The South Canterbury Museum in
Timaru is the perfect place to explore
local nature and history. From fossils to
fashions, the Museum has hundreds
of fascinating things from local nature
and history on display. Learn about the
local landscape, wildlife, early Māori
heritage and European arrival. Discover
the region’s rich social history and find
out how Timaru’s seaside setting has
shaped our history.
A temporary exhibition area features a
programme of changing shows with a
wide focus. The current exhibition looks
at the impact of the local branch of
Forest & Bird as the national organisation
marks 100 years of advocating for
nature.
The Museum’s archival research area is
open five afternoons a week for those
wanting to explore further. The Museum
holds rich collections of local records,
publications, images and information
files.
Located on Perth Street, downtown
Timaru, the Museum is open six days
a week from 10am Tuesday to Friday
and from 1pm on the weekends and
selected public holidays. There is no
set admission, koha/donations are
encouraged.
The Museum also runs a range of
school holiday programmes and public
