There is a hidden museum in the heart of Brandon.
It’s not one that is open to the public, but if you are granted the rare privilege of
walking down the hallway of Thomas E. Collins III’s home, a mere glance to the
left and the right will tell the story of years of sacrifice and service this steadfast
man has contributed to our country.
Each wall is adorned with picture frames outlining photos of Mr. Collins with government officials
such as Senator Bob Dole, President Ronald Reagan, and President George W. Bush. Scattered among
the photos are shadow boxes filled with an array of medals. Finally, certificates and plaques honoring
the Air Force lieutenant colonel for his service during the Vietnam War and beyond are placed in a
timeline, telling a summary of his story. However, to sit across from this American hero and hear him
unpack the treasure chest of memories from his time fighting in the Vietnam War and then as a
prisoner of war, will make a person give pause to the reality of sacrifice that was made for our country.
