As we reach the end of summer
which has not been the greatest
in terms of weather it will be
interesting to see which way the
wind is blowing in regard to the
environment as the next general
election approaches.
I live close to London and the
ULEZ extension has been on
top of the agenda for many
people. The statistics on
London’s air quality are
extremely worrying with the
WHO saying that air pollution
far exceeds limits. Do we ignore
the evidence and continue to
put lives at risk? I would imagine
we would not like a polluting
business near our home or place
of work and it is impressive that
blinds companies are stepping
up and taking on board their
environmental responsibilities.
We are all aware that there is a
cost involved, but it seems a
small price to pay for a healthy
future.

re-release arrives
Ultrafabrics has announced a re-release of its legacy brand
Brisa with a recycled backcloth made of EIGHT plastic
bottles per yard of fabric. The company has also diversified
the color offering by including nine new curated shades for
a total of 54.
For almost 25 years Ultrafabrics’ Brisa
performance fabric has been a go-to for
designers and specifiers across all markets
including furniture and commercial
environments, because of its breathable
technology and exceptional haptics. This
high-tech performance fabric is a leather
alternative that integrates Ultrafabrics’
proprietary ventilation system and
promotes airflow for ultimate seating
comfort.
Nicole Meier, head of branding at
Ultrafabrics, explains the company’s
approach: “This relaunch of Brisa is one of
many sustainability focused initiatives we’re
doing to reach our aggressive goals as a
manufacturing company. Independent
analysis says we are ahead of our
competitors, but we aren’t looking over our
shoulders. The goal to achieve sustainability
without a sacrifice in haptics, comfort or
performance is our only focus.”
EIGHT plastic bottles per yard with
trusted global fiber partnerships
Brisa will be the first full collection to
include recycled polyester and responsiblysourced
rayon in the backing. It supports
Ultrafabrics’ material innovation goal to
include more renewable and/or recycled
materials across its portfolio.
The recycled polyester is derived from
pre- and post- consumer waste including
recycled plastic bottles and post-industrial
waste to create high-quality yarns.
Ultrafabrics uses polyester yarn which
includes an estimated 8.3 recycled plastic
bottles per yard of fabric in its legacy Brisa
collection.
The rayon fibers are transparently
sourced from various sustainable wood
inputs from certified and controlled forests
that meet strict sustainability requirements.
By 2025, all Ultrafabrics products sold to
furniture, healthcare, recreational vehicle,
marine, aviation and accessories markets will
have reached their goal of including at least
50% rapidly renewable and/or recycled
resources. This is five years ahead of the
original goal. Uniting Japanese craftsmanship,
state-of-the-art technology, and sustainably
focused innovation, Ultrafabrics materials
are designed to make a difference.
Nine new, carefully curated colors have
been added to the Brisa collection. The new
additions express a renewed energy and
excitement that uplifts the existing palette.
Joining the collection are Ice Pink, Mystic
Beige, Clear Quartz, Hazey, Lamb’s Ear,
Honeydew, Harbor Mist, Rising Tide, and
Yukon Gold.

rebranding to QMotion EMEA. This new
company identity reflects its
geographical operations within the
European, Middle East and African
market and celebrates over 10 years of
fabricating QMotion products.
The brand has been supplying
integrators with automated window
treatments across the EMEA region for
the past decade, but its brand name
hasn’t reflected this targeted territory.
With new customers recognising the
value that QMotion solutions provide
their business and their clients,
the company wanted to reaffirm that
the product range is available across the
EMEA region. This new corporate
identity achieves this for the brand and
reaffirms that QMotion EMEA as the

to our customers, and the Senses system we
recently launched is the perfect example of this. It

It was developed with the customer in mind. The
new system maintains the stylish Senses aesthetic,
with many improved features and benefits.
The key message is simplicity and scalability, so
you can scale up your blind to gain enhanced
capabilities without the need for lots of additional
componentry.
We have developed an improved smoothness of
operation through well engineered friction units,
with built-in chain guides to fascia endcaps.
Supporting the trend for wider windows and
wider width blinds, this system boasts blinds up to
3.5m wide and up to a 6m drop.
Reduce stock holding needs with the universality
of components; only 3 bracket types are required
to achieve all chain-op and motorised blind sizes.
Installation is also easy for the Fascia & Mounting
Profile blinds with common mounting brackets.
The 32mm, 40mm and 48mm tubes are all
compatible within the Fascia, Mounting Profile and
as Standard Fit. The 48mm tube is designed to fit
40mm friction units and motor crown & drive with
no additional componentry necessary.
The built-in Mirage channel on Fascia &
Mounting Profile reduces additional componentry
count, as well as improving assembly process and
panel coverage.
The new Senses Universal Fascia is available in 5
colours with complementing endcaps. It also allows
for reverse roll fabric drops of up to 3m. Multiple
blinds can be fitted within the same fascia using the
new universal brackets.
Our new Senses Crank and Coupling options
also allow you to bring enhanced functionality to
your Senses Roller Blinds. Both work within Fascia,
Mounting Profile or as Standard Fit to suit a wide
variety of installation requirements.
Choose the Crank control with a fixed or
removable rod to bring additional control options
to your customers. The Coupling system brings the
ability to drive two or more blinds together, at the
same rate, using a single control method and can
be used with Chain Op, Powershade Motors or
Crank Drive controls.

In recent years, awning manufacturer markilux has
created a national and international network of
its own exhibition and training centres as well as
customer showrooms on the premises of its
specialist dealers. Both concepts are closely
interrelated, because, at the point of sale, they rely
on a consistent brand image and a positive
experience of the product world. In this way, the
company has been able to grow steadily in
important core markets.
=Developing a brand requires strategy and longterm
investment. According to Christiane Berning,
head of the Marketing and Business Development
Department at markilux, a consistent and
representative external image is particularly
important. “That is why today we are represented
by many of our own exhibition and training centres
as well as specialist dealer showrooms throughout
Europe and beyond,” explains the marketing expert.
Flagship stores promote sales
success
The stores in Emsdetten, Hamburg, Cologne,
Berlin, Lörrach and Salzburg are thus important
contact points for end consumers in Germanspeaking
countries. Here, you can become
acquainted with the entire range of the brand, live.
In addition, high-quality outdoor furniture from a
trade cooperation complements the product
portfolio in some flagship stores. The aim here is to
show how patios and balconies can be designed in
a harmonious style. But the showrooms are not just
intended to showcase products. They are also used
as training centres for specialist dealers and are the
place where end consumers can be advised in
person. The company’s stores are thus important
for achieving sales success, explains Christiane
Berning. In particular because they also refer
customers to specialist dealers.
Attractive locations draw
visitors
This applies equally to the international
showroom network, which has grown steadily in
recent years. “We based the concept on the
positive example of the first international
showroom in Salzburg, which was opened in
2007,” explains Peer Cornelßen, Head of
International Sales. From 2015, the facility in the
“Business Design Centre” in London has been an
important stepping stone in Europe outside
German-speaking countries. Just one year later, the
awning manufacturer was also represented at
“Huset”, the largest Danish exhibition for the
building and living sectors. In 2017, another
exhibition venue was added to the network in
Madrid. “Our expansion course then took us to
the ‘New York Design Center’ in Manhattan in
2020 and in 2022 we were able to open the new
showroom in Sydney, where we have been active
for 13 years. As of this year, there is now also a
showroom at the ‘Pacific Design Center’ in West
Hollywood, near Los Angeles,” says a highly
satisfied Peer Cornelßen. In addition to an
attractive variety of brands and products, many of
the locations offer numerous cultural activities that
attract visitors. In this way, and through their own
events, they can draw attention to the brand.
Specialist dealer showrooms
strengthen brand image
In addition to the company’s own showrooms,
the large number of specialist dealers’ showrooms
also plays a central role in global sales. Adherence
to the brand image at the point of sale (POS) is
crucial for this. To this end, the awning expert
supports its specialist partners in planning their
showrooms with the “Marketing Customer
Service”. “We help with measuring up, give advice
regarding design, draw up draft plans and provide
support during construction and the opening,” says
Christiane Berning of the range of services offered.
"End consumers thus find themselves in a world
familiar to them through advertising and the
markilux stores. In this way, the two POS concepts
mesh ideally with one another", she explains. The
flagship stores draw attention to the brand and the
products. Specialist dealers benefit from the end
consumers referred to them and reinforce the
positive experience of the customer with their
showroom offer as well as good service. This is a
win-win situation and creates the best conditions
for future growth in both national and international
markets.

from Dieter Heyman, who has helped put

Blind fabrics are the definitive component of
any blind, dictating the degree of shading

fabrics to choose from, each with its own unique

perfected an easy
way for blinds and
shutters to be
installed
There was a time, not so long ago, when
consumers used to allow blind installation
teams to drill and screw into their pristine
new extension, conservatory or skylight to install
their much needed shading product. Just think of it
– paying a significant amount of money to have
the finished item turned into a form of Swiss
cheese - not exactly the result you would want.
Of course, much of that changed when
Louvolite introduced its revolutionary Perfect Fit
programme, allowing window shades to be
installed into windows featuring double glazed
sealed units and flexible gaskets. Not only did this
remove the need for drilling or screwing, but it
also changed the measurement and installation
time from minutes to mere seconds! Initially
destined for use with pleated, cellular and 25mm
venetian blinds, the programme quickly developed
to accommodate roller shades and more recently,
Vision blinds – along with motorisation options
too.
In addition to the obvious benefits seen with
Perfect Fit products, they also move with the
window/door installation giving the consumer the
benefit of having shade or privacy with the blind
down, yet still allowing in fresh air or easy access.
The current trend for bi-fold doors also offers
challenges for shading products, yet Perfect Fit
with cellular fabrics simply does the job easily,
quickly and with maximum flexibility in terms of
deployment.
Of course, there are some products that are
installed in such a way that they need a great deal
more time and experience to firstly measure the
window - accounting for all the nuances of British
window systems. As with measuring, the
installation process can also be best left to those
experienced in the complex nature of such
products. Items such as external shading systems,
Zip blinds and internal louvred shutters could all
fall into this category. Shutters have fast become a
highly fashionable and coveted product; when
measured and installed correctly, they can totally
transform a room. Indeed Louvolite itself supplies
its very own Urban Shutter programme and, as
with other good shutter companies, operates a full
training programme to cover all aspects of
surveying and installation.
However, Louvolite recognised that the
traditional style of Shutter was not within the
financial grasp of many consumers. In addition, it
also believed that if a shutter product could be
measured for and installed simply and quickly, it
would also allow the wider industry to benefit
from the product’s popularity. So, in a typical
“back to the future” moment, it decided to try
and combine the Perfect Fit concept with louvred
shutters.
The result? No complex measurements to take;
simply measure the glass size, bead to bead, for
the width and drop and detail the location of any
handles ……that’s it!
Installation follows the exact same path as other
Perfect Fit products. Use a credit card or the
Louvolite Perfect Fit measuring card to establish
your bracket location and install the brackets
between the flexible gasket and the double-glazed
sealed unit. In the case of the Perfect Fit Shutter,
the brackets are typically fitted to the top and
bottom of the window or door.
Take the shutter and align the receiving
locations with the bottom brackets. The brackets
flex slightly allowing the top receiving locations to
find the lugs in the top brackets – that’s it, all done,
fitted in seconds.
The apparent complexity, long lead in times and
limited supplier options may have put you off
selling shutters up to now, but the Perfect Fit
Shutter programme is one that alleviates all those
issues and takes away concerns over measuring
and fitting these great products.

Amodern building of 28,000 m², the new
hospital was designed to blend perfectly
into the semi-rural landscape of Voiron,
Isère, and to comply with sustainable
development standards such as RT2012 and
HQE. This sustainable building offers healthcare
staff and patients optimum thermal and visual
comfort.
The architecture firm Gautier + Conquet
chose Mermet solar protection fabrics to protect
users from heat and glare while retaining the
exceptional view over the Chartreuse massif.
Over 640 cabled motorised roller blinds from
ATES, made with Mermet’s Satiné 5500 fabric in
colour 3030 Charcoal were installed externally.
These vertical blinds are able to:
• reject 96% of solar energy,
providing excellent protection against heat
• filter 96% of light rays for very good glare
control thanks to the fabric's diagonal satin weave
• allow maximum natural light to enter
• maintain a clear view outdoors thanks to the

In addition, 62 chain roller blinds made with SV

New markilux

Hollywood
After opening a showroom in New York
just over two years ago, markilux has now
opened a further flagship store in the US
near Los Angeles – in the “Pacific Design Center”
in West Hollywood. Since the end of April, the
awning manufacturer has been exhibiting many of
its products on around 110 square meters in an
architecturally spectacular environment and trendy
design district.
markilux opened its second showroom in the
US at the end of April at the heart of West
Hollywood, on the corner of Melrose Avenue and
San Vicente Boulevard. The new location, at which
the company is presenting a selection of its
awning range, is called the “Pacific Design Center”
(PDC). This attractive hotspot, which attracts
many affluent Californians from the region around
Los Angeles, is yet another ideal location for
markilux.
International brand variety
in the PDC
“You can find us directly on the ground floor of
the ‘Blue Whale’ - one of three architecturally
impressive building complexes of the PDC and
landmark of West Hollywood,” explains Peer
Cornelssen, Head of International Sales at
markilux. The glass, six-storey blue steel building
from the 1970s offers around 70,000 square
metres of space to more than 70 international
showrooms and stores. They show an exquisite
selection of contemporary home and contract
furniture, fabrics, floor coverings, designer lamps
and products for solar protection. More than
2,000 leading manufacturers are represented in
this building with their product lines for both
residential and corporate premises.
Showroom offers space for
large awnings
Peer Cornelssen is thrilled with the ambience of
the location: “The showroom is light, with high
ceilings and plenty of daylight. Here, we can also
exhibit our large awning systems such as the
‘pergola stretch’, ‘markilux markant’ and the ‘syncra’
system,” he explains. Initially, the company will be
exhibiting twelve models from its product range,
including the “MX-3”, the “markilux 6000” and the
“markilux 970”. Further “MX models” will follow
after the opening. The showroom also features
equipment required for sales pitches, including
fabric samples, light boxes as well as cassette
profile samples. The showroom will also offer
training sessions for authorised dealers.
West Coast location attracts
visitors
Peer Cornelssen explains that the new West
Coast location benefits from a rich art and
entertainment scene and is part of an
international design community. That means many
high earners – for example from the film and
television industry – live in the region. “The PDC
thus attracts lots of people interested in design.
Especially as another building houses a film
theatre, conference rooms, a fitness centre and
the ‘Museum of Contemporary Art’,” explains the
awning expert.

It’s not just large patios that need good
protection from the sun, but also small outdoor
spaces. Manufacturer markilux has special
awnings and lateral solutions in its product range
that also provide protection from prying eyes.
Outdoor living is an ongoing trend, which is why
awnings that protect outdoor spaces from the sun
and wind are very much in demand. And that is
also true of small balconies and roof terraces, as
well. One of the companies offering a special
selection of products, which at the same time
provide protection against prying eyes, is awning
specialist markilux.
Protection from the wind and prying eyes
Practical solutions are offered by the vertical
roller blinds “620” and “625” fitted with a “tracfix”
system, that keeps the cover perfectly taut or the
marquisolette model “740”, for example. They can
all be easily attached to a wall or under a balcony
as sun protection and privacy screen. As such, they
provide plenty of protection from the wind and
prying eyes. The side awning markilux “790” is also
suitable for this purpose, additionally providing
protection against a low-lying sun. Attached to a
wall, it is quickly extended by means of the
integrated handle. For balconies with a sloping
roof overhang, it is also available with an angled
top edge. In this constellation, it can be combined
well with a compact pergola awning or a foldingarm
awning.
Awnings for special purposes
Products with a slimline cover cassette are ideal
for protecting small outdoor seating areas from
the sun and heat. This helps them blend in with
the building feature to which they have been
attached. There are also special stretch awnings for
balconies, reveals and roof terraces that require a
large projection, i.e. the markilux “1600” and
“1710” models. They are fitted with special arms
that extend a particularly long way out. Freestanding
systems are also well suited for small
outside areas as they combine the advantages of
an awning with those of a parasol as in the case of
the “syncra” model. The awning hangs on a crossbeam
supported by two lateral posts, giving you
plenty of space under the solar protection system.
It is either fixed permanently to the ground or
held in place by ballast boxes that can used as
plant beds or as a seat. Smart or sensor-controlled
technology makes the awnings easy to operate
and, together with lighting systems and infrared
heaters, they offer the same comfort as the
systems developed for larger terraces.

high-precision track system. The Portofino is
available as an interior awning and a pergola
model with a variety of optional extras: a
Vario valance on the front profile ensures
added privacy and shade from the sun as
well as reducing glare when the sun is low

After Lewens brought the Murano
Integrale Zip glass roof with integral zip
awning onto the market in 2021, the model

In 2022, the “Tauernklinik Zell am See” in
Pinzgau, Austria, had part of the patio adjacent
to its staff canteen covered with a
weatherproof awning system. They opted for the
“pergola classic” from markilux which boasts a
waterproof cover. Since then, the patio has served
as a relaxing retreat for the employees.
After undergoing several years of complex
renovation, the “Tauernklinik Zell am See” is now
an ultra-modern hospital. The most recent change
was initiated just two years ago, when the inner
courtyard of the building complex was redesigned.
Last summer, part of the patio area adjacent to
the clinic canteen was equipped with a large
multi-field “pergola classic” awning system from
markilux.
Relaxing atmosphere
“It was important for the client to have a
modern-looking shading system of high product
quality. It was to pick up on the architectural style
of the building and add a charming touch of
colour. Thanks to the fresh green shade of the
awning cover, the space below now appears bright
and friendly, with a pleasantly relaxing
atmosphere,” explains Jan Kattenbeck, head of
“markilux project”. And that was exactly their
objective. The clinic management had wanted to
make the 120 square metre outdoor area more
attractive for the nursing staff and doctors. “The
canteen area where the employees take their
breaks was to be extended to the outside,
provide a refreshing retreat and, if possible, able to
be used regardless of the weather,” adds Mr
Kattenbeck.
System installed in just two
days
The manufacturer’s pergola system fulfils this
requirement perfectly. Due to the supporting
posts and the "tracfix technology", in which the
cover is held firmly in the guide tracks, the awning
is very stable in windy conditions. “Depending on
the size of the system, one or more of the front
posts can also be lowered. This means that
rainwater can run off the cover more easily,” says
Mr Kattenbeck. In addition, the highly waterrepellent
“sunvas perla FR” awning cover was
chosen for the facility in Zell am See as protection
against light rain – a special fabric that is also
highly flame-retardant. For public buildings like the
“Tauernklinik” hospital, certain safety regulations
have to be observed. The awning expert is now
delighted with another successful reference
project and pleased that cooperation between the
specialist dealer responsible on site and all other
fitters and workmen went so well. “Everything was
timed so that it would be possible to install the
large pergola in just two days. You can't ask for
more than that. And naturally the customer is just
as pleased about that as we are,” stresses Mr
Kattenbeck.

Sails end glare and let natural light filter in,
improving glazed roof settings. Design for
noise reduction and visual impact – patterns,
logos, colour – enhances a glazed space.
Acoustics. Sail blinds can be oriented quite
easily to optimise acoustics. This flexibility is
inherent in sails because their shape and
orientation are not limited by a window frame.
A large, multi-story atrium, for example, may
suffer from echo and reverberation that make the
space uncomfortable. Bad acoustics can affect
adjacent offices, while rain on the roof may be
distractingly loud. We can assess an atrium’s design,
location, and materials to determine the required

Digital printing of colour and patterns. Sail blinds
use advanced fabrics to filter glare, and an effective
way to color such fabrics is by digital printing. For
this reason, digital printing has been a feature of
our sail blind solutions for nearly two decades.
Digital printing has multiple benefits, such as
colour matching: provide a sample, and you can
create sail fabric in almost any colour imaginable,
to produce sail blinds that tie-in to branding or a
specific colour scheme. Dye sublimation printing
to the inside surface is accurate and permanent,
faithfully reproducing hues that do not fade over
time.
Sail colours behave differently under varying
light intensity. It is possible to tailor sails to the light
levels that best suit an indoor setting and its uses.
Introducing a sail colour can enhance the light and
mood, transforming a glazed space in exciting
ways.

Löwen in Austria
The Hotel Löwen is situated in the middle
of an impressive mountain landscape in the
outstretched Montafon valley in Austria. In
2022, the management once again invested in the
expansion of the establishment and that included
furnishing the restaurant terrace with bespoke
weather protection. They chose awning systems
from markilux to do the job. Since then, guests
have been able to spend more time enjoying
themselves on the terrace throughout the
summer.
The Hotel Löwen is a four-star superior hotel
located in the Austrian mountain village of
Schruns in Vorarlberg. Last year, the outdoor
terrace adjacent to the hotel was one of the
aspects of the hotel that was given a make-over.
All-year weather protection was to make it more
attractive for guests and visitors. Since then, a
“pergola stretch” awning system from
manufacturer markilux has been shading the
terrace. A smaller, separate area has also been
equipped with the free-standing “markilux
markant” system.
More than 200 square
metres of weather
protection
“We developed the shading concept in the
autumn of 2021 together with a local specialist
dealer as well as the architects and interior
designers responsible for the rest of the expansion
of the hotel,” explains Jan Kattenbeck, head of
“markilux project”. In July 2022, the local specialists
then started by installing the pergola system
measuring around 165 square metres and consisting
of five separate awning units – a task that took them
just one week. At the end of 2022, it took them just
two days to set up the free-standing system –
measuring over 50 square metres. Naturally, the
awning specialist’s experienced and highly
competent service team provided support during
the installation of both systems.

the awnings
According to Jan Kattenbeck, the
cooperation of a qualified planning team
with a local specialist dealer was one of the
customer’s main priorities along with the
high quality of both the product and the
design. Equally important was their wish to
protect an area large enough to seat a total
of around 100 outdoor guests from rain
and sun during the summer season. To this
end, several vertical roller blinds were also
installed with both awning systems and on
the front of one window. These can simply
be lowered when the sun is low in the sky
and, together with the LED light integrated
in the awning, create a pleasant atmosphere
in the evening. “This wonderful feeling of
being outdoors encourages the guests to
linger longer and is now very much a part
of the sophisticated experience concept the
Hotel Löwen is aiming to achieve. Along
with smooth conclusion of the project, that
represents success for both us and the
customer,” says a satisfied Jan Kattenbeck.

Automation.

concept: A brief
history from
Caribbean Blinds
Temperatures across the globe have soared
in recent weeks due to the El Niño weather
pattern, and many countries – including the
UK – have experienced multiple heatwaves as a
result.
Because of this, the Environmental Audit
Committee (EAC) has just launched a new inquiry
into heat resilience and sustainable cooling which
aims to look at the relationship between heat and
health and government policies regarding the
current and future need for cooling, as well as the
measures that need to be taken to increase
adaptation and resilience to rising temperatures.
The obvious solution is external shading. Not a
‘new’ concept, different variations of blinds, shutters
and awnings have been used in Europe since ancient
times by people trying to block the sun’s harmful
rays from their homes. Today, these shading products
can effectively manage a number of environmental
factors that have a significant impact on our overall
quality of life, as well as our bank balance.
Why external shading?
Climate change means that our summers are
becoming increasingly warmer, and the issue of
overheating will only become more apparent as
time goes on.
Not only do external shading products such as
blinds, awnings and louvered roofs add style to your
space and provide your home with privacy, but they
also retain and deflect heat whilst controlling light
levels and glare – all year round. They help prevent
unwanted solar heat gain during the summer
months and allow free solar gain in the winter.
External blinds can reject up to 97% of solar
heat gain with minimal energy demand, helping to
prevent overheating. In fact, an appropriately sized,
positioned and specified external shading device
can reduce interior temperatures by up to 18ºC,
which in turn can reduce the energy consumption
otherwise needed to cool down a hot room by
more than 80%, minimising or avoiding the need
for air conditioning.

SOLAR SHADING
Where it all began
Between 800 BC and 500 BC, marble
shutters with fixed slats were used in
ancient Greece. Soon afterwards, wooden
shutters with adjustable louvers appeared
across the Mediterranean, as well as in
medieval Europe where solid shutters were
used to protect households from intruders.
Despite their many advantages, these
exterior solutions could not withstand
severe weather conditions.
Interior solutions were much the same.
Venetian blinds grew in popularity across
Europe since they were invented in the
15th century, reaching their peak on the
American continent by the 20th century
when they had evolved to be manufactured
from aluminium or plastic, as opposed to
wood.
Although the earliest interior blinds
provided privacy for the home, they didn’t
prevent UV rays from penetrating the
windows and warming up the room. It
wasn’t until 1960 that the first outdoor
metal blinds with wide slats were
introduced as a reliable form of external
shading. These were able to endure extreme
weather conditions, and could even
generate electricity using built-in solar
panels, but they were considered an
expensive solution at this time.
Awnings
Not a new concept to the UK, awnings
were used on elaborate glass shop frontages
in the 1800s before air conditioning was
invented as a way to passively cool the
interior of buildings, whilst also protecting
goods from the damaging effects of the sun.
Today, awnings are growing in popularity
because not only do they offer additional
privacy – particularly in built-up areas – but
they are essential for a healthy living
environment.
Awnings provide instant shade from
sunlight; both heat and glare (bright light),
outstanding UV protection (typically 97.5%
minimum UV block) and shelter from
unexpected rain showers. They also provide
a much-needed cooling effect to the indoor
room adjacent to where they are positioned,
ensuring a comfortable living space, whilst
filtering UV rays to stop fixtures and
furnishings from fading.
A recent report carried out by Fact.MR
revealed that the retractable awnings
market in the UK is set to achieve $697.77
million by 2033. Many homes across the
country have limited indoor space, meaning
more and more homeowners are looking
towards extended outdoor living solutions
instead. Retractable awnings allow for an
additional living space that can be used in all
weather conditions, meaning people can
enjoy their gardens, patios and balconies all
year round.

can to ensure our homes are fully equipped
to prevent unwanted solar heat gain during

dimension and spa
experience
In June 2023, external shading company
Caribbean Blinds delivered a highly effective and
stylish outdoor shading solution in the form of 4
luxury louvered cabanas at Pennyhill Park Hotel &
Spa in Surrey, resulting in the ultimate ‘spa garden’
experience for guests to enjoy – all year round.
The client
Set over 120 acres of beautiful Surrey woodland,
Pennyhill Park is a 19th century country house
presenting guests with the opportunity to indulge
in the best, be at their best and realise their
potential. With 124 luxurious bedrooms and suites,
an award-winning Michelin-starred restaurant and
over 45,000 sq/ft of exceptional spa facilities
offering 20 spa experiences, Pennyhill Park is
Surrey’s most luxurious hotel and spa retreat.
The brief
The client required a premium space set within
the luxurious spa grounds where guests could fully
switch off from the world and experience the
ultimate alfresco spa day. By incorporating the
concept “a little bit extra” when creating the
beautiful new spa garden at Pennyhill Park, it was
concluded that a key part of the design would
consist of 4 cabanas which would provide guests
with a private ‘pad’ for the day.
The finished result
Our ‘Deluxe’ Outdoor Living Pod was selected
by the project designer due to its flexibility – in
particular the ability to incorporate additional
uprights and a wall to the rear and part side where
the padded bench, loungers, fridge and coffee
machine are all incorporated. Each module, which
measures 5m x 4m, provides ample space for the
facilities within.
Designed to feel like a luxury hotel room that
has been brought into the great outdoors, guests
can enjoy a luxurious and private setting whilst
soaking up the sun and enjoying all the spa facilities,
including the copper roll-top spa bath.
The motorised rotating louvered roofs allow
guests to play with light and shade to create the
perfect ambience beneath the structure from
sunrise to sunset, whilst the optional integrated
screens on the open sides can be deployed as
required to provide privacy, whilst also offering
protection from the low sun and light breezes.
Close collaboration with the interior designer
and facilities manager throughout ensured a
smooth process, including the provision of fully
detailed CAD drawings for a seamless
incorporation of the structures into the overall
scheme, which was particularly important for the
positioning of foundations and services. From
drawing and design sign-off through to installation
was 12 weeks, with installation taking just 4 days to
complete.

and relax in style. The ‘Deluxe’ Outdoor Living
Pod provides privacy and shade from above and
on all sides with remote control blinds, whilst being
beautifully adaptable, allowing us to build around
the space to create the perfect indulgent haven.
Our vision was to bring the luxury of a hotel room
to the great outdoors, which Caribbean Blinds
seamlessly helped us achieve.”
