people. Small companies tend to hire a
single specialist. When that expert gives two
weeksʼ notice, it may not give you, the owner,
enough time to find and train his or her replacement.
So every time you buy a new piece of
equipment, make certain you attend the
classes, too. You may have to fill in for a while,
or have at least enough knowledge about what

needs doing to know whom to hire next. Remember,
the people who started with you have
one advantage – they made up their jobs.
The supplier from whom you purchased the
computer trained someone to use it. That “free”
training was for a single period of time, not for
each new employees who comes to work for
you over the years and has to use the machine.
If you donʼt have the capital to pay for retraining
each time, be the one who can do the training.
At the very least, be proficient enough to recognize
someone who will be able to learn more
than you know on the computer, and who will
be able to get the job done as well as, if not better
than, the person he or she replaced. If you
are a retailer, youʼll probably have (or be) a
sales manager to train other salespeople.
