Blinds & Shutters - Issue 3/2023

Summer seems to have arrived and I imagine it’s peak season for companies that are involved in the awnings and solar shading markets. There seems to a lot of choices out there and it will be interesting to see how the home improvement market copes with the increasing of interest rates over the last few months. Lots of fixed mortgage rates are coming to an end, from historically low levels, so it way create another shock to consumers. So fingers crossed that it’s not as bad as some economists would have us believe and hopefully the rest of the summer will be long and hot!

MX-4 from markilux receives
Red Dot Design Award
The “MX-4” is the latest designer model from markilux.
Not long on the market, the attractive cassette awning is
already the proud winner of the “Red Dot Design Award”
2023. The award is one of the major international design
competitions. The awning specialist has received this
award, along with many other prizes, in the “Product
Design” category a number of times.
Products from markilux can be described
as attractive, intelligent and smart. In recent
years, the awning expert has been able to
score points time and again, especially with
its stylish MX family. Not just with end users,
but also with a range of design award juries.
This time it was the turn of the latest model,
the cassette awning “MX-4”, to impress the
high-calibre jury of the “Red Dot Design
Award” in the category “Product Design”,
earning it the coveted award.
“We were absolutely delighted to receive
this award, as the award, based in Essen,
Germany, is one of the world’s largest and
most famous competitions. It has a decadeslong
tradition and only awards prizes for the
very best designs,” says Michael Gerling,
Director of R&D and Production. The
company has already received the award
several times for a number of its awnings.
Every time they receive the award it is a
great success for the entire development
team and confirms the company’s creative
concept. “Particularly when you think that
around 20,000 design concepts are
submitted to the competition every year,”
says Mr Gerling. In 2023 alone, designers and
companies from 60 countries took part in
51 categories in the “Product Design”
discipline.
“Naturally we wanted to be at the front
of the field with the 'MX-4',” says Mr Gerling.
After all, they felt that the overall package of
simple, elegant form, separate LED lights in
the design of the awning and smart lighting
technology with great colour effects had a
winning quality – something which has been
confirmed with the award. The product
impressed the international jury of experts
in the crucial criteria: functionality,
attractiveness, practical value and
responsibility towards people and the
environment. Michael Gerling is convinced
that good design is an essential expression of
the brand’s value and intends to pursue this
successful course. Now, they are looking
forward to the award ceremony during
“Designers Night” on 19 June. That is when
Michael Gerling and Sven Kröner, Head of
the Department of Development and
Construction, will be receiving the award in
the “Red Dot Design Museum”.
Continued partnership
Bradford City AFC is pleased to confirm BlindsbyPost will
continue as an official club partner, ahead of the 2023/24
campaign. The continuation of the sponsorship has been
marked by BlindsbyPost’s range of dedicated Bradford City
AFC branded blinds.
Having agreed renewed terms with the
club last summer, the Shipley-based blinds
and shutter specialist’s branding will remain
on the University of Bradford Stadium’s
players’ tunnel, as well as in Valley Parade’s
Morrisons Family Stand and The Bradford
Lifts Stand.
BlindsbyPost, who will also continue as the
club’s official Facebook and Instagram
business partner, is a family-run business
which offers a wide range of made-tomeasure
blinds for a number of different
indoor spaces. The online retailer hopes that
the sponsorship of the football club will
contribute towards investment and growth in
the Bradford district.
Oliver Hudson, director of BlindsbyPost,
said: “As a Yorkshire-based business, we’re
proud to not only sponsor our local football
team, but to celebrate our partnership with
our limited edition roller blinds. There are
many passionate fans of the club across the
city and beyond, and we’re proud to offer this
exciting merchandise for the home on our
site.”
City’s commercial manager, Michael
Shackleton, said: “We are delighted to be
entering another season of our partnership
with BlindsbyPost, taking our affiliation into its
fourth year.
“This partnership is one that has already
delivered significantly for us as a club -
including seeing the introduction of our first
players’ tunnel since Valley Parade’s
redevelopment, ahead of the 2020/21 season
- and is one which continues to develop.
“I would like to take this opportunity to
thank Oliver and his team for their continued
support and hard work to make this
partnership a success, and am looking
forward to seeing how it grows over the next
12 months.”
PROFILE
20 years of service
Custom West says
it has provided 20
years of service
and quality
20 years ago, the Custom West brand was
born. 2003 saw the need for a specialist
shutter supplier to come onto the market
and lead the way for window solutions, and that's
where we came in. Two decades later, that demand
can still be seen, and Custom West remains market
leading for custom-made plantation shutters
because of this.
Now coming into the Summer months, 20 years
after we first launched, the need for shutters during
the warmer weather is there more than ever.
Sunshine coming through windows can be difficult
to control sometimes, however it can be easier to
take hold of the sunlight and tailor it with shutters
to meet your customers’ requirements.
Cafe-style shutters and Tier-on-Tier styles allow
your customers to select the areas of window that
require more controlled sunlight, perfect if natural
light is still wanting to be maintained. Bi-fold
solutions have become more common over the
last 20 years, and our tracked shutters seem to be
a very popular choice for these styles of windows
and doors. Generally, any style of our Engineered
Wood, ABS, basswood and premium hardwood
shutters can be beneficial throughout the summer
months, helping to keep rooms cool and shading
areas from the sun. Our new Osmo wax stained
shutters are available in all styles too, with this
additional range contributing to creating the
perfect natural, summer ready look within the
home.
We are passionate about the quality of service
and product that we provide. With all of our
shutter ranges being guaranteed for 3 years, and
with our lead times as low as 3 weeks too, now is
the time to choose Custom West as your shutter
specialists.
and styles, visit customwest.co.uk/products/ourshutters/
Yewdale runs a
number of courses
to help its
installers
As a manufacturer of commercial blinds,
Yewdale want to help their customers
confidently install cassette blinds quickly, so
Yewdale regularly provide training courses for blind
installers.
You will see their expert install an overhead
cassette blind, which is the perfect blind for a
skylight. Installing an overhead blind is challenging
due to the positioning of the window. The
installation demonstration will break down each
stage of the process and provide tips to simplify
the entire process and help you reduce the time it
takes to complete the job.
You will also learn how to install cassette blinds
with side channels following their new goalpost
installation technique. Yewdale have redesigned the
end plates to enable the side channels to be
screwed into the headbox, creating a frame similar
to a football goal. This frame can then be lifted and
fitted via the side channels.
If you're a new blind installer or would like to
refine your skills, Yewdale encourage you to join
their cassette blinds training course and learn how
to install cassette blinds. You can book multiple
spots on the course for additional installers in your
team.
During the course, you will learn to:
• Correctly make deductions
• Tension overhead blinds
• Set the limits for their electric motor
• Choose the best cassette system based
on your requirements
• Install side channel cassettes using the
goalpost technique
The cassette blind training courses take place at
Yewdale's London showroom which is situated in
the heart of Clerkenwell. Once you complete the
course, you will receive a Yewdale certificate and a
bag full of Yewdale goodies to take home.
Keep it upcycling
UPcycling is a
major focus for
Junkers & Müllers
Junkers & Müllers is increasingly incorporating
recycled polyester as a fundamental material in
many articles of its extensive home collection.
Specifically, they utilize PET bottles that have been
recycled. Approximately 3-4 of these 1.5 liter PET
bottles are used to create one square meter of
UPcycled material. This not only helps reduce
global plastic pollution but also extends the
lifespan of resources through recycling, thereby
contributing to a reduced ecological footprint. Last
year, Junkers & Müllers introduced the semitransparent
„SONATA Upcycling“ as part of their pleated
fabric range. Its pleasant textile texture and color
palette, consisting of elegant neutral tones and
powdery fresh shades, have made it a new
standard item within the JM collection.
Now, Junkers & Müllers presents another
printed design on the same quality fabric:
„NORDIC GRASS UPcycling.“ This design
showcases gently swaying grasses in delicately
graphic lines with refined shadow effects. This
pleated fabric creates a soft and airy atmosphere
in any room. Given the growing awareness of
global climate change, the demand for
environmentally friendly and resource-conscious
products is expected to increase. Junkers &
Müllers is well-prepared with this extensive range
of UPcycling products. The percentage of recycled
materials used in JM‘s UPcycling products has
been certified by the independent international
institute, SCS Global Services.
How long?
Don Smith Blinds
says there are long
lead times on PFI
products
Everyone within the window blinds industry is
aware of the seasonal nature of our industry,
particularly for those of us who sell a lot of
highly seasonal products, like awnings and
conservatory roof blinds for example. As soon as
the sun starts shining for a few days, everyone
wants an awning or roof blinds, and they want
them….
Yesterday!
This makes things very difficult for the few small
manufacturers of these products that exist in the
UK. From the feedback I have received from fellow
manufacturers it is pretty common to see lead
times of up to 12 weeks or more for these
products during busy periods.
So, first, let’s define lead time. In general, the lead
time definition is the amount of time from the start
of a process till its end. Lead time meaning varies
according to industry and context. What does lead
time mean in manufacturing? In this case, lead time
is how long it takes to make and deliver a product
or set of products, to the customer. It includes
sourcing, production, and delivery.
Perfect Fit International Roof blinds are very
time consuming to manufacture. A typical standard
roller blind can be made from start to finish in 15
mins or less, a single rectangular PFI Roof Blind can
take 1-2 hours to manufacture depending on its
configuration. This means a job of 10 rectangular
PFI roof blinds can take 1 - 2.5 days to
manufacture. But …. Until the blinds are made,
there is no telling if they will take 1 or 2.5 days. 10
jobs with 10 rectangles could take 10-25 days to
manufacture.
When we get shapes involved, things get more
complicated, for example your typical Edwardian
Conservatory will have 12-14 panels. Shaped PFI
roof blinds consist of 7- 8 lengths of rail, each one
a different size, so the saw has to be adjusted with
every cut. Each corner has a 6mm aluminium
style roof orders could be 30-60 days lead
time or anywhere in-between.
Looking easy so far?
The problem arises when the orders are
not just 10 jobs of rectangles or 10
Edwardian roofs, but a mixture of Lean-to,
Edwardian, Victorian roofs, P-shaped roofs,
all with different numbers of panels, all with
different configurations and nuances, they
are, after all, highly bespoke items. So, what
do I mean by
configuration? What could be so different
as to extend the lead times by that amount?
At Don Smith Blinds we developed a layflat
system for all of our shaped roof blinds,
this stops the fabric fanning, it also prevents
the fabric from catching the filos whilst
operating thus extending the life of the
fabric, filos and the blind generally. This layflat
system adds 30 mins per blind in extra
manufacturing time. We mill out for tie bars,
this involves fully assembling the frame,
marking it, dismantling it, milling the cut out
on a milling machine and reassembling. We
also offer 3 different top finishes as well as
infills.
All these things add up, and are
impossible to estimate how long they will all
take, not with any realistic or accurate
timeframe. This issue is compounded by the
fact that demand for the product is
primarily driven by the sun!! When the sun
shines everyone wants to order them, when
it doesn’t very few do. This makes it
incredibly difficult to plan or predict when it
comes to staffing, particularly when it takes
months to teach someone the basics of
manufacturing these products, and years to
become competent at manufacturing them
well, making temporary staff more of a
hinderance than a help.
So, I ask you this. Why are customers
happy to wait 20 weeks for a sofa? Sofas
can be mass produced and the templates
for the fabric are standard. Yes, the fabric
you chose may be different to the fabric I
chose, but the frame is the same size, and
the fabrics take the same amount of time to
cut and upholster. Why are customers
happy to wait for a car for 9-15 months
even though they are produced by robots
and all the parts are the same? Simply put,
because of how it was sold. The sofa, you
chose a custom fabric, the car, you chose
some custom options it is bespoke,
customised to your specification. How we
sell roof blinds…… yeah, they will keep the
sun off mate!
How we should sell our roof blinds….
We will be providing you with a professional
survey and installation of bespoke roof
blinds. These roof blinds are hand made in
the UK by a few small manufactures, I’m
sure you can appreciate that during the
summer, particularly if it’s a hot one, that the
lead times can be very long, as this is the
time when everyone orders these types of
blinds. But don’t worry, if you miss this
summer, you will find that they are just as
efficient in the winter at keeping the warm
air in your conservatory and the cold
convection currents out.
Ihave worked within the shutter industry for
nearly 5 years and have been the new Business
Account Manager with C&C Trade Shutters
since the beginning of the year. Personally, I love the
variety of people I meet in this trade role, and I’ve
seen some truly incredible builds and renovations
already.
Previously, my career was in retail, offering
consultation to emerging designers and businesses,
and worked as a Visual Merchandiser. The skills I
developed in these roles helped me greatly in
terms of offering support and direction to those
looking to energise their business.
A typical week for me is split between the office
and getting out and about on the road. I deal with
all new trade account enquiries and help them to
get up and running. Typical onboarding includes a
site visit, bespoke training options and of course, a
run through of the shutter options and pricing. I’m
reaching out to prospective clients and checking in
on our long-standing ones, offering extra support
when and however required.
I really enjoy building relationships with our
trade companies and seeing their businesses grow
and flourish. Whether it’s a quick site visit to advise
on design, or a chat about products and business
management over a coffee, it’s always great to put
faces to names and provide a really competitive
offering for our customers.
Our head offices are based on the south coast.
We can even see the sea out the windows, so a
swim is only ever 5 mins away! The Customer
Support Team are fantastic. Each of them has a real
wealth of knowledge. They’re excellent at solving
design problems and will find a solution for almost
all windows. Plus, they’re super friendly and always
on hand to support with online portal enquires
how our customer service stands out from the
crowd. It’s something we’re really proud of.
Taking stock
This year LSS
Lewens
Sonnenschutz-
Systeme GmbH &
Co. KG celebrates
its 25th
anniversary. Here
its managing
director takes stock
and offers insights
into the company’s
success story
In 1998, Hamburg entrepreneur Götz A. Lewens
founded LSS Lewens Sonnenschutz-Systeme
GmbH & Co. KG in Ludwigslust. Working with a
small team, Lewens built the company’s success on
the back of his extensive industry experience and a
keen instinct for what customers wanted. The
Lewens modular back bar awning system, Family,
with its high quality standard captured the spirit of
the times and is still part of the product range
today. Over the years, the product portfolio
expanded and in 2004 the Toscana model, one of
the first full cassette awnings produced by Lewens,
received the Aluminium Design Award. Following
on from this, the company developed and
produced façade and glass roof awnings, pergolas
and, since 2012, glass roof systems also. These have
likewise been recognised with a number of
accolades for design and technology. “The market
has changed; it has become much more diverse
and demanding,” says Philip Lewens, managing
director and son of the founder. “What was once a
purpose-built product, namely a crank-operated
awning to provide shade from the sun during the
warmer months of the year, is now frequently
called upon to facilitate outdoor living at home all
year round – for instance, with a glass roof and
automated blinds, often also solar-operated and
integrated into the home automation system.”
Quality and sustainability
Today, the Lewens-Markisen brand offers a
past, the company operates its own fully integrated
production process. Top-quality materials ensure
the robust character and long service life of the
products, while stringent testing guarantees that
they comply with or even surpass industry
standards.
they should also last for many years. Where
lasting, high-quality product is a good
decision. “We like our customers to be
confident that they are making a smart,
long-term investment when they choose
our awnings,” says Philip Lewens. “We strive
to exceed the expectations of our
customers by employing the latest
technologies and materials in the
development and manufacture of our
products.”
Positano pergola
The new weatherproof pergola Positano,
which comes onto the market this year, has
also been designed with the latest trends and
customer wishes in mind. The pergola awning
received recognition back at the prototype
stage in 2022 with the European Product
Design Award (EPDA) for best product
design. Available in sizes of up to six metres
wide and five metres in depth, and with a
waterproof cover, this awning affords variable
weather protection for generously
dimensioned patio areas. The maximum width
is achieved here without the use of
intermediate rafters. Two fabric grades of
different texture with a waterproof coating
are offered for the awning, while highprecision
toothed belt technology is used to
ensure smooth extension and retraction and
for tensioning the fabric panels. As with the
manufacturer’s Murano glass roofs, the roof
pitch is infinitely adjustable. Rainwater is
drained via the side rafters and rain gutter
invisibly down the inside of the supports. The
Positano is equipped as standard with a
motor drive; radio remote control and the
possibility of integration into the home
automation system are optional features,
while LED strips can also be integrated into
the transoms.
Proven components and construction
technology from Lewens glass roofs in the
Murano series were used in the
development of the pergola awning. As a
result, the Positano awning can be
combined with additional products from
this model range, such as Glissando sliding
glass elements and Finestra fixed glazing.
Furthermore, the vertical awnings of the
Micro series form the perfect complement
to it.
New developments
Another new development is a support
frame that enables awnings, pergolas and
glass roofs to be erected free-standing on
both sides without a wall. The maximum
width of the unit is up to 7 metres,
depending on wind pressure and snow
loads.
The Murano Modulare glass roof, which
features special configurations such as
chimney openings and sections extending
around corners of 90 to 135 degrees, is still in
the development phase. The maximum depth
of the glass roof in this case is 5 metres.
A reason to celebrate
Products, employees and customers, says
Philip Lewens, are the basis of the
company's success and growth over the
past 25 years. They are fruits of our mutual
commitment. The Lewens family and team
would like to thank everyone involved and
invite employees, customers and partners to
a big anniversary party in autumn, at the
end of the season.
SOLAR SHADING
Solar gains
Stuart Dantzic
managing director,
Caribbean Blinds,
looks at the
importance of
solar shading
The earth’s climate is rapidly changing, with
temperatures rising by an average of 0.08°C
per decade since 1880. According to data
collected by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 2022 was
the sixth warmest year on record, with climate
experts predicting that 2023 will be even hotter.
According to the World Economic Forum, when
heatwaves occur “without any shades or ventilation,
you’ll quickly be in danger zone” – further proving
that now is the time to take action through
legislative measures to make buildings more climate
resilient in preventing overheating.
The solution: External
shading
As the sun is not static, a dynamic solution is
required to adapt to the changing ambient
conditions, preventing unwanted solar heat gain
during the summer months and allowing free solar
gain when required in the winter.
New research shows that passive cooling
techniques such as shading and natural ventilation
can not only prevent homes and workplaces from
overheating but also reduce the load on air
conditioning – a proven contributor to CO2
emissions and greenhouse gases – by as much as
80%, delivering a number of economic and
environmental benefits including reduced energy
costs and safe, sustainable buildings that are
comfortable and healthy for their occupants.
Awnings
Not a new concept to the UK, awnings were
used on elaborate glass shop frontages in the
1800’s before air conditioning was invented as a
way to passively cool the interior of buildings whilst
also protecting goods from the damaging effects of
the sun. Today, awnings are growing in popularity
because not only do they offer additional privacy –
particularly in built-up areas – but they serve two
main functions essential for a healthy living
environment.
Firstly, they provide instant shade from sunlight;
both heat and glare (bright light), outstanding UV
protection (typically 95% minimum UV block) and
shelter from unexpected rain showers. Secondly,
awnings provide a much-needed cooling effect to
the indoor room adjacent to where they are
positioned, both during the summer and winter
months. As a result, they ensure a comfortable
indoor living space, eliminating any bright light to
prevent glare, all whilst filtering damaging UV rays
to stop fixtures and furnishings from fading.
24 Blinds & Shutters • ISSUE THREE 2023
continues on page 26

SOLAR SHADING
External blinds
Automatic outdoor blinds ensure a
thermally and visually comfortable indoor
environment with minimum energy
demand on any installed heating and
cooling systems, reducing energy costs and
CO2 emissions as a result.
Unique perforated solar controlled
fabrics can provide an evenly distributed
natural light source whilst maintaining the
view and connection to the outside. This
quick solution can help override high levels
of insulation and glazing, minimising any
unwanted solar heat gain by averting the
sun’s rays from reaching the glass and
keeping buildings cool.
Glazing vs shading
Large expanses of glazing such as
rooflights, panoramic windows and
sliding/folding doors help blur the
boundaries between inside and out by
flooding a room with natural light and
creating a feeling of endless space and
openness – all whilst emitting free solar
gain to passively warm a building in the
colder months.
However, despite these benefits, the
combination of extensive glazing and high
levels of insulation coupled with a warming
climate is resulting in buildings severely
overheating. Although this is primarily the
case in the summer months, it also happens
during the winter too, with indoor
temperatures rising to uncomfortable and
unsafe levels that put occupant health at
risk.
Adjustable solar shading in the form of
awnings, external blinds and even
bioclimatic pergolas have an important part
to play in saving energy and helping our
climate journey. Not only do they allow us
to control the amount of sunlight in our
inside spaces but also help to prevent glare.
Additionally, smart solar shading can help
intelligently manage heat and light for the
highest levels of energy efficiency, improving
comfort and ultimately cooling our planet.
To conclude, whilst the solution to
combat the issue of overheating buildings
already exists to an extent, solar shading
products need to be designed and
incorporated from the outset. We need to
begin to opt for alternatives to solar
control glass (that doesn’t prevent solar
heat gain) or air conditioning that is “energy
hungry”.
Every measure needs to be taken to
address the importance of external shading
during the design stage of any building in
order to ensure its energy efficiency is at its
highest and to prevent the growing number
of eco and ultra-modern glass properties
from turning into unhabitable
‘greenhouses’.
End glare and
enhance natural light
tensARC says sail
blinds can target
problem areas.
Glazed roofs let in the sun and the beauty
of the outdoors. Too often though they
bring excessive glare and intense heat
gain. People find themselves shutting the blinds or
moving their seat to cool off and avoid discomfort.
Indoor sail blinds are a simple, fixed, roof blind
solution that handles requirements across all
weather conditions.
Traditional blinds are designed to hang under the
force of gravity in vertical windows, so, they don’t
naturally work for roofs. Sail blinds were developed
for glazed roofs specifically and defy gravity with
ease, providing simple and easy installation. With a
sail blind, the tensioned fabric of the sail is selfsupporting
at any orientation. When coupled with
a light-filtering fabric, solar control can be targeted,
translucent, attractive, and easy. In this way, sail
blinds are a practical, low maintenance option for
any glazed roof.
Targeted. Sail blinds stretch and curve to block
even the severest bands of sunlight and help
mediate heat. After reviewing the sun’s direction, a
set of key dimensions, and a few other details, it is
possible to tailor sail blinds to meet the precise
requirements of each space. A simple, taut sail
solution can lower cooling costs – with up to 72%
heat reduction.
Translucent. Proper positioning and a specialty
fabric cut glare 100%, yet light filters through.
Achieving more than 20% light transmission makes
buildings more liveable. Translucence also saves on
costs from artificial lighting, while the space retains
soft, mixed natural light and a connection to the
outdoors.
Attractive. Sail blinds prove that solar control can
have a “light touch”: introducing simple, elegant
forms into a commercial space. Sails are a
transitional element, suiting a range of styles from
traditional to ultra-modern. Available in neutrals
and accent hues, they can be discreet, add mood
or subtle interest, or insert a pop of colour.
Easy. Every sail blind is machine washable and
comes with a 7-year warranty. Some photos, a few
precise dimensions, and less than an hour online
with a designer produces a bespoke, cost-effective
solution for any glazed roof.
Sustainable cooling
Harol launches
Coolscreen Solar:
sustainable cooling
powered by the sun
With Coolscreen Solar, sun protection
specialist Harol provides a perfect, fully
solar-powered screen that offers full
control of your sunlight all year round. Coolscreen
Solar is a feat of engineering and aesthetic
ingenuity that cools buildings the natural way. It also
has an extraordinarily sleek, minimalist and
sustainable design.
The new Harol Coolscreen Solar combines
100% green energy with minimalist design and
high-tech innovation. The solar-powered screen is
mounted entirely on to the window's exterior and
is therefore suitable for both existing windows and
new buildings. No invasive construction work
required. It is the perfect solution for houses and
apartments as well as residential care facilities and
hospitality establishments.
"Global warming has made overheating a real
risk. Screens can control sunlight in an energyefficient
way and keep indoor temperatures
comfortable in summer. And in winter, they offer
extra insulation and free solar power. Coolscreen
Solar is part of our new generation of screens that
keep out the sun in an energy-efficient way based
on a very clever, sustainable design." - CEO Annick
Draelants
100% sustainable
Coolscreen Solar is powered by a discreet solar
panel and a powerful 2.2 Ah battery. Even when
facing north or on days with less sunshine, the
screen still works thanks to its large battery
storage capacity (3 hours of charging time – when
fully charged, the screen can open and close twice
a day for 30 days).
Sustainable design principles were key from the
very initial stages and Harol uses a minimum
SOLAR SHADING
Slim design
The battery is entirely concealed in a
stylish, cubist aluminium case, which is
available in two sizes. Together with the
extra narrow guide, invisible weld seam and
bottom rail that disappears completely into
the case, this creates a sleek and minimalist
design that suits any architecture style. The
screwless system of the latest generation of
Coolscreens with minimum number of
parts that click into place contributes to this
clean look.
Sleek and silent
Harol perfected its zip guide profile
consisting of a polymer co-extrusion for its
Coolscreen Solar. This always keeps the
fabric at the perfect tension, even in
extreme temperatures. The slim bottom rail
was made heavier to keep the fabric
perfectly tensioned horizontally as well. The
screen's operation is silent thanks to Harol's
optimised X-glide technology, a profile that
completely neutralises any resonance inside
the case.
AWNINGS
An accentuated effect
The "MX-2 colour"
highlights its design
to good effect with
the use of colour
Its shape is filigree with pleasant curves. Its
technology sophisticated. With ten new colour
combinations for the top cassette profile and
the frame, markilux now wants to emphasise the
modern design of its "MX-2“ even more in the
"colour" version.
As with a painting, which is given the finishing
touch with a finely executed brushstroke, markilux
knows how to emphasise the design of its awnings
by making use of a specific effect. And that is also
the case with the relatively new cassette awning
"MX-2“. Because, from this year, it is now also
available as the "MX-2 colour" in ten new colour
combinations.
Top cassette profile in a
different colour
The top cassette profile has a different colour
from the awning frame. The combinations are made
up of the seven standard awning colours and three
additional special colours. In line with this, the
manufacturer recommends two fabrics each per
colour combination from the new "collection one".
However, end consumers are also completely at
liberty to choose their own fabric pattern and
colour. “The top cassette profile in a different colour
emphasises the rounded shape of the sides. It is a
very subtle effect that catches the eye,” explains
Michael Gerling, Director of R&D and Production,
going on to say that they wanted to focus especially
on the design. In addition, the various options were
intended to make it easier for the end consumer to
make a coherent colour choice.
Design as a style element in
its own right
“We already had the idea for a two-colour
awning body during the development phase.
However, you can’t always realise everything
straight away. Some things need a little more time
to mature until they work the way we would like
them to,” says Mr Gerling. This is often the case,
especially with elaborate colour coatings. “As the
technology we employed is very reliable and has
already proven itself over a number of years in a
different model, we were able to concentrate on
the design when it came to the 'MX-2'. That’s why
we continued to work on the colour details of the
design components after the market launch,” the
Director of R&D and Production adds. Because,
with its clear, slightly rounded shape, the model is
intended to be both an integral part of the
architecture and a stylistic element in its own right.
Everything about the awning expresses quality and
is geared towards a lifestyle with high aesthetic
standards. “We also want to meet this demand
with the new colour concept in our product
portfolio. Moreover, end consumers should have
the option of giving their awning as individual a
look as possible,” Michael Gerling sums up.
A brand of

AWNINGS
Two-tone harmony
The “MX-4” by
markilux combines
futuristic design
with modern LED
technology
With the “MX-4” markilux remains true
to its aim of developing product
design that expresses itself fluently.
Connected by simple, clean lines, the look of the
new awning is somewhere between round and
angular. Furthermore, with its modern LED
technology, it opens up a new perspective on
coloured lighting scenarios for the patio.
Sophisticated design is a ‘must’ for every
markilux product explains Michael Gerling,
Director of R&D and Production. “It is the
‘leitmotif’ that runs through our range. And
something that is made particularly clear in the
MX product family,” he adds. It comes as no
surprise that the new cassette awning “MX-4” also
continues along this course with its avant-garde
look.
Appearance with vibrant
contrasts
“With this product, we once again wanted to
combine shape and colour in an exciting way. The
starting point for this is a conically shaped cassette
that stands out conspicuously on the façade. We
have emphasised this further with an allround
styling panel,” says Mr Gerling. It closes the housing
effectively at the front and continues round into
the end caps. The styling panel and cassette can be
combined in all seven of the manufacturer’s
standard colours and also with individual nonstandard
colours for the cassette. This creates a
vibrant contrast and underlines the shape that is
somewhere between round and angular. But as if
that wasn’t enough, the subject of colour in the
“MX-4” is played with using another creative
instrument – the design of its lighting.
Large selection of LED
lighting options
The first thing you notice in this respect is the
wide range of LED lighting that is available for this
model. The dimmable LED Line is a well-known
product from the company. It is recessed in a
multi-functional groove on the underside of the
cassette. From May, there will be a further option
available making it possible to mount up to six
swivelling and rotating, newly developed spots on
the inside of the front profile depending on the
awning size.
Coloured lighting scenario
Michael Gerling explains that the special lighting
technology is a genuine highlight. It can be used to
change the colour of the LED elements to suit the
mood and occasion as, alongside normal, warm
white light sources, they are also available in RGB
warm white. They can either be operated using
the in-built io radio technology with a hand-held
transmitter or using special apps from the smart
systems “Philips Hue” or Somfy “TaHoma Switch”.
Designer awnings for every taste
Awnings from
markilux offer a
wide range in terms
of shape, colour
and function
With its product portfolio, markilux
offers top-quality design that is in
demand all over the world. There are
awnings to suit every architectural style and they
have already won multiple design awards. Their
powerful expressive presence is how the brand
has made a name for itself over the years.
Designer awnings from manufacturer markilux
are intended to be perceived as an individual style
element on the façade of a building, whether in an
aesthetic, discreet or self-confident look. The
shapes vary from angular to round, from
streamlined to organically curved. The simple
elegance of the design language has won many a
prize over the years, such as the “iF Award”, the
“Red Dot Design Award” and the “German
Design Award”. The aim of these “Made in
Germany” products has always been to suit both
an urban lifestyle and a classic living style.
Awnings with the personal
touch
“The timeless look of our awnings and the
sheer variety on offer is designed to suit every
form of architecture and every taste. This is
possible, because the products can be customised
by means of front styling panels featuring special
colour effects, with metallic lacquers or by using
different colour combinations with matching cover
recommendations,” says Klaus Wuchner, Director
of Sales and Marketing, adding that this underlines
the modern design, giving the products a personal
touch. The awning and the building thus have an
attractive overall look.
Light and design in harmony
Mr Wuchner explains: “It is precisely this
diversity in our product range that means our
products are in such demand, not just at home
but also abroad.” The awnings can also be given a
particular emphasis with lighting systems in the
form of LED Spots or LED Lines. They can be
attached to different awning components and
accentuate features of the façade and cover
beautifully. The offer ranges from atmospherecreating
ambient lighting and coloured lighting
displays to separate wall lights in the same design
as the awning or backlit styling panels. Together
with the new fabric patterns in “collection one”,
the result is an overall harmonious look combining
form, colour, light and design which embellishes
both house and patio.
What’s wood
got to do with it?
S:CRAFT says there
are alternatives in
the shutter market
If you could have wood for the price of MDF,
wouldn’t you? There are two answers to this
question, and both of them are effectively “no”
Firstly, nothing in our range is purely MDF.
Antigua is more than an MDF, it is a composite
product, and in all S:CRAFT materials, it is
referred to as “Engineered Wood” – and this is
not a fudge. Parts of Antigua are indeed made
from the very best quality, most environmentally
friendly MDF.
It is among the most eco-friendly materials
available, wood composite production involves
very little waste, with up to 95% of every tree
utilised. Made from the wood of rapid-growth
trees, Antigua shutters enable tree
replenishment at an extremely accelerated rate.
The unique engineered stiles are reinforced by
laminated veneer lumber (LVL) inserts made up of
multiple layers of hardwood which are bonded
together with pressure, heat, and polymer. The LVL
inserts strengthen the stiles providing long-term
durability and stability for the shutter panels. Our
manufacturer moved from making a solid wood
shutter to focussing on the engineered wood
product for quality reasons.
This takes us to the second answer –
Engineered wood is better 85% of the time. It’s
tougher, it closes better, it is warp resistant, and
the polypropylene wrap is more damage
resistant, more fade resistant, and more moisture
resistant. Norman® is our manufacturer's global
and vertically integrated retailer brand, so
confident are they in the bombproof nature of
these shutters, they offer a five-year no-quibble
guarantee in the Australian market, with all its
weather extremes.
There are many instances where you might
want to choose wooden shutters; large
installations, special shapes, stain finishes etc, and
of course damp environments call for ABS, but
where you can use Antigua, really, why wouldn’t
you? Nowhere, in any industry, is pure wood
used unless it’s absolutely integral to the product
– in cases where the emphasised grain finish was
required for example. Why would you buy
wood and then paint it white when there are
better materials? Nobody is making pure walnut
dashboards anymore.
Antigua shutters are primarily made from real
wood and are the real deal! They are not
pretending to be something else, they are
authentic, look beautiful, are stable, and most
importantly they will give your customers many
years of trouble-free operation and enjoyment.
On top of this, they are environmentally
friendly. All the wood products used to make
Antigua shutters are responsibly managed. They
are sustainable, recyclable, waste efficient, biodegradable,
and non-toxic. Our factory partner
in China is the only Asian manufacturer to
publish a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
report, a business model which takes account of
the environmental, social, and economic impacts
associated with business activities. Your customer
cares about this stuff, so we assure you that
when you sell Antigua, you can feel confident
you are selling the most popular, and most
proven shutter product on the market.
Produced by the best and most responsible
shutter manufacturer in the world, committed to
socially responsible processes in manufacturing
and forestry.
Opening the gates
Energy efficiency is
a trending topic in
door and gate
industry
The Doors/Gates area is a key pillar of R+T
and will once again find a home from 19 to
23 February 2024 in the Alfred Kärcher
Halle (Hall 8) and the Paul Horn Halle (Hall 10).
Numerous well-known companies will impress
visitors to the world's leading trade fair for roller
shutters, doors/gates and sun shading systems
with their innovative products and services, with
which the high requirements of the market can be
met. There is a demand for sustainable solutions
for the resource-friendly use of energy, in
particular.
"Our member companies can hardly wait to
showcase their innovations at the upcoming R+T
2024", reports Kai-Uwe Grögor, President of BVT
– Verband Tore (National Federation of Door and
Gate Manufacturers). "Due to the current
situation in relation to climate change and the
higher energy prices, the topic of energy saving
also plays a decisive role for the door and gate
industry." To that effect, visitors can already look
forward to diverse, user-friendly solutions. "The
insulation of building components is extremely
important overall – and, by extension, the doors
and gates", adds Kai-Uwe Grögor. This is
particularly interesting for solutions that are
integrated in the thermal building envelope.
Optimised opening and closing times also play a
key role when it comes to avoiding energy losses.
"A lot has also been accomplished here in recent
years", says Kai-Uwe Grögor. It also gets exciting in
the Smart Home area with whose help
doors/gates can be used very comfortably.
Time is energy
Alpha Deuren is one of the exhibitors that has
significantly optimised the opening and closing
times of their doors/gates. The Dutch company
now also carries, for example, high-speed doors
plastic curtain with speeds of up to 2 m/s. In
times of increasing responsibility and not
least high energy prices, more and more
companies from industry and logistics are
relying on this energy-efficient and timesaving
solution. Because especially in autumn
and winter external doors and gates that are
left open for too long can become cost
traps for companies. Cold air gets in while
warm air escapes and the heating starts up
to balance the temperature.
The special doors and gates comprise a
very sturdy plastic curtain and drive and
control technology which permits high
opening cycles as well as opening and closing
speeds. There is also a choice of protective
covers made from plastic, galvanised steel
and stainless steel. Like traditional roller
shutters, the high-speed doors and gates are
rolled up on a shaft at the lintel. They open
and close automatically, are safe for users
and space-saving and quiet. Another
advantage is the attractive priceperformance
ratio as well as the broad
application area. For instance, the high-speed
doors and gates are used not only in
industry and logistics, but also in the
pharmaceuticals and chemicals industry, the
automotive industry, retail, as well as the
food industry. The company stocks a
customised solution for almost every
situation.
Depending on the type, the high-speed
doors and gates are available up to a
maximum width of 6000 millimetres and
with areas from 9 to 36 square metres. The
portfolio ranges from high-speed roller
doors and gates specially for the indoor area
to high-speed roller doors and gates for the
indoor and outdoor area through to robust
high-speed folding doors and gates which
Energy-saving door
drives
Door drives have a decisive impact on
whether a door is energy-efficient or not.
The exhibitor Berner Torantriebe has dealt
intensively with this topic and in a sample
calculation indicates that the installation of
power-saving drives is more worthwhile than
ever before. Apart from the sustainability
aspect, the main focus of the calculation is
ultimately more and more on the costs of
the day-to-day operation.
"We compiled the calculation using the
example of our GA203 door drive", reports
Frank Kiefer, managing director of Berner
Torantriebe. The sample calculation
determined that a traditional door drive
with transformer and power consumption of
roughly 6 watts generated annual operating
costs of at least 20 euros." The GA203
energy-optimised system from the
Rottenburg-based company gets by with less
than two euros per year with the same
number of movement cycles.
The other door drives of the
manufacturer are also now completely
designed for economical energy
consumption. "Swing and sliding door drives
in our DA and C series work with powersaving
switching power supplies, which
consume less than 0.5 watts in standby
mode. If light is required for the operation of
the door or gate, we only use efficient LED
technology", adds Frank Kiefer. The power
requirement of a door or gate also greatly
depends on the ease of operation. The
materials used - like aluminium and PA6
plastic for the rollers of the entrance gates
of Berner - guarantee optimal functioning,
durability and thus also sustainability.
International know-how
The ACMI (Assocostruttori Chiusure
Meccanismi Italia) will also be at R+T 2024
in Stuttgart. Nicola Fornarelli, President of
the ACMI: "Thanks to the Italian commercial
agency ITA, our association was able to start
an export promotion project for small and
medium-sized companies." The ACMI joint
pavilion was at the world's leading trade fair
for roller shutters, doors/gates and sun
shading systems for the first time in 2015
with eight companies on 100 square metres.
In 2024 twenty of the member companies
will welcome visitors on approximately 1100
square metres. "Our partnership with
Landesmesse Stuttgart is extremely relevant
for us from a strategic perspective. For our
member companies R+T is definitely the
most important trade fair in our industry",
adds Nicola Fornarelli. "All exhibitors of the
ACMI pavilion are really looking forward to
presenting their latest products in the area
of doors and gates live to the expert public."
Interior trends
Laura Burnett from
Feather & Black
reveals five top
interior trends
destined to be
staples of bedroom
design in the
coming months
Our bedrooms are a sanctuary, a precious
space where we relax and take care of
ourselves. To create a harmonious,
aesthetically pleasing, and practical haven,
bedroom expert Laura Burnett from Feather &
Black reveals five top interior trends destined to
be staples of bedroom design in the coming
months.
1.Wooden accents
Rustic décor is a simple yet classic style choice
for bedrooms. Much loved by interior enthusiasts,
Pinterest searches for ‘rustic bedroom’ have risen
by 203% since December 2022.
Wooden accents in the bedroom are
wonderfully elegant and inviting, and it doesn’t get
any more luxurious than rustic weathered oak.
With gentle neutrality, weathered oak is the
perfect choice for unassuming sophistication.
Whether you fall in love with a beautiful,
weathered oak bed or an utterly stylish bedside,
wooden accents add refinement to any rustic
bedroom.
2. Farmhouse style
The farmhouse aesthetic encompasses the
rustic, wooden style and brings it to life.
Worldwide Pinterest searches for ‘farmhouse
décor’ have risen 63% over the past three months,
highlighting the growing popularity of the style.
The rise in interest has been attributed to the
blend of a rustic style and contemporary beauty
that farmhouses offer. To incorporate this style into
your living space, start with soft and light tones,
whether this is for your curtains, a rug or carpet,
or bedding and compliment them with darker,
wooden tones for elements of furniture.
3. Rattan
The rattan style has been steadily growing in
recent months, with searches for ‘rattan furniture’
rising 316%. Whether it’s a side table, bed or
wardrobe, rattan products offer a natural texture
that can elevate your space. The warm and soft
tones offer a sense of comfort that makes it a
popular option for many.
4. Accent wall
Splashes of colour, a beautifully stencilled design,
and ornate wall panelling – indulging with an
accent wall in your bedroom has enduring appeal.
Interest in accent walls has risen by 69% over the
last three months on Pinterest, in fact.
Accent walls allow you to express your truest
style without committing to a full transformation.
Wonderful innovations in this trend include almost
infinite configurations of wall panelling, mouldings,
and cladding to suit any number of interior styles.
Why not take the opportunity to add built-in
bedside conveniences? Mood lighting or useful
USB ports add a touch of opulence to your
bedtime routine, without the worry of unsightly
wires. Once the panelling has taken shape, drench
it in irresistibly cosy vanilla tones to add dimension
and warmth.
5. 1970s style
Oh, the 1970s. The resurgence in this retro
trend doesn’t stop at clothing and fashion –
interiors are firmly on the rise too. 1970sbedroom-related
terms have seen a 78% increase
according to Pinterest Trends.
Succulent earth tones are an incredibly
important element of this trend, particularly when
placed alongside coloured patterns and textures.
Muted oranges, rich greens and warm browns
evoke instant nostalgia and pair beautifully with
tactile wooden accents such as rattan or shiplap.
Combine these warm toasty elements with
fringed curtains, cushions or lampshades, and
weave in touches of gold for unbridled 70s flair.
Bienvenue au soleil
Embrace the
outdoors this
summer with Soleil,
Chase Erwin’s new
outdoor collection
The summer season calls for outdoor living
and Chase Erwin’s latest collection SOLEIL
is designed for alfresco living. The new range
is Chase Erwin’s first outdoor collection featuring
luxurious fabrics designed with both breezy
summer style and seasonal functionality in mind.
The SOLEIL collection draws inspiration from
relaxed summer days, sipping cocktails on a sundrenched
terrace on the French Riviera. Featuring
three timeless designs from classic stripes to
geometric patterns, in pops of fresh summer
colours.
Spritz – is a striking geometric design, which
features bold blocks of colour on a textured
background. A versatile choice, the geometric
pattern fabrics can be used in retro, mid-century
schemes or in contemporary projects, depending
on the colour palette chosen.
Bellini – is a plain, yet sophisticated, textured
weave providing a neutral base which can be
coordinated with ease.
Cosmopolitan – is a contemporary stripe design.
An eye-catching design with elegant, contrasting
patterns to add interest.
All three designs in the SOLEIL collection are
available in an irresistible palette of seven, sundrenched
colours. Choose from zesty citrus shades,
Lime and Citron, or the more calming Pebble for a
more neutral colourway. Calming blues Opal and
Cobalt draw inspiration from clear blue summer
skies and refreshing dips in the azure sea. For a
playful pop of bright summer colour, choose vivid
fruity shades Nectarine and Berry. All the colours
are designed to be easily co-ordinated, to create
layers of pattern, texture and colour.
The SOLEIL collection is made from 100%
recycled Polypropylene with a 30,000 Martindale. It
has been designed for outdoor living, made from
high-performance yarn that is inherent with antimicrobial,
stain resistant, fire-retardant qualities. It is
ideal for outdoor use, being water resistant and
graded a light fastness of 6+, ensuring it is well
suited for ever-changing seasonal conditions. The
fabric is suitable for upholstery and cushions,
making it the perfect choice for transforming any
outdoor space into a stylish sanctuary.
Sustainable future
How Louvolite's
Carnival Blackout
Fabrics are saving
the environment
As a window blind manufacturer, you may be
wondering how you can contribute towards
a more sustainable future. Luckily, innovative
companies such as Louvolite are leading the way in
producing eco-friendly window blind fabrics. Their
Carnival and Carnival blackout ranges are made with
100% recycled content and recycled yarn, making
them ideal for those who are seeking to reduce their
carbon footprint.
Firstly, let's take a closer look at the Carnival
blackout fabric. This range can provide complete
privacy and light control, whilst also providing
insulation to help reduce energy consumption. This
means that your customers can create a improved
temperature-controlled environment, all whilst
lowering their energy bills and carbon emissions.
But how is this possible? The Carnival and Carnival
Blackout range is produced using reclaimed liquid
that would have otherwise been discarded, making it
an eco-friendly alternative to traditional window
blind fabrics. Furthermore, Louvolite's commitment
to using recycled yarn in this range reduces the
amount of waste and energy needed in the
production process.
The Carnival range also uses 100% recycled
content in its production. This range is perfect for
creating a colourful and sustainable interior design
scheme. By using these eco-friendly fabrics, your
customers can showcase their commitment to
sustainability and social responsibility.
As well as being good for the environment, these
fabrics don't compromise on quality. The Carnival
and Carnival blackout ranges are easy to clean and
maintain, meaning they are durable and long-lasting.
This is important to consider when stocking
products, as it means customers can rely on your
products for years to come, reducing the number of
replacements required.
In addition to this, it's also worth noting that
incorporating Louvolite's eco-friendly fabrics into
your stock can appeal to ethical and socially
conscious consumers. There is a growing demand for
sustainable products, and by stocking and promoting
these fabrics, you can differentiate your business from
competitors whilst being part of the wider
movement towards a greener future.
In conclusion, it's clear that Louvolite's Carnival and
Carnival blackout ranges should be a part of your
stock. These fabrics are not only environmentally
friendly, but they also offer insulation, privacy, and are
easy to maintain. By promoting these eco-friendly
ranges, you can appeal to socially responsible
customers whilst contributing towards a more
sustainable future. As a window blind manufacturer, it's
important to be aware of the impact your products
have and by investing in products such as Louvolite's
Carnival range, you're taking another step towards a
more eco-conscious future.
ROLLER BLINDS
Roll on the summer
Louvolite says
roller blinds are
the perfect choice
this summer
When it comes to window treatments,
roller blinds have retained their place
as the most popular choice among
homeowners everywhere. They are convenient,
easy to use, and provide many different levels of
privacy and light control. As window blind suppliers,
you of course want to offer your customers
products that cater to the latest trends and
demands in the industry. Louvolite roller blinds tick
all the boxes in that regard. So just why are roller
blinds the smart choice for homeowners, and why
do the quality of fabrics, prints, designs and
seasonal colours play such an important role.
A Diverse Range of Shades
and Fabrics
One of the biggest reasons roller blinds are so
popular is due to the vast array of colours, designs
and prints they come in. Whether your customer is
looking for a subtle, understated shade such as
Louvolite’s Dawn and Tiree ranges or something
bold such as Carnival and Birdsong, then roller
blinds offer a large range of options. The quality of
the fabric is also crucial, as it determines both the
look and durability of the product.
The Benefits of Textured
Fabric
Textured fabrics have emerged as a big trend in
the world of roller blinds. Not only do they add
depth and dimension to a room while making a
real statement, but they are also functional, helping
to keep rooms cooler through the coming summer
months. Textured fabrics such as Banbury, Hampton
and Monterey are extremely popular fabric ranges
this season.
The Use of Laminate Fabric
Laminate fabric has been used in the production
of roller shades for some time now. They are
durable, easy to maintain and come in an
abundance of colours and textures such as Collina,
Crush and the ever-popular Shot Silk. However, it is
crucial to ensure that the laminate fabric used is of
a high quality and made from non-toxic materials.
All Louvolite’s laminates satisfy this prerequisite by
having Greenshield accreditation.
ROLLER BLINDS
Be Different and Impress
Your Friends
Roller blinds allow customers to be
creative and showcase their unique style
and personality. They can choose from a
range of designs, prints and seasonal colours
– from floral prints for the spring, to muted
tones for the winter. Azalea, Acacia, Fern and
Sweet Pea should come into consideration
here. As a window blind supplier, it is
important to have a diverse range of
products, including those that cater to
unconventional tastes.
Special Fabric Coatings
Many roller blind fabrics now come with
special coatings or treatments to enhance
their performance. Ultrafresh is an
antimicrobial treatment by Louvolite that
kills bacteria and fungus, making roller blinds
suitable for kitchens or other areas where
hygiene is important. SPC, or Solar
Performance Coating, is a fabric treatment
that reflects heat and UV rays, making it
perfect for south-facing windows or rooms
that get a lot of sun.
Flame Retardant Blinds
For commercial blinds, it is usually
required by law to have flame retardant
window coverings. Flame retardant roller
blinds have been treated with special
chemicals that prevent the fabric from
catching fire or spreading flames. Louvolite
offers many flame retardant options, so you
can choose from a wide range of styles and
colours.
Pollergen Technology
Allergy sufferers will be pleased to know
that there are roller blinds on the market
that are specially designed to reduce the
impact of pollen and other allergens.
Pollergen technology is a special coating that
captures and neutralizes pollen, making it
much easier for allergy sufferers to live
comfortably. This technology is applied to
Louvolite’s Carnival range, so with plenty of
colours to choose from, you don't have to
compromise on style.
Durability
Roller blinds are also known for their
durability. They are low-maintenance and
easy to operate, making them ideal for hightraffic
areas. Plus, they are a great option for
homes with children and pets as they are
less likely to become damaged as they can
be raised out of reach during the daytime.
Some great fabric choices for children’s
rooms would be Louvolite’s Planetarium,
Dinosaurs and ABC.
As a window blind supplier, offering
products that are on-trend, durable and
stylish is of paramount importance.
Louvolite roller fabrics tick all the boxes in
that regard. The diverse range of shades and
fabrics, the benefits of textured laminate
fabric, as well as being able to impress
friends with a range of unique designs,
colours and special coatings make it clear
that roller blinds are an excellent product to
consider offering to your customers. By
investing in high-quality fabrics, you can take
advantage of the latest trends in the home
decor industry and grow your business
accordingly.
VENETIAN
Making the right
impression
Customers love
venetian blinds, so
why not look at
faux wood
examples?
Customers love the functionality of a
venetian blind; they can easily be tilted
and opened for great light control and
privacy. However, the metal finish of the slats does
not suit every room style. For those looking for
the same functionality but a softer look, faux
wood venetian blinds can bridge this gap.
Faux Wood venetian blinds offer the beautiful
look of real wood, combined with all the benefits
of PVC. They are ideal for damp conditions with
their moisture resistant properties, and they are
also very easy to just wipe clean. This makes them
a stylish and practical solution for all interior styles.
Suitable for any room in the home, their
durable properties and ability to handle steam and
humidity makes them particularly ideal for
kitchens and bathrooms.
The Timber Impressions range from Stevens
offers a wide range of 13 faux wood colours for
your customers, all supplied as Made-to-Measure
blinds.
All of the colours are available in 50mm slat
widths, and the popular whites are available in
38mm as well. The Faux Wood blinds can be
made up to 2550mm wide, making them an easy
choice for most domestic settings. Being Fire
peace of mind.
Customers can finish the blinds to suit their
Sattler
selector
Sattler has launched a new Design Selector
Finding the perfect fabric
for an awning is
sometimes the most
difficult part of the sales process.
Sattler's Design Selector is here
to help.
Although the fabric of an
awning is a technical product,
the selection process is usually
purely aesthetic. Which colour?
Which stripe? Does the design
match my house?
Sattler's Design Selector is a
tool that has successfully
supported this selection process
for years. A new version has
been online since autumn 2022.
The colour of the façade can be
adapted to one's own situation,
a fabric comparison has been
integrated and a shadow
simulator makes it possible to
see the shadow cast by the
awning on one's own terrace.
Various system types and
regional landscape scenes have
also been added.
But not only the Design
Selector has been completely
revised, since 1 January there is
also a new sun protection
collection. New design lines, new
colours and above all the
collection book are combined
with the digital Design Selector
in an unprecedented way.
Integrate the Design Selector
now and take advantage of the
new version: suntex.sattler.com
WINDOWS
Window history
Blindshapers looks
at the history of
windows
Windows - no not the screen-based one
but the ones we look at and through
every day, bringing light and fresh air in,
keeping out the cold, wet and any draughts they are
clearly a huge invention and heritage for us all.
In medieval times here oiled parchment was used
so that some dim light could be allowed into a
home during the day or wooden shutters which
could close off an open hole window during the
night. The word window comes from the old Norse
word Vindanga with Vin meaning wind and danga
meaning eye The Romans were the first to have
glass in them about 2000 years ago and all were
fixed until the 15th century when the wealthy could
have casement frames in iron or wood so that they
could open them, at first only the bottom section
and later sash window frames were invented for the
Georgian and Victorian eras. The larger the windows
and therefore the wealthier the occupants were, so
during the 1700-1850 the infamous window tax was
introduced or as it was put then 'laying a duty on
windows or lights' This meant a large number of
these windows being blocked up or in-filled with
matching brickwork, many of which can still be seen
today on the upper stories of older properties, but
that was not all as the Government put an
additional tax or duty on the glass itself, which was
applied for around 100 years! from the mid 18th
Century further making windows an expensive
luxury. The effect of these unpopular decrees meant
that some rooms and people were denied precious
light and inlets of fresh air which was neither healthy
or desirable. This is where the term 'daylight
robbery' comes from although it does not appear in
print until much later for someone being robbed in
broad daylight rather than under cover of darkness.
Other window types that were invented included
casements that were hinged from the sides and
opening outwards and seen on early half timbered
properties, although in Europe many of these open
inwards so can cause problems to fit blinds to. Look
out too for the weavers windows in the upper sties
of terraced houses distinctively wide to allow
maximum light for the craftspeople. The 50mm
wood slat venetian blinds were first invented in
Persia and then the idea was taken up by the
merchants in Venice. Here in the England in 1769 a
gentleman by the name of Edward Bevan patented
their design and how much have these changed over
the years.
The choices we have for window furnishing today
is huge and have become a design focus to every
room in our homes and business premises. The
multiple shapes of window designed by Architects
can challenge any blind and curtain company to
come up with an effective option that solves all the
needs of the customer and these can be many. From
heat reduction and retention, light diffusion and
complete darkening, the knowledge that we now
have to retain to give confidence to the consumer
that we can assure them that their needs will be
met is enormous but we do all rise to this challenge
with the help of our suppliers technical
departments.
WINDOWS
Light fantastic
ID Systems looks at
the best ways to
create natural light
in your home
Home renovation has been increasing over
the last few years, hitting a four-year high
in 2022 with nearly half of Brits1 planning
to renovate, and more than half planning to
decorate.
One of the most popular renovation trends is
homeowners seeking to blur the line between
their home and garden, with the majority opting to
extend their kitchen and fit a large patio door out
to the garden.
This is also being combined with a desire to add
more natural light into homes, with people opting
for large swathes of glass to align with the
‘outdoor-indoor’ trend.
IDSystems, luxury glazing and bifold door
specialists, have detailed the best ways to add
create more natural light into your home:
Triple Height Glass
For the ultimate curb appeal, add these tripleheight
windows onto your home for not only a
great look, but also to create tonnes of natural light.
The art deco-style window in the image above is
also a popular trend, with the design mimicking that
of 20s art deco style.
With windows this high it helps to brighten
internal spaces, pulling in natural light even as the
sun lowers in the evenings.
Roof Lights
For an easy addition to your home and a simple
way to let more light in, consider roof lights in
different rooms of your home.
Whether your home has a pitched or a flat roof,
the minimalist design of these sky lights helps to
create natural light in even the smallest of spaces.
Sliding or Bifold Doors
Breaking down the divide between inside and
out and making the rooms of your home appear to
seamlessly connect with your patio or decking, has
been an increasing popular trend for those
renovating their homes.
One of best ways to achieve this is using bifold
or sliding doors – both of which will create tonnes
of natural light.
Sliding doors are perfect for larger spaces where
you can have minimal framing whilst maximising
the glass, and therefore the amount of natural light
pouring through. These will be the best option if
your view is your priority.
Bifold doors are the ultimate tool in ‘letting the
outside in’ due to how they open. Once you’ve
opened the doors fully you will have an almost
completely open space to make the most of your
outdoor space.
Picture Windows
Having windows in your home is essential, of
course, but extra attention can be given to the
styles of windows you choose for ones that create
that all important extra natural light.
Opting for picture windows can not only make a
statement, but also create tonnes of extra light
whilst framing a beautiful view of the outside.
Glass-to-Glass Windows
Take your windows to the next level and make
the most of the corners of your home, with
frameless glass corners – creating extra natural
light even in the smallest of corners.
These frames create a real ‘wow-factor’ in the
home, and combined with a place to sit can
become a tranquil area of the home where you
can soak in the views of the outside.
MARKETING
Keeping it natural
Interior design
experts reveal what
home changes can
boost your
motivation
Whether it’s to do well at work or to
work-out for summer, motivation is
what causes you to take action in
order to achieve your personal goal. Interior
design experts from Hovia have researched and
recommended top tips on how to change your
home up to gain more motivation.
Add more plants
Nature or elements that remind you of nature,
such as a plant wallpaper, can really add some
great benefits to your indoor space. The University
of Exeter have researched by bringing plant
elements into your daily life can massively boost
your wellbeing by 47%, creativity by 45% and
productivity by 38%. Other positive impacts also
include the reducing risk of psychiatric disorders
and reducing our cortisol levels, allowing better
recovery from stress.
Top tips for adding in more nature to your
home or office space is decorating your home or
office space with plants or building a plant shelf,
other ways to directly involve plants is featuring
fresh flowers in a vase. To add nature elements,
you can invest in natural furniture or add a nature
wallpaper feature wall.
Neutral room
There are many benefits to a good sleep such
as being more motivated, alert and boosted
immunity. In your bedroom create complete
darkness while you sleep to get a better sleeping
pattern and relaxation. UDesign stated that in the
UK a staggering 70% of us sleep less than 7 hours
per night, which is an important statistic as half an
hour less sleep than needed can be detrimental to
your health as it has a cumulative effect. Sleep
Foundation have researched that sleeping in
darkness can help stimulate the production of
melatonin which is a hormone that helps you fall
asleep quicker.
One of the best tips to getting a good
night's sleep is investing in blackout blinds,
shutters or curtains to create the darkest
bedroom possible. Picking a wallpaper or
paint colour that is a cool or neutral colour
like blues, greens and greys can reduce
your heart rate, lower your blood pressure
and slow down your breathing rate. To
create a more relaxing environment to
encourage sleep, use diffusers or essential
oils to fill your bedroom with smells like
lavender. In the summer months use a
quiet fan or wool duvet to prevent
overheating at night.
Reflective surfaces
Wherever and as much as possible, in
your home or office, turn off those
fluorescent lights and let in the natural
sunlight in through the windows. Dako
Windows researched that the exposure to
natural light helps our bodies not only
produce Vitamin D but also positively
effects circadian rhythms, sleeping patterns,
motivation and has proven to improve our
mood and happiness.
Hanging a mirror on a wall opposite a
window produces more light within the
room or painting/wallpapering your walls
and ceilings in white to brighten up the
room. Other tips include keeping your
windows clean to allow more light in and
by and organising your furniture, so it does
not block the windows. Another tip is to
use reflective surfaces such as glossy or
metal accent surfaces that will bounce the
light around the room.
Your own space
Updating an unused corner, to create a
new space for yourself is an easy and
satisfying way update to your room, and it
will give you a designated space to unwind.
For example, using this space for a yoga or
meditation area can manage your stress,
reduce negative emotions, increase
creativity, also motivate you to adapt a daily
habit.
You can design a new environment
through different decorations and can
separate the room by trying a new calming
wallpaper or paint colour. An alternative is
investing in a room separator, to really give
your corner a new space to relax in.
Keeping the space tidy and clutter free will
also keep you less stressed and more
productive. A tip to incorporate mood
lighting is a great way to create a relaxing
atmosphere.
Consider a view
In your office or home, try to get a good
and unobstructed view of some form of
nature or nature experience. According to
Chromogenics, it has proven to have
positive health effects such as being more
creative, energised, and productive. It is
also has been researched that you are less
likely to take sick days from work.
You can design your space with a view
by creating one with a photographic or
nature inspired art prints or choosing a
picturesque landscape wallpaper, it’s great
to add in hanging plants around your
window, which also brings the benefits of
bringing in more plants indoors.
Crank it up
New additions to
Senses and Mirage
give buyers more
options
New additions to the Senses Roller and
Mirage blinds, are the Crank and
Coupling systems. The Senses Crank
system is a child safe design with a removable or
fixed option for the crank rod. The fixed option
allows the crank rod to remain in place, while the
removable option allows the same rod to be used
to operate several blinds which is ideal in a contract
environment. The metal crank handle comes with a
folding design and up to 4m in length.
The multi-directional drive joint allows for 15
degrees of install tolerance in any direction
between drive & tube. The blind remains secured in
place once installed with the locking pin end.
Its sturdy metal design is built for smooth and
easy operation, even at max weight capacity of
8.5kg.
The Senses Coupling system brings the ability to
drive two or more blinds together, at the same rate,
using a single control method. It can be used with
Chain-Op, Powershade Motors or Crank drive
controls.
The aligner has 45 adjustment teeth providing
complete control over the level each blinds bottom
bar sits. The 30mm fabric to gap distance between
coupled blinds is smaller than using back to back
brackets giving a better finish for the customer.
Again, the multi-directional drive joint allows for
15 degrees of install tolerance in any direction
between aligner and tube.
Coupled blinds of the same drop will operate at
the same rate and you can couple as many blinds as
necessary, up to the weight capacity of the selected
control method.
Both the Crank and Coupling systems work
within the Fascia, Mounting Profile or a Standard Fit
giving maximum flexibility. They are both compatible
with 40 and 48mm tubes.
• Improved reliability due to Bluetooth
technology
• Increased precision of blind positioning
• More insight for remote troubleshooting, with
optimised two-way communication
• Can be set up with mobile data connection, so
you don’t have to use customers’ internet
• Generation 3 can be setup on your device then
transferred to the homeowner, making setup easier
than ever and can be done without the consumer
there.
• Reimagined hardware
• Versatile and suited to projects big or small: a
single system for 1-100+ products
• Huge advancements to the Remote Connect
feature, with increased control
• Compatible with the leading home automation
and voice activation systems
Luxaflex training manager Simon Browne
explains: “Our ever-popular PowerView Automation
system means homeowners can have their blinds
work around them; opening automatically to wake
them with the morning light, partially closing during
the day to protect furniture from the harsh midday
sun, and closing in the evening to protect privacy
and promote rest and relaxation.
“Ongoing investment in research and
development means our bespoke technology has
continued to evolve over time so that it is now
even simpler and easier to use and install.
“One of the major benefits of the updated
system is the fact that our dealers can access the
tech, diagnose any issues and offer support
remotely should it be needed, thanks to the
system’s optimised two-way communication.
“We’re very proud of this technology and its
versatile nature, which means it is compatible with
an array of smart home systems.
“Its primary purpose is to make homeowners’
lives easier, but we’re committed to ensuring it does
the same for installers too.”
Motoring ahead
Motorisation is
now a must have
for consumers as
Blinds & Shutters
found out
Motorisation is a hot topic! Building on the
popularity of this control option, we have
lots of features across the Powershade
motors for Roller, Mirage, Venetian, Pleated &
Roman blinds.
Powershade blinds are child safe by design,
meaning they have no hanging operating cords or
chains in the home. They are also a great control
option for harder to reach blinds where
conventional chain operation may not be possible.
We are pleased to offer you a quality product at
a competitive price point. With smooth operation
and key benefits, we believe this is the best
motorised system for your customers in the
window blind market.
The improved, quieter operation means your
customers can have a motorised blind that’s
smooth to use, and has a reduced noise level giving
them a better user experience in the home.
Our motors offer consistent rise and close speed
which means when you’re operating 2 or more
blinds on the same remote with the same drop,
they can move up and down at the same speed
giving a uniform, professional finish.
The soft start/stop feature lets the blind move off
and stop gently, giving the feeling of a quality, luxury
product which is smooth and slick to operate. We
also offer a 2 year warranty on motors for peace of
mind.
Did you know our Powershade motors are also
compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home and
Siri Shortcuts to allow your customers to voice
control their blinds – amazing!
The new Powershade motors can be used with
our Senses Roller, Mirage, Venetian & Pleated as well
as Roman blinds for the ultimate stylish blind.
Somfy leads the charge
New magnetic
charging
accessories bring
convenience to
users for charging
Somfy V2 Li-ion
Embedded Motors
and Li-ion External
Battery Packs
Somfy has launched magnetic charging options
for its V2 Li-ion Embedded Motors and Li-ion
External Battery Pack.
The new accessories include an adaptor cable for
use with the traditional V2 Li-ion motors and
external Li-ion battery pack. A rigid extension cable
with magnetic contact makes it easier to connect
the V2 charger to the motor or battery, depending
on the installed product. The added level of
convenience can reduce regular wear and tear on
the charging port by making it easier to connect the
charging cable magnetically.
“These new accessories are
designed with convenience in
mind, providing a seamless
magnetic connection every time.
At Somfy, we are continually
innovating to improve the
customer experience, and this is
just the latest addition to our
product mix allowing for an effortless charging
experience for motorized Li-ion window coverings,”
said Brent Holup, Product Manager for WireFree
Products at Somfy North America.
The magnetic charger is compatible with current
V2 RTS motors as well as those powered by
Zigbee as recently announced by Somfy at the
International Window Coverings Expo.
