The semi-annual Bike Swap
and Art on the Square shared
Versailles’ Courthouse Square
with the Farmers Market
on Sept. 9, coordinating
family fun, shopping, and
creative endeavors! Dozens
of collector bikes from
decades ago were displayed.
The event, coordinated by
Steve Buffington and Paula
Johnson of Coolsville
Bicycle Museum, always
causes people to ooh and ahh
when they see the bikes they
used to ride restored to ‘brand
new/straight from under the
Christmas tree’ condition.
Lots of longing looks were
made by those who dreamed
of these specialty bikes when
they were kids. Make plans
for the Spring Swap in 2024!
Bicycles have been part
of Indiana’s history for over
a century. Hoosier bicycle
manufacturers were even
ahead of their time when it
came to electric vehicles!
During the 1890s the
Indiana Bicycle Company
changed its name to Waverly
O
ur
and produced the Electric
Stanhope, a two-person auto
that had a battery with a 40-
mile range and a top speed
of 14 mph. The company
continued producing electric
vehicles for fifteen years
until gas-powered cars took
over the industry. Waverly,
however, certainly had catchy
advertising. They promoted
the clean power of the electric
car by proclaiming, “Delicate
Gowns Not Marred In This
Roomy Electric. Your party
for reception, theater, or ball,
may number five adults, yet no
gown will be marred or even
crushed.” Can Tesla say that?
One of my co-correspondents
for the Beacon, Ollie Roehm,
wrote with pride last month
of his nomination to the
Southeast Indiana Music
Association Hall of Fame.
Another nominee, Tony Holt,
will join his father and uncles
(The Boys from Indiana) in
the Hall of Fame, representing
the best of bluegrass from this
area. Tony’s daughter, Rachel,
has already joined the family
business. If you’re a Holt or a
Holt relative, the music never
stops, even at family reunions
in the backyard! The ceremony
will be held on Saturday,
November 4, 6-10 P.M. in
Batesville. It supports the rich
music heritage in our area.

native flowers and grasses for
the benefit of insects, birds,
and animals. The meadow
across from the Busching
Covered Bridge along the
entrance drive into the park
was planted late last spring.
Several years of cultivation
and ongoing maintenance will
happen under the direction
of park manager, Garrett
McAdams. As Garrett says,
“The work is just another
part of natural resource
management.” What a
beautiful way to greet visitors
to the park!
It’s coming up soon – that
extra hour of sleep we get on
Nov. 5 when we Fall Back for
Daylight Savings Time! For
a few long months, we’ll be
seeing sunshine at breakfast
and flipping on the lights
at suppertime. We won’t
see a sunset after 7 P.M.
in southeast Indiana until
March!

Fall is such a great time of
year. It is my favorite and I’ve
been enjoying every moment.
One need not travel far from
home to take in the beautiful
foliage. Just take a drive on a
country road anywhere in our
locale and the rolling hills,
creek beds, and wildlife will
provide the best kind of show.

Across Ripley County 2022
was very successful in placing
wreaths on the graves of 4,000
Veterans who once called Ripley
County home. The goal this
year is to identify and honor
an additional one thousand
soldiers. If you would like
to check if a certain veteran
is in the extensive database
created last year, contact Owen
Menchhofer with the name as
soon as possible to make sure
they are included. His contact

that it will raise the necessary
funding through grants and

Seniors Ben Riehle and
Margot Keller were crowned
king and queen at halftime of
the varsity football game. The
homecoming court consisted
of Kaitlyn Carpenter, Alyssa

all members of the Class of
2024.
Residents were saddened to
hear that a young member of
our community was injured
in a car accident in early

to REMEMBER those US
veterans who have fallen,

TEACH the value of freedom
to our children by placing
wreaths on their veterans’
graves, it is not too late to
start the planning for this year.

very willing to help them get
started with this project in
their cemeteries.

NOW I know that we only
walked a little over a mile and
probably stopped at eight or
nine houses and it couldn’t
have taken more than an hour
tops! The best treats were
homemade popcorn balls
wrapped in waxed paper and
the occasional full-size candy
bar (which was rare). Getting
an apple or some pennies
thrown in the bag wasn’t
unusual. We didn’t have to
worry about harmful foreign
objects hidden in the candy.
Trick-or-treat night in Milan
is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct.

ghosts and goblins in your
