Stinson A VT-AQV of Tata Sons on the apron at Karachi civil airport in May 1942. To the rear are three B-17Es of the 9 th BS, 7 th BG, Tenth Air Force, USAAF. The radio call numbers on their fins appear to have been painted out, perhaps to disguise the small number of aircraft on strength. Fortress Is AN518 and AN532 were employed as trainers for the B-17E crews following their transfer back to the USAAF that September. Also visible are two Hawker Hurricanes and a Lockheed C-60. 220 Sqn, RAF at Karachi Airport with Fortress I AN532 to the rear. F/Sgt Ken Brailsford is sixth from the right in the second row. Unit commanding officer, Sqn Ldr Archibald McLaren, DFC, is the third airmen to Brailsford’s right. 12
Return of AN518 to Karachi over August 1-2, 1942, totaling two flights followed by a month of inactivity. AN532 following transfer to the Tenth Air Force, USAAF, in India at the end of September 1942. Note the disruptive British upper surfaces camouflage, over-painted individual letter ‘J’ and RAF roundel forward of the fuselage gun window, USAAF insignia painted over the squadron code, and the partially obscured RAF fin flash. As noted in Appendix A, there is confusion over the USAAF serial numbers assigned to AN532 and AN518 following their transfer to the Tenth Air Force. (See book profile page 184). (via Tom Michel) 13
