Edna, sadly, did not know the difference. As<br />
time progressed, her company increased its capacity<br />
from a single monthly magazine to five<br />
periodicals, using the same three-person production<br />
staff. The owner was able to take on<br />
more projects because her employees had<br />
learned to work faster. Unable to give raises<br />
after the second year, she gave a lecture instead.<br />
She justified not increasing pay by telling<br />
her staff that they should simply settle for the<br />
increased amount of free time they had. However,<br />
she did not, in fact,<br />
let us have our free time.<br />

week during which time I could free-lance write<br />
for other local publications in order to supplement<br />
my salary, which was less than a beginning<br />
school teacher earns in Utah. And Utah<br />
has a reputation for paying teachers very little in<br />
relation to surrounding states.<br />
