.<br />

Charolais Females<br />

• The females should have a feminine appearance and should not be heavily muscled and masculine in appearance as this<br />

sort tends to be either poor or irregular breeders.<br />

• The head should be wide muzzled with a longer rather than boxy type appearance. Like the bulls, the head should be<br />

alert.<br />

• The back should be long and level with a good spring of rig and a minimum of brisket in the forequarter.<br />

• The tail setting should not be dropped and preferably should be slightly raised as this is alleged to be associated with<br />

easier calving.<br />

• The legs should be of strong flat bone on good sound feet.<br />

• In the case of cows, the udder should be of good capacity with four well-formed teats for suckled calf production.<br />

• The colour of Charolais cattle is generally creamy white through to a light tan colour. Broken coloured cattle are not to be<br />

encouraged<br />

For herds which are in a CHeCS approved health scheme and are BVD accredited they do not have to be BVD blood antigen<br />

tested, but must be fully BVD vaccinated.<br />

For the herds which are not BVD accredited, then potential sale cattle should be BVD antigen tested negative, and<br />

given the first BVD vaccination on the same day as the blood sample is taken. If the BVD antigen test is negative, the<br />

animals should then be given the second vaccination 3-4 weeks later (if using a double jab vaccine). BVD antigen testing<br />

certificates must accompany the cattle to the sale or they will be rejected from the sale.<br />

IMPORTANT - Do not vaccinate cattle just prior to the sales as immunity to BVD will not have built up sufficiently.<br />

Pre-Sale Checks<br />

To avoid the disappointment of having cattle rejected at the pre-sale inspections, members should carry out<br />

the following checks before consigning Charolais cattle to the Sales.<br />

1. As from 1/1/2020 All Charolais animals sold through<br />

BCCS auspices sales must be DNA tested, sire verified<br />

and myostatin tested prior to sale. DNA bags are<br />

available from the Society office, and all cattle are to be<br />

BVD vaccinated.<br />

2.Check the I.D and documentation is correct.<br />

3.Check the dentition is corrrect and the incisor teeth are<br />

biting on the upper pad.<br />

4.In the case of bulls, check testicles are firm and even<br />

sized and comply with the following minimum scrotal<br />

circumferences:-<br />

13-18 months Minimum 34cm<br />

18-24 months Minimum 36cm<br />

>24 months Minimum 38cm<br />

5.Check the animals are free from warts (pay particular<br />

attention to the sheath and scrotal area) ringworm,<br />

mange and other infectious or contagious diseases.<br />

6.Check the animal’s feet and legs are sound and the<br />

general locomotion is satisfactory.<br />

7.*All bulls must be nose rung and halter-led and be 13<br />

months or over on the day of the sale.<br />

8.Check the animals are of good conformation and in<br />

good condition and meet the minimum weight for age<br />

standard as per the charts.<br />

The minimum selling age is 14 months on the day of the<br />

sale.<br />

As from 1 <strong>January</strong> 2017 all Charolais vendors must be<br />

members of the CHeCS approved Health Scheme to<br />

enter the Stirling Sales.<br />

Please note the Stirling February and October sales are<br />

exclusive to ABRI Breedplan recorded Charolais bulls<br />

which must (as a minimum requirement) be<br />

recorded for birth weight, 200 day wt, 400<br />

day wt and be independently ultra sound<br />

scanned and have had a scrotal circumference<br />

In accordance with the Articles of Association, the following Council Members retire having served their elected<br />

appointment to the Council of Management.<br />

Messrs Mr M A Milne (Scotland) and Mr R A Owen (National) are eligible for re-election in <strong>2023</strong>.<br />

Messrs Mr D Barker (Southern England) and Mr D Thornley (Northern England) have served two terms of three years<br />

and are therefore not eligible for re-election in <strong>2023</strong>.<br />

Attached to this Notice you will find a nomination form for replacement nominees for the vacancies available which must<br />

be correctly completed and returned to the Society Office NOT LATER THAN FRIDAY 31 MARCH <strong>2023</strong>. In the event of more<br />

than one nominee per vacancy a postal vote, respective to the individual Region/National vacancy will be held.<br />

A Council appointment is for a term of three years and is open to any fully paid-up Annual or Life Member of the Society.<br />

Proposers, seconders and nominees are confined to the region in which their address is registered with the Society. A<br />

member shall not be eligible to hold office as a member of Council if that member is:<br />

a. A director or the holder of any other office or employment in any other company, society or organisation established<br />

for the promotion of any beef or any dual purpose breed of cattle other than pedigree British Charolais cattle.<br />

b. Not either personally, the owner of pedigree British Charolais cattle, or partner in a partnership firm or a share<br />

director of a company which firm or company is the owner of pedigree British Charolais cattle.<br />

A statutory limitation was introduced in 1984 that after two consecutive terms of three years on Council, a member is not<br />

eligible for re-election for one year.<br />
