Preparations are underway for Alfriston’s 

Fun Day taking place on Saturday 23rd

A lovely event, bringing both the school and local

within this specialist provision situated within the

A.J Dunlop raise 

£1000 for Give a 

Dog a Bone charity 

A.J Dunlop Car servicing held another 

successful Open day at their garage in 

the Old Town of Beaconsfield in June this 

year. 

This years charity was in aid of Give a Dog a 

Bone. This organisation offers the opportunity 

for support in giving a dog for company to an 

elderly person. 

The event was opened by the Mayor Of 

Beaconsfield, Councillor Jackson Ng. 

There were some great cars on display and 

entertainment for children and adults 

Alex Dunlop the Proprietor said that he was 

delighted with the turn out and everyone who 

came got something to eat, drink and enter 

the raffle. 

They raised a magnificent £1000 to the charity 

which was a great achievement. 

He would like to thank all the companies 

who helped support the event and is looking 

forward to running the event next year.

What’s been happening at 

Beaconsfield Town Council? 

There has been a lot happening over 

the last few months, with projects 

which have been in process for some 

time finally coming to fruition. 

New Grounds Team 

Beaconsfield Town Council are pleased to 

welcome 2 new staff members who have 

recently joined to form our new Grounds 

Team, Nick Mark and Pete Hutchings who 

will be looking after the Town Council’s parks, 

playgrounds, woodland and garden areas. 

They will also be undertaking certain services 

which we deliver for Buckinghamshire 

Council under our devolved service 

agreement. 

We hope to provide a more responsive 

service by bringing this work in-house. We 

have already been getting a fantastically 

positive response to their work from our 

residents, so do look out for them around 

the town and give them a wave! 

Neighbourhood Plan Next Steps 

At the July Town Council meeting, the 

Neighbourhood Plan version was approved 

to submit to Buckinghamshire Council. They 

will check that proper legal process has 

been followed and will arrange for the plan 

to undergo an independent examination. 

This will be a fair and transparent process 

designed to establish if the plan meets the 

conditions and requirements set out by law, 

if it is sustainable and if fits with strategic 

policies for the local area. The examiner 

and the Local Authority may suggest some 

modifications and once complete, the plan 

will move forward to a public referendum. 

The public consultations we carried out 

previously were overwhelmingly supportive 

of the policy statements. 

The Town Council are very grateful to our 

Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, a 

mix of councillors and residents who have 

volunteered considerable time to this 

project over the last few years. We are 

lucky to have had the benefit of their 

skill-sets as the group included an architect, 

surveyor, civil engineer and local residents 

and business people. Thank you!

It has been a number of years since the 

Mayor’s Reception was last held. This year 

we took the opportunity to acknowledge 

the service of the last two Mayors, Cllr 

Alex Dunlop and Cllr Alastair Pike. For the 

occasion Mayor Jackson Ng briefly lent the 


Jackie Ward and Cllr Alastair Pike 

Mayoral Chain to Cllr Anita Cranmer (Mayor 

2018), for her to pass to Cllr Alex Dunlop 

2019-2021, who then passed it to Cllr 

Alastair Pike 2021-2023 before returning it to 

the current owner. 

Cllr Pike took the opportunity to present 

Jackie Ward from the South Bucks Hospice 

with a cheque for £5000 raised through 

activities for his chosen charity. He presented 

the Mayor’s Youth Award to Sarah Plumridge 

(15) from Alfriston School and a gift to the 

very worthy runner-up, Owen Edwards 

(16) from The Beaconsfield School. They 

were both nominated for their excellent 

volunteering work in Beaconsfield over the 

last year. He also proposed to reinstate the 

Mayor’s Air Force cadet, a youth position 

which hasn’t been filled since before the 

Covid pandemic.

held their first charity Fair at Hall Thursday

Delays, delays, delays 

– impact on children 

in family law cases 

For separating parents, the living arrangements 

for the children is one of the many things that 

need to be agreed. Whilst some parents are 

able to agree what is best for the children, 

others cannot and sadly require the intervention 

of the Court. 

Divorce is a major change in any child’s life. Research from the Royal 

College of Psychiatrists shows that emotional and behavioural 

problems in children are more common when their parents are 

separating and children can become very insecure as a result. 

Children need certainty, a reliable schedule and minimal changes 

to their daily life. Yet, in circumstances where the children require 

certainty quickly, they are being let down by significant delays in 

the family Court. 

Latest statistics produced by the Government show that it is taking, 

on average, 47 weeks for private children law cases to reach closure 

– an increase of 4 weeks for the same period in 2022. However, 

the reality is often much longer. During that time, many parents 

may not have seen their child for a period of time and the effect 

on children caught up in the Court system is worrying. 

Court hearings. The last time the case was in Court was January 

2023. The hearing has been adjourned twice since due to judicial 

unavailability. It is not known when the next hearing may be. The 

Court system is broken after years of underfunding by the state. 

The Court staff and Judges are doing what they can however the 

system is often leaving families in significant uncertainty and coping 

with years of litigation. 

At Rayden Solicitors we always try to encourage parents to consider 

alternative dispute resolution, for example: 

• Engaging in mediation; 

• Reaching agreement through solicitor correspondence; or 

• Children’s arbitration. 

At Rayden Solicitors we have trained mediators and Children 

Arbitrators that can assist parents that require those services. 

However not all cases are suitable for mediation or arbitration. 

Where there are safeguarding concerns alleged from one or both 

parents (such as domestic abuse/violence, abduction, child abuse, 

substance abuse or other safety concerns), mediation and/or 

arbitration are not suitable. Therefore, if agreement cannot be 

reached through solicitors, then the next step is issuing Court 

proceedings. 

The Ministry of Justice are providing eligible families with 

a one-off £500 contribution towards mediation costs, 

to try and steer many cases away from Court. This 

is a welcome investment in mediation services. 

However, it does not assist those where mediation 

is not suitable or is unsuccessful. Further funding 

in the Court system is required to provide families 

with proper access to justice and a timely 

resolution for the sake of the children.

When one pair is 

never enough... 

I’m often asked why we recommend having 

more than one pair of glasses. Some say, 

“I’ve managed for years with these. 

Why would I change? “. What if you were to break 

or lose them? Glasses are made to your prescription, 

delivery times are often two weeks. Could you drive, 

read and work without them? If no, then it is best to 

have an extra pair. If you wear varifocals you can look 

at a shopping list, see the items on the shelves and 

the signs over the aisles, but sometimes they aren’t 

easy to use if you use a PC or laptop for a number 

of hours. 

A better option might be an occupational (or 

degressive) lens. If you have a pair of distance-glasses 

do you have prescription sunglasses for driving? 

With sports such as squash, skiing, golf and diving 

your everyday glasses are unlikely to give you the 

protection and/or vision your eyes need. There are 

special lens materials, tints and lens designs that will 

be more suitable. 

If you wear your glasses just for near tasks then you’ll 

understand the need to have more than one pair. 

When you want to read something and find that 

your glasses are upstairs or in your car etc. As most 

of us don’t have the same prescription in both eyes , 

the cheap ready-readers are ok for a quick glance at 

something but aren’t ideal if you love to read or have 

detailed close work to do. 

Glasses are now a desirable fashion item. With so 

many beautiful bold and subtle colours and shapes 

why wear the same pair everyday? You wouldn’t play 

sport in high heels or go to a ball in wellies so why 

try and manage with one style of eyewear? They are 

an extension to your personality and one of the first 

things someone sees when they look at you. For help

Many people overestimate how much they’ll 

need to live on in retirement, thinking that they’ll 

spend the equivalent of their wages. 

Another common perception is that you’ll need between 

half and two-thirds of the final salary you had when you 

were working, after tax, to maintain your lifestyle once 

you retire. This assumes however that the mortgage has 

been repaid, you are no longer bringing up children and 

of course you won’t face the cost of commuting once 

you’ve retired. 

“Which” magazine conducted a survey in April 2022 to 

help figure out how much individuals need in retirement. 

Households with two people spent a shade under 

£2,340 a month, or around £28,000 a year, on average 

to be ‘comfortable’. This covers all the basic areas of 

expenditure (which had a combined cost of £19,000 per 

year on average) and some luxuries, such as European 

holidays, hobbies and eating out. Aiming for this level of 

income will provide a good platform for your retirement. 

You’d need £45,000 a year if you include luxuries such as 

long-haul trips and a new car every five years. Travelling 

and holidays are a very important part of retirement, with 

people spending on average £4,657 a year on this part 

of their life. 

“61% of under 65-year-olds have no idea what their 

retirement income will be. ” 

Priorities change slightly as you move through your 

retirement years. People tend to spend relatively less on 

food and drink, housing payments and recreation as they 

get older, particularly over the age of 80, but more on 

utility bills, health, and insurance premiums. 

Since the research individuals would have undoubtedly 

spent more on energy, food and petrol.
