Navigator Plt Off Anthony J Mulligan poses atop the nose section of Fortress I AN521, the day after its January 8, 1942, loss. Note the shattered yet intact windscreen panels. Mulligan, together with AN521’s cockpit crew, Flg Off Frank Sturmey and Plt Off Tom Franks, arrived at Nutts Corner on June 6, 1942, where they ‘rejoined’ 220 Sqn at its base. This appears to have been an administrative step since none of the three had served with 220 Sqn’s core unit. Mulligan, his wife and his father were among the twenty-five passengers and crew of six lost when Avro Tudor IV Tiger Star G-AHNP of British South American Airways disappeared between the Azores and Bermuda on January 30, 1948. 6
Brailsford’s logbook for February 1942, indicating the unit was now a detachment of 220 Sqn, Coastal Command. Fairchild 91 HK832 ‘M’ at Fuka on February 14, 1942. Formerly NC16690, the amphibian was purchased <strong>by</strong> the British Air Ambulance Corps, a New York-based charity, and delivered to the Middle East. It served with the Sea Rescue Flight until sinking following a take-off accident near Benghazi on May <strong>17</strong>, 1943. 7
