A Message from Jackie Weston 

Auburn Chamber of Commerce CEO 

Hello, and thank you for 

taking the time to read 

through our directory. 

My name is Jackie Weston, 

and I’m lucky enough to be 

the CEO of the best Chamber 

around: the Auburn Chamber 

of Commerce. 

We truly have an incredible 

Chamber filled with amazing 

members, the most helpful 

volunteers, and people who 

like to have fun while running 

their own businesses. 

I’ve been fortunate to call the 

Auburn area home for most 

of my life. To be able to be in 

the position I am is truly a dream come true. My love for the Auburn 

area runs deep, and I can’t imagine another career being as great a fit 

for my personality. My parents owned a small business in Auburn for 

nearly 40 years, and I spent over a decade with them in the business. 

I know the challenges small businesses face, and I know the passion

Chamber are incredible and can be lifelong. I have often been called 

Auburn’s “Biggest Cheerleader” or Auburn’s “Can-Do Gal,” and I love 

every moment of it. Whether we’re putting on amazing events, writing 

letters to government to support our local businesses, or interviewing 

candidates for elected positions, it’s all helpful to our entire 

business community. 

There is so much more to the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, 

more than I can even begin to fit into this introduction, so feel free to

A Message from Jeffrey Tooker 

Placer Union High School District Superintendent 

The Placer Union High School 

District (PUHSD) is a community-based 

high school district 

home to innovative educators, supportive 

communities, and more than 

4,000 multi-talented students. The 

PUHSD Board of Trustees has a long 

history of maintaining a balanced 

budget, providing new and updated 

technology and facilities, supporting 

the arts and athletics, and ensuring 

our students are prepared for life after 

high school. 

The district serves high school 

students enrolled throughout the 

communities of Auburn, Colfax, 

Foresthill, and Loomis and is 

comprised of four comprehensive 

high schools—one of which offers 

the competitive International 

Baccalaureate (IB) program—two 

continuation high schools, an 

extensive adult education program 

that serves nearly 10,000 adults, 

as well as an online charter school, 

Maidu Virtual Charter Academy 

(MVCA). 

Students are afforded vast 

opportunities of dual-enrollment 

classes through our comprehensive 

sites and MVCA. Participating in 

these classes enables students to 

earn transferable credits for UC’s 

and CSU’s, which is a benefit by 

saving money and time toward their 

college education. Students at the 

district’s continuation high schools 

can participate in work-based 

programs and internships with 

community businesses, enabling 

them to learn career trades and gain 

experience. MVCA provides a nontraditional 

educational experience 

for students needing flexibility and

The PUHSD Board of Trustees

campuses to have assigned school 

resource officers. The Board’s vision 

of having surveillance cameras on 

the campuses is a priority, and we 

are anticipating the installation of 

state-of-the-art security cameras. 

Placer High School, established in 

1897, is the district’s oldest campus 

and will welcome its first female 

principal, Jaime Jackson, this year. 

The district is fortunate to have 

great community support, which has 

enabled them to provide new and 

renovated learning environments 

for students. Known for their 

innovative use of technology and 

instruction, staff throughout the 

district prioritize safety, high 

achievement, and unwavering 

commitment to students. 

With a unique and distinctive 

culture surrounding each school, 

we appreciate the support of all of 

our communities and are so proud

District 5 Supervisor 

In the heart of California’s 

scenic Gold Country lies Placer 

County, a region brimming with 

success and prosperity. With a 

thriving economy and a close-knit 

community, Placer County has 

become a coveted destination for 

both residents and visitors alike. 

The county’s success is reflected 

in its employment statistics. Placer 

County has attracted a wide array

business-friendly policies. The 

unemployment rate has significantly 

declined since the pandemic—just 

3.8% as of December 2022—and the 

county boasts an impressive track

A Message from Alice Dowdin-Calvillo 

City of Auburn Mayor 

Welcome to Auburn, the 

Endurance Capital of the 

World! Auburn claimed 

this title in 2003, given the vast 

number and range of endurance 

competitions that call Auburn home. 

It all started with the Western States 

Endurance Ride in 1955, (aka, the 

Tevis Cup), a 100-mile in one day 

horse race from the Tahoe area 

to Auburn. Today, Auburn is host 

to numerous endurance events, 

including the world-renowned 

Western States Endurance 100-mile 

run, Tevis Cup, and Canyons by 

UTMB, with participants traveling 

here from all over the world. 

With the scenic American River 

Canyon as our backyard, it is easy 

to understand that Auburn has 

something to offer every level of 

outdoor enthusiast. Whether you 

enjoy a leisurely hike with the 

family along the river, rafting rapids, 

or running or horseback riding 

along the Western States Trail, the 

outdoors are yours. 

Let’s not forget cyclists and

plethora of trails and pathways here

Placer School for Adults (PSA) is nestled in Auburn’s 

beautiful Sierra foothills. Our main campus is 

located at the Lynn MacDonald Education Center.

been serving adult students for 

the past 60 years with various

The Gold Country Pro Rodeo—produced in partnership with 

Flying U Rodeo, Inc., and EzEvents, Inc.—is held at the 

Gold Country Fairgrounds’ McCann Stadium (209 Fairgate 

Drive) in Auburn. 

Flying U Rodeo is a name that’s 

become synonymous with quality 

rodeo production. Led by Reno 

Rosser, (Cotton Rosser passed 

in 2022), the Rosser family has 

worked to make Flying U one of the 

most successful stock contracting 

firms in professional rodeo. Cotton 

and family have long been known 

for their outstanding rodeo productions, 

including the flamboyant 

opening ceremonies presented 

at the National Finals Rodeo, the 

Houston Livestock Show, and the 

Grand National Rodeo in San Francisco,

All About Endurance Riding

Endurance riding is defined by the American Endurance 

Ride Conference (AERC) as “an athletic event with the 

same horse and rider covering a measured course within 

a specified maximum time.” 

Endurance rides are races that 

vary in distance between 50-100 

miles and are covered in a single 

day. The horse with the fastest time 

is the winner, providing the horse 

meets the “fit to continue” criteria 

as determined by a veterinary 

staff. The horses are monitored by 

veterinarians throughout the ride 

at predetermined check points and 

will be withdrawn from the ride if 

they’re judged to be unsound or 

metabolically unfit. Each ride has 

mandatory rests or “holds” for the 

horses throughout the ride. 

Endurance rides are races 

that vary in distance

Some rides are longer than 100

AERC but are referred to as limited 

distance rides. 

Although endurance rides 

are technically “races,” many (if 

not most) riders participate for 

completion rather than placing. 

To these riders, the satisfaction of 

completing 50 or 100 miles on a 

sound horse is the prize.

is: “To finish is to win.”

The AERC was founded in 1972 

as a national governing body for 

long distance riding. Over the 

years, it has developed a set of 

rules and guidelines designed to 

provide a standardized format 

and strict veterinary controls. At 

the same time, it has sought to 

avoid the rigidity and complexity 

so characteristic of many other 

equine disciplines. 

From its early beginnings in 

Auburn, the AERC has spread roots 

both nationally and internationally. 

The AERC sanctions more than 700 

rides each year throughout North 

America. In 1978, the Federation 

Equestre Internationale (FEI) 

recognized endurance riding as 

an international sport, and since 

that date, the U.S. and Canada 

have regularly swept the team 

and individual medals. In 1993, 

endurance became the fifth 

discipline under the United States 

Equestrian Team (U.S.E.T.). 

In addition to promoting 

the sport of endurance riding, 

the AERC encourages the use, 

protection, and development 

of equestrian trails, especially 

those with historic significance. 

Many special events of four to six 

consecutive days take place over 

historic trails, such as the Pony 

Express Trail, the Outlaw Trail, the 

Chief Joseph Trail, and the Lewis 

and Clark Trail.

Partnering for the Arts

Arts partnerships continue to thrive for the Placer Artists 

Tour. Formed in 2021 to present the long-running 

November open studios tour, now in its 30th year, the 

organization has made partnerships a strategic element of their 

business plan. 

A partnership between the 

Auburn Symphony and Placer Artists 

Tour jointly presents “Symphony 

and Art in the Park,” the first concert 

of Auburn Symphony’s season and 

a much-loved, free, family-friendly 

event that includes an exhibition of 

artists who are participating in this 

year’s Tour, held on two weekends 

in November. The beautiful and 

natural outdoor park setting at 

School Park Preserve is a real treat 

for all ages. This year, a drum circle 

near the Stan Padilla sculpture will 

add a new element of wonder. 

Additionally, the Placer Artists 

Tour facilitated a Call to Artists for 

Auburn Symphony to select cover 

art for each of its season concert 

programs. The symphony selected 

six pieces of original art for the 2023- 

2024 season, and these works will 

also be on display at Symphony & Art 

in the Park. “We continue to honor 

and celebrate brilliant local artists

Auburn Transportation

Since October 2021, Auburn residents have been 

utilizing the city’s new public transportation service, 

Auburn On-Demand, to conveniently reach desired 

destinations at preferred times.

This ride-share service, like 

Uber or Lyft, allows customers 

to download an app and set their 

pick-up and drop-off locations. A 

dispatcher is available on weekdays 

from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. to offer 

additional assistance. 

The service operates using 

electric vehicles, including buses 

for larger groups or passengers with 

ADA needs, as well as passenger 

cars, which now include Tesla Model 

Y’s. This flexibility allows the service 

to operate in areas where traditional 

buses might face challenges, and 

it extends the operational hours 

beyond 6 p.m., which was the 

previous cutoff time for Auburn 

Transit. 

The Auburn On-Demand service 

runs from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays 

through Thursdays, and from 6 a.m. 

to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. To 

use the service, either the drop-off 

or pick-up location must be within 

Auburn city limits. 

The city has collaborated with 

the app company (TransLoc) to 

provide this service, which allows 

passengers to ride to and from 

popular local shopping and medical 

spots along Highway 49, even if 

they’re outside the city boundaries. 

The service operates 

using electric vehicles, 

including buses for larger 

groups or passengers 

with ADA needs, as 

well as passenger cars, 

which now include Tesla 

Model Y’s. 

Ride fares are determined 

based on the customer’s 

classification, such as general, 

senior, disabled, etc. The fares 

range from $3.50 for general 

passengers to $1.75 for seniors or 

those requiring ADA accessibility. 

While most customers use the 

app or a computer to request 

rides, dispatch services are 

available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 

p.m. on weekdays. 

It’s essential to note that the 

conventional Auburn bus route 

is still in operation, with the 

Auburn loop route running from 

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. 

As an addition to Auburn’s 

transit system, a confluencespecific 

bus operates between 

April and October, coinciding 

with the busy recreational 

season for the Auburn State 

Recreation Area. The on-demand 

bus service has been expanded to 

include five locations in Auburn, 

operating from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Auburn Area Recreation and Park District (ARD) is 

preparing for a busy fall and early winter, a great way to 

cap off the year-long celebration of 75 years of service to 

the community. 

A majority of ARD’s favorite events 

happen after September, the first being 

the incredibly popular Ain’t Necessarily 

Dead Festival. This all-day, 

free-to-attend event, celebrating the 

music and inspiration of the Grateful 

Dead, treats attendees to two stages 

of music featuring a wide variety of 

musical styles, from bluegrass to 

funk, and rock to Americana—all with 

a Grateful flavor. 

Regional Park is also the host to 

ARD’s 11th annual Great Auburn 

Obstacle Race, taking place October 

1 at 9 a.m. This 5K course winding 

through the 80 acres at Regional 

Park and Marriott Meadows features 

over 20 obstacles, including walls, 

ladders, a bubble machine, pond 

crossing in a raft, and, of course, the 

mystical mud pit. Don’t wait to register 

for the race, as it will fill up.

from the community, led by Feed the 

Hungry of Auburn. Everyone who 

finds a key, even if it doesn’t open 

the chest, will win something. 

Outside of events, ARD will be 

working on a variety of small and 

large projects throughout the fall, 

highlighted by the building of three 

new pickleball courts at Auburn City 

Hall, near the School Park Preserve. 

ARD is a proud partner with the 

City of Auburn and the Sky View 

Foundation in getting these courts 

built at an unused area situated 

between City Hall and the School 

Park Preserve. The courts should 

be ready for play sometime in 

November.

For over 20 years, Keep Smilin’ Promotions has been the 

leader in providing and facilitating live music in the 

Sierra foothills. Working with a variety of venues and 

organizations, the company’s goal is to provide a wide range 

of musical options at affordable prices. 

From a local band at a brewery 

to large festivals featuring 

internationally touring bands and 

everything in between, live music 

in the foothills is a lot more fun 

thanks to Keep Smilin’. 

Led by Scott Holbrook, the organization’s 

“purveyor of fun,” and 

his son Patrick Holbrook–who has 

a history of supporting live music, 

starting in high school in the 

’70s—the business is truly a family 

endeavor. Scott also is a longtime 

member of the Auburn Area Recreation 

and Park District, where he 

puts on free concerts and festivals, 

such as the Ain’t Necessarily Dead 

In the 2023/2024

the JGB bringing

live music is in what is affectionately 

called “The Foothill Fillmore” 

located in the city’s historic Order of 

the Odd Fellows Lodge. Transforming 

this funky space into a state-ofthe-art 

live music experience with 

the area’s best sound system has 

augmented quite often with amazing 

liquid light/multimedia light shows. 

In the 2023/2024 season, people can 

expect to see a variety of shows, including 

the likes of Melvin Seals and 

the JGB bringing Grateful Dead/Jerry 

Garcia fun, to the Animal Liberation 

Orchestra (ALO) for a funkin’, rockin’ 

experience like no other. 

In addition to the Odd Fellows, 

Keep Smilin’ puts on weekly free 

shows every Friday and Saturday at 

1849 Brewing in Grass Valley and 

works with other organizations, 

such as the Auburn Chamber of 

Commerce, Auburn Old Town 

Business Association, Crooked Lane 

Brewing, and more. In addition 

to presenting music, Keep Smlin’ 

also rents out and provides sound 

equipment—whether it’s for a small 

meeting, large concert, or something 

in between.

State Theatre Calendar Fills with 

Stage, Music Performances

The historic art deco 

Auburn State Theatre 

(AST) has a storied 

timeline as an entertainment 

hot spot for more than 90 

years. 

The theatre opened in 1930 as a 

1,325-seat movie palace and was 

considered one of the most beautiful 

of the T&D Jr. enterprise, whose 

empire included more than 60 

theatres. 

Today, the nonprofit Auburn 

State Theatre (AST) offers an 

intimate setting for concerts, plays, 

community events, and classic 

documentary, and cult films. 

The concessions area includes 

organic popcorn, a full range of 

traditional movie snacks, and local 

beer and wine—all reasonably priced 

and served by wonderful volunteers! 

At time of publication, the 

theatre was undergoing restoration; 

however, by the time you read this, it 

may be up and running.

During the restoration, AST is 

working with community partners to 

offer films and events.

Outdoor Adventures Abound

Hiking & Cycling 101 

Auburn is the perfect staging ground for 

outdoor enthusiasts who love to jump on 

a mountain bike on a moment’s notice 

and be on some of the best trails in the Sierra 

foothills. And many of those same trails are 

perfect for hiking and horseback riding as well. 

The two most iconic areas for biking 

and hiking are the Auburn State 

Recreation Area (ASRA) and Hidden 

Falls Regional Park. Both easy-access 

parks offer spectacular views, creek 

and river access, and well-maintained 

trails that are suitable for biking 

or hiking. 

AUBURN STATE RECREATION 

AREA: The ASRA encompasses 40 

miles of the scenic canyons of the 

North and Middle Forks of the American 

River near their confluence and 

Auburn sits perfectly along the rim. 

It boasts some of the best mountain 

biking in the southern half of Placer 

County, perfect for riding yearround. 

Routes range from easy-intermediate 

to expert, with Confluence 

Trail, Foresthill Divide Trail, and 

Culvert Trail standing out as the 

most popular. Tight turns, technical 

rocky sections, and pristine views 

of the rivers below make these trails 

both tough and rewarding. For a real 

challenge, link up these three trails 

to complete the 26-mile “Tour the 

ASRA” loop. 

Some top hikes include: 

STAGECOACH TRAIL: This moderate 

3.6-mile trek with sweeping 

views of the American River and the 

world-famous Foresthill Bridge features 

744 feet of elevation gain and 

is used by hikers, trail runners, and 

mountain bikers. 

It was initially a 

Gold Rush-era toll 

route that connected 

miners to 

the Foresthill area. 

LAKE CLEM- 

ENTINE TRAIL: 

This mellow path 

offers panoramic 

views of the North 

Fork of the American 

River. It’s an 

ideal hike on a hot 

day, thanks to the 

shade provided by 

the conifers and 

oaks that line the 

trail. You’ll also 

find easy access 

to the river for a 

quick dip via several side trails. 

WESTERN STATES TRAIL: Famous 

for the iconic 100-mile race from 

Olympic Valley (elevation 8,500 feet) 

to Auburn (elevation 2,000 feet) that 

draws world-class ultramarathon 

runners each year, this trail is a 

great place to log many miles. From 

Auburn, the trail crosses the Middle 

Fork of the American River several 

times as it ascends toward Foresthill. 

HIDDEN FALLS REGIONAL 

PARK: Nestled in the foothills 

between Lincoln and Auburn, 

Hidden Falls hosts outstanding

winter, spring, and fall riding. The 

park’s network of smooth, rolling 

single-track attracts mostly beginners, 

though more advanced riders 

will still love pushing their speed 

through the soft curves. Hidden Falls 

Access Trail and Poppy Trail see a 

fair number of hikers, while the rest 

of the park offers more solitude. Enjoy 

riding through shady oak forests 

and grasslands—and don’t forget to 

check out the 30-foot waterfall that 

gives the park its name.
