FAWLTY TOWERS: JOHN CLEESE TO
REBOOT SERIES WITH DAUGHTER
The much-loved comedy series is set to return with the father-daughter pairing taking on a boutique hotel in Torquay
John Cleese is set to reboot his much-loved comedy
series Fawlty Towers.
The actor and writer will team up with daughter Camilla Cleese, with the
pair both set to write and star. The new series will “explore how Cleese’s
over-the-top, cynical and misanthropic Basil Fawlty navigates the modern
world”, according to early information, with the plot focusing on his
relationship with his daughter as they manage a boutique hotel together.
The Cleeses are working with film-maker Rob Reiner and his team at Castle
Rock. John Cleese called a first meeting there “one of the best creative
sessions I can remember”.
Reiner, who is also working on a sequel to This is Spinal Tap, said: “John
Cleese is a comedy legend. Just the idea of working with him makes me laugh.”
The original series ran for two six-episode seasons and is viewed as one
of the most defining TV comedies of all time. In 2019, it was named the
greatest British sitcom ever in a Radio Times poll. It followed the staff at an
English seaside hotel as they found themselves in farcical situations.
The show was remade in the US three times – in 1979 as Chateau Snavely,
in 1983 as Amanda’s, and in 1999 as Payne – but all failed. In 2009, John
Cleese said that there would never be another episode of the show.
“I think everyone would be excited if we did it a new series,” John said.
“The problem is, when you do something that is generally accepted as
being very good, a horrible problem arises, which is: how do you top it?
The expectation of what you will do is so high.”
John said, “the casting started in October in a
small room in Birmingham, after six hours
and lots of laughter we have now got a
great cast new and old”.
‘But who will play
the new Manuel?’
EXPLORE TORQUAY
Why is the sand red in Torquay?
Inland the iconic red soils are caused by the presence of iron oxide, laid
down in the arid desert conditions of the Permian and Triassic periods, 290
to 206 million years ago. A large part of Devon’s landscape and geology
are protected through national or international designations.
What is the oldest building in Torquay?
Torre Abbey is Torquay’s oldest building is Torre Abbey, founded as a
monastery in 1196. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the former
monastic site was reused to build an elegant stately home for the Cary family.
In 1930 the local council purchased the house for a public art gallery
and made the grounds into a country park.
Did Charles Darwin live in Torquay?
Charles Darwin’s seminal work On the Origin of Species, and his theory
of evolution shocked Victorian society. He arrived in Torquay in July 1861
and lived at No 2 Meadfoot House in Hesketh Crescent, having chosen the
town for health reasons.
How old is the Hole in the wall in Torquay?
The oldest pub in Torquay is 483 years old, Torquay’s oldest Pub (circa 1540).
With its cobbled floors and low-beamed ceilings, the Hole in the Wall has been
a regular for smugglers and businesspeople alike.
RICHARD MAKES HISTORY
Richard Andrews from Hereford made history this year when he
became the first person to take part in a triathlon, whilst breathing
through his neck…
My story begins in 2018
having suffered a sore
throat, squeaky voice,
and the most intense
earache for 6 months, I
visited my GP who immediately
referred me
to the ENT department.
Following cameras and a
biopsy, I was diagnosed
with stage 2 throat cancer
in the August and
prescribed 5 radiotherapy
sessions a week for
6 weeks. The worst part
of the whole process was
being fitted for my face
and neck mask which
made me feel extremely
claustrophobic and the
fitting of the stomach
feeding tube, the radiotherapy
process felt
like a breeze for the first
three weeks – what was
all the fuss about? Then
came week 4 – Wow
throat closed up - thank
goodness for the feeding
tube – on November
5th admitted to Cheltenham
hospital as couldn’t
stop being sick and the
pain was ridiculous – a
morphine driver fitting,
and I was off home for
the remaining 2 weeks.
You think after the 6
weeks home and dry –
no chance it got worse
for next 3 weeks – lost
all the skin on my neck
and lived on special
milkshakes through my
feeding tube. Finally
mid-December started
to feel better and began
eating liquidised food,
my weight had dropped
from a rather stout 18
stone to a rather frail 13
stone.
Following radiotherapy,
I began to exercise to
help with the recovery of
body and mind – I began
very slowly walking on a
treadmill and swimming
at a local Health Club,
and rather amusingly
I still had the feeding
tube attached and taped
to my stomach and as I
got in the pool it caused
a few people to get outloads
of room for swimming.
I then had the to
create some goals to help the fitness,
so entered and completed a Duathlon(run-bike-run)
and a 10k race, unfortunately
during the 10k race I began
getting breathless and suffering severe
earache. Following more visits to my
consultant and a biopsy, in the June I
was re-diagnosed and told a total laryngectomy
with a radical neck dissection
was the only option and I underwent
surgery on July 2nd 2019.
I left hospital in early August following
some complications, I then began
to run and cycle again to get fit and
assist with my recovery, three months
after the operation I ran the Cardiff half
marathon. Following this I decided to
increase the challenges and so in February
2020 a 50k ultra marathon followed
across the Ridgeway with 6,000
feet of climbing.
Then came Covid and my running and
cycling increased, I started getting interested
in bigger challenges a 100k
ultra and 2 more duathlons followed,
I then heard about the special snorkel
allowing laryngectomees being able to
swim, this was provided by Clare and
her team at the The Royal Devon Hospital.
I then became interested in completing
a triathlon (swim; cycle; run)
basically you swim 400mtrs in a pool;
cycle 11 miles and run 3 miles I became
the first laryngectomee to complete one
– my mind then changed to a and half
Ironman swimming 1.2 miles in a lake,
cycle 50 miles and run 13 miles.
I have now completed 7 triathlons and
a half Ironman (although didn’t quite
finish due to hypothermia) and continue
to complete ultra marathons, duathlons
and running races.
I firmly believe that the exercise programme
I have followed has assisted
my recovery, and indeed speeded it up
– and has helped my mental health.
Here I am 5 years on at the International
Head & Neck Cancer Conference,
looking forward to meeting everyone
over the next two days with the highlight
being on stage Thursday sharing
ideas with you all. If you see me, please
