Farewell to Gus 

an immensely successful businessman, his heart 

remained grounded in his humble Hellenic roots. 

Celebrating the Legacy of Beloved Entrepreneur 

and Philanthropist, Gus Andy 

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing 

of a remarkable individual, Gus Andy, husband to 

Fotini Andy, a loving father to four children, and 

the esteemed proprietor of the renowned La Mer 

Beachfront Resort in Cape May, New Jersey. Gus 

Andy's journey, one that spanned continents and 

generations, stands as a testament to the power of 

dedication, resilience, and community spirit. 

Born Costas Antoniades on April 21, 1938, in 

the picturesque village of Velvento, nestled in the 

northern reaches of Greece, Gus was raised amidst 

the lush peach orchards, cobblestone streets, 

and majestic mountain vistas that defined his 

hometown. At the tender age of 13, Gus embarked 

on a life-altering journey, immigrating to Chicago, 

Illinois with his family to escape the tumultuous 

aftermath of the Greek Cold War, led by communist 

forces. 

His journey eventually led him to Cape May, New 

Jersey, where he acquired the La Mer Beachfront 

Resort, a labor of love that he continued to operate 

until his passing at the age of 85. While Gus was

of the communities in Miami, Florida, Cape 

May, New Jersey, and his cherished hometown of 

Velvento, Greece. He was a tireless supporter of 

numerous causes, including The American Hellenic 

Institute, autism research, the Archimedean 

Academy Charter School, Mount Sinai and Cooper 

Hospitals, the University of Florida, Stockton 

College, East Lynne Theater, the Cape May 

Chamber of Commerce, the Mid-Atlantic Center 

of the Arts in Cape May, and his Greek Orthodox 

Christian churches in both New Jersey and Florida. 

His contributions extended all the way to Velvento, 

where an elementary school library now bears his 

name. 

Gus leaves behind his beloved wife, Fotini, and their 

four children: Vasiliki, Vivi, Maria, and Yioryos. 

His legacy will continue to shine through his four 

grandchildren: Dylan, Ava, Yiani, and Arabella. 

Additionally, he is survived by his two devoted 

son-in-laws, Trevor and Sebastian, and a cherished 

daughter-in-law, Karolina. His remarkable 

influence and inspiration will persist through them 

and in the memories of those who knew him. 

As we bid farewell to Gus Andy, we celebrate 

the life of a young boy from Greece who dared 

to dream beyond the orchards and cobblestone 

streets of quaint Velvento. His journey exemplified 

a commitment to knowledge, a profound love for 

family, an unwavering dedication to hard work, 

and the courage to overcome any obstacle in his 

path. The team Gus Andy assembled at La Mer 

Beachfront Resort will deeply miss his leadership, 

guidance, and the warmth of his character.

PUMPKIN PANCAKES HAVE ARRIVED 

Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Harry's Ocean Bar & Grille on the corner of Madison 

and Beach Avenues. It's within the same property as Montreal Beach 

Resort and The Wine Cellar and known for some of the best orange 

crushes on the island. 

The vibe: It was a quiet Wednesday afternoon with a bit of a chill 

in the air, so we sat inside. Although the rooftop and patio were open, 

it was much cozier inside. We were the second table to sit down for 

dinner, but it slowly filled up throughout the night. Nicole was thrilled 

to see her old co-worker and friend Makayla was our server. The two 

worked together for a couple years at Cabanas and it was so nice to 

catch up — and we also had tremendous service. 

The drinks: You can't go to Harry's and not enjoy an orange crush, 

so Nicole enjoyed two! Dan tried two of their signature fall cocktails 

— cinnamon apple sour and crown apple cider — and they were both 

refreshing and perfect for fall. If it were the weekend, we probably 

would've each had a third. 

The food: We started with loaded tater tots with cheese sauce, 

chopped bacon and sour cream. For dinner Dan enjoyed a Cajun buttermilk 

chicken sandwich topped with jalapeño slaw and sriracha aioli 

with a side parmesan truffle fries. Nicole went for a fall menu item — 

the butternut ravioli in a brown butter and sage sauce. It was a nice 

addition for the season, and they have plenty more entrées to check out 

like beef stroganoff and black and blue sirloin. 

The takeaway: Harry's is open Wednesday and Thursday from 

2-9pm, Friday 12-10pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8am. Even as 

the season slows, Harry's has a lot to look forward to, including their 

Monster March on Saturday October 28. Get spooky at their Halloween 

bar crawl starting at 6pm. Enjoy live music, giveaways, food and 

drink specials plus a costume contest. The bar crawl from Harry's will 

hit Exit Zero Filling Station, Taco Caballito, The Rusty Nail, Ugly Mug 

and Ocean 7. Join the fun, and if you're up for it, have that third cocktail.

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Readers sometimes ask how writers 

find subjects. Well, sometimes they 

find you. Take yesterday morning. 

As I was sipping my morning joe, a 

ruckus out the window caught my 

attention. Two mockingbirds posturing atop 

my Subaru. Facing each other less than two 

feet apart, first one bird, then the other would 

make quick vertical leaps and side swish its 

long tail. Eventually one bird retreated to 

the safety of the forsythia bush and the other 

bird headed for the utility lines in front of the 

house, the winner I presume. At least for now. 

This morning mockingbirds were particularly 

vocal, singing up a storm. Since 

most of our summer breeders have been long 

gone, the mockingbird songs were particularly 

apparent. They were settling a territorial 

feud. Mockingbirds defend territories year 

round. This time of year, the crop of young 

are prospecting for territories and resident 

birds are hard pressed to defend their rights. 

Sometimes the squabbles get downright confrontational, 

but singing is a good way of 

heading off a confrontation before it begins. 

Back when Alexander Wilson was studying 

birds in our region (early 1800s), mockingbirds 

were not found this far north. But 

Northern Mockingbird, as it is officially 

known, was part of a 20th-century range 

expansion that saw many “southern” species 

expanding north. These include Tufted 

Titmouse, Carolina Wren, Red-bellied 

Woodpecker and Northern Cardinal. All of 

them can now be found in Maine. My first 

Northern Mockingbird was a pioneering 

bird that established territory in the vacant 

lot across from our North Jersey Home. 

Ultimately I was convinced by the gray mimid’s 

eclectic rambling song which incorporates 

snatches of song from other species. 

Hence the name “mockingbird.” Typically, a 

vocalist will repeat a phrase two to six times, 

then switch to another phrase. Both males 

and females sing and birds may incorporate 

the songs of 200 species in their repertoire. 

The mockingbird that occupies the parking 

lot at the South Cape May Meadows is particularly 

gifted, incorporating “Westminster 

chimes,” doorbell ring into its song. It’s so 

gifted that World Series of Birding teams have 

been fooled into adding Bob-white Quail, and 

Kingfisher into their species totals. 

Since teams raise money by pledges made 

on the birds they tally, it is possible that the 

South Cape May mocker has raised more 

money for conservation than any bird in history.

Vampire movies are standard during 

the Halloween season, and it’s no 

wonder. Clichés fly like so many 

bats. Some of these movies are awful 

— sucking the life right out of you. I 

know… enough puns! Most of these movies 

don’t appeal to me. But there’s been a few that 

have stood out. Let’s take a look. 

People talk about one of the earliest vampire 

movies, Nosferatu (1922), as the most 

influential. It’s a classic. But others celebrated 

in the genre don’t make my list of the top 10. 

Apologies to fans of Twilight (2008), Interview 

with the Vampire (1994), and Blade (1998). 

One of my favorites (if not, the fave) is 

Fright Night (1985). A cool guy moves next 

door to a geeky teenager. The geek has suspicions 

that his new neighbor is a vampire. He 

seeks the help of a host from a late night TV 

show called Fright Night. Oscar-nominated 

Chris Sarandon plays the cool guy — he was 

married to Susan Sarandon, who kept his 

name after the divorce. Roddy McDowel plays 

the TV host and William Ragsdale the geek. 

The Movie Column

I caught the flick not too long ago. Unlike 

the story’s ghoulish eternal hero, this movie 

maybe didn’t stand up so well to time. Still, it 

entertains better than most. 

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) was not as 

well received as its TV series (1997-2003), 

which was fun. There are rumors that Zendaya 

is going to reprise the role, very exciting! 

More recent favorites include Vampires vs. 

the Bronx (2020), about a group of kids fighting 

bloodsuckers driving people from their homes 

to gentrify the Bronx. Outstanding social 

commentary. Another fun one was last year’s 

Day Shift. What is the worst possible time for 

a vampire slayer to work? Of course, it’s going 

to be the day shift. All the undead you’re hunting 

are in their coffins, right? Jamie Foxx plays 

a slayer forced to take the dayshift. Critics 

cringed, but what can I say? It was a fun twist 

on the storyline. 

Renfield is a movie released this past April 

that you can stream now. It stars Nicolas Cage 

as the dark lord chasing down his reluctant, 

runaway apprentice. The action is violent, 

sure, but there’s campy humor as well.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, celebrate the spooky season! 

The Celtic festival of Samhain and the 

Catholic Feast of All Souls have coincided 

since the seventh century, when 

the Pope moved the Feast of the Martyrs 

from May to October. Samhain, pronounced 

“SOW-ween,” one of the ancient calendar’s 

four fire festivals, ushers in the dark half 

of the year. It is traditionally the time when the 

veil between the living and the dead is thinnest. 

Ancient Celts left offerings out for the spirits, 

fairies and monsters from the other side, hoping 

to please them, and disguised their children 

to prevent their souls from being stolen. They 

carved faces into turnips to keep their homes 

safe from Stingy Jack, who was cursed to wander 

the world for eternity after tricking the devil. 

Villagers would light bonfires to protect their 

homes or host silent dinners for their dead relatives. 

During these “Dumb Suppers,” doors and 

windows were left open to invite the dead, and 

cakes were baked to tempt ancestors inside. One 

spokesperson would recount the news of the 

past year, but other participants should be silent, 

ready to hear any guidance — often in the form 

of romantic advice — the ancestors might offer 

for the future. Many hosts served the dinner 

backwards, dessert first, and set the table incorrectly 

to reflect the topsy-turvy time of year. 

Many of these Samhain traditions survive 

in some form in our modern celebration of 

Halloween. Though we carve our jack-o-lanterns 

in pumpkins instead of turnips, we still 

love costumes and treats — and the spooky fun 

doesn’t have to end on October 31. After all, turn 

your jack-o-lantern around and you have a perfect 

harvest decoration. 

We’ll turn back the clocks at 2am on 

November 5, meaning darkness falls earlier on 

those crisp evenings, making it the perfect time 

for spooky walks on the beach with a flashlight. 

If you miss the “Full Moon Climb” of the lighthouse 

on October 28, consider “Stairway to the 

Stars” on November 13. Visit capemaymac.org 

for more. Brew something special from Tea by 

the Sea and snuggle in for story time at home. 

Visit Cape Atlantic Book Company for books 

on local ghosts or pick up an eerie classic. Many 

New Jersey schools have time off the first week 

of November, so plan a visit to the Cape May 

County Park and Zoo. If you can’t make the 

annual “Boo at the Zoo” on Saturday, October 

28, you can still visit the animals, or come for 

“Princess and Pirate Day” on November 11. Visit 

capemaycountynj.gov for details. Or consider 

the “Crazy Cape May Scavenger Hunt,” which 

asks you to explore the town in response to 

requests from a remote host. $18 per person —

market. But something must be done. When 

she is in a room and leaves it, the odor lingers. 

I can see people moving away from her when 

we are in public. I feel bad, but what can I do?

put together a basket filled with soaps, natural 

deodorants and lotions. Sit your friend down, 

hand her the basket and tell her she must take 

action in dealing with this. If she denies it, tell 

her to ask a few mutual friends to confirm.

Warn them ahead of time so they speak 

truthfully and not feel they must spare her 

feelings. Also add shaving cream and a pretty 

pink razor to that basket. You’d be surprised 

how effective a close shave can be.

Ever since our kids were small, we have 

summered in Cape May. As they grew up, we’ve 

continued the tradition. It was a lot cheaper in 

those days to rent a house for the summer, and 

now it’s pretty steep. The problem is that our 

kids are in their 40s, all pretty successful, yet 

none of them offer to pay. Even for groceries. 

We can still afford the luxury but would like a 

little help. We love that they still want to spend 

time with us and don’t want to discourage that, 

but we are getting a little pinched. What is the 

best way to approach this? — Feeling Pinched 

Dear Pinched 

The Answer Lady thinks you should reach 

out to them and ask if they are interested in 

booking a house for a fall getaway weekend. 

There is so much going on for fall — Halloween 

Happenings at MAC, Brews and Boos at Mud 

Hen and the Bird Observatory will keep you 

all busy. Then while enjoying some pizza from 

Lucky Bones, bring up next summer and ask if 

they could help. They probably never gave it a 

thought. The Answer Lady is confident these 

omissions are leftovers from childhood and 

the expectation that Mom and Dad always 

pick up the tab. If they’re reluctant, consider 

downsizing. Rather than all being together at 

once, they stay at increments. Let them decide.
