ARGENTINA<br />
You think Argentina, you think Malbec. It’s the most planted<br />
variety and by far the most popular. I can’t think of many wine<br />
lists that don’t have an Argentinian Malbec these days. It seems<br />
we can’t get enough of those ripe black fruits and smoky finish.<br />
Most of the plantings are from Mendoza in the foothills of the<br />
Andes and some of the very best come from the higher altitude<br />
Uco Valley, a sub-region so new that I once had to trek to a<br />
nursery vineyard on horseback as they hadn’t finished the road<br />
yet. We have Malbec to suit all price ranges and palates but<br />
I’m a big fan of Don David’s Reserve Malbec, from the more<br />
Northern Salta region, where the vineyards are some of the<br />
highest in the world.<br />
Malbec may be the most popular red grape but there’s also<br />
a world of whites to discover with some superb Chardonnay<br />
and Viognier in the range. Also check out Torrontes,<br />
Argentina’s signature white, a wine once described by a<br />
friend as ‘like a flower in a glass’. It’s super aromatic and<br />
simply perfect with spicy food.<br />
