Page 2A THE BEACON November 2023 By Tamara Taylor A Dream Came True After three, count ‘em, THREE YEARS, of planning, my dream of having an elegant event on a bridge came true. I cannot begin to thank all of the wonderful friends, long-standing and new, who helped make that dream come true. Better yet, the event was a huge success for Judge McLaughlin’s dream that became a reality- JCAP. To those who are now a part of the nonprofit organization, A Community Bridge, thank you from the bottom of my heart. The realization of a dream is so powerful that the description of that person’s dream is best described by someone close to him or her. This month’s volunteer has become a steadfast friend to one of our writers. Who better to share his story? And stay tuned... this dream may lead to some fantastic places in the future... A Teacher at Heart By Cheryl Damon-Greiner Giving tests to identify the personality traits of their employees and managers is a popular practice of businesses. The goal is to see what makes the employees tick so that the business can hire and train a balanced team of leaders and followers. Yin and Yang, if you will, to keep the company moving forward with as little friction as possible. I was interested in reading some of the descriptions these tests assigned to different personality types. I looked at one of the giving, nurturing, personality types called Teacher, and lo and behold, the qualities associated with that personality fit a Versailles friend like a glove. According to the assessment, the Teacher personality is kind, empathetic, and authentic. “A rare person who is highly attuned to other people’s needs and emotions.” Meet Jerry Wilson. Ironically, Jerry actually was a teacher and basketball coach for the fifth and sixth grades during his long career at South Ripley. You don’t spend years developing the minds of preteens without being ‘attuned to their needs and emotions.’ Oh my goodness, imagine dealing with the emotions of 10-12 year olds! The Teacher personality also stands out with a positive attitude. These individuals see the potential in other people and situations. “Their greatest satisfaction often comes from serving and assisting others. They are typically involved in many activities that are centered on values or people’s needs. A retired Teacher type is likely to work as a volunteer.” They could easily call the Teacher type ‘Jerry.’ It’s as if they met him when they wrote the description. He’s certainly positive, involved, and a career volunteer! I met Jerry and his wife, Janice, five or six years ago. I was new to a community committee we were all on and I could quickly see that Jerry didn’t talk much. He is more of a man of action. Ideas and opinions would fly across the table, but when it came time to sign up to do the work, Jerry, and also Jan, were the ones everyone expected to put their names down. And they always did. And still do. They are one of those couples who share a drive to keep busy after retirement by doing things that have a purpose. They obviously enjoy each other’s company but are also comfortable with pursuing their own interests. When Jan talks about how Jerry and Jan Wilson they met, she still smiles at the memory- They were both teachers. She worked in Holton, and Jerry worked in Versailles. They saw each other during in-service training and other meetings. One April day, they shared a lunch table. As she puts it, she apparently caught his eye, and she heard that he was interested, but she was engaged. So their random lunches at school meetings remained friendly. Then in October, her engagement ended. And Jerry, still interested, took her out on their first date on Dec. 6. She remembers because it was St. Nicholas Day. They were married the following October, over forty years ago. She says it was the best decision she ever made. Jerry is very good at seeing possibilities and acting on them. An example of his supportive volunteer activities is helping to maintain areas of Camp Woodsmoke, a Lions Club venture geared for disabled campers. He’s also served on the grant committee of the Ripley County Community Foundation. He’s worked on the Relay for Life to raise funds for cancer research. He worked tirelessly on the Bicentennial celebrations for Indiana and Ripley County to bring history to life – he was selected to be a Torch Bearer in the Bicentennial Torch Relay. While visiting their daughter in New Orleans, Jerry volunteered Jan and himself to walk in a French Quarter Festival parade and work in one of their food booths! He has a special place in his heart for his role in awarding scholarships from the Lions Club. He sets up tables for festivals, carries water to the potted plants around the square, and is treasurer for Main Street Versailles while always working on special events. If there is a need and a possibility that he can make a difference, Jerry will be there smiling, and usually with Jan at his side. (She has her Jerry Wilson was a member of the Torch Relay for the Bicentennial. own list of generous activities including playing guitar and singing at nursing homes and the YMCA Healthy Heart classes.) Jerry’s love of history and his ’just do it’ philosophy found a match with the story of Lewis and Clark, the first American expedition to cross what is now the western portion of the United States, especially since their saga began not too far from here in Clarksville, IN. He served on the Board of Directors of the Lewis and Clark Foundation for years. He started the Adopt a Bison Program at Big Bone Lick State Park after seeing the herd there on a visit to a site that Lewis and Clark had written about. He presents a check from the local chapter of the foundation to the park each year to help with food and vet costs. He received a national award for that. But it is the quieter side of Jerry that I appreciate the most. He just seems to be there to help when you are dropping your bags and keys on the sidewalk, or when there are no more chairs but he somehow finds one for you. His “Hello!” and big smile or an arm wave when his head is down and he’s doing his power walk around the square can brighten my day. Jerry has a loving wife, a house full of books, mostly history, a closet filled with sweatpants, tee-shirts, and gym shoes, and ham salad in the refrigerator for when it’s his turn to fix dinner. He has friends around the town of Versailles and across the country who are glad that he came into their lives to show them how to enjoy life while giving to others. The victory awarded Parris the bronze medal in the weight class at the highest level of freestyle wrestling in the world. The victory also secured the weight class qualification for the USA at the Paris Olympics. Parris will be one of the top American heavyweights vying for this spot. Team USA also won the team title at the world championships. This is the fifth team title for the USA and its first back-to-back titles. American freestyle wrestling is extremely strong at this time, and Parris is among the very best in the world. Mason Parris was also recently honored at “The Big House” at a University of Michigan football game for his NCAA championship and Hodge Trophy award last spring. as well as his recent world bronze medal. Mark was a football, wrestling, and track athlete at East Central and was inducted in the school’s hall of fame class in 2014 as well as enjoying an impressive collegiate football career for Ball State University. Shay was a volleyball, basketball, track, and cheerleading athlete at Lawrenceburg. She was inducted into the 2023 hall of fame class at LHS.
