Creating art is an expression of the
rhythms of the soul and each artist has
a personal journey to the creation and
development of their pieces. Support
mechanisms from like-minded artists
can add inspiration to the creative
process.
Indigo is a creative group of painters,
sculptors, ceramists, and multimedia
artists from various locations in Central
Otago, whose current show is being
curated at the McAtamney Gallery in
Geraldine and runs 1 November to 10
December.
Indigo is an informal collaboration
of eight artists who mount group
exhibitions of their work. It presents a
model of a group of artists with differing
practices working together to curate
their own shows so that a narrative may
develop between the works. Subject
matter ranges from reflections on the
landscape, flora, fauna, environmental
concerns, and local history through
to aesthetic and philosophical
considerations. Their work covers a wide
range of media including ceramics,
painting, drawing, sculpture, and mixed
media. Indigo artists all live in Central
Otago and have known each other for a
number of years. They were looking for
a new way to support each other and
show their work together as a group and
that is how Indigo was born.
Waimate’s Tame Wallabies
While visiting Waimate, you must visit
the town’s famous Tame Wallaby Park
Sanctuary.
Gwen, the “Wallaby Lady” has dedicated
46 years to hand raising and caring
for orphan baby wallabies through to
adulthood, mostly brought to her by
hunters.
This requires much commitment as they
need constant warmth and food.
Gwen loves them all as much today as
she did when she got her first one all
those years ago. As visitors meander
among tame wallabies at their own pace,
hand feeding them special pellets, they
are fascinated by the animal’s gentle
nature, thus allowing you hassle-free time
to feel at one with nature.
The park is located off Highway 82 - 71
The rolling hills make for a scenic setting
against the four stone farm buildings.
Totara Estate:
preserving
New Zealand’s
agricultural legacy
Caption: Traditional farmhouse style
morning tea is always a treat with freshly
made scones on the daily guided tours.
Totara Estate has a special experience
for both large and small groups, a taste
of an extended Totara experience.
In the serene countryside of the South Island Te Waipounamu, a scenic Tohu
Whenua gem awaits those with an inclination for history, nature, and the classic.
Located just eight kilometres south of Ōamaru along State Highway 1, Totara
Estate, is a remarkable testament to Aotearoa New Zealand’s rich agricultural
heritage.
Established in the 1850s, it rapidly became one of the nation’s largest and most
prosperous sheep farms during the late 19th century, giving Totara Estate a special
place in our history.
Its contributions to Aotearoa New Zealand’s frozen meat industry were pivotal
in establishing the country’s reputation as an early innovator and leader in the
global meat export industry. Totara Estate paved the way for a new agriculturebased
economy and society. In the ensuing decades, refrigeration played a
transformative role in the domestic and international economy, establishing meat
and dairy products as prominent export commodities.
At the heart of Totara Estate lays four carefully restored Ōamaru whitestone farm
buildings that include a granary that was used for processing and storing the oats,
wheat and barley that were cultivated on the estate. Stables and slaughterhouses
are mainstays of a historic farm; however, Totara’s are far from typical and stand
as a testament to the ingenuity of the era. Designed to accommodate large-scale
sheep processing with efficiency and precision, these buildings offer a glimpse into
the past where cutting-edge innovation shaped our agricultural future.
Family fun
There is a little something for everyone. With fun-filled activities for families,
including a chance to hand-feed the heritage breed sheep and plenty of open
space for children to run around on vast green lawns, the only thing missing is
a picnic to complete the experience. These meticulously manicured lawns treat
visitors to stunning views of the surrounding countryside, making it the perfect
spot to grab something to eat. Spend some quality time at the café, where you
can savour renowned tea and scones served in the historic cookhouse, or simply
soak in the serene atmosphere. Once a month, the cookhouse is transformed
into Victorian tearooms, with the serving staff in full Victorian attire for an added
experience.
Group tours
For heritage-seeking groups, on offer is the chance to get the extended Totara
experience. Totara Estate has a special experience for larger groups, including
costumed tour guides, billy tea over the fire and freshly made scones. Or indoors
in the original cookshop if the weather is not so good. Group tours require a prebooking.
Brydone Monument Walk
If you are feeling energetic you can take a walk up Sebastopol Hill, which is
crowned with a monument to manager Thomas Brydone, who oversaw the farm’s
transition from wool to meat. The view showcases a spectacle of North Otago
farmland and the distant Kakanui Range. The walk takes approximately 40 minutes
to complete the return trip.
Don’t miss the opportunity to experience Totara Estate, conveniently located
just off State Highway 1 – a must-stop on your next roadie. And if you’re feeling
adventurous you can also pop down the road and explore the wonderous Clarks
Mill while you’re at it. The mill machinery is operative on the last Sunday of each
month. Opening hours for the mill run from October to April.
Moeraki Boulders visit a natural
wonder of the world
Some 60 million years ago, the concretions we
know as the Moeraki Boulders started forming on
the ocean floor. Centuries of coastline erosion have
revealed a spectacular view of these curiously
large rocks which are immerging out of the sea.
One of the most striking aspects of the boulders
is their unusually large size and spherical shape.
They are different dimensions and sizes, from
small, to medium, and up to large in diameter.
Some boulders are elongated and as you look
at them you just wonder; how did they get to this
place and time.
The Maori legend refers to the Moeraki Boulders
as the wreckage from a large Waka (sailing canoe)
and are said to represent the fishing nets and tree
gourds that were washed ashore and then turned
Experience the magic
of the Moeraki Boulders
Café, Bar & Gift Shop
Feast your eyes upon the natural wonders
of the Moeraki Boulders. Nestled on
Koekohe Beach, (located between
Moeraki Village and Hampden),is
the Moeraki Boulders Café,
Bar and Gift shop which was
built to honour the exquisite
natural pieces of art.
The Moeraki Boulders Cafe,
Bar & Gift Shop is open 7
days a week and perched on
top of the hill directly above
the famous landmark.
The Cafe has seating capacity for
120 people inside and 40 outside on the
large deck overlooking the Boulders.
into stone. The larger Moeraki Boulders are as big
as 3 metres in diameter and weigh several tons
whilst the smaller boulders can resemble an over
inflated football.
With so much natural interest on Koekohe Beach,
(located between Moeraki Village and Hampden),
the Moeraki Boulders Café, Bar and Gift shop was
built as a stopover after a pleasant walk through
the regenerating native bush. This is also a place to
enjoy the magical coastal vista.
The Moeraki area is also historically significant and
once boasted a Maori village in addition to the
pretty Kotahitanga Church and a lighthouse which
is still in use since its establishment in 1878.
Moeraki Boulders, a must visit destination.
Large bi-folding doors open onto the
deck, which is popular on warm sunny
days, while the café’s large open fire
provides cosy warmth when it’s
chilly. The facility is designed
to cater for large groups,
individuals or couples
looking to celebrate any
occasion.
While there enjoy a pleasant
walk through regenerating
native bush, then come inside
for a drink or meal and enjoy
ambiance overlooking the magical coastal
vista.
Lake Õhau Lodge –
Twizel
Nestled like a hidden gem in the wide
open Mackenzie country is beautiful
Lake Ōhau. As you turn at the big sign
off State Highway 8 and onto the Lake
Ōhau Road, you are presented with a
panorama of peaks straight ahead and
a dramatic “sense of arrival”. After a 15km
drive through golden tussock lands
winding through farms and gentle hills,
the turquoise-blue lake is a total surprise
- so large - and unspoiled.
Lake Ōhau Lodge is another 10km drive
around the rugged edge of the lake
and when you arrive at the majestic
tree-lined driveway, it’s beautiful and
welcoming.
Checking in at the Lodge reception
area, you enter through the rear of
the building and it is not until you go
through to the restaurant, to the bar, or
to your rooms that the magnificent vista
opens up for you to fully appreciate.
Aoraki Mt Cook and the Glen Mary
glacier dominate the expansive
mountain view and on the opposite
side of the lake the striations, formed
thousands of years ago by the glacier,
are striking. The landscape is intrinsic to
Harvest Hotel at The Gate Hospitality & Tourist
Centre, Cromwell’s only hotel, has a long-established
reputation for iconic Central Otago views from all
of its 47 rooms. And with its natural wood cladding
and steep pitched roofline, not to mention spacious
grounds, Harvest Hotel has plenty of street appeal,
too. Being alongside Cromwell Golf Course and across
the road from the Wooing Tree Vineyard also scores
big ticks with guests.
Now the hotel has something more to offer. Almost all
rooms have recently been refreshed and refurbished
to a high standard. Bathrooms were transformed,
French doors opening onto a deck or patio were
double glazed and climate control added to give
guests control over the degree of cooling or heating
that suits them best.
The refurbishment of Harvest Hotel rooms is one of
the final steps in a multi-million dollar project that
transformed the hotel and its bar and café into The
Gate Hospitality & Tourist Centre.
What was the public bar is now the hunting lodge
themed Five Stags Bar and Restaurant and is proving
hugely popular with locals, guests and passing
travellers, as the Forage Information Centre & Café. In
the gallery linking Five Stags and Forage is another
Fruitful legacy thriving
in Central Otago
In mid-2023, Jackson Orchards unveiled a stateof-the-art
packhouse, solidifying its position
as one of Central Otago’s largest orcharding
operations. They process more than 200 tonnes
of stone and pip fruit each season with
an additional 10-15 tonnes of cherries.
The expansion has doubled their
facility’s size, enabling more
retail space and streamlined
online sales, subscriptions,
and mail orders. The Jackson
family, fourth-generation
growers, began their
orcharding legacy during the
1860s gold rush in Alexandra.
Their current property on the
Luggate-Cromwell highway
produces a diverse range of fruits
(cherries, apricots, peaches, nectarines,
plums, greengages, apples, and pears),
benefitting from the region’s abundant sunshine
hours, resulting in the country’s longest growing
season.
River Rock Estate
River Rock Estate offers a tranquil escape
only a five minute walk from the Cromwell
township. Stay at their luxury vineyard
accommodation and hot pool complex where
you can unwind in the picturesque landscape
right out of a picture book.
The Cellar Door is located in an enchanting
barn and offers wine tastings, sales, and
merchandise.
Despite the demand for their fruits, Jackson
Orchards exclusively sells domestically. Their
fruit stall, tours, and ice-cream kiosk operate
throughout the year, drawing visitors seeking a
unique Central Otago experience.
Jackson Orchards’ orchard tours,
running from 9 am to 4 pm most
days, provide an insightful
look into fruit production. The
tours, lasting approximately
45 minutes, educate visitors
about the importance of bees
in fruit cultivation and the
unique V-shaped trellis system
used in the orchards. During
the summer, guests can enjoy
sample picking directly from the
trees.
Tours can be pre-booked online but walk
ins are catered for too. Their fruit stall & ice
cream kiosk are open from 8am daily. Jackson
Orchards, a destination worth the drive!
The 13-hectar vineyard was first planted in
2004 and produces Pino, Gris, Chardonnaystyle
Pinot Gris, Two Together, Pinot Noir,
Zesty Pinot Noir, Naked Pinot, Rose, and
Sauvignon Blanc wines. It is also home to
Cromwell Heritage Precinct is tucked away on the shores of Lake
Dunstan, at the confluence of the Kawarau and Clutha arms of the
lake. The schist stone cottages and shops are tenanted by a range
of stores including an arts collective, printmaker, goldsmith and a
unique gift outlets, cafes, fresh fruit ice cream shop and a cocktail
bar as well as a bike rental store. The precinct is the official start of
the Lake Dunstan Trail which runs along the true right bank of Lake
Dunstan down to Clyde where it links up with the Central Otago
Rail Trail. Every day cyclists from around New Zealand and the rest
of the world set off on the journey to Clyde, down the picturesque
Cromwell Gorge. For those setting off from Clyde, the precinct is the
welcome end to their journey and many take advantage of the cafes
in the precinct for a welcome rest at the end of their 51km journey.
The holidays lie ahead, stretching across
the calendar late into January. Let’s call it
February. That’s a lot of time. You could
do something special with it, like leave
Christchurch.
Pile into the car, fill the glove
compartment with snacks, and drive
south with the music playing loudly
enough to drown out any backseat
requests for McDonald’s. Dunedin’s
waiting for you, dressed in its summer
best, and it promises not to go through
four different outfits in a single day.
That might be an over commitment, but
it can certainly offer you a visit to Tūhura
Otago Museum, unless you turn up on
Christmas. (That’s on you, though—there
were 364 other days to choose from.)
With Canterbury Museum closed for
redevelopment, we thought you might
need another source of educational
entertainment. We’d love to have you for
the day.
Set aside at least two hours for our
science centre. Building mountains,
unleashing a tornado, and making a
volcano blow are time-consuming
activities. They require finesse. Plus, you
need to factor in the three-storey slide
(five-ride minimum).
There’s the Tropical Forest, too, where
exotic butterflies loop through the warm
air. Go slowly here, or you’ll miss the
forest’s more subtle delights, like the sight
of new life silently freeing itself from a
chrysalis.
If you’re after a visual spectacle, book
a free session in our VR exhibition,
TERMINUS, to explore a labyrinth in a
alien world that shifts before your gaze.
Alternatively, visit the Planetarium and
take a surround-sound tour of the solar
system.
You’ll probably need a power nap by this
point, but there’s more. Come back the
next day and wander our galleries with
a kids’ trail. There are model ships, moa
skeletons, giant fossils, an attic full of
animals, and ancient worlds to investigate.
See you soon.
cruise. You can see huge Northern Royal
Albatrosses on their nests and maybe
soaring past the boat on their three metre
wings. At sea there are different albatross
and other seabirds. If you’re lucky you
World class stately home
Larnach Castle is undoubtedly one of
New Zealand’s finest historic homes and
in 2017 this property was endorsed by
Heritage New Zealand as a ‘Landmark
Property’. Not only is this title a testament
to the wealth of its builder, but to the
current owners who have restored and
revitalised it for the benefit of visitors from
around the world.
William Larnach was a merchant, Baron,
and politician when he built the castle in
1871 for his wife Eliza. The finest materials
were imported to befit the opulent
grandeur he envisaged. The 3000 square
foot ballroom is still used for weddings
and balls and the castle boasts the
only Georgian hanging staircase in the
Southern Hemisphere.
Part of the romance and intrigue of
the Castle today is the tragic history of
its owner. Larnach shot himself after a
scandal involving his wife and the building
was subsequently used as a mental
hospital and later to billet troops.
Larnach Castle is a privately funded
restoration project; years of neglect finally
came to an end when the Barker family
purchased it in 1967. The restoration
continues; this is made possible with the
entrance fees that are paid by the guests
that visit.
Currently the Castle has a ‘Kids go
Free’ offer. During the school holidays
the Castle runs a a quiz that can be
completed with the help of parents –
suitable for all ages.
Accommodation is available at the Castle.
There are three styles; Camp Estate
- positioned 500 metres from the front
gate of the Castle, offering luxurious
decor and total privacy; Larnach Lodge,
in the grounds of the castle and has 12
bedrooms with private facilities , while
Castle Stable Stay is the perfect choice
for budget conscience travellers.
All house guests may dine in the restored
dining room of the only genuine Castle
in New Zealand. Superbly located on the
Otago Peninsula, Larnach Castle captures
the romance and history of the past. Enjoy
the café, a game of Petanque’ allow time
to explore the Gift shop.
