Well, now that it’s already
Augtober now,
all I want to do is put
up my Fall decorations,
and start sweater
weather. I don’t know
about you, but I am so
over this heat.
Can you believe we are
almost already in September? It’s been a busy
month for us at the Rojas household. The kids
started school a couple weeks ago. I can’t believe
I already have a freshman in high school and a
fifth grader. Where has the time gone?
My daughter will be cheering at her first football
game this Friday, and my son just did his first
football jamboree this past weekend. I am so
proud of my kids.
Another important piece of news is, that after six
years of working with Bosco Company, a new

Settlement Practices Act
regulations for all claims
professionals.
Regrettably, our planned
presenter for this year, local attorney and past
MVCA Member Mike Kronlund, with Quinn &
Kronlund suffered the loss of his mother just prior
to the event. We offer our deepest sympathies
and hope to see Mike sometime in the near future.
What did come out of that was our members and
guests filling the room at Dave Wong’s with the
sounds of folks who were all very pleased to see
each other and have an opportunity to converse.
We conducted the business of the association,
starting with going around the room so everyone
could introduce themselves and share just

This Presidents message
comes as we
approach the end of
summer and the beginning
of the next
school year and I write
this with a mixed emotion’s
as it has been
an incredibly summer
personally and professionally with both high
spots and low spots.
From the birth of an amazing granddaughter to
the passing of my mom all in the same week it
allows one a moment to pause and reflect on life.
On the business side our Golf Event which ended
up being a scene from a movie with a fugitive
on the loose and all of us having to evacuate
the course for our collective safety. This in turn
allowed a lot of networking to occur as we had to
wait this out and in the end we ended up having
an amazing day and I personally thank all of our

adventure arose that I could not pass up. I am so
excited to announce that I have accepted a position
at Blusky, Restoration and Contractors. As much as
I loved working for Bosco, and working for Richard
Schaper, I am so ready for this new chapter in life.
I am lucky to be working alongside some amazing
people, including Diane Viodes.
Who’s ready for CCNC? I know I am. I’m honored to
be President again this year, and to working alongside
some fabulous board members. There’s a core group
of us that have been working day and night to make
sure our last year in Tahoe is a memorable one. If

Coming up for EBCA we are very pleased to have
our own Vice President, John Ehlert, of JR Structural,
as our featured presenter at the October 11,

luncheon meeting will be back at The Old Spaghetti

a bit about what they do. We included a review of the June golf
tournament, along with announcements for the upcoming claims
conference, as well as our September MVCA Bowling tournament,
and a talked about doing more with our sister organizations. We held
our 50/50 raffle and door prize drawings, and then just let people chat.
We had one attendee who said he specifically came for the recertification.
He wound up winning the 50/50 and a door prize, and
had such a great time getting to know the members better that he
said rather joyously how glad he was that he came. Many of our
claims professional members had actually just completed a course
with their company by Zoom. I want to acknowledge and thank our
members for their flexibility, their involvement, and their humanness.
We do hope to bring back the recertification at some point, and we
wish Mr. Kronlund and his family all the best.
We are looking forward to participating in the annual Claims
Conference of Northern California, and applaud the gallant efforts
of all those involved in organizing this event. This will be the final
year of the CCNC contract at the Palisades facility in Tahoe. The
planning committee members, including reps from MVCA, has already
renewed a relationship with the Hyatt Regency in Sacramento
for next year’s event.
September 21 marks the date for the fourth annual MVCA Bowling
Tournament. Gather up your teams and let’s go!

Going forward you will notice that this is the
second newsletter that has information about all
three associations in our region. This is due to
the combined and collective effort of all three
Presidents getting together and agreeing that
this is the best approach for the growth and
increased visibility for all of our Associations
letting all our members see what is going on
in our area and culminates with the annual
combined Claims Conference of Northern
California (CCNC).
Lastly, as the old saying goes there are two
things that are certain in life “death and taxes” I
would ask that everyone who is taking time out
of their day to read my message to either visit,
pick up the phone and text or call someone that
love as life is precious and we get an opportunity
to live every day and we only die once. From
one of my favorite songs If today was your last
day the lyric goes “Each day’s a gift and not a
given right”. So I ask all of you what are you

Fe Ciurar Announces move
to CSAA

Felicia Ciurar,

a Senior Claims
Examiner.
Ms. Ciurar has officially
joined CSAA (a AAA insurer) as a
Senior Field Adjuster, covering the greater
Sacramento region.
As a Senior Claims Examiner, Fe is able to
utilize her experience as a Field Inspector
and Property Claims professional handling
all perils.
She joined the Sacramento Claims Association
in 2021 and the board in 2022 while
with The Hartford. She serves on the SCA
Education and Social Committees, and is
a representative for the SCA to the Claims
Conference of Northern California’s planning
committee.

SCA Looks to Fill Out Year with blend
of Education & Social Activities
Coming out of a restful Summer, the Sacramento
Claims Association has plans to
fill out the balance of the year in strong
fashion. First up is the SCA Family Night
at the Rivercats Friday, September 15. A
mostly annual event, this event has been
a strong draw in past years. Coming together to cheer on
the local AAA team for the Giants in September rather than
the standard heat of July in the past, the planning committee
set about getting a spot for the group not so directly
in the late afternoon sun. This one promises to be a fun
family adventure.
Thursday, October 12 is the next scheduled Educational
Luncheon meeting, scheduled to be held back at LionsGate
Conference Center. Details are forthcoming, so stay tuned.
Come November 9, the SCA is pleased to present the 3rd
annual Cornhole Tournament! This popular event is slated
to return to Elk Grove Park in the mid-afternoon. Gather up
your partners and join us for a fun time.
We will round out the year with our annual Cathrin Nevin
Memorial Holiday Charitable Giving Luncheon festivities.
Plans are to return to The Firehouse in Old Sac.
All are invited to join in. Our association thrives with your

LOS ANGELES, CA — As Tropical
Storm Hilary moved out of California,
and the state begins the recovery
process, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo
Lara advised everyone August
21, 2023 to stay safe and take action
necessary to prevent their property
from further damage.
“It is crucial Californians understand
whether their property insurance
covers any damage from wind, rain
and flooding caused by the tropical
storm,” he stated in a release.
The CDI states that if a consumer’s
or business’ property is damaged due
to the storm, they should file a claim
with their insurance company. For
those unsure of whether their damage
is covered, The Commissioner’s
offices directs people to contact their
insurance company or agent or broker.

CDI Commissioner Lara provides Insurance Information for those
affected by Tropical Storm Hilary
“This once in a lifetime storm brought
rainfall and wind damage, so it is
crucial consumers understand their insurance
coverage and know they have
options and support,” said Commissioner
Lara. “I have alerted insurance
companies to follow California law
requiring they cover any mudslide,
debris flow, or other damage that is
caused by our recent wildfires so that
people can recover quickly.”
Most homeowners’ and commercial
insurance policies include wind and
storm damage. Damage caused from
fallen trees also is generally covered
under all standard homeowner
policies.
Many people may not be aware
that homeowners’ and commercial
insurance policies typically exclude
flood, mudslide, debris flow, and other
similar disasters — unless they are
directly or indirectly caused by a recent
wildfire or another peril covered
by the applicable insurance policy.
The Department of Insurance has
posted a fact sheet for consumers to
answer questions about what their
policies cover. The Department of
Insurance assures folks they are here
to help. Consumers should contact the
Department at 800-927-4357 or online
at insurance.ca.gov for assistance
on what may or may not be covered
by their policies.
Commissioner Lara issued a formal
Notice to insurance companies earlier
this year reminding them of their
legal duty to cover damage from any
future mudslide or similar disaster
that is caused by recent wildfires that
weakened hillsides.
$50.5 Million in Grants Awarded Statewide to Assist
Law Enforcement in Efforts to Fight Fraud
SACRAMENTO, CA — Insurance Commissioner
Ricardo Lara announced
June 29, 2023 that he has awarded
$50,545,239 in grants to 34 district
attorney offices representing 44 counties
in California to combat insurance
fraud. In an official release, the CDI
states that, under Commissioner Lara’s
leadership, these grants, which are
funded through annual employer assessments,
support law enforcement
efforts in investigating and prosecuting
fraud and increase outreach to California
communities.
Commissioner Lara also awarded an
additional $400,000 in grants to protect
consumers, the majority of whom are
seniors, from abuse involving the sale
of individual life and annuity products
as part of the Life and Annuity Consumer
Protection Program.
“Insurance fraud continues to be a drain
on our economy. Partnership between
my Department’s investigators and
local law enforcement is crucial in
fighting fraud and educating the public,”
said Commissioner Lara. “These
annual grants continue to show my Department’s
long-standing commitment
to investigating and working with our
law enforcement partners to combat
fraud and protect consumers, businesses,
and the insurance marketplace.”
Since Commissioner Lara took office in
2019, the Department has particularly
focused these grants on increasing outreach
throughout the state, especially
to the state’s diverse and underserved
communities, the statement reads.
These grants also fund essential outreach
programs for individual district
attorney offices to deter fraud and
increase consumer awareness.
Consumers are sometimes unaware of
their rights or are reluctant to exercise
them. Outreach programs will educate
them of those rights and of best anti-fraud
practices to protect themselves
and their loved ones. The CDI website
offers information on scams consumers
and business may be susceptible to.
The other focus for these grants is combating
workers’ compensation fraud.
A large part of these grants will go to
the investigation and prosecution of
medical provider fraud in the workers’

may cover their vehicle if it is damaged
in a flood if they have purchased
comprehensive coverage. While only
liability coverage is required by law,
they should consider comprehensive
coverage to protect their vehicle in
case of storm damage.
The California FAIR Plan, the state’s
insurer of last resort, currently does
not cover any storm-related damage
unless a consumer has purchased a
supplemental “difference in conditions”
(DIC) policy from another
insurance company.
With any storm damage, you should
call your insurance company to report
it and take pictures and keep records
of all clean up and repair costs.

who are unwittingly ensnared
in schemes to bill for unnecessary or
profit motivated medical treatment. A
recent example of this type of fraud
sited in the release was the sentencing
of former doctor, Julien Omidi, to 84
months in federal prison after a joint
investigation with the Department and
law enforcement partners found that
he defrauded insurance companies by
fraudulently submitting nearly $120
million in claims.
Department investigators also work
with law enforcement partners to target
employer premium fraud, employer defrauding
employee fraud, insider fraud,
claimant fraud, uninsured employers
operating within the underground
economy, and exploitation of workers.
These investigations are said to level
the playing field for honest businesses
and are intended to discourage future
fraudulent activity, and protect all
Californians.
A recent sited example of this was the
plea agreement reached with Golden
Foods Inc. where the company admitted
to a litany of labor violations, which
included over $437,000 in stolen wages
ultimately paid back to more than 30
California workers.
The grants awarded through the Life
and Annuity Consumer Protection
Program seek to protect all California
consumers through the investigation of
life and annuity transactions involving
theft, embezzlement, twisting and
churning, forgery, material misrepresentations,
advanced commission
schemes, and identity theft.
The successful investigation and prosecution
of these insurance crimes play
an important role in protecting consumers
and deterring fraudulent activities,
the statement concludes.
In a recent investigation, two co-conspirators
were convicted of grand theft
and ordered to pay a total of $500,000
in restitution to the family of their victim,
who they defrauded and convinced
to purchase unnecessary annuities.

MVCA Activities on the horizon from Bowling to Bingo
with Education & Giving
The Mid-Valley Claims Association comes out of the gate following
CCNC with our 3rd annual Bowling Tournament September 15, 2023.
Returning to Pacific Avenue Bowl in Stockton, the event will run 2:30-
5:30 on a Thursday afternoon. Gather up your teams and/or sponsor
the event. Net proceeds will go toward our annual Community Charity
donations in December.

EBCA to Resume luncheon in October before Bowling in
November and Holiday luncheon in December
The East Bay Claims Association plans to follow CCNC with an important
educational program focusing on Earthquake and Fire Claims Wednesday,
October 11, 2023. This luncheon meeting will feature a presentation
by our own John Ehlert, of JR Structural.
John brings a wealth of information from an engineering perspecive
in line with the International ShakeOut month. Everyone, everywhere
should know how to protect themselves during an earthquake, and those of us in the property
and casualty claims field should be well prepared for such an event.
Come November 8, the EBCA is super excited for our always popular annual Bowling Tournament!
Teams and sponsors are already making plans for a big day at Danville Bowl. This is
traditionally our annual food drive, as well, to benefit the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano
Counties. Please bring some non-perishable food items to contribute.
Wednesday, December 13 is the annual EBCA Holiday luncheon and
Toy Drive at Old Spaghetti Factory in downtown Concord. We will conducting election of new
officers for 2024, as well.
