Page 10B THE BEACON November 2023 VERSAILLES/ RIPLEY CTY By Cheryl Damon- Greiner Community Correspondent versailles@goBEACONnews.com The semi-annual Bike Swap and Art on the Square shared Versailles’ Courthouse Square with the Farmers Market on Sept. 9, coordinating family fun, shopping, and creative endeavors! Dozens of collector bikes from decades ago were displayed. The event, coordinated by Steve Buffington and Paula Johnson of Coolsville Bicycle Museum, always causes people to ooh and ahh when they see the bikes they used to ride restored to ‘brand new/straight from under the Christmas tree’ condition. Lots of longing looks were made by those who dreamed of these specialty bikes when they were kids. Make plans for the Spring Swap in 2024! Bicycles have been part of Indiana’s history for over a century. Hoosier bicycle manufacturers were even ahead of their time when it came to electric vehicles! During the 1890s the Indiana Bicycle Company changed its name to Waverly O ur and produced the Electric Stanhope, a two-person auto that had a battery with a 40- mile range and a top speed of 14 mph. The company continued producing electric vehicles for fifteen years until gas-powered cars took over the industry. Waverly, however, certainly had catchy advertising. They promoted the clean power of the electric car by proclaiming, “Delicate Gowns Not Marred In This Roomy Electric. Your party for reception, theater, or ball, may number five adults, yet no gown will be marred or even crushed.” Can Tesla say that? One of my co-correspondents for the Beacon, Ollie Roehm, wrote with pride last month of his nomination to the Southeast Indiana Music Association Hall of Fame. Another nominee, Tony Holt, will join his father and uncles (The Boys from Indiana) in the Hall of Fame, representing the best of bluegrass from this area. Tony’s daughter, Rachel, has already joined the family business. If you’re a Holt or a Holt relative, the music never stops, even at family reunions in the backyard! The ceremony will be held on Saturday, November 4, 6-10 P.M. in Batesville. It supports the rich music heritage in our area. The meadow across from the Busching Covered Bridge along the entrance drive into the park was planted late last spring. Several years of cultivation and ongoing maintenance will happen under the direction of park manager, Garrett McAdams. As Garrett says, “The work is just another part of natural resource management.” What a beautiful way to greet visitors to the park! It’s coming up soon – that extra hour of sleep we get on Nov. 5 when we Fall Back for Daylight Savings Time! For a few long months, we’ll be seeing sunshine at breakfast and flipping on the lights at suppertime. We won’t see a sunset after 7 P.M. in southeast Indiana until March! Ripley County News: Time is growing short to think about decorating a very important part of our landscape – the cemeteries that hold the tombs of our fallen veterans. One need not travel far from home to take in the beautiful foliage. Just take a drive on a country road anywhere in our locale and the rolling hills, creek beds, and wildlife will provide the best kind of show. Residential & Commercial Across Ripley County 2022 was very successful in placing wreaths on the graves of 4,000 Veterans who once called Ripley County home. The goal this year is to identify and honor an additional one thousand soldiers. If you would like to check if a certain veteran is in the extensive database created last year, contact Owen Menchhofer with the name as soon as possible to make sure they are included. Wreaths Across Ripley County moves into this holiday season with the hope that it will raise the necessary funding through grants and donations. The fund raising The Milan High School Indians celebrated homecoming. Seniors Ben Riehle and Margot Keller were crowned king and queen at halftime of the varsity football game. The homecoming court consisted of Kaitlyn Carpenter, Alyssa Phelps, Magdalene Hudepohl, Ayden Potts, Dylan Thomas, and Liam Horton, all members of the Class of 2024. Residents were saddened to hear that a young member of our community was injured in a car accident in early September. I lived in a very rural area where houses were few and far between. NOW I know that we only walked a little over a mile and probably stopped at eight or nine houses and it couldn’t have taken more than an hour tops! The best treats were homemade popcorn balls wrapped in waxed paper and the occasional full-size candy bar (which was rare). Getting an apple or some pennies thrown in the bag wasn’t unusual. We didn’t have to worry about harmful foreign objects hidden in the candy. Trick-or-treat night in Milan is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 5-7 P.M. Wilson Electrical Services LLC This is a very busy time of the year with my annual trip to Washington, DC with fifty veterans, the presentation of plaques to World War II Veterans and Purple Heart recipients at Lawrenceburg Music Fest, Farmers Fair, and Veterans Day. My four wreath presenters at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were Tim “Hamster” Halloran, Brandon Lorton, Bill Cherry, and Ron Spurlock. They felt the emotion that hits you when you walk on that hallowed ground. I was also accompanied by Rachel Ziegler and her two daughters, Tessa, age 6, and Raya, age 11. They were chosen to go to Washington, DC because they are two of the most outstanding young American Patriots you will ever meet. They have conducted bake sales, yard sales, and many other fund raisers to help pay for Veterans to be able to go to Washington, DC on the tristate Honor Flight. They have raised well over $10,000 for this program. Whenever an Honor Flight goes out, they are at the Greater Cincinnati Airport to wish the veterans a great trip and thank them for their service. They also return late that evening to welcome them home as heroes and experience their stories about their wonderful trip to see the monuments and memorials. Instilling patriotism in our youth of America is important. Thank you, Rachel, Tessa, and Raya for being True American Patriots. Only three World War II Veterans remain in Ohio County- Leroy Guard, Bob Browning, and Bill Elder. Recently, Leroy Guard celebrated his ninety-ninth birthday and we are anticipating a big celebration for his one-hundredth birthday next year. I also had the honor of visiting two of the eight remaining World War II Veterans in Dearborn County, George Lingg, age 98 at New Alsace, and JC Lewis, age 96 at Mt. Sinai. The other six in Dearborn County are George Shelby (100), George Klopp, Clarence Cook, Tom Cook, Bob Savage, and Lawrence Lyttle. They are members of America’s Greatest Generation. An American Flag measuring 30’x50’ to display at local events has been donated by Brian “Biggin” Noble and band the Renegades. The flag has been displayed three times at high school sports events. That huge flag with the athletes holding the flag for the National Anthem is a beautiful sight. It is available for events to share patriotism and pay tribute to our great nation. Ninth District Congresswoman Erin Houchin graciously had her Chief of Staff, Kyle Kissier, meet us in Washington and present American Flags to my wreath presenters at Arlington National Cemetery. These flags had been flown at the Capitol Building. I was also with Nick Trotta, whose brother, Francis (Frank) Jeffrey Trotta, was killed while serving as a United States Marine. Nick and his wife, Nancy, were accompanied by Jean Ryan. Her fiance, Jerry C. Klute, was killed on 6-15-1969. Over eighty people participated in the first-ever public mass in Rising Sun, Indiana on Sept. 8 at Heritage Hall - a former Presbyterian house of worship. Ohio County is the only county in the Archdiocese in which there is no Catholic church building. It is included in the territory of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Aurora (Dearborn County).
