COULD THE US
GUN BUYING
DIP BE A GOOD
THING?
Iread with interest the latest
report from the NSSF regarding
the National Instant Criminal
Background Check System (NICS)
check for the month of August 2023.
Looking at NICS data is a fairly
reliable way to determine how many
people are buying guns in the US
and therefore the current trend of the
market. NICS were brought in back in
1993 and 32 States participate.
The August 2023 numbers show a
decrease from this time last year, by
just over 13 per cent, which is hardly
surprising given the huge rise in gun
ownership during and Covid and post
Covid times. The crazy high numbers
were never going to continue.
A decrease can be seen as a negative
in some quarters, but given the
unprecedented demand, shortages in
stock, and general panic this huge
upsurge in purchasing has had, I’m
willing to bet some companies out
there will be happy that this slow down
gives them time to plan and focus on
other parts of their business, rather
than a mad dash to provide guns, gun
parts, ammunition to their hordes of
new customers.
The Covid boom has provided a shot
in the arm for countless manufacturers
and numbers are still way higher than
pre Covid – all growth can be seen
as great but steady growth represents
a realistic and achievable long-term
objective.
We have seen many companies
grow too quickly over the years here
at GTW and, unfortunately, this often
concludes with the same ending.
I’d like to think that the two to
three-year boost has given many
companies across the globe that
increased level of income to allow
investment across the company, rather
than just trying to get stock out of the
door. Take a breather, reassess, plan,
and move forward.
About SinterFire
SinterFire is a pioneering company specialising in advanced bullet technology, particularly in the development of frangible
and lead-free projectiles. With a rich history of innovation, SinterFire has redefined safety and performance standards in the
ammunition industry, earning acclaim for its exceptional engineering and dedication to sustainability.
Described by some as a new
“Wolf Hunt”, the European
Commission (EC) is now
inviting local communities,
scientists and all interested
parties to submit up-to-date
data on wolf populations and
their impact complementing
a request already made to
Member States in April 2023.
These developments are in
response to two European
Parliament resolutions calling
for a procedure to amend
the annexes of the Habitats
Directive (under Article
19) for large carnivores.
MEPs - many of them part
of the European Parliament’s
“Biodiversity, Hunting,
Countryside” Intergroup -
worked hard to make these
resolutions a reality.
Based on these updates
on technical and scientific
progress, the EC will consider,
where appropriate, a proposal
to change the protection
status, to update the legal
framework, and to introduce
further flexibility in line with
the Habitats Directive.
Fully implementing Article
19 is something FACE
(European Federation for
Hunting & Conservation) and
other rural groups have long
called for. Another key request
set out in FACE’s recent
#SignForHunting campaign
is for “accurate assessments
of large carnivore populations
based on suitable criteria”.
So, what’s the EC going to do
with all this new scientific
data gathered from local
communities, scientists and
other parties?
From FACE’s perspective,
there are two different roads
the EC could take:
- Recognise the positive
trends that are scientifically
established and move forward
with a procedure to amend the
annexes.
or…
- Business as usual.
Continue to assess the
conservation status of
wolf using inappropriate
biogeographical units (link),
which gives an impression
of a worsening status rather
than one with a continuous
population growth and
expansion. So far, this approach
has led to increased protection
and conflict at national level.
Leaving aside the status
of Europe’s healthy wolf
population, which is clearly
reaching a social carrying
capacity in many parts of
Europe, the core problem
remains a practical and
legal one. Annex IV (strict
protection) is creating a near
impossible situation: EC
guidance is unclear, national
courts are highly precautionary
and the EC remains active in
pursuing legal infringements,
and all this is frustrating rural
communities.
FACE President, Torbjörn
Larsson, commented:
From our perspective, it’s
hard to couple the statement
from Commission President
Von der Leyen: “I urge local
and national authorities to take
action where necessary” with
the same Commission, which
is so willing to take or threaten
legal action when such moves
are taken at national level. To
move forward, there must be
clear recognition that the wolf
is doing well, and Article 19 of
the Habitats Directive must be
implemented”.
NSSF-ADJUSTED NICS BACKGROUND
CHECKS FOR AUGUST 2023
The August 2023 NSSFadjusted
National Instant
Criminal Background Check
System (NICS) figure of
1,117,824 is a decrease of
13.1 percent compared to
the August 2022 figure of
1,286,816. For comparison,
the unadjusted August 2023
FBI NICS figure 2,047,515
reflects a -16.4 per cent
percent decrease from the
unadjusted FBI NICS figure
of 2,450,616 in August 2022.
August 2023 marks the 49th
month in a row that has
exceeded 1 million adjusted
background checks in a single
month.
Please note: Twenty-four
states currently have at least
one qualified alternative
permit, which under the
Brady Act allows the permitholder,
who has undergone a
background check to obtain
the permit, to purchase a
firearm from a licensed dealer
without a separate additional
background check for that
transfer. The number of NICS
checks in these states does not
include these legal transfers
based on qualifying permits
and NSSF does not adjust for
these transfers.
The adjusted NICS data
were derived by subtracting
out NICS purpose code
permit checks and permit
rechecks used by states for
CCW permit application
checks as well as checks on
active CCW permit databases.
Vortex donates $15,000 to RMEF
NSSF started subtracting
permit rechecks in February
2016.
Though not a direct
correlation to firearms sales,
the NSSF-adjusted NICS
data provide an additional
picture of current market
conditions. In addition to
other purposes, NICS is used
to check transactions for sales
or transfers of new or used
firearms.
It should be noted that
these statistics represent
the number of firearm
background checks initiated
through the NICS. They do
not represent the number of
firearms sold or sales dollars.
Based on varying state laws,
local market conditions and
purchase scenarios, a oneto-one
correlation cannot
be made between a firearm
background check and a
firearm sale.
NEWS
WESTERN AUSTRALIA IGNORING THE
NATIONAL FIREARMS AGREEMENT
The Shooting Industry
Foundation of Australia
(SIFA) is concerned over plans
the West Australian Police
Minister is set to abandon
specific sections of the
National Firearms Agreement
(NFA) in rewriting the state’s
gun laws.
Australia’s National Firearms
Agreement has been in
effect for the last 27 years,
with all Australian states
and territories committed to
upholding this agreement. The
success of this agreement has
seen governments across the
political divide, declaring this
agreement and its cornerstone
principle of a nationally
consistent approach to firearms
regulation, as what keeps
Australian’s safe from gun
violence.
Under the NFA, and
currently in place in all
jurisdictions across Australia,
persons with a firearms license
who want to acquire a firearm
must demonstrate a genuine
reason or need to acquire a
firearm. Only if this reason
or need is established can the
Police then issue a permit to
acquire.
Yet, despite this system
working for 27 years, and
without producing a shred of
evidence to the contrary, the
WA police minister is looking
to abandon this nationally
consistent approach, in favour
of introducing a set limit on
the number of guns a license
holder can own, regardless
of whether there is a genuine
reason or need to acquire.
SIFA CEO James Walsh
commented: “Questions need
to be asked as to why WA is
moving away from the NFA
and looking to introduce a
framework of inconsistent laws,
the very thing the NFA sought
to eliminate”.
SIFA has raised concerns of
the unintended consequences
that will occur, across Australia
if WA moves further away
from the terms specified within
the NFA, and what this will
mean for plans for a National
Firearms Registry, given
consistent regulation is key to
the success of this initiative.
“We are concerned that with
WA ignoring the NFA, this
will signal to other jurisdictions
that they too can regulate
away from this agreement,
which will remove any further
attempts at seeking a nationally
consistent approach to firearms
regulation” Mr Walsh said.
The topic of firearms limits
was also examined in 2016
during the WA Law Reform
Commission – Review of The
Firearms Act 1973 (WA)
Project 105.
The final report into this
review found that “The
Commission is satisfied that
there are sufficient safeguards
built into the genuine
reason (including reasonable
justification) and genuine need
tests to prevent the unjustified
stockpiling of firearms and
recommends that there be
no upper limit on firearms
numbers”.
Several West Australian
firearms dealers and their
local trader’s association
have told SIFA that their
farming, hunting and sporting
customers have expressed
concern that given Western
Australia already has the
strictest firearms regulation
in the country, a further
move away from a nationally
consistent approach will only
disenfranchise law abiding
people in Western Australia
further.
“At a time where the rest of
Australia is working together,
seeking national consistency
in firearms regulation to
implement a National
Firearms Register, it is simply
extraordinary that a single
jurisdiction is going against
the grain with a plan that is
deliberately inconsistent with
the rest of the country. What
is it that WA knows that the
rest of the country doesn’t?” Mr
Walsh said.
The Shooting Industry
Foundation of Australia is
calling on West Australian
Premier Roger Cook to step
in and stop this ‘go it alone’
approach we are seeing from
police minister Paul Papalia
and ensure that Western
Australia upholds the terms
of the National Firearms
Agreement and seeks national
consistency during the re-write
Boost for Hungarian hunters
The Hungarian government substantially
amended its hunting regulations,
ushering in a new age for youth and bow
hunting. Effective since 13 June 2023,
these changes underscore a commitment
to nurturing traditional hunting practices
alongside encouraging technological
advancements.
Under the new legal framework, young
individuals (aged 16 and over) are now
eligible to partake in hunting activities
in Hungary, provided they meet the
necessary prerequisites. This includes
passing the standard examination and,
for those interested in bow hunting or
falconry, the completion of additional,
specialised exams.
The new regulations stipulate that
youths can only hunt big game with a
bow. To ensure the best context for safety
and expertise in the field, the young bow
hunter must be accompanied by a hunter
who has held a certified bow hunting
exam for at least five years.
For small game hunting, the
regulations allow the use of shotguns
and 0.22 caliber rifles, but only when
the young hunter is accompanied by an
experienced guide. Furthermore, with
The world’s largest
ammunition production line
firm recently integrated the
VisionLab, 3D measuring
system, manufactured by
General Inspection, LLC,
to streamline validations
and inspection.
A full range of small
calibre ammunition and
ammunition components
coming from the company’s
production lines are
measured with 2-micron
precision. This drastically
reduces inspection time
and simplifies machine
run-offs by eliminating
measurement differences
inherent with manual
gauges.
In seconds, all
dimensions; including
lengths, diameters, radii,
angles, plus GD&T features
are measured, displayed
and available in excel or
CSV files to share digitally.
Part feature tolerances
are assigned with the
appropriate part number
and stored in memory for
quick recall.
VisionLab 3D gauging
system advantages include:
- Complete inspection in
less than 5 seconds
- Up to 360 profile
measurements
- GD&T feature
measurements
- Simplified 3D GUI
- Built-in self-calibration
- No software licensing fee
are now permitted to engage in the art
of falconry, thus expanding the scope of
hunting activities accessible to them.
The Hungarian government anticipates
that these revised regulations will
invigorate participation in hunting,
inspiring a new generation to enjoy
these traditions in a safe, controlled,
and the end user a lot of
time and money. VisionLab
streamlines measurement
validations by eliminating
disputes caused by human
error that exists when
using manual gauges.
With all the data of every
feature available in seconds,
VisionLab cuts production
machine validations from
VisionLab is versatile,
of handling a wide range
of applications. Gi will
Welsh gamebird release decision pushed back by NRW
The British Association for Shooting
and Conservation (BASC) has
welcomed an announcement by
Natural Resources Wales (NRW)
that is has halted plans to licence the
release of gamebirds next season.
This follows a huge response by
the shooting community to a public
consultation that proposed banning
the release of pheasants and redlegged
partridge as early as next year.
The proposals were described as a
ban on shooting in Wales by the
backdoor.
NRW has today said that because
of the volume of responses to the
consultation, it needs at least another
year to consider its advice to the
relevant minister.
BASC urges NRW to release
details of the consultation responses
before that minister decides.
BASC’s ‘Act Now’ campaign
led to a huge response from the
shooting and rural community to
the consultation. The campaign was
supported by BASC’s Fighting Fund.
NRW are currently analysing and
considering what they described as
“some very detailed and technical
submissions” before any decision will
be made. It was initially announced
that licensing would be in place in
time for the 2024/25 season but that
is seen as no longer “achievable” by
NRW.
BASC Wales director Steve
Griffiths, said: “NRW’s decision to
delay its advice for a year is a sensible
and pragmatic approach, but we
still firmly believe that regulation is
unnecessary.
“We urge NRW to release details
of the responses to the consultation
and will continue to fight to make
sure that shooting’s voice is heard.
“The consultation proposals
threatened the future of shooting in
Wales and the size of the response is
indicative of the seriousness which
the shooting and rural community
considered that threat.”
ATF FFL DEFINITION
EXPANSION ISN’T JUST
UNCONSTITUTIONAL
– IT’S UNFEASIBLE
The Biden administration is forcing the federal agency charged with overseeing the strictly
regulated firearm industry to tighten a vice grip on private gun owners, claiming if they
privately sell guns and offer to sell more, they’re “engaged in the business.”
By Larry Keane
This is just the latest salvo
from President Joe Biden,
who declared from the debate
stage in 2019 that the firearm
industry is “the enemy.”
Now, as the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
(ATF) is snuffing out firearm retailers
at a record pace due to an unrelenting
attack of historically high firearm license
revocations under the guise of its “zerotolerance”
policy, the administration has
unilaterally proposed an expansion of the
definition of who is required to obtain
a dealer’s license and therefore run a
National Instant Criminal Background
Check System (NICS) verification to
transfer a firearm. Recall, failing to
obtain a dealer’s license when required
by law is a crime.
This latest gambit does more than
exceed the ATF’s statutory authority.
It’s an unfeasible requirement. There is
no way ATF could keep up with another
328,000 federal firearm licensees.
President Joe Biden continues to
barrel around Congress to generate
unconstitutional laws when Congress
stands against him trampling on
citizens’ rights. That’s after conceding
he’s powerless to do anything without
Congressional action.
Unilaterally Making Law and Criminals
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland
announced the proposed rule that would
redefine who qualifies as “engaged in
the business” and would require a federal
firearms license (FFL) and run a NICS
background check when selling or
transferring a gun, as well as to maintain
all the required records and paperwork.
This is a thinly-veiled attempt to create
a universal background check scheme –
which even the Department of Justice
(DOJ) has admitted would necessitate a
federal firearm registry to work. That’s
forbidden by federal law.
The irony is, Congress clarified the
“engaged in the business” definition in
the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act
(BSCA). Congress made a one-word
change to the “engaged in the business”
definition by removing the word
“livelihood” the courts had effectively
read out of the statute. The law still
defines a firearm dealer as, “a person who
devotes time, attention and labour to
dealing in firearms as a regular course of
trade or business to predominantly earn
ack the administration.
“This language is tailored towards
individuals regularly selling guns to
strangers with the predominant motive
of making money through a side
business, like the person who sold the
Midland shooter his weapon, and it is
drafted in such a way that prosecutors
will need to prove specific intent on
the part of the unlicensed seller,” said
officials at U.S. Sen. John Cornyn’s
(R-Texas) office. “The Biden admin
should expect for this rule to be struck
down because it is unconstitutional.”
Sen. Joni Ernst’s (R-Iowa) staff said
any efforts to move beyond the previous
boundaries for licensing would go
against Congress’s intent.
“President Biden is twisting the law
to fit his liberal gun-grabbing agenda,”
the senator’s staff told media. “His
administration’s latest attack on lawful
gun owners clearly oversteps both
the intent and the text of the law, at
the expense of the average gun seller.
Senator Ernst has repeatedly defended
FFL holders and will continue to stand
up against the Biden administration’s
attack on Second Amendment rights.”
nssf
a profit through the repetitive purchase
and resale of firearms, but such term
shall not include a person who makes
occasional sales, exchanges, or purchases
of firearms for the enhancement of a
personal collection or for a hobby, or
who sells all or part of his personal
collection of firearms.”
There wasn’t a need for the
administration to publish 108 pages to
clarify a definition that was just updated
unless the administration is attempting
to snatch away Second Amendment
rights from Congress and “The People.”
Yet, the Biden administration is
overreaching, claiming they have orders
from Congress when they clearly don’t.
“This proposed rule implements
Congress’s mandate to expand the
definition of who must obtain a license
and conduct a background check before
selling firearms,” AG Garland said.
The proposed rule, subject to public
comment and final approval, would
require any individual selling firearms
online or at gun shows to be licensed
and run background checks before
completing the transaction, according
to Fox News. The Associated Press
reported that ATF estimates the
proposed rule sweeps up as many as
328,000 private citizens.
Congressional Brushback
In a move not unique to this
administration, the Biden
administration’s legal contortions of
the BSCA have gone over like a lead
balloon. The proposal strains under its
own weight and Congress is brushing
Focus on Criminals
The unilateral expansion of the firearm
dealer definition is unconstitutional
and a violation of the Administrative
Procedures Act (APA) that will be
struck down by the courts. It is also a
misallocation of valuable resources and
time that should be devoted to going
after criminals who wilfully break the
law. ATF enforcement efforts shouldn’t
be used to track down a firearm
hobbyist who sells an occasional firearm
or an uncle who gifts a cherished
hunting rifle to his niece. Gunsmithing
and building firearms at home, of
course, have been common hobbyist
activities since before the country was
founded.
Expanding the dealer definition
means ATF would now be charged with
monitoring and requiring registration
of up to 328,000 Americans it now
deems as “firearm dealers” even though
they only make occasional firearm
sales, exchanges or purchases for the
enhancement of a personal collection
or a hobby, or who sells all or part of a
personal firearm collection. Congress
did not change the requirement that
to be a “dealer,” a person must devote
time, attention, and labour to dealing in
firearms as a regular course of trade or
business to predominantly earn a profit
through the repetitive purchase and
resale of firearms.
GREAT GEAR
EMBRACING
SIMPLICITY
The Single Shot Rifle
In this month’s Great Gear, we will delve deeper into the world of single shot rifles, exploring
their rich heritage, their unique characteristics, and why they continue to hold a special place
in the hearts of hunters and firearm enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic.
In the ever-evolving rifle world where
semi-automatics and bolt-actions
dominate the market, there’s a classic
and often underappreciated category
of firearms that embodies the essence of
marksmanship and sportsmanship - single
shot rifles. These elegant and precise
firearms have a long history that date back
to the early days of firearms development
The Heritage of Single Shot Rifles
Single shot rifles have a shared heritage
that intertwines with the early days of
firearms development in Europe and the
United States. These firearms, initially
simple and straightforward in design,
played pivotal roles in shaping the
shooting culture of both continents. In
Europe, single shot rifles have a storied
history, with renowned gunsmiths
crafting exquisite firearms that were
as much works of art as tools of
precision. British, German, and Austrian
gunmakers, in particular, were celebrated
for their craftsmanship, producing rifles
that were prized possessions of nobility
and sportsmen alike. In the United
States, single shot rifles like the Sharps
pinpoint accuracy. Many models also
incorporate set triggers, adjustable to
provide a hair-trigger release for precise
shooting. In terms of aesthetics and
craftsmanship, European single shot
rifles are renowned for their intricate
engravings and high-quality wood
stocks, while American models often
boast a more rugged and utilitarian
appearance. An even more interesting
feature of most single shot rifles is
their inherent safety aspect. Either
these rifles have an exposed hammer
or a manual cocking mechanism. This
implies that even with a live round in
the chamber and the barrel locked in
Modern Single Shot Rifle Models
Manufacturers on both sides of the
Atlantic continue to produce highquality
single shot rifles that blend
tradition with modern innovations.
In Europe, companies like Blaser,
Merkel and Krieghoff offer a diverse
range of single shot rifles with lots of
possibilities for intricate engraving and
customisation. One of the hallmarks
of these old-world single shot rifles
is their fine craftsmanship. European
gunsmiths have a long history of
creating firearms with intricate
engravings, high-quality wood stocks,
and meticulous attention to detail. In
the United States meanwhile, Henry,
Ruger and Thompson/Center among
others provide a variety of single
shot rifles in different calibres, from
SINGLE SHOT RIFLES
and Remington Rolling Block became
iconic symbols of the American frontier.
These rifles were trusted companions
of pioneers, settlers, and sharpshooters,
providing sustenance and protection
during westward expansion.
Distinctive Characteristics
Single shot rifles, whether in Europe
or the United States, share several
distinctive characteristics that set
them apart from other firearms.
These characteristics reflect their
shared commitment to precision and
marksmanship. First of all, single shot
rifles are lightweight and compact,
simply because they lack a bolt as well
as a magazine. From this point of view,
less is more. Next, their triggers are
finely tuned, offering shooters a crisp
place, the rifle is still completely safe
until the hammer is cocked. Not every
bolt-action offers this level of safety.
Single shot rifles do. What’s more,
single shot rifles offer the ultimate in
take-down versatility. Easily broken
down in three pieces: barrel, stock and
fore end, a single shot rifle is quickly
disassembled and stowed away in a
compact case. This makes this rifle type
the ultimate travel companion.
Applications in Today’s Shooting World
Today, single shot rifles continue to play
vital roles in the shooting communities
of both Europe and the United States.
In Europe, where hunting is deeply
rooted in tradition, single shot rifles are
favored for stalking and still hunting,
where well-considered, accurate shots
are essential, and time is on the hunter’s
side. Their simplicity and reliability
make them ideal for this purpose, and
they are often the choice of ethical
hunters pursuing game from mountain
game and deer to wild boar and smaller
game such as foxes. In the United
States, single shot rifles maintain a
dedicated following among hunters and
competitive shooters alike. They are
particularly cherished for their precision
in long-range shooting competitions
and varmint hunting, where accuracy is
paramount.
.22LR to larger hunting cartridges.
Interchangeable barrels and modern
materials have improved their durability
and versatility without sacrificing
their heritage. Bergara offers a true
Transatlantic single shot rifle, made in
Spain with European craftsmanship,
yet suited for the most demanding
challenges a wilderness hunt can throw
at it.
To Conclude
In an age where firearms technology
continually pushes boundaries, the
enduring appeal of single shot rifles
remains undeniable. Their simplicity,
precision, and reliability continue to
attract hunters and shooters the world
over. Whether you’re pursuing big
game in the wilderness, competing in
precision shooting matches, or simply
enjoying the timeless pleasure of firing
a single, well-placed shot, single shot
rifles offer a unique and rewarding
experience that harkens back to a
bygone era while remaining relevant in
the modern world of firearms. Steeped
in centuries of firearms heritage and a
commitment to precision, these rifles
stand as a testament to the enduring
appeal of craftsmanship and accuracy.
Their blend of tradition and modern
innovation continues to captivate
shooters, reminding us that even in
a rapidly evolving world of firearms
technology, the elegance and precision
of single shot rifles hold a special place
in the industry’s heart. GTW
Rifle market insights
Rifles, alongside shotguns and handguns, constitute a substantial portion of global firearm sales.
This feature examines the evolving landscape of rifle sales, identifying emerging niches and
opportunities for growth within the firearms industry.
DIVERSE APPLICATIONS
Rifles play pivotal roles in both hunting
and target shooting. In addition to
traditional hunting rifles, manufacturers
now produce advanced models tailored
to target and practical shooting, tactical
operations, and military use. Centrefire
rifles are employed for game hunting,
from deer to wild boars and large African
game. Meanwhile, rimfire rifles, often
underestimated, find utility in plinking,
target shooting, pest control, and small
game hunting.
FROM THE WOODS TO THE RANGE
In the realm of hunting, centrefire rifles
take centre stage, addressing a spectrum
of game sizes, from rabbits, deer, and
wild boars to the grandeur of African
game. The global proliferation of game
species, exemplified by the explosive
growth of wild boars in various regions,
is driving these species into uncharted
territories. Several areas are grappling
with a significant influx of these species,
necessitating measures for population
control. This surge in game populations
presents an entirely new market landscape
for the firearms industry. Many of these
new customers are first-time rifle buyers,
drawn into the fold by the presence of
these game species in their locales. Optics
and ammunition sales have also ridden
this wave, benefiting from increased
demand.
ONE FOR EVERYTHING
While gun enthusiasts in countries
like the United States often favour
owning dedicated rifles for each specific
hunting or shooting pursuit, Europe is
charting a different course. This shift in
preference has propelled modular rifles
into the limelight, offering the flexibility
to seamlessly swap barrels, calibres,
and stocks, tailoring the rifle for every
conceivable occasion. In countries such
as the Netherlands, where hunters are
constrained in the number of firearms
they can possess, the modular rifle
concept is a welcome boon.
Furthermore, the modular approach
allows riflemen to intimately acquaint
behind the popularity of modular rifles
is the inclination of many novice hunters
to invest a bit more in a premium, allencompassing
EMERGING RIFLE TRENDS
Recent years have witnessed the
emergence of several notable trends
in the rifle market, reflecting evolving
consumer preferences and technological
advancements. Shooters increasingly
seek rifles that offer modularity and
customisation options. Manufacturers
are designing rifles with interchangeable
components, allowing shooters to tailor
SPOTLIGHT ON… RIFLES
The popularity of long-range shooting
sports and competitions has led to a
demand for precision rifles capable of
consistently hitting targets at extended
distances. Rifle manufacturers are
producing specialised long-range
rifles equipped with heavy barrels,
adjustable stocks, and enhanced optics
compatibility to meet this growing need.
Environmental consciousness is also
influencing the rifle industry.
Manufacturers are exploring
sustainable materials and manufacturing
processes to reduce the environmental
footprint of firearms production.
This trend aligns with the broader
sustainability movement, appealing to
environmentally conscious consumers.
Rifles are also becoming more
digitally integrated. Smart scopes and
accessories that offer features like
ballistic calculators, rangefinders, and
Bluetooth connectivity are gaining
traction. These technologies enhance
accuracy and ease of use for shooters,
especially those engaged in precision
shooting or hunting. Adding to this,
innovations in recoil reduction systems
are becoming more prevalent, especially
in magnum calibre rifles. These systems
mitigate recoil, making rifles more userfriendly,
especially for newer shooters or
those sensitive to recoil. Reduced recoil
enhances shooting comfort and accuracy.
Compact and lightweight rifles
designed for mobility and ease of carry
are in demand too. These rifles are
suitable for backpack hunting, tactical
applications, and situations where
manoeuvrability is essential.
Manufacturers are responding with
innovative designs that prioritise
portability without sacrificing
performance.
THRIVING RIFLE SALES
A global survey of retailers reveals that
rifle sales remain robust, with 20 per
cent of respondents reporting sales of
over 300 rifles per year. The majority of
retailers, more than half, primarily sell
up to 100 rifles annually, aligning with
previous year’s surveys.
TOP SELLERS
Bolt-action rifles maintain their position
as the most popular rifle type, followed
by semi-automatic rifles, with lever
action and pump action rifles taking the
third spot. This shows that although the
market for AR-type rifles is booming, it
still cannot compete with the popularity
of bolt action rifles. Price remains the
primary selling point for rifles, followed
closely by considerations of accuracy and
brand/make.
CENTREFIRE DOMINANCE
While rimfire rifles continue to be
important, with over 60% of retailers
reporting increased sales, centrefire rifles
remain the top choice for the majority
of gun dealers. Over 40% of respondents
noted increased sales in the centrefire
rifle market compared to the previous
year. While the rimfire market occupies
a smaller niche compared to centrefire
rifles, it remains a formidable force that
should not be underestimated. Whether
for casual backyard plinking, precision
target shooting, or pest control, the
unassuming rimfire holds its own as a
noteworthy product category.
A BRIGHT OUTLOOK
The rifle industry offers an array of
business opportunities, driving substantial
spending in gun shops worldwide,
whether for hunting or sports shooting.
Rifles also open doors to accessories,
cleaning kits, optics, and ammunition,
fostering repeat business. Moreover,
manufacturers are crafting highly
sophisticated rifle models tailored for
target shooting, practical applications, law
enforcement, and military use.
Keeping abreast of the latest trends and
innovations ensures that manufacturers,
distributors, and retailers continue to reap
the benefits of this thriving market.
IWA ready
for big SHOT
presence
IWA has announced that the future of the German Pavilion at SHOT Show in Las Vegas,
USA is secure despite a withdrawal of German Ministry funds. For 2024 the area has been
rebranded as the “IWA Pavilion”, attracting interest from across Europe.
After the German
Federal Ministry
of Economics
and Climate
Protection
withdrew from sponsoring
the joint stand,
NürnbergMesse GmbH will
take over sole organisation
of the “IWA Pavilion” for the
coming year.
“As IWA OutdoorClassics,
we stand behind our market
and behind our exhibitors,”
says Rebecca Renn,
Exhibition Director of IWA
OutdoorClassics. “We are
excited to continue to provide
such an opportunity for our
customers and to showcase
the IWA OutdoorClassics
brand so strongly at SHOT
Show,”
The “Young Innovators”
joint booth at IWA
OutdoorClassics 2024 is also
affected by changes.
Independent funding
NürnbergMesse GmbH has
organised the subsidised joint
stand for German companies
at the international trade
fair “SHOT Show” in Las
Vegas on behalf of the
German Federal Ministry
of Economics and Climate
Protection for many
years. In the coming year,
NürnbergMesse GmbH will
continue to organise and sell
the space independently and
without government funding.
The reason for this is
strategic decisions of the
German Federal Ministry
in the foreign trade fair
program, which rule out
further funding of the joint
stand at SHOT Show for the
year 2024.
Rebecca Renn commented:
“First of all, we would like
to thank both the Federal
Ministry and all other
partners and patrons for
the many years of successful
cooperation. As an exhibition
company, our customers and
their needs always come first.
“At IWA OutdoorClassics,
we stand behind our market
and behind our customers
and we’re particularly pleased
44 www.guntradeworld.com
iwa outdoorclassics
to be able to continue to
offer exhibitors such an
opportunity and to be seen
as a bonded partner in the
industry. Continuing as the
IWA Pavilion is also a signal
of the good relationship
between the trade shows.”
Exhibitors are pleased with
the commitment of IWA
OutdoorClassics
Exhibitors are now able to
register their participation
in the IWA Pavilion at
SHOT Show 2024. Among
those who have registered
are exhibitors from previous
years – including Schmidt &
Bender GmbH & Co. KG – as
well as new companies, which
can benefit from what IWA
OutdoorClassics has to offer.
“The IWA Pavilion at SHOT
Show is a great project and
has several advantages for us,”
explains Moritz Rainer, COO
of FBT Fine Ballistic Tools
GmbH. “We are very pleased
that IWA OutdoorClassics
offers us such an opportunity
to participate in international
industry events like SHOT
Show in Las Vegas, absolutely
living up to its role as a driver
of our business sector.”
The company is also the
first non-German company
to exhibit at the IWA
Pavilion, which is opening
up internationally under its
new name. The registration
deadline for exhibitors
is already in September.
Interested exhibitors
should contact the IWA
OutdoorClassics organisation
team directly. All contact
information can be found at:
Young Innovators” joint
stand also affected by decision
The “Young Innovators”
joint stand is also affected by
the current changes on the
part of the Federal Ministry.
There will be no governmentfunded
joint booth for
German start-ups at IWA
OutdoorClassics 2024. “We
very much regret the decision
regarding the funding of a
German joint booth at IWA
OutdoorClassics 2024,” Renn
explains. “However, with the
expansion of the Newcomer
Area, we are also creating
a powerful alternative here
under our own power and
are thus strengthening the
back of young innovative
companies at IWA
OutdoorClassics 2024.”
About IWA OutdoorClassics
D O I N G B U S I N E S S w I T H . . .
A country steeped in European hunting tradition; Spain offers
the discerning businessperson the chance to expand its business.
Here, gun Trade World frameworks the significant characteristics
of the Spanish market, allowing you to better trade in the region.
Hunting is extremely
popular in Spain,
which has over
35m hectares
of hunting land, including
national parks, national
hunting reserves, national
preserves, and numerous
private game reserves.
The best hunting areas
are the Atlantic coast, the
Pyrenees, and parts of
Andalusia, where big game
includes mountain goat (cabra
hispánica), various species of
deer, ibex, roebuck, chamois,
stag, wild boar, wolf and bighorned
mountain sheep.
The hunting season for all
game is strictly defined and
there are large fines for anyone
caught hunting out of season.
The hunting season for small
game runs from mid-October
to early February and includes
grouse, quail, ring dove, turtle
dove, red-legged partridge,
pheasant, duck, geese, bustard,
waterfowl, pigeon, hare, and
rabbit.
There are several kinds of
hunting land, ranging from
free zones where only a
general licence is necessary,
to municipal-owned local
reserves, private reserves,
and national reserves, where
a special licence is required.
To hunt in a national reserve,
you need a hunting permit,
issued by the provincial or
regional office of the Ministry
of the Environment. Special
permission is also required
to hunt in a private reserve.
The best way to hunt in Spain
is to join a local club. When
hunting is prohibited, it’s
usually denoted by a square
sign divided diagonally into
black and white halves.
Hunters need a medical
certificate obtainable from
special clinics, a firearms
permit and third party
insurance. Guns must be
broken and bagged when
transported on public land and
they may not be used within
500m (1,600ft) of a house
or in any urban zone (often
ignored).
Non-resident hunters may
import their own firearms,
although they must obtain an
import certificate from their
local Spanish consulate abroad
(take your current firearms
certificate to the consulate
with a photocopy and your
passport). On arrival in Spain,
the import certificate and gun
must be taken to the local
police station, who will issue a
Spanish gun permit.
Spain has been in the midst of a balanced economic
recovery in recent years; although the COVID-19
crisis led the country into an unprecedented
downturn in economic activity, with the deepest
contraction among EU member states. Nevertheless,
the Spanish economy expanded firmly in 2021 (5.1
per cent) and 2022 (4.3 per cent - IMF), also thanks
to the recovery of tourism activity and the resilience
of the labour market. After decelerating towards
the end of the year, GDP growth is set to remain
subdued at the beginning of 2023. Headwinds are
represented by high energy prices, low confidence
of economic agents and an uncertain geopolitical
context. The implementation of several reforms and
investments under the Recovery and Resilience Plan
are expected to lead to an increased dynamism in
aggregate demand in the second half of the year,
with overall growth projected at 1.2 per cent for
2023, followed by 2.6 per cent in 2024 as per the
IMF forecast (1 per cent and 2 per cent, respectively,
according to the EU Commission).
holidays for hunters are organised
on private estates throughout
Spain (the most popular regions
are Castille-La Mancha,
Andalusia, Extremadura, and
Castille & Leon). For further
Manufacturing powerhouse
Spain is a well-developed sector
and boasts around 650 retailers
and around 20 distributors.
Manufacturing is where Spain
really excels with an estimated 35
manufacturers producing highquality
products to the global
marketplace.
The most significant area of
manufacturing in Spain is the
Basque region in the north where
a lot of hunting is conducted.
Brands such as Bergara, Aguirre
y Aranzabal and Grulla Arms call
this area home, in particular the
city of Eibar. It is also home to
global airgun giants Cometa and
Norica. Gamo, the largest airgun
manufacturer in Europe, calls
Spain home.
Spanish-made guns once had a
reputation of being somewhat of
an inexpensive option, but after
stiff competition at lower price
points from other developing
nations, many shotgun producers
in particular went back to creating
spanish ibex
There is perhaps no animal more
synonymous with the hunting in
Spain than the Ibex. This mountain
goat is defined by its hugely
impressive horns and is a prize
trophy for hunters around the world.
It is well suited to the dry and arid
conditions in Spain and is often
found on high, mountainous ground,
particularly in the north and northeast
of Spain. The two main subspecies
are the Beceite Ibex and the
Gredos Ibex. To hunt these animals,
you will need to have astute
hunting skills, good stamina and a
powerful rifle to be able to find a
good shot of them in their naturally
difficult-to-traverse habitat.
Hunting season: September to May
quality guns at fair prices.
The British-style premium
shotgun is held in great regard
in Spain and many producers
seek to emulate the quality and
prestige of the UK’s brands.
Spain has many
opportunities for international
brands looking to increase
their business. Importing
Spanish brands is very lucrative
thanks to the moderate
prices and good reputation.
Exporting into Spain is also a
healthy option, thanks to its
thriving and stable number
of hunters. Shotguns and
rifles have a big part to play
in Spain with big game and
bird hunting both at very high
levels in the country. Another
strong market here is airguns
and airsoft. While hunting is
not permitted with these types
of guns, their affordability and
the strength of target shooting
in Spain means this is one of
the biggest markets here. You
just need to look at the brands
that were born here – some of
the biggest names in the global
airgun market – to get a full
impression of the strength of
it.
Law Enforcement
There are three main police
forces in Spain, which are
defined by not only the
uniforms they wear but also
their appearance and the roles
they undertake.
Local or Municipal Police -
Policía Local
Recognised by their blue
uniforms, the Local or
Municipal police are a
common sight and are attached
to and recruited by the local
town halls.
In some areas including
Madrid and Valladolid, they
are referred to as Municipal
Police (Policía Municipal),
whereas in Barcelona they
are called ‘Guardia Urbana’.
In the vast majority of cities
and towns, they are called the
Local police or ‘Policía Local’.
You will usually find local
police where the municipality
has a population of more than
5,000 people.
There are currently around
70,000 local police officers
throughout Spain serving the
17 autonomous communities.
National Police -
Policía Nacional
Spain’s national police (Policía
Nacional) is an armed civil
force that deals with more
serious crimes.
Unlike the Local police
which are connected to the
town halls, the national
police are managed by the
Directorate General of
Police and Civil Guard. This
means that they are under
the authority of the State
Department of Security in the
Ministry of the Interior.
In 2020, there were over
87,000 Policía Nacional
officers who operated in all
the capital cities of Spain’s
50 provinces and others as
designated by the national
Government.
They can be identified
by their black uniforms and
are normally stationed in
larger towns and cities with a
population of over 20,000.
The type of crimes they deal
with includes sexual assaults,
muggings, violent crime
and drug offences as well as
organised crime, border control
and terrorism. They maintain
and/or restore public order
and security. This means they
are often used when larger
demonstrations take place.
The national police are also
responsible for the issuance of
national identity documents
such as NIE, TIE, DNI and
passports.
National police officers in
Spain can often be seen at road
checkpoints where they can
sometimes be heavily armed.
Red-legged partridge
Another quarry you could
consider world famous in Spain
is the challenging red-legged
partridge. It’s incredibly quick
flying speeds and how rarely it
takes to the air make it a very
tough to shoot, but rewarding
animal. The bird’s striking beauty
make it well coveted and it also
makes fantastic eating, with
many recipes in northern and
eastern Spain inspired by it.
Driven hunting is common for
this species and you may often
find dogs in a hunting party, as
is usual with many game bird
shooting. Shotguns are the main
type of gun used to hunt this bird.
Hunting season: October to
February
spain
Chamois
The chamois is another coveted
hunting quarry in Spain and is
perfectly adapted to life on steep
mountain slopes, with soft hooves
and impeccable balance. In summer it
has a light brown coat with black and
white markings, while both male and
female chamois have curved horns.
You will most commonly find chamois
in Spain above the treelines in areas of
shrubs and bushes in the Pyrenees and
other high hills and mountain ranges.
The two main species of chamois you
will find in Spain are the Cantabrian
chamois and the Pyrenean chamois.
Hunting season: September to October
(Cantabrian), April to May (Pyrenean)
The Civil Guard - Guardia Civil
Spain’s Civil Guard or Guardia
Civil is the country’s oldest
law enforcement agency which
comes under the Directorate
General of Police and Civil
Guard and the authority of the
State Department of Security
in the Ministry of the Interior.
Guardia Civil officers
wear a distinctive dark-green
uniform and are responsible
for patrolling Spain’s highways
and rural areas (excluding the
Basque Country, Catalonia
and Navarre) as well as
security and border patrol.
Founded in 1844, the
Guardia Civil is military by
nature, which means that
officers are usually found in
barracks or ‘Casas Cuartel’
rather than in police stations
like Spain’s other law
enforcement agents.
Their remit is far-reaching.
Guardia Civil officers can
be highly trained in many
aspects of law enforcement
including fiscal matters,
cybercrime, explosives,
surveillance, counterterrorism,
mountain search and rescue
and criminology to name just
a few.
There are currently
around 75,000 Guardia
officers serving Spain’s rural
communities with around
10,000 working within the
traffic department monitoring
the country’s highways.
Most law enforcement
officers in Spain are issued a
sidearm to carry while they
are on duty. In some cases
of heightened alert officers
have access to sub-machine
guns and rifles. Some Spanish
law enforcement tasked with
guarding the areas around or
at any government installation
in Madrid will also have access
to the Heckler & Koch MP5
9x19mm sub-machine gun
or the Heckler & Koch G36
5.56x45mm rifle as seen at
Ministry of Defense (Spain)
buildings.
The most common sidearm
in Spanish police service is
the Heckler & Koch USP
9x19mm, generally in the USP
Compact form which is used
by the National Police, Guardia
Civil and many regional and
local police forces including
officers in Madrid. The Walther
P99 is also favored by many
local police and some regional
police with officers in Barcelona
being issued the P99 as the
duty sidearm. Glock handguns
are also used by the regional
police in Navarre, the Policía
Foral and some local police
forces. The Beretta 92 9x19mm
handgun has also seen service
with the Guardia Civil who
currently uses it alongside the
Heckler & Koch USP. The SIG
Sauer P226 handgun is used by
the local police in Bilbao.
Gamo has innovation at its heart,
leading to customers always coming
back to the brand when making new
purchases - this is a huge sign that a
company is doing something right.
“It is our way of thinking that
makes the difference,” said a Gamo
spokesperson. “…we know that there
is always room for improvement.”
The company likes to stay close
to its customers, listen to them and
then meet their needs as quickly
as possible. Seems easy doesn’t
it? There is, however, a lot of work
behind this.
“We are convinced that there is
no better formula to promote our
relationship with our customers
than the confidence that they have
in us, and this has brought us a very
significant, worldwide growth, and
a presence in a huge number of
countries,” the Gamo spokesperson
continued.
Gamo rifles have been produced
in Barcelona, Spain, for more than 60
years and are now sold in more than
90 countries, with offices in the USA,
UK, Spain and Mexico.
The company produces its own
barrels plus rifling, triggers, receiver
tubes, welding, grinding, bluing, and
assembly. Whilst it outsources its
rubber (recoil pads) and glass filled
nylon (stocks) from the suppliers
who provide those materials to SEAT
manufacturing a division of Audi and
VW (Barcelona, Spain plant).
Before launching any new air
rifle in to the market, Gamo tests
them by dry firing each rifle 100,000
times (10 units are shot 10,000 times
each). Once the product is launched
and is being manufactured, two
out of every 1,000 rifles assembled
is tested again with 10,000 dry
re shots. In addition to that, all
of its manufactured air rifles are
checked part-by-part and each
airgun is shot and tested by a robot
to assure power, grouping and
velocity required by the company’s
exhaustive quality control standards.
FEATURE
What are you
looking like
that for?
We’re all aware of the importance of building a strong brand,
so why is it that companies don’t give their visual assets the
consideration they deserve?
by Martin Dupree
It’s interesting that, both from a
consumer or trade perspective, as
consumers we are all looking to
brands for emotional connections
when we’re looking to buy.
Whether we’re seeking to form
relationships with brands or with other
people, we’re prepared to put in the
groundwork, simply because relationships
are important to us. We all love forging
relationships as human beings.
There are those that will swear blind
that they only ever buy based upon
price, but don’t believe them – even the
most hard-nosed procurement officers
will be influenced to some degree by
their understanding of a brand and the
product with the greater brand equity
will always have a greater perceived value
to them.
With this in mind, what I don’t
understand is that, even with brands that
have undergone well-executed brand
development exercises, some companies
seem quite prepared to produce imagery
that looks exactly the same as their
competitors. Large amounts of effort and
expense may have gone into fine-tuning
core values, tone-of-voice, personality
and a proposition relating to a brand
strategy in order to stand out from
the opposition and make its offerings
irresistible, only to create me-too
52 www.guntradeworld.com
We don’t do
interchangable ads.
In most magazines you’ll find the majority of adverts
looking pretty similar to each other. If you were to cut a logo
off one advert and stick it over another, it would look equally
at home. Branding opportunities missed.
We call these interchangeable adverts and the reason for
this issue is quite simple - it’s because the claims that the
adverts are making don’t relate to the claims that the brands
are making if they’re even making any brand claims at all.
imagery. This is a shame because we’re
all attracted to photography and video
and looking for something that we can
identify with, especially if it reflects
the perception that we have formulated
about a brand.
Stranger still, if you compare
companies’ social media feeds such as
Instagram, you will see that it’s not just
a few companies that are guilty of this
behaviour, but the vast majority. If you
were to take any sector in the military
market, then take a screen shot of half
a dozen Instagram feeds – if you were
to swap the logos about, in the majority
of cases nobody would notice! In that
respect, rather than saying ‘look at us,
we’re a bit different, manufacturers are
saying ‘look at us, we’re all the same’.
So much for differentiation in the
marketplace.
✁
If an advert is only describing product features and
benefits, then there is nothing distinctive to grab peoples’
attention and nothing to identify with or relate to.
At Dupree International, we have a unique process that
provides clarity to brand messages that we then amplify
through the correct marketing channels - authentic messages
that resonate with customers, both trade and consumer, that
help form clear and detailed plans that build brands.
+44(0)1780 757666 • dupreeinternational.com
How do we improve upon this?
It’s really quite easy…
Implementing core values
If you’ve conducted a core values exercise
and worked out what those values mean,
then apply them to your imagery. For
every value, there’s a photo opportunity
to project that value. With a little more
thought, your videos can start to play
out the role of delivering your brand
promises. By the way that scenes are lit
and the environments that you use and
possibly filters/background colours, your
visual assets can support these promises
and show that they are real … “Hey,
we’ve promised that this brand stands for
X, Y and now look – you can see that it’s
true!”.
Creating unique assets
If you’ve formed a distinctive brand
identity, put it to good use. Maybe your
logo has been formed using a symbol
which can be adapted into a graphic –
maybe a frame that all your images can
sit within or be used to offer uniqueness
to your visual offerings. It might
otherwise look in some ways, similar
to the next guys, but with that stamp
of ownership, you’re suddenly looking
different and proud to say ‘this one’s
ours’.
Social media feeds, with a little
more brand consideration can become
YOUR social media feeds, embellished
with subliminal brand antiquity that’ll
delight your followers looking for that
little reminder of why they’re attracted
to you in the first place and not your
opposition.
It doesn’t have to be overengineered.
A simplistic look and
feel can be even more effective. Take
Apple for instance, who kept to clean
white backgrounds and minimal type.
You can spot Apple imagery from
a mile away on posters, adverts and
packaging - even if you removed the
logo.
Keep it relevant
Avoid anything that is not relating
directly to your brand claims, or
it won’t relate to your audiences.
Images created for effect without
consideration of your brand
messaging can only lead to
confusion and distrust. Scantily
clad models or other gimmicks
that have been invented in the
hope that you can catch someone’s
attention will inevitably be a
disaster for any brand and can
only work for commodity products
that are simply battling it out in a
price war. Clothing brand, Benneton
have stopped creating provocative,
but controversial images due to a
drop in sales. It now aims to celebrate
“the beauty of everyday moments and
everyday emotions”.
For imagery to work effectively, it
needs to offer a reward to its audience. If
you have an affinity with a brand, then
the images and video that you watch
should leave you feeling a little indebted
– if you get a nice warm feeling after
looking at great things, then you will
remember it and want more. If a person
made you feel better about yourself,
you’d like to repay them with a similar
gesture, but this is not possible with a
brand of course. As such, the only way
to settle the debt is to buy it. That’s how
it works.
LEAPERS
A classic redefined
Leapers’ UTG PRO® brings to the market a classic improvement for the iconic MP5 with
a unique monolithic handguard. The US-based manufacturer known for its line of
Michigan-made handguards, stocks, buffer tubes and more has combined M-LOK® and
optics real estate into one rigid and slim drop-in mount.
Precision CNC machined
from 6061-T6 aluminium
and with an overall
installed weight of only 9.6
ounces, the handguard is
finished in H-146 graphite
black Cerakote® in replace
of a matte black anodize. A
decision made to better match
the painted finish found on
MP5 receivers. The patented
claw mount locking interface
utilises four proprietary
lugs that are inserted from
the sides and through the
upper monolithic portion of
the handguard, where four
vertically installed T10 screws
securely clamp the lugs against
the receiver.
The handguard, which
practically spans the length
of the MP5’s sight radius,
provides an extended 16-slot
Picatinny top rail that begins
just forward of the rear sight
drum and ends just before the
charging handle recess notch.
A cut out in the rail allows
for positive identification of
the serial number. Speaking of
the recess notch, the part of
the handguard that overlaps
the notch is chamfered to
specifically prevent hot
spots or snag points from
happening when manipulating
the charging handle, with or
without gloves.
In addition to the chamfer,
access to the charging handle
remains quick and effortless
and shooters will have no
worry about shredding up
their fingers or knuckles as
the top of the handguard
transitions from Picatinny to
M-LOK® the remainder of
the way to the front sight.
Around the circumference
of the handguard are a
total of 17 full and five half
M-LOK® slots. In addition,
two integral anti-rotational
QD sockets are featured and
are located toward the front
of the handguard at the three
and nine o’clock positions. The
multiple M-LOK® positions
make quick work of installing
lights, lasers, foregrips, and
more onto the receiver of the
MP5. A task that is somewhat
of a conundrum for the
classical MP5 compared to
more modern offerings. The
UTG PRO® MP5 monolithic
handguard is designed for the
9mm receiver MP5 and clones
and is compatible with most,
if not all, collapsible and fixed
stocks.
Nextorch introduces
the Saint Torch 31
Ultra-Bright Searchlight
Nextorch Industries, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of illumination tools and
specialised equipment for law enforcement, first responder, tactical, and outdoor applications,
has revealed the 20,000 lumen Saint Torch 31 Searchlight.
The Saint Torch 31 was
designed specifically for
search-and-rescue use,
but is also ideally suited to any
situation that requires long
runtimes and exceptionally
high-outputs, like game
recovery after dark or late
nights on the water.
Crafted from 6061-T6
aircraft grade aluminium, the
Saint Torch 31 produces an
ultra-bright 20,000 lumen
output thanks to eight
high-output LEDs and its
extra-large battery pack. This
incredible illumination tool
casts its beam up to 2,827
yards. The Saint Torch 31’s
battery pack consists of six
4800 mAh Li-ion cells,
providing up to 81 hours of run
time on low. The battery pack
also works as a high-capacity
power bank that can be used
to recharge electronic devices
up to four times on a single
charge via a standard USB
cable. A convenient LED status
indicator provides battery life
at a glance, and the waterproof/
dustproof covers for the battery
pack and flashlight head can
be combined to create a small
waterproof storage container
for medicine, etc.
Another great feature of the
Saint Torch 31 is the Smart
Output Adjustment. Due to
its exceptionally high output,
it has the potential to generate
considerable heat and reflected
glare. To prevent any potential
safety issues the Saint Torch
31 features a photodetector
and temperature sensor to
automatically regulate the
output when the temperature
rises or if it detects an object
within 6.5 ft. This allows the
Saint Torch 31 to remain at a
safe operating temperature and
reduces the glare from the light
contacting reflective surfaces.
Features:
- 20,000 lumen max output
monetary on function
Gun Trade World sat down with Armasight’s Director of Marketing, Steve Lemenov, to look at
the current thermal market and the company’s exciting new additions.
Thermal has been a growing market for
some time now, do you see this trend
continuing?
The thermal market has been on a pretty
impressive growth path, and we see this
trend continue to grow. With technology
moving forward and more people seeing
the benefits of thermal imaging, the
demand for it is really growing. It’s not
just the military and law enforcement
users who are adopting it, but a growing
number of outdoor enthusiasts and
hunters are embracing it. So, yes, thermal
imaging is getting more and more relevant
across the board.
Which are your key products and what
makes them stand out from the crowd?
At Armasight, our key products are
designed with a focus on user-centric
utility and performance. Our Contractor
Which markets are you looking to
grow into?
We have our eyes set on expanding
into various markets. While our roots
lie in serving Law Enforcement and
Military sectors, we’re equally excited
about growing the commercial space.
With the surge in interest among
outdoor enthusiasts, hunters, and
recreational users, we’re eager to offer
our innovative solutions to a broader
audience.
Which specific product are you
particularly excited about and what
are its key features/why should dealers
want to stock/sell it?
Two standout products that truly
resonate with our brand’s vision are
the Sidekick Thermal Monocular and
the Jockey Thermal Clip-on. These
products encompass our dedication to
user-centric design and cutting-edge
Let’s start with the Sidekick Thermal
Monocular – a product that ignites our
excitement. It’s a lightweight system,
bringing formidable power to handheld
and helmet-mounted applications. What
truly sets the
Sidekick apart
is its unique
ability to fuse
thermal and
night vision
images through
neural fusion.
This distinctive
feature offers
a significant
edge in lowlight
scenarios,
enhancing
situational
awareness.
Dealers would
do well to have
the Sidekick on
their shelves,
as it epitomises
innovation,
versatility,
and a unique
experience for
users. It’s a
testament to our
commitment
to pushing
boundaries and supplying tools that
enhance the user’s capabilities.
Now, turning our attention to the
Jockey Thermal Clip-on, this product
takes versatility to a whole new level.
Designed to seamlessly transform
day optics into powerful thermalcapable
devices, the Jockey’s sleek and
intelligent design makes it a must-have
for enthusiasts and professionals alike.
It’s all about enhancing your existing
gear without compromise. With
exceptional thermal imaging quality,
easy attachment, and compatibility with
a variety of optics, the Jockey hits all
the right points. For dealers, it’s a great
opportunity. The Jockey responds to the
growing demand for flexible thermal
solutions, allowing customers to elevate
their current optics without sacrificing
quality or performance. It’s a win-win
situation that brings value to both
dealers and end-users.
BOLLÉ SAFETY
Altus
Knox
Bollé Safety releases two
fresh hunting models
To coincide with autumn/winter outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing, Bollé Safety,
the French brand dedicated to eye protection, announces the launch of two new sunglasses
models specially designed for outdoor enthusiasts.
Named Altus and Knox,
these sunglasses
combine lightness
and comfort with 100 per
cent UVA and UVB filtering
for optimum protection
against the sun. The tints
and technologies of CSP
polarised or smoked lenses
provide enhanced visibility
for activities on land and at
sea. Certified to European
standard EN166*, they provide
optimum resistance to lowspeed
impacts for all nature
enthusiasts.
Design: Which glasses to
choose?
1. The Altus model offers
an aviator style in black,
recognisable by the frame
that splits over the bridge of
the nose and teardrop-shaped
lenses. An iconic design, these
timeless glasses are as elegant
as they are chic.
2. For a sportier, sleeker look,
opt for the Knox model with
its thick black frame and
rectangular lines.
Altus & Knox: two highperformance,
protective
sunglasses:
Whether you’re a professional
or a hobbyist, hunting and
fishing require the right
equipment to stay safe. That’s
why both models are equipped
with specific features:
Altus
To optimise contrasts and
improve visibility, this model
is available in two lens tints:
Smoked or Silver Flash
fogging and scratches, while
the CSP Silver Flash Polarised
lenses are equipped with
PLATINUM LITE. Altus is
