will come together at ASD Marketweek, 

March 10th - March 14th, 2024 in a distinct trade 

show experience for thousands of exhibitors in 

the style and beauty, jewelry, gift, toy, and value 

categories. 

The ASD shows provide a unique environment 

where buyers and sellers come together to do 

business. By having the entire show under one roof 

at the Convention Center it makes it convenient 

for attending buyers to cover more exhibits and 

spend more time with the exhibitors to make their 

purchases. The show continues to evolve and 

improve by separating product categories such as 

gift, toy, fashion and general merchandise making 

it easier than ever for buyers to pinpoint specific 

areas to see the products they are interested in. 

In addition, the show will offer seminars on topics of 

interest to the current retail environment including 

social media, search engine strategies, e-commerce 

and global sales strategies. All seminars will take 

place on site at the Las Vegas Convention Center. 

For over 63 years, ASD Marketweek has been serving 

the unique community of buyers and sellers in the 

wholesale and mass retail arenas. The show will take 

place from March 10th - March 14th, 2024 at the 

Las Vegas Convention Center and is expected to 

draw over 45,000 buyers including large chain 

retail stores, independent retailers, online retailers, 

distributors, boutique franchisers, mall carts and 

kiosks. The show offers the most comprehensive 

selection of general merchandise under one roof 

in the country.

March Show Edition 

WELCOME to March and can you believe 

that we’re almost done with the winter, 

which in general has been much milder 

than most and allowed retailers to benefit 

by seeing more shoppers out and about 

making purchases. 

THE economy has been improving and 

our segment of value-priced merchandise 

has seen good growth which is leading 

towards a positive outlook by year end. I 

do find it curious that with all the talk about 

inflation and cost of living these days, the 

Superbowl tickets last month were selling 

for tens of thousands of dollars. I watched 

many of the fans on TV and they did not 

look like the 1%’ers. I guess people pick and 

choose what they spend their money on. 

WHAT this all illustrates to me is that 

things are improving and we are seeing 

more discretionary spending which is 

crucial to our business’ survival. When 

the rest of the 99% jump in and start 

loosening the purse strings we will truly 

be in great shape. One of the good things 

about a Presidential election year is that 

the incumbent works on cleaning up his 

mess and reducing inflation and costs 

while the challenger offers the promise of 

bright days ahead. Either way we get the 

benefits of their campaigning. 

ONE of the biggest concerns I had over 

the last couple of years has been the lack 

of new merchandise lines in the industry. 

Without being able to excite our shoppers 

with new items it becomes difficult for 

retailers to simply dust off the old goods

and try to make money. We are finally 

seeing more manufacturers investing in 

new lines and this will certainly help us 

all. I mean you can only sell so many Dora 

Explorer or Mickey Mouse items these 

days, right? 

THE trade shows for the first quarter have 

kicked off nicely and it is good to see buyers 

back in the markets meeting new suppliers 

and searching for new goods. This issue 

is dedicated to the ASD Marketplace event 

that we have been media sponsors for over 

the last 42 years. 

THERE was always an excitement about 

going to Vegas for ASD over the years. I 

remember in the early days when the show 

was held at the Riviera and Sands you 

would just walk down the exhibit aisle and 

at the end of the row hit a craps table. Like 

everything else Vegas has changed and 

while I miss the old hotel shows it is much 

more focused having the entire event 

under one roof at the convention center. 

Aside from being more productive it has 

saved me lots of money by not bumping 

into a craps table at the end of the row! 

We welcome to our magazine many oldtimers 

who are joining us for this special 

March show issue. As the only magazine 

servicing independent retailers nationally, 

we have had a great resurgence in our 

business and are thankful for that. I hope 

you enjoy this special show issue and 

encourage you to patronage our advertisers

Dollar General Competing with Grocers 

DISCOUNT retailer Dollar General has surpassed its latest milestone and is now offering fresh 

products options in more than 5,000 if its stores across the country. With this move the chain has more 

individual points of produce distribution than any other mass retailer or grocer in the United States. 

WITH their stores carrying the top 20 items typically sold in grocery stores the company has 

solidified its standing in the market space. In addition, the chain carries produce, fresh fruits and 

vegetables and more. While the company is not considered a grocer, approximately 80% of Dollar 

General stores service communities of 20,000 or fewer people, with many Americans, especially in 

rural areas, relying on the retailer for their basic every day and household essentials. 

IN addition, Dollar General recently invested in a partnership with Shelf Engine, an AI company 

providing retailers with technology to improve perishable food forecasting and ordering. If you have 

been in a dollar store lately you will notice they have come a long way over the last few years 

including price points over the one dollar level. 

Madison Avenue Still Luxury Destination 

THE country’s longest luxury venue continues to attract high end businesses ranging from 

designer shops to hotels, restaurants and galleries. Madison Avenue in New York City continues to 

rebound with almost two dozen new projects on tap for this year, on top of the 32 businesses that 

opened during the last half of last year. This business improvement area extends from East 57th to 

East 86th Streets along Madison Avenue. 

AMONG the projects currently under development are Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, 

Lalique, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Peter Millar, Nobu Hotel and Spa, Sotheby’s, Swarovski, 

Surrey New York, Van Cleef & Arpels and others. 

THE wave of openings and projects in the works demonstrates the resilience of high luxury brands 

investing in larger stores to more fully present their collections. Madison Avenue vacancies declined 

to just over 10 percent, with rents increasing an average of 36.7% since last year. 

Nordstrom Makes Room for Shoes 

DID you know that Nordstrom was originally debuted as a shoe store back in 1901? The iconic 

store is highlighting its heritage by relaunching its “Make Room for Shoes” campaign. The campaign 

will start up with monthly partnerships with some of the industry’s most famous footwear brands. 

The store will feature a curated selection of new styles, exclusive, dedicated visual displays and 

shopping experiences. This year long project will live in all Nordstrom stores and on their online site. 

NORDSTROM has a commitment and passion to shoes that date back more than a century so 

this venture is very natural for the brand. Additional partners will be added every month making this 

a very interactive and exciting experience for shoppers who want to sample these new offerings 

from the iconic brand.

THE WORK ENVIRONMENT 

When the going gets tough and the hours 

get long, people put in extra time and effort 

to help their friends – their co-workers. 

Since the money for regular raises simply will 

not exist in the early years, your employees are 

going to be further motivated to remain in your 

employ if they have a great deal of control over 

their work environment. The biggest factor is 

whom they work with. Light, music or silence, 

work systems, etc. are the other things that 

your employees want to control. Do you insist 

that employees straighten their desks at the 

end of the day? If so, you are taking away some 

of the control that your people seek. The fact is, 

while bosses care about neat desks, customers 

seldom do. If an artistʼs or salespersonʼs desk 

is cluttered during the workday, and that person 

is working at his or her desk, clutter represents 

how they get work done. To insist they do it differently 

may slow them down, or sabotage a 

“system.” Within reasonable limits, allow your 

staff control over their environment. 

How about music versus silence? Everyone 

has an opinion. I cannot work with background 

music, and as a business owner I would not impose 

my taste in entertainment (talk radio) on 

my customers. I consider silence the only professional 

option. I donʼt know how people concentrate 

on work and tune out music. Some say

they do, but I have watched a coworkerʼs 

attention to detail deteriorate 

while she stayed plugged

Retailers who sell records or 

audio-visual equipment have televisions 

and CD players turned 

on all the time. Their employees 

must consider that type of work 

environment satisfactory, or they 

would not be there. But in a professional 

office or service store, 

the work being done and the 

amount of concentration required should dictate 

the degree of silence. 

Consider another thing: silence is never 

complete. Every office has noise generated by 

office equipment and heating/air conditioning 

systems. These sounds cause distraction. Total 

silence can be a problem too. People need little 

breaks from work. And while music may give 

people an excuse not to think about or do work, 

a more productive way exists for people to take 

mental breaks – talk. People will talk to one another 

if the only other sound in the room is silence.

The way that relationships are built – the way 

people communicate their demands and needs 

to one another – is by talking. Yes, you can create 

a paper flow of office memos to keep your 

staff informed. But talk is much better. That personal 

touch by you and between your employees 

will build a better team. 

For example, I spent a summer working as a 

volunteer at a local pioneer history park. Most 

of the volunteers were unpaid. The only sounds 

we heard from the log cabins and adobe homes 

were made by wind blowing through the poplars 

and a howling monkey from the zoo across the 

street (which sounded like a bird). Talking to the 

other volunteers came very naturally and easily.

We had common ground to discuss – the park 

and the visitors – and when there were no visitors, 

we had little else to do except quilt, tat, 

weave, and talk. 

The majority of the volunteers returned the following 

summer. They had built the kind of working 

relationship with one another that every 

small business owner should aspire to. The curator 

of the park and the education coordinator 

had both taken other jobs (dissatisfied with politics 

and budget cuts), but it mattered not. 

Those volunteers worked for one another and 

for a “common cause” – the success of the 

park. That is what you, as a manager, should 

try to build in your company – a staff that will 

work for one another and for a common cause: 

the success of your business, which they have 

been made to feel a part of.

owner should expect is for people to leave your 

employ, especially if you are in the building 

years. Again, your best employees will gravitate 

toward money. If your company does not or 

cannot grow as fast as your employeesʼ personal 

financial expectations, they will move on. 

There is nothing you can do. You can only pay 

what you can afford. So 

be prepared for the inevitable. 

Try not to 

make anyone feel mad 

or guilty. A former employee 

should continue 

to be your customer,

In the best case, your business will grow 

rapidly and you can raise salaries to match ability, 

dedication, and the personal investment

Priorities vary for different people. Beginners 

usually place heavy emphasis on training and 

gaining experience. As we all know, it takes experience 

to get hired. A few rare employers will, 

literally, hire someone off the street and train 

them. My former partner Fred Black bum was 

like that. He trained anyone who expressed an 

interest in the quick-print business. He demanded 

more from his help than he did of himself, 

and we all preferred it when Fred did not 

do his own printing. He trained me. Fred was 

the best boss I ever had. 

While I had some schooling in layout, I had 

never used a typesetting machine before the 

IBM Composer. I had used a similar machine in 

the military, but typestyles, fonts, kerning, and 

leading were foreign words to me. I spent several 

months reading books and memorizing terminology, 

trying to supplement my knowledge, 

because someone had given me a chance and 

taken the time to train me. People who are trying 

to break into a new field put great priority on 

training and experience. My former employer 

hired several people with limited computer experience 

and paid them very little while we 

trained them on the typesetting system and in 

magazine production.

Scientific studies indicate human beings need

Let your people control their own time as long 

as someone is always in the office or store to 

help the customers. Time cards may be necessary 

if you have a lot of employees and pay on 

an hourly basis. But if someone is ten minutes 

late one day (on the time card), be patient and 

watch for the patterns. Does he or she leave 

ten minutes later at the end of the day, or take 

a shorter lunch break the following day? If the 

hours add up to forty you are paying for, and 

your store opens and closes on time, ignore it. 

Fire the people who show up late all the time if 

you have a policy that everyone has to be at 

work for a 9:00 am meeting. But if one person 

has responsibility for opening the doors at 9:00 

am, and you donʼt expect a large crowd at that 

hour, allow as much flexibility as you can. It 

makes sense to let your people come to work 

when there is work for them to do!

night people. I donʼt come to life until 10:00 am. 

Molly, the original art director for Ednaʼs publishing, 

is a morning person. I preferred to work 

late; she early. We put in our “overtime” according 

to our own rhythms. When I first started with 

the company, I punched a clock. I arrived exactly 

at 9:00 am, took a 60 minute lunch, exactly, 

and left promptly at 6:00 pm. During 

deadline week, I often worked later. Edna did 

not pay overtime, but I could take time off for 

each overtime hour I worked. I grew to resent 

the rigidity of my schedule, because I often didnʼt 

have anything to do until noon, when someone 

turned in an article, or I had an interview 

appointment scheduled. I renegotiated with my 

employer, and was able to control my own time, 

which meant sometimes Iʼd arrive at 9:00 am, 

sometimes at 2:00 pm. I would take a two-hour 

lunch or none at all. But my hours and breaks 

were task oriented. We had a product to produce 

by a deadline.

None of the entrepreneurs Iʼve interviewed 

planned it this way. But certainly that has been 

the way things turned out for most. If you are

THE HALES 

Robert Hale was seven when his family opened 

their first store, The Ink Spot, an office supply 

store and printing shop at the time. His brothers 

were five and nine and their sister, born in 

1963, “was raised in the back of the store.” 

Robert says the family works six days a week; 

most days start at 8:00 am and end well past 

9:00 pm when the stores close. “When the first 

business opened,” says Robert, “we (the kids) 

swept floors, dusted, and delivered handbills in

THE CAVANAUGHS 

Marie Cavanaugh did not set out to be a working 

mother; she fell into a professional life because 

of her skills both as a chocolate dipper 

and as a business person. And she 

had the help (and construction skills) 

of her husband George. Their business 

grew out of a hobby and then a 

church fundraising project. When the 

demand grew so large that they spent most of 

their time delivering chocolates to customers in 

cities up to 225 miles from their South Dakota 

farmhouse, they relocated to Marieʼs home 

state of Utah. They picked Bountiful as the ideal 

location because there were no other chocolate 

factories there and, says Marie, “Bountiful is 

beautiful. Ideal for us and our five kids.”

They purchased a building 

from a local utility company 

and converted the front offices 

into a home and the sixtruck 

garage into a factory. 

Their five employee staff grew to seventy-three 

by 1988. Marie carries as many photographs of 

her family as she does of her business. She 

even names her signature chocolates after her 

grandchildren, like “Mindy Mints.” “I was a working 

mother; we learned to work together as a 

family and established a rapport.” Any child who 

expressed an interest in learning to dip chocolate 

was taught. Four grown daughters now 

work in the family business. “Our kids understand 

us because theyʼve been a part of it.” 

says Marie. She talks about several employees 

who have been working for her for 15 years as 

though they, too, are family.

Marie Cavanaughʼs daughter Carla now has 5 

children of her own and manages the familyʼs 

Valley Fair mall kiosk part-time. As Marie says, 

her daughter has found a way to employ all the 

women in her church, part-time, so they can all 

raise their children in the home, while having a 

way to earn money and some time off for a little

THE MIHLBERGERS 

Mike Mihlberger grew up in his fatherʼs business.

was a logical progression of Mikeʼs 

childhood. His father owned All Makes Typewriter, 

where Mike worked for nine years

Why? My theory is that Mike, like Robert and 

Carla, grew up, like their great great-grandparents, 

working and living around their parents 

and other adults. Most children today have only 

other children to consult if they are dissatisfied 

with the information their parents provide – verbally 

or by example. Children are imprisoned in 

a classroom, then encouraged to spend their 

after-school hours engaged in extracurricular 

activities – at school. The few who work, work 

at fast food places, surrounded by more children 

their own age, with the same (mis)conceptions 

about work, money, morals, ethics, etc.

have input from many sources. At age 13, when 

parental advice is generally ignored, these children 

are in daily contact with other adults 

whose opinions or demands cannot be ignored. 

They must learn rules of the workplace; timeless,

cross-generation social skills, how to treat 

customers, how to get along with co-workers, 

etc. Input from parents, co-workers, even customers 

will mold the adult.
